  1. Picky's the hot sauce forum king. Here the thread, it's called flame war. http://forums.klipsch.com/idealbb/view.asp?topicID=53368&forumID=74&catID=19&search=1&searchstring=&sessionID={6F50724D-A91A-4059-9F27-E0DACFDA1836}
  2. Yup Gary, there should be some sort of law requiring anybody who is serious about music to have some Eva Cassidy on hand at all times. Bose fans exempted. Also, I'll second others and state that Acoustic Sounds is a very good site with fast shipping and a broad selection of serious music. Finally an excellent source of good music is the weekly recommendations by memebers down in DVD, Music. Tell me more you say....
  3. Antivirus software and a firewall are no longer good enough to protect your computer. What you need are two programs: Lavasoft's Ad-aware and Spybot Search and Destroy. (need two because they will find diferent things) Both free downloads and update them ocasionally as the hackers develop new programs. Also clean out your Browser's cookies and run above programs about once a month. Finally I also highly recommend Mozilla for your browser and set up a spam filter.
  4. I haven't heard the RF 25's but a good bet with Klipsch would be to check out the Denon line. I have one (2803) and am pleased with the way it works with Klipsch and many others here like the matchup. I'm sure some other folks who have the RF's will be along to give you advice so be patient and also give us some info on room placement, source etc.
  5. Yup chesky is a label, see link: http://www.chesky.com/ They have a followng because of the way they record their artists, again this is explained at the website. Now, I do caution you their mix of records is decidely ecklectic (sp). Another small label with at least one good singer is Audioquest now taken over by Valley Entertainment. Here's the're SACD list link: http://www.audioquest-music.com/sacd/ I recommend Doug MacLeod, acoustic blues. The one I have is not SACD but XRCD and is called "Come to Find" he does a tune with Charlie Musslewhite that will blow your mind if your into blues. Also not available in SACD or DVD-A but one everybody should own is almost anything by Eva Cassidy: "Songbird" and "Time After Time" being the best. I'm not the only one of this forum that will tell you that compared to her Diana Krall and Norah Jones are hard luck lounge singers.
  6. Ben, yes a lighter color, say light oak, armoire will help offset some of the giant size, but again these things workd best in big rooms with high ceilings. If you're stuck going this route here's something elese to consider: go to oriental furniture on ebay and look at some of the armoire's listed. I just did a search and the stock is low right now but with a little patience you can find something really nice, drill some holes in back for cables and your on you way. Here's arough example of what I'm talking about: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=63564&item=3751396493&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW Also down my way in Washington, DC is a major importer of this stuff. Here's alink to their ebay store that shows their listings: http://members.ebay.com/ws2/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewUserPage&userid=lubanartfurnitures They get several shipments a year and you can pick up a pretty good size armoire for I think about 500 bills, spend a weekend visiting the tourists sites and come home with the goodies. Finally I can't believe that your wife thinks Khorns are large, why they practically diappear into a room (tell her you'l let her put some artificial flowres n them).
  7. Ray's song about growing old reminded me of another of my favorites: Hello In There ©John Prine We had an apartment in the city, Me and Loretta liked living there. Well, it'd been years since the kids had grown, A life of their own left us alone. John and Linda live in Omaha, And Joe is somewhere on the road. We lost Davy in the Korean war, And I still don't know what for, don't matter anymore. Chorus: Ya' know that old trees just grow stronger, And old rivers grow wilder ev'ry day. Old people just grow lonesome Waiting for someone to say, "Hello in there, hello." Me and Loretta, we don't talk much more, She sits and stares through the back door screen. And all the news just repeats itself Like some forgotten dream that we've both seen. Someday I'll go and call up Rudy, We worked together at the factory. But what could I say if asks "What's new?" "Nothing, what's with you? Nothing much to do." Repeat Chorus: So if you're walking down the street sometime And spot some hollow ancient eyes, Please don't just pass 'em by and stare As if you didn't care, say, "Hello in there, hello."
  8. Nicholti, if you like the style of music you might want to consider Luther Vandross "Dance with my Father" on DVD-A-IMO pretty good. Also would also peruse the SACD sectin of Chesky Records. I highly recommend Sara K-sort of smooth jazz, very well recorded and detailed using no processing. Read up on how they record their artists on the site.
