  1. It's very nice to have the experts checking in. I appreciate it. The selector know runs like this from lower left to right EUR 78 RIAA NARTB Ortho NARTB Tape(top of selector) Tuner Tape I would guess that the consensus on the Scott would be to hook up the plug phono into Mag 2 Low in the back, set front Channel A switch to 2 and set the selector knob to RIAA NARTB Ortho? For the Fisher and any SS with a hi/low switch in back set it to low? I'm sure once I get this down I'll be able to do it without thinking. By the way, I'm listening to some Willie Nelson on the TT right now and it sounds pretty sweet, with only a rare "pop". This guy treated his equipment and his records with respect. It's good to know, also, that I might be able to track down a needle for this. Which leads to another question. The manual says a cartridge is good for about 400 hours. Are they really talking about the needel? I'll tell you how long it's been. Did you know these things have motors? Boy my finger was getting very tired trying to keep that turntable spinning at a constant speed, that is until I found the friggin start/stop switch! BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE! Do you realize there is music on both sides of an lp? That must be why they call it Long Playing! Never knew this stuff. I mean, hey, it was the 60's man! I mean when the music stopped I'd just exhale and say "Wow, that's really cool, man". Invariably someone would wander over in the direction of the speakers and more music would suddenly appear. "I'm tellin ya, it's, like, it's magic man".
  2. Thanks for responding so fast Craig. Not sure of the cartridge type. Pulled it off and guess what: it's a Shure serial number vn35he. It also says V15TypeIII. I've attached a page from the manual that shows the specifics of the cartridge and it must weigh more than 5.6 grams because the extra counterweight for cartridges weighing more than that is attached to the tone arm. Of course I have no idea how many hours the needle has on it. What's the rumble switch for?
  3. Hit an estate sale today to look over a Mac pre and amp for sale. They wanted $1500 for the pair so I ended up taking home a 1983 Sony PS-LX5 turntable instead. Cost $145 new and had only one owner. Speed control is through a quartz lock and its a linear torques direct drive system, with a fancy tone arm with adjustments for balance, tracking and anti-skating and drop. I do have the manual and as far as I can tell all adjustments are in order. Hooked it up and except for some light hiss and pops only noticeable between tracks it sounds ok. Havent used one of these in decades so I have lots of questions. Lets start with hookups Ill be using this with both SS and tubes amps/receivers at various times and am confused over the hookups. First up Scott 299A. Has nothing on the back that says phono but does have Mag1 and Mag2-Low and Mag2-High. Do I hook it to one of these and if so which one? On the front of the amp the selector only indicates a mono phono. Where do I set the selector? Also on the front their various switches called Channel A pickup switchable between 1 and 2; same for channel B; Rumble In and Out; Scratch On and Off and Rumble On and Off. I know what Loudness if for but whats the rest of this stuff for? Fisher 500C has a phono high and a phono low on back. Which one should I use? On the front it has a high and low switch and something called a MPX filter. Whats the High and MPX filter for? On a couple of my SS receivers theres a switch on the back that allow me to set it Phono sensitivity to high or low. I think you get the picture. Next question is grounding the player. Some of these receivers have two grounds one a standalone and one in the antenna hookup section. Any advice on which one to use? At the same time I picked up two test lps one called: Stereo Imaging Demonstration Record by Ohm Acoustics and the Micro Acoustics Transient Tracking Ability Test demo record. Should I be using these things or were they just glorified advertising? Grab all question. What else do I need to know? Also would a fancy cartridge be of benefit to this low budget player?
  4. Wheelman, the t-shirts will be given out once a month, don't have the dough to give them out more than that. What I do is assign a number to each music recommendation, not general chat (general chat's encouraged but doesn't count towrads the drawing), then I throw the numbers in a bowl, pick one out and we have a winner. Last month for example there were about 40 recommendations so the odds of winning were one in forty. No need to load up the recommendations though just to increase your chances of winning. It's just my way of getting people to stop by and share some good music.
  5. I gotcha. Too obscure. Oh well. Maybe some people who still have ductails and still wear pegged pants will show up and get a kick out of it.Forget the Khorns, what you really need is a '59 Chevy.
  6. Speed, if they are trying to get you try the soundtrack save your money. It's not Indiana Jones, but visually it's a gem.
  7. You're right Gary. Although very popular at the time, unless you've ever listeend to an oldies, oldies station you may not have heard it. BUT, there's a good chance you have. Let's bring it up to the chorus: ...When his engine roared, they called the highway Thunder Road. Sometimes into Ashville, sometimes Memphis town The revenoors chased him but they couldnt run him down Each time they thought they had him, his engine would explode He'd go by like they were standin still on Thunder Road. (CHORUS) And there was thunder, thunder over Thunder Road Thunder was his engine, and white lightning was his load There was moonshine, moonshine to quench the Devils thirst The law they swore they'd get him, but the Devil got him first.
  8. Clu, poetry, pain, promise, feelings, loss, life, joy, lyrics, phases, rememberances, motion, moments, emotion, love, anger, acceptance, denial, outrage, bliss, joy, melancholy. The song of life is writtne in the lyrics of our poets. No other reason to listen to music otherwise.
  9. CLUUUUUUUUUUUU! (For some reason I'm having fun typing capital and streching out wrod stonight) That was funny, but your follow on words were wrong. It's The Ballad of Thunder Road not hat johnny-come-lately Bruce Springstein. Here's another line: His daddy made the whisky, son, he drove the load....
