  1. When I asked about sealing my Khorns, you stated that it was bset to use grippers on the bottom of the Khorns when on plywood. I have sealed my Khorns to the wall and built 3/4" plywood bottoms and have not got around to getting the grippers yet. It's my understanding that the grippers should be placed in several places around the bottom. Does that mean the bottom works best completing the Bass horn with air space between the bottom of the horn and plywood floor or does one have to gasket between the two(bottom of tailboard and triangle of bottom to plywood flooor? If so, wouldn't it be just as good to just set the speaker on the plywood as shown in my attached pic? Hmm didn't realize my wall needed painting that badly sheesh. BTW anyone have a couple of extra pie badges they want to sell me? Thx much, hoggy
  2. Or if it's not loud enough your too deaf or not using heritage.... :0) hoggy
  3. You must be close to me. Getting a bit worried the big a-- tree in my backyard is going to come down this time. It's blowing like mad in Kent/Renton. Not really close I guees it's blowing up tons along the whole coast. hoggy
  4. I very rarely use my tone controls. My McIntosh C40 has 5 band eq built in. When they are in the nuetral position it takes them out of the circuit from what I understand. Nice feature if in fact it does work that way. The fact is whether LP or CD some are recorded/mixed/compressed so badly either some tone control or not ever listening to them is what ends up happening. Mostly these bad quality LP/CDs just aren't listened to by me. hoggy
  5. Well I happen to use Conalt Speaker Cable and am quite happy with it. I had been using the original Monster cable but over time it oxidised and needed replaceing. I just took a chance on Cobalt Cables while web browseing. hoggy
  6. Very interesting, thanks. I think Pauls look much better though. hoggy
  7. Thank very much all to your replies. What great pics and info. I have sealed my Khorns but only temporarily until I get all the sealing worked out plus plywood/or MDF on the carpet. Thanks all who have posted. This has answered all my questions and am sure has helped many to accomplish getting the best of their Khorns. Great posts guys, Thx again hoggy
  8. Thanks, Wonder why they didn't just put a double bottom on the Khorn with 1/2' or 1" spacers. That would have also made them easier to carry. A few more pounds wouldn't have mattered. Oh well, just one more project to get these working right. After all this I sure hope Al's crossovers do the trick because I'm favoring the Belles for overall sound. The Belles were sooooo smooooth. Dynamatting the mids in the Belles I didn't care for but I think these Khorns need it. I can get rope caulk at work and will try that. I'm off to my fathers tomorrow so won't be replying/following the forum much over next few days. Again i want to thank all of you for your input. hoggy
  9. Q-Man, I never knew before today that the floor was part of the Bass horn. I was under the misconseption that the walls made up the rest of the woofer. Thanks for letting me know. Maybe by my ignorance this post will help others that don't know these things. How big does the triangular piece of wood have to extend past the front of the speaker? I can make these with no problem just don't want to make them bigger than need be? BTW all the pictures I seen with Khorns on carpet doesn't show them on a board. Thx, hoggy
  10. If you haven't thought of this than build it yourself. If I can do than anyone can. It is quite the experience. It's actually easier than you might think. Just get a big case so it's easier to get your hands in and make sure you use a grounding strap. It was one of the most fun things I have put together. The self gratification you get is way cool too. When my ex-girlfriend and daughter saw all the parts on the table they said I'd never get it going. Fooled them though. It's not like brain surgery and is actually quite fun. hoggy
  11. Hmmm no see any gliders on the Khorns I have. Guess whoever was the original owner removed them. I know what they are so am sure they were removed or never installed. HDBRbuilder should I install something to the bottom when I'm on carpet? I have some speaker spikes I never installed on my Belles but have no clue how I'd get the Khorns in the corner with spikes on so thats a no go. hoggy
  12. Thanks alot guys, I have carpeted floors so I'm stuck there. Will do the mods asap. I now fully understand (I think :0)how to seal them. hoggy
  13. Thanks Q-Man, That's what I needed. hoggy
  14. Thanks Artt, I think I read this before. Was looking for pics to make sure I got everything sealed that needed to be. Seems this will not seal bottom of bin though where it's offet for molding and wireing. How tight of a seal does that need to be. Is it as close to a 100% seal we're trying to achieve here? Again thx, hoggy
  15. Mark, It's the Belle that has the shorter horn. The LaScala has the same K400. The Belle has the K500. Bet you knew this but stated it wrong. Excuse my correcting you. After swapping my Belles for Khorns I think I like the Belles squawker better too. Seems to me I like the feel/sound of drums better with Belles. But have not had the Khorns long enough to make a decision on this. I had also done the Harmony 1uf bypass cap mod on the Belles where as these Khorns I have do not have that mod yet. Should be getting my ALK's very soon now and can't wait to hear them. hoggy
  16. Hi guys/gals, Got done with my trade last night of my Belles for Khorns. Now I need to seal them to the walls. I've read a few desciptions on how to do this but am still unclear exactly where on the Khorns I put/make the seal. Yes I hear tail board but am unsure exactly where on tail board? Any of you fine people have a picture or 2 of this? Thx in advance, hoggy
  17. I don't think you'll have to worry about hurting them. When I was young and dump (even now I get that way) I'd crank my old Tandberg amp (150 wps conservative rating )up to where the clipping lights barely showed and never heard a wimper from them. Things were falling off the shelves all over the place. Of course these were 1976 models. I'm pretty sure the new ones would handle it too but others would have to answer that. Had those Belles until yesterday when I traded them for my present Khorns. Clipping hurts speakers way more than power so that's what you have to be careful of. hoggy
  18. That's cool to know. I have no analyzes. I'm sure after these speakers get this old we all can through the stated specs out the window. I mainly posted all this for everyones information. I'm also thinking that where a speaker has spent it's life effects all of this stuff. As many have mentioned room and placement can make all the differnce. Purhaps I'm just lucky. Mine have been in the same enviornment all these years and still sound great. Still doesn't answer why the newer Belles/LaScalas have susch differnt bass specs. Wonder what ABing say a 76 Belle vs a 2004 Belle would show on an analyzer? Hmmm food for thought. In the end it's all relative. One may sound better to each listener. hoggy
  19. Here's where it states usable bass responce. hoggy
  20. Notice Belles and LaScallas of that year go to quote "Bass range extends solidly to 45 HZ usuable to 40.""The responce shall be within peak-trough limits of 10db from 45 to 17,000 Hz and not more than 5 db farther down at 40 and 18,000." hoggy
  21. 76 Khorn specs attached. hoggy
  22. OTOH X-man you make very valid points about informing people about what to expect. I have great respect for what you are saying. I believe Klipsch has been very fair in their specs. Why the older Belles and LaScalas go down lower than the new one (technically why) is a question I'd like someone to answer. hoggy
  23. "I do agree that below 50 HZ they do not have bass" I disagree when that statement applies to older Belles. Attached is the spec sheet on my 76 Belles. I hear the 49hz test signal loud and clear from the Cardas test record. That's suppose to be a true 49hz so if I'm hearing harmonics only convince my why that would be so. Anyone in the Seatlle area that wants to hear it contact me and we can arrange that. I've also read in this forum about the crossover for Belles/Scalas being at 500 hz and mine crossover same as Khorns at 400hz so let the discussions begin. I have the spec sheets for Khorns/Belles? and LaScalas and except for the bass frequences they are identical. In fact I'll scan and post them too. hoggy
  24. Another good table from days of old is the CJ Walker CJ55. I had one for a long time and with a good arm works great. Only thing is you have to walk very lightly. I've seen them on ebay around $400 with Linns lowest priced arms of the time Linn Basic LVV/LVX. hoggy