  9. Good one Frank! One of my faves: Eric Burdon and the Animals: In this dirty old part of the city Where the sun refused to shine People tell me there ain't no use in tryin' Now my girl you're so young and pretty And one thing I know is true You'll be dead before your time is due, I know Watch my daddy in bed a-dyin' Watched his hair been turnin' grey He's been workin' and slavin' his life away Oh yes I know it (Yeah!) He's been workin' so hard (Yeah!) I've been workin' too, baby (Yeah!) Every night and day (Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!) We gotta get out of this place If it's the last thing we ever do We gotta get out of this place 'cause girl, there's a better life for me and you Now my girl you're so young and pretty And one thing I know is true, yeah You'll be dead before your time is due, I know it Watch my daddy in bed a-dyin' Watched his hair been turnin' grey, yeah He's been workin' and slavin' his life away I know he's been workin' so hard (Yeah!) I've been workin' too, baby (Yeah!) Every day baby (Yeah!) Whoa! (Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!) We gotta get out of this place If it's the last thing we ever do We gotta get out of this place Girl, there's a better life for me and you Somewhere baby, somehow I know it We gotta get out of this place If it's the last thing we ever do We gotta get out of this place Girl, there's a better life for me and you Believe me baby I know it baby You know it too
  10. Everybody's got a favorite song/songs. Could be an oldie, could just be the one your listening to right now. I'm looking for something with lyrics. After all it's hard to hum a few bars online and expect us to know the tune. So favorite song, author and I got no problem at all if you one to drop the lyrics from the whole song or just the chorus into the mix. I'll start it out with something totally silly but has brought me a laugh or two over the years: If You Want to Be Happy (early '60's-can't remember group-later done by King Creole. Lyrics follow: f you want to be happy for the rest of your life Never make a pretty woman your wife so for my personal point of view Get an ugly girl to marry you (repeat) A pretty woman makes her husband look small And very often causes his downfall As soon as he marries her then she starts Doing the things that will break his heart But if you make an ugly woman your wife Then you will be happy for the rest of your life An ugly woman cooks meals on time She'll always give you peace of mind CHORUS If you want to be happy for the rest of your life Never make a pretty woman your wife So for my personal point of view Get an ugly girl to marry you (repeat) So if your friends say you have no taste Go ahead and marry anyway Though her face is ugly her Ieyes don't match Take it from me she's a better catch CHORUS If you want to be happy for the rest of your life Never make a pretty woman your wife So for my personal point of view Get an ugly girl to marry you (repeat) Say kid YES I saw your wife the other day UH HUH And she's ugly HA HA BUT SHE SURE CAN COOK CHORUS If you want to be happy for the rest of your life Never make a pretty woman your wife So for my personal point of view Get an ugly girl to marry you (repea)
  11. Ben, congrats on the Scout. I know you want to keep staring at your gear, but the wife's probably pushing you to the armoire. I have been in tons of houses with these things and they totally dominate a room, suck light out of the place and scew the balance between furniture, wall hangings and ambience. They are also starting to fall out of favor with the well heeled and designer set. For the cost of one of those monstors you could have a flat screen tv, keep the flexy table and keep your room from turning into a cave. I'm a painting contractor working in the high end suburbs of Washington, and unless you've got a huge, and I mean huge, room these are a fashion no,no. Despite my every effort not to learn about this stuff, I've been around too many designers, interior decorators and people that can afford the best, not to have picked up some of this stuff. Keep the eclectic dark toned look for the living room, keep the furniture in proportion to the room, and lose your current colors. Try a white ceiling with a mid-tone yellow edging towards beige for a mixture of cool and soft colors. You could also try a mid-chocolate brown but you might end with too much of a dark look. You'll end up with a room both of you will feel very at ease in yet noticably fashionable. Just reread above and I've decided if I keep this up I'm going to end up a prancing rather then walking. Seriously, share my post with your wife. It's a well meant suggestion. Also, buy some some small 4" pavers for the flexy, clean them and spray with 2 or 3 coats of varnish to darken them to the color of the floor. This should isolate all the jingles and jangles so you can send me the old TT and place the new one right where it's convenient to get to-on top of the flexy.
  12. Sweeet! Very nice job but get rid of that rack before you kill somebody, or worse yet injure your gear! Scroll down a little farther and check out the pic on the flexy rack. Several people besides me have bult them. They are cheap and look good.
  13. There are some specs for Monstor wire at www. partsexpress.com but they don't carry all types. They show 11, 12 and 16 gauge as well as something labeled OMC 10/0, OMC 15/15 and OMC 20/20.
