  1. Ok, at the risk of restricting input here goes: 1" or 2" (2" preferred), not fussy on material used (phenolic, foil, titanium etc), capable of going down to 300hz with a max to 7khz (3way) or 2 way from 500hz to 19khz. I really don't know price and prefer not to go new but knowing that a change out of diaphragm may be a possibility. Thanks for the advice
  2. Hi everyone, I would like to know what your top 5 mid range compresssion drivers may be as opposed to say the K55 or Atlas driver. I haven't much experience with these and am looking to do some 'fiddling' with a speaker build project. Make and model and any other comments would be well received. Love to hear from you Thanks
  3. yep, about 1/3 the size of a tennis ball, they are rubber and shaved!
  4. The best 'bang for a buck' is using squash balls cut in half as feet. They are superb vibration and accoustic de-couplers. With cartridges go onto ebay and look for Ortofon OM/LM 20, 30 or the more expensive 40. Some great bargins when they come up and probably one of the best low mass MM money can buy. Next upgrade your arm to a Rega (or re-branded) 250 or 300, again some bargains out there for this type of arm (lots around). For a few hundred bucks you'll have a turntable set-up equivalent to a few thousand! Cheers
  5. Thanks Guys, Yes I meant to mention the 'hole' from 300 to 500. It appears the Jub deals with it better which allows for a more diverse range of 'top end' solutions. I had the LS years ago but found it too boomy (didn't know much about room set up in those days). Just got to find my way around the wife allowing me to keep my Khorns while I save up for a Jub. I do like my Khorns. Wonder if Rigma does kits? Cheers
  6. ...set up my Khorns in a 2way configuration, what would be the best crossover using the K402 (driver and lens), a tractrix with K55 or going with any other suggestions. It's no doubt been brought up here before but I have to ask in light of some of the refinements going on. From what I gather the Khorn is probably best crossed at about 300hz and nor more than 350hz. There are some great (not cheap) drivers from B & C that could accompany the Khorn from (500 to 20,000). Thanks guys.
  7. Gil, The Forte II's had a problem with glue separation from the woofer surrounds...maybe that could be causing your problem
  8. Yes the tractrix was a big improvment it opened up the sound stage and by poitioning it with the tweeter in a vertical plane I can now get a solid centre image. I had my younger son (16) with me last night and we were listening to some heavy rock (Metalicca, ACDC,Ramstein). He still can't get over how I have the singers out in front, centre stage. A helmholtz resonator or two also helps. Mostly though, you get a good recording with an engineer who knows what to do and bingo there are the musicians in the room with you! I have a spare pair you could try out but unfortunately I live way down south and freight to your door would be a killer. I am actually one of the few who likes the AK4 network when (from memory) I compare with what I had many years ago (KHORN 1976). The bass is enormous when set up right but I would like to experiment with active crossover networks...when time permits. Cheers
  9. Hi, I have owned Heresy and Forte II, not sure what the newer Heresy does but I did fall in love with the Forte II. PWK said that he liked the Forte as it produce a 1/2 more octave at the bottom. Better height ratio and not as brittle as the H use to be but I think the H has had a few makeovers since my time with them. If looking used (compared with new H) go for the F II, the 15" massive passive really puts out a punch for the price you currently pay for these. Cheers
  10. Hi, I too have a pair of AK4 2004 KHORNS and have done some extensive 'fiddling' with these but not to the crossover network...yet! It is important to get some good gear to play through these beasts. The more cleaner, clearer and faster the better. I have found that the K401 is not flash when compared against a tractrix (rather dull and 2D). I built my own tractrix lens and combined with some room treatments have dramatically improved the sound. I now use Bob's tweeter and have positioned this in a vertical plane on the inside edge of the tractrix. I found the closer you get the tweeter to the tractrix the more mid/high integration you achieve. Each speaker has its own corner where they sit snug and the tractrix/tweeter are pointed about 1m short of my listening position (I have them sitting on top of the bass bin as I have removed the 'top hat'). I get 3D! Sometimes scares the life out of visitors (love doing this). Cheers
  11. Hi and welcome. Try playing with a few setups. The F2's like to be away from walls and help the 'massive passives' work the room better. Try this site http://www.cardas.com/content.php?area=insights&content_id=26&pagestring=Room+Setup. Cheers
  12. BC Speakers have some pretty nifty speakers http://www.bcspeakers.com/index.php?sez=1&categoria=4 The DE1000 and DE1050 from 500 to 20,000 cycles now that is impressive!
  13. Thanks for your help guys and well done Big D
  14. Thanks for that. I say 'mid' as it just is too big to be a tweet but I find that this driver seems to be a carefully guarded secret. Cheers
  15. Cheers...If I may, who makes the mid driver?
  16. I take that they are 12'' woofers... are they Eminence or something else that were used?
  17. Where's Boris and Angela when you need them...too much electrical current?
  18. Hi, I have flung this around from time to time http://www.humblehomemadehifi.com/Cap.html this guy experiments with lots of caps and keeps on updating his work and most times he seems to be on the money but 'horses for courses' Cheers
  19. Hi All, I have built a couple of tractrix horns for K55's. The most recent I had decided to play with its dimensions. I am no math wizard nor a student of horn dimensions but I can follow a plan. The most recent horn I followed more closely ALK's tractrix plans/equations but I extended the throat from the point of the mouth of the K55 (if that makes sense). The length of the horn from the point of the mouth of the K55 to its end is approx 15.5" but has a 2"L x 1" W (circular) aperture leading into 13.5" of the traxtrix out to 18" wide by 7 3/16" high (opening only). With some experimetation around +/- 1" I have discovered to my amazement that this traxtrix with the longer throat is superior in that it delivers greater clarity and presentation of instruments and artists across the soundstage. It intergrates very well with the Crites tweeter. I have done no measurements but just used my ears based on my broad tastes in music and the 'live punchiness' I enjoy. What have I done? Any one help with the math? Cheers
  20. Does anyone have a side by side Khorn v Jubilee response curve? Cheers
  21. Great work. I have been contemplating building similar sort of boxes for the tractrix I have built. It is great when you have the freedom the move the 'top end' around so that it can be better positioned to your listening area. Are you using a tractrix? I found by building one of these and putting the tweeter in the vertical (as EV suggests) things really improve.Did you go under the bass bin with your extension or rest against its sides? Cheers
  22. Go for the Khorns if you have the chance and the cash. I have had a number over the years (Heresy, Corns, LS & Forte) and the Khorn to me goes deeper but also has the height to make things seem more 'real' on the sound stage. I have built a tractrix lens to sit in place of the top hat and it is just magic. My room is a fraction bigger than yours with 9' ceiling and I have put the Khorns on the smaller wall but have added a fair bit a room treatement to tidy up the loose bottom end. My seating position is back where I have been able to tune in the deeper bass notes (35-40hz). When you get there you just can't stop getting goosebumps and that is my test. Good Luck
