  1. Hello everyone! This is a followup to a question in the technical forum regarding the use of a variac. I went garage saleing this Saturday and after looking for hours asked a lady if she had any old audio gear. She responded that she did and that she's been wanting to get rid of them for some time sinse her husband passed away. When I went in her home, there was a pair of Klipshorns and some great audio gear. Long story short, I'm now the very proud, and extremely pleased owner of a pair of KHORNS!! I got them, the Scott, and some other great gear for a scary low price. She actually was thanking me as my friend and I "hauled" them off. I still keep expecting to wake up. : ) At first I thought I'd keep the Klipshorns and sell my Forte's to make up the money. But I can't bare to do that. I'm keeping both and will sell some of my other gear instead. The sound of the Klipschorns is unbelievable. I've played them with both my HK430 and my Kenwood surround sound receiver and they sound spectactuar with both. The sound is not harsch or shrill in the slightest and the bass is thunderous. With the HK430, the speakers have a warm and lush sound to them and yet can shake the house with bass (all from 30 watts)! The cabinets have some chips and small scratches, but I they don't bother me. From the build codes, I believe these are 1978 models. All hail the greatest speaker I've ever heard. I can't wait to eventually get my Scott 299B rebuilt and connected to my new Klipsch.
  2. Hello everyone! The pictures of my new treasures are in the new thread "slice of Heaven"
  3. THANK YOU Richard! That review validates all my loves of my Forte's. Not that I really needed that, but its always nice. LOL. Great reading. I keep forgetting, but I have a short/sweet review from SR on the Klipschorn and Cornwall. I'll try and scan it tomorrow and post it here for all.
  4. Thanks for the info! I'm pretty much ignorent on tube related gear. William, thats some good info on your posting. Thank you! Craig, your post on AK is much appreciated. I am deffinenly not going to just plug the Scott into my Klipsch and listen away before "restoring" her back new near new. Your post on AK is just what I was hoping for and more. Thank you again. Hopefully tomorow, I'll be able to post some pictures of my 299B, and the once in a lifetime treasure that came with my little Scott.
  5. Hello everyone, I found my first tube amp, and one that I've heard will be a great match for my Klipsch Forte Speakers; a great looking Scott 299B. I've read some about not just pluging in and using old tube amps. I eventually would like to save up and get her tuned up and upgrated by Craig or one of the other great techs on our boards. Until then, I'd like to hook her up to a pair of cheap speakers to see if she works well. I would like to buy and learn to use a Variac so that I can warm the tubes up gradually. Could anyone please give me some advice on purchasing a used unit. Looking for a basic (cheap) unit for old tube amps that is realitively easy to use and decent qualtiy. Here's one on eBay I've thought about...http://cgi.ebay.com/Variac-Var-AC-Output-Transformer-5_W0QQitemZ7548224440QQcategoryZ1504QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Any advice will be apreacated. Pictures of my new Scott and the OMYGOD speakers that came with it in a day or less. Lets just say I'm as exited as a 12 year boy in a girls shower room.
  6. Great reading! Thank you Gil. I find it interesting that in my reading of old 1960s HiFi Stereo review articles and in this article, one reads of figures, theories, and facts; whereas in current Stereophile, Absolute Sound, one reads an endless barrage of adjectives, metaphors, and other such hyperbola when reading about "the lastest" new speakers. make you whonder how far we've come.
  7. Ooops! Just relized someone else posted this already in the "more appropriate" home theather forum.
  8. Very COOL! Thank you Gil for posting that. Some great reading. Saved in my ever growing info files.
  9. Hello everyone, someone on Audiokarma.org posted this and I thought I'd share it with those with bigger wallets or equal dreaming to me. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5751513044&fromMakeTrack=true
  10. The HK 730 probably compares quite nicely to the Marantz 2245-2265 series. I have a 2245, and until recently a 2330. The 2330 was sweet and powerful (wish I had not sold it), the 2245 and my HK 430 have a similar sould with the HK probalby having a little more bass warmth to it. The little HK430 and my Pioneer SX-950 probably are the best match I've listend to on my Fortes.
  11. The Marantz 2235 to the 2330 series seem to have the warmest sound of the Marantz recievers. I had a 2330B that I recently sold and often regret it. (needed the money). AudioKarma.org has a ton of good info on it's forums, and the guys are very helpfull and friendly. Also try Classicaudio.com for Marantz "rough" valuations. Good luck and best wishes, Dave
  12. I saw that a couple of days ago. Local electronic Surplus house selling lots of good stuff lately. I have a pair of Fortes currently, would'nt have room for a Korn (even a short horn).
  13. Hello, I recently had a similar problem with my Fortes. I was getting a crackling sound with certain tracks of a couple CDs. I was pretty bumed, but then started trouble shooting. I checked my speaker connections = good, checked the CD RCA cables = good, switched RCAs on CD to receiver = good. ??? Finnally, played CD in DVD player, and presto!! no more crackle. Tried it with other offending CD tracks, same good results. Put CD back in original CD player and offending noise is back. I've disconnected my CD player for now and have not had time to investigate further. The ol Kenwood carasole has lasted me over 12 years, so I'm not too bumed. Good luck to your problem. Hope its a simple fix like mine. David
  14. Hey TC, I'm a relative newbe regarding all this great vintage stuff (including Klipsch!). What's the site your refering to? I'm filling my hard drive like a rat storing up for nuclear winter. LOL Dave
  15. Hello everyone, I thought some of you might be intrested in this cool site. http://www.hifilit.com Here's a sample of our favorate speaker. Dave
  16. "it probably makes no sense at all. Oh well..." It make sense to me. There's plenty of fish in the... I won't babal any of the typical "feel betters" that ignore the hurts we have at times like this. Just wanted to say, "I hear you friend". David
  17. j-malotky, My wife and I often call (to ourselves)people who have what we wish we had, Basterds! I say it with only friendly envey, when I say....BASTERD!! Nice system!
  18. Wow Rob, I wish I had even half of your wood finishing talent. Great job.
  19. Oh, I almost forgot to say: I couldn't bare to part with them even for $800, unless I absolutely had to.
  20. I like how his Forte's have a 15" "subwoofer" in the back. LOL Jeese, my Goodwill Fortes are going up in price. At least with Shirtless Texan Genius types.
  21. Rob, those are some beutiful looking Heresys! Please post a pic when you get the drivers installed. Dave
  22. WOWW!! Picky, thats the coolest music room I've ever seen! Many of the other rooms are great too. I must say a lot of thought (and Heart) has gone into your hobby. If I had another hand, I'd give you three thumbs up! Dave
  23. Hello everyone, sorry it took me a while to reply. Rick, I took the top off and did unscrew the bulb holder, but it seemed that the tuneing string would be in the way. I'll look at it again after ordering the bulbs. Milton, thanks for the part numbers! I would have easyly paid $15.50 myself. I've had a very lucky month. Zoran, the 9090DB is a great receiver. For loud music, or for the features its a large step up from the little HK. Also the tonal ajustment is nice for tuning out any harshness etc. in our horns. (No Blasphomy intented) I did not really play with it much. However, The "little" HK with lower volumes seems to be fuller and richer sounding. I'm not a Stereophile grade audiophile, but it seemed to "Bloom" more, and seemed a little better matched with my Fortes. This at lower background level volums. At higher volumes, the Sansui probably wins due its much greater power. I'll need to play with them more to really come to any firm conclutions. Wish I could give you more specifics, but I have not had much time to ejoy music the last few weeks Thanks again for all the input, I'll order up the bulbs soon, and bug you all again if/when I get stuck. LOL Dave