  14. Try www. partsexpress.com They carry a 14 gauge clear jacket that if I recall correctly comes from the manufacturere that makes the monster cable. Cheaper too and very well made. It's called Sound King OFC part no. 100-145 for 50ft ($22) or part no 100-148 for 100 ft ($35). They also carry Monster cable but not sure what gauges.
  15. This continues to be a very good thread. Yup Picky it was called Bubblegum Music but I would put the coining of the phrase closer to the mid-60's. We are both of a same age and have seen these cycles come and go. Although playlists have been around for ever, there were always some local dj's and college stations thatwould bring out something new but there's really little of this these days. For example, every university in the Washington,DC area has sold their radio station to commercial interests. I'm talking Georgetown, George Washington, Catholic, and Howard. It seems to me that the suits own the music now and we are just customers to be conned into believing we have no music sense. I've walked and my car radio is now dead to me. Skonopa's call on Nightwish is right on. By the way just shared it with a friend and he called me out of the blue just to thank me for turning him onto it. I'm thinking tht with BMG, Sony, Macintosh, and Microsoft muscling in on internet music the same will hapen there too with the few holdouts too balkinized to bring and sort of mass appeal for creative, musically talented bands. Watch how internet radio follows napster after the thugs shut them down because these stations can't afford to pay the licensing fees (ps did not approve of napster and it's ilk). Hope I'm wrong.
  16. Why Clu, I do believe it's a free (shipping included) Klipsch t-shirt. Tell me more, you say...
  17. Matt. Welcome to the Forum. As you can tell we sometimes go astray, after a fashion. It would seem that a partial response to your questions is that it might not be a good idea to lay out a chunk of dough before you try the D-man's very interesting and well explained tweak. As I understand it, if you proceed you're going to have to modify the heck oout of those babies for it to work right. In other words, you can't just drop them in and expect the best. I'm lying D-man. I have no idea what you're talking about but I'm probably the least knowledgable gear guy on the forum. Quite frankly I like it like that-it cuts down on the headaches. Despite my ignorance, this is truly interesting stuff. I just want to make sure I'm translating properly the gist of your responses in case Matt is as technicaly stupid as I am.
  18. All right Nicholti-new toys to play with! Can't wait to hear a review/report. Oh PS I'll be happy to take that tired out old gear off your hands. Can't have it cluttering up the place now, can we?
  19. Thanks for stepping in Clu. Did not get back into town until late last night. My selection this week is an oldy, but a goodie: Willie Nelson "Without a Song" on lp. Soft country. For those quiter, warmer evenings everybody should have at least one Willie Nelson in their collection. This one is very soft, filled with some origianl material and a few standards. Very sweet and very well recorded in Willie's own studio. I might add that just about all of his stuff is very well recorded.
  20. I've got to go along with Picky on this one. It seems to me that music being art goes through phases. Sometimes there is a cultural, social or artistic blooming and sometimes its the same old same old. Music has it's ups and downs, but thanks to this place I know how much good music is still coming out today. What is different is that the music industry is now much more monolithic, particularly radio so we don't get as exposed to as much of it. Finally, ever hear the early Beetles. They sucked big time. Later they got very, very good. Pop is pop, it's like bubblegum, chew on it for awhile and throw it away.
  21. It seems that I am so old they named an ancient city in Greeece after me!
  22. Great topic Nicholti and one I've wondered about and scratched my head over as well. The replies have also been very thoughtful and detailed. Right now I'm using an 12 year old Yamnaha high end-dual power supply ($1000 new) cd player (18 bit)in analog to my tube amp and have often wondered if I should use it as a transport to my Denon 2803 because it is only a year old and probably has a better DAC. Or if I should just use my Pioneer 563a DVD universal player direct for 2 channel to the Denon (SACD and DVD-A are via analog). Or, of course use the Pioneer's DAC to run the sound. This stuff gets pretty confusing.
  23. I still think this can be fun so let's try it one more time. Can't get any simpler then the Beatles. The song is: Rocky Racoon I will start it with: Now somewhere in the black mountain hills of Dakota There lived a young boy named Rocky Raccoon And one day his woman ran off with another guy.... Throw in a couple of lines and pass it along>
  24. This is really great stuff especially the thread Larry linked me to. Good lord, more dough, but more music! Anybody else going to help me out with my "Opie Opus" (fini lent this one to me)
