  1. I'll go $10.00 as well. I'll sent a check to whoever you specify. patrick
  2. hello all, after tripping across this site looking for speakers, i got bit by the tube bug and decided that not only did i need some cornwall's but that i needed some tubes too. ultimately i got a mcintosh mc2105 amp from a guy selling his cw's but got outbid on the cw's ( a recurring theme, or so it seems) and then got a mcintosh MX 110 preamp/tuner. i know the amp is ss but the other sites said it was a great combo, and said the magic setup was to match them with some cw's. i enjoy alot of different music but prefer 60-70 folk and rock, country western for the last 15 years, some jazz and classical, almost anything but techno and rap. i do not know squat about tube rolling...but from reading posts by guy, allan, craig and some others here, i get the distinct impression that particular tubes can improve the sound and others just leave you sort of so so. may i please have the voice of experience on how i should set this up. currently i have the choice of JBL 4311's, JBL L100's or Snell Acoustics E's to play them thru. for vinyl (on the way from dave in new orleans) i have an old dual TT but need recommendation on cart/stylus (have not used in approx 15 years as my then young daughters "helped" me play it several different times...and i replaced them several different times before packing it away). was gonna get a denon 2900 but the recent)and only one i ever looked at) issue of the absolute sound gave me pause. may wait to see what happens in the sacd, dvd-a wars. please be assured that any guidance will be much appreciated, patrick
  3. ah, yous guyz is just trying to make me feel gooder 'bout this.......and it is working. Seriously, i very much appreciate the advice, perspective and wisdom you have provided. my search continues with my patience intact, i'll keep saving the few bucks mother doesn't know about, and i will be ready to go when fate presents herself. thanks guys, patrick p.s. i am starting another thread asking for advice on tubes for the mcintosh mx110 that i just got.....my first forray into tubes. i got the tube bug after tripping over this site, which then led to the conclusion that i also need the cw's. 2nd childhood thing.....best regards.
  4. Dave, it was not a sniping situation. it suddenly ended early and my bid was cancelled. again i seem to be losing my innocence....but with less fun than it was 40 years ago. i am assuming it was another klipsch affectionado since these were sweet...as garymd pointed out in another post, to which i responded and said i was bidding.... again, i am frustrated but not bitter or sour grapish. sooner or later the right set will show up for me. p.s., very nice efforts with taylor, hope it all works out. patrick
  5. were listed on ebay. appear to have been one owner 75's in connecticut. i was the only bidder.....which seemed strange to me...but just got notified my bid was cancelled as the item was no longer available. I am starting to understand that the old saying..."all's fair in love and war" also applies to acquiring near mint cornwalls. seriously, i do not mean this post to sound like sour grapes.....but guys (and ladies), i already had my groundwork laid out to counter the inevitable flack (why buy something so old, they are just getting rid of it because it is old, new stuff- which must be better- is smaller, etc...you know what i mean) that was going to come from my spouse of 25 years: like the nice ring for Christmas, the anniversary gift a few days later, couple bottles of nice wine for the evening when they would suddenly appear, etc. timing is everything , i guess. you guys are killing me out here on the west coast. anyway, enjoy.....i gotta go bid on the other pair....patrick
  6. I'm bidding on the 75's, although his listing claims they are 83's. I note the old style logo and the first part of the serial number is a single digit.....but the dating sheet that has been posted here always seems to suggest there should be two digits before the alpha.....am i being too anal or too literal in interpreting the date code sheet???? thanks, patrick p.s. i can't read the code re the finish...anyone out there get a better view?
  7. my congrats to all of you for helping guide this young man, especially sheltie dave for all of his efforts and ryan for his most generous offer. feels pretty good to be helpful,as that is what life is all about, eh? patrick
  8. it has been a long time since i laughed so hard.....ya just gotta feel for the guy. patrick
  9. Greg, Ditto fini's comments on the great job and the suggestion you submit it to Fine Woodworking....one of my "must read" mags. In my 2nd childhood now and trying to learn asap on both subjects (stereo and woodworking). Thanks to Tom for the hot link, too. Patrick
  10. Dave, I've sent two emails re titles, but can not get confirmation they went thru...if you have not received them would you email me at patrick@mccarthykroes.com thankyou, patrick
  11. George-Fred, take a look at classic-audio.com, classicaudio.com and audioclassics.com for more on the marantz warm sound from the 70's. Patrick
  12. Dave, your terms are acceptable to me....I'll email a list of ones that i would like if another forum member hasn't spoken for it yet. thanks, patrick
  13. absolutely gorgeous josh! i think it is fair to say there are a lot of us out here quite jealous....but in a good way. enjoy it. merry Christmas to all. patrick
  14. okay, so i buy a mint marantz 2330b (vintage 70's) receiver on ebay, had several emails with seller, answered questions, etc, and all seemed ok.......until i just received the receiver and it has a 2 round prong plug that looks like the plugs over in england, ireland, etc. what are my options? is it an easy fix to put a typical usa plug on it or am i in for bigger problems??? i think i just lost my innocence.....
  15. thanks Guy, so do i lose the tube "benefit" because then everything gets processed thru the ss amp? i assume so.
  16. as i said, i still have a ways to go on the learning curve....and this seems to be another example. Reading different CW posts i saw reviews from 2105 owners and many said you'd need a good tube pre amp like the MX 110 to really make the cornwalls come alive......so, now the dumb question on my part: is the pre amp between the amp and speakers or is it between the wall plug and the amp? previously i've only used a receiver... . obviously i'm uninformed, hopefully i'm not stupid...but let's not put it to a vote . Patrick
  17. I ended up with a pair of 4311's and a mint set of L 100's which I'm matching up with a marantz 2330. I say "secret" only to mean I was in the dark.... until i started reading different forums and getting educated on some of these things, but i am still trying to get caught up on the knowledge curve.
  18. While recently trying to find a pair of JBL's to relive my college days in the early 70's ,I discovered the cornwall secret and now would like to find a pair to keep me happy for the next 40 years. Ideally would like (don't we all) one owner, cared and cherished for, never overdriven, perfect sonic (if that is the correct term) quality. Just got a McIntosh MC 2105 and MX 110 tube pre amp and tuner.......and all the forums seem to say the cornwalls are the perfect match. I am open to all advice and suggestions on this subject, and will sincerely appreciate your collective wisdom and experience ( that was not intended to sound so suck-up ish). also, i get the impression almost all cw's are good, but there seems to a preference for mid 70's but no specific explanation as how those differ from the others. any input? thank you, Patrick
  19. have the cornwalls been sold or are they still available. i am in central calif.
  20. Smilin, if you pass on the zebrawood cornwalls, I would be interested in them, but may need logistical help as I am the west coast. Patrick