  10. It's the weekend, the Twins are not mad at me (for the momment) so we've decided to throw a PARTEEEEY. The tubes are warmned up the changer turned on, and oh, did I mention the Twins brought some friends with them? I didn't. Well here's the story. Last weekend the Twins were at the first annual international Doublemint Chewing Gum Convention, right here in good old Washington, DC. They made some friends and brought them with them. Over there in the corner chatting away are the Colorado Twins, Heather and Bubbles. In the kitchen, pouring out the Pernod are our overseas friends from the world's major source of beautiful women: Paris, France. "Colette, Francois una Pettite por favor, merci? Seavo plait, una word mit le membre de la Klipsh Forum cest plait." "We We mon Thebes. 'Allo americans!!! Que'est le musik?" It's raining outside so I can't grill, I'm low on booze and I have no snacks. Got some Burning Spear on right now but the Twins have heard most of my music so what are you bringing to the party? Oh, OH, Slammin's acting strange around Bubbles. Got to go. Don't bother knocking just come on in!
  11. Ok it's friday night let's try this again. Maybe we'll actually finish a song this time. Tonight's selection is that 50's (early 60's?) classic The Ballad of Thunder Road. This is a great song from an era that would produce about one of these a week. This song is The Duke of Earl with an attitude. A genuine 50's ballad. Now, I don't ant to exclude anybody since this song is so old it's ok to look up the lyrics on the net. Drop a couple of lines in, pass it on, and let's see how far we get. I start it off with the opening lines which are: Here's the first line from that early rock classic Ballad of Thunder Road: Let me tell the story, I can tell it all About the mountain boy who ran illegal alcohol....
  12. SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET! Please PM me with your home address and where you hide the extra key. Thank you.
  13. Got rained out of work today so I caught the very first showing of this in my town and I'm not disappointed at all. Awesome feel and ambience to the movie, great schenary, visuals, special effects etc. Highly recommended you see it on the big-screen to fully appreciate it. Music is standard poor man's Indiana Jones and added exactly nothing, if not less, to the movie. Gof or it!
  14. Picked up a Monster 3500 at an estate sale last weekend for $156. No change in audio but some improvement in picture. I also have a AR line conditioner on my other system, same result for 1/2 the money. Leo recently purchased a Belkin line conditioner after considerable research on the circuitry and he noticed a audio difference and considers it a worthwhile tweak at $80. I live in a town house and don't have any of the problems in power supply you would find in apartments, condos, rural areas etc. so I wouldn't rule out their usefullness but I'm sceptical. If rearranging your cables, wires etc. doesn't take care of speaker hum, IMO chances are it's in your receiver. Kinda doubt these conditioners would be the solution for most (not saying all) hum issues. Also, from what I've read the Monsters are MOV. Finally that there fini can really parse a phrase (wonder what he'll do with that).
  15. I guess I'm suprised by the answers. Except for redtop (thanks for the a/b by the way) the consensus seems to be thier is no comparison. I thought it would be a matter of degree not night and day. Anybody want to swap me even up for so I can get a pair of Cornies?
  16. My favorite tweak is to simply close my eyes. An immediate 15 to 20 percent improvement in the sounnd.
  17. What a totally bizarre list. Some stuff I'd like to check out on it though, but to my mind a very sloppy effort. In pop alone only no Beatles, no Dylan nothing from Woodstock. In blues no Muddy Waters. If I knew classical music better I'd probably be livid. Good coverage on Show tunes. Jazz-gotta question their choices. Movies, nothing from the Marx Brothers! Sounds like a future Klipsch Forum project: Top 10 by music type. Coming soon to a BB near you.
  18. For those of you who have heard both could you describe for me in general terms what you would consider the major differences sound wise between the two series? I know thge KG's are supposed to be primarily rockers, but they sound find to me on almost any type of music. My systems are KG and (5.2's and 3.5's. 1.5's etc.) The only heritage I've heard are Larry Clare's fabulous Khorns. I'm not thinking of switichng out, just curious that's all.
  19. Good one Picky. Major LOL. Yup that looks more like me but in my mind's eye I still have hair!
  20. Maybe it's me but the link gives me an empty green screen.
  21. Tangeine Dream. I loved their acid stuff. They made the soundtrack for a really wierd movie I liked a long time ago. Can't remember the movie, though. Anybody?

    Gov't Mule

I'd like to see them, only caveat is I thnk the drummer is a pain but a do like their music.
  23. Mini khorns, hmmm. Let's see desktops have no corners, so they would have to be modified at least with mini-false corners, then we'd need mini-tube monos to go with them, hmmm then we'd need mini turntables with really, really small lp's holding aobut 30 seconds of music, hmmm then there's the whole min-cable issue, a 1/4 size push/pull triode whatever, hmm this could keep us busy for months. I like it!
  24. Hey Audio, here's an old picture of me with Andre the Giant. You could cut and paste and put your head on my body and use that for your avatar. With Andre as a friend I can guarantee that nobody would think of messing with you.
  25. My main system is tied in with my surround HT so that doesn't count, but my basement system is solely 2 channel, lthough it's near my computer monitor so I can listen while typing funnies for this forum. Kinda wierd though listening to muic on the main system because my sweet spot is right in front of the TV. All to often I find myself staring at a blanck screen which distracts me from the music. I guess I will have to start thinking of it as a blank canvas on which to paint the colors and images brought to me by the music.
