  1. Have a look at this http://www.mother-of-tone.com/attraction.htm it may give you some ideas or this http://www.mother-of-tone.com/lacquer.htm if you believe! Cheers
  2. The new batteries of today (see the Optima Red) last 10 years or more and they don't leak or need a 'refill'. Just give 'em a charge every know and then
  3. Well I am about to put a review down on the Altmann BYOB AMP http://www.mother-of-tone.com/byob.htm. When you listen to this tiny little wonder it will change your views about BIG and SS. Cheers
  4. What a drop! Bob, how do your tweets compare with these plots? Cheers
  5. Bugger! I was gonna say something but I forgot. Must be the 'hot air' comin from the north wafting down under!
  6. Hi, Check this out! may be of interest http://www.mother-of-tone.com/attraction.htm. Cheers
  7. Yeah, I think it has got to be worth a look but the price is a bit steep. I am use to seeing a bit more for that sort of money but I have learned in aduio anything is possible. I do remember an amp/pre-amp manufacturer in the states that did develop a 'battery' amp. I am sure the organization was N.E.W. but they went out of business!
  8. Hi Again, It appears to have 10w per side and is driven by a car battery and is well suited to efficient speakers.
  9. Hi All, Was wondering if anyone out there has come across the Altman BYOB DAC and Amp. Here is the site www.mother-of-tone.com. The units and their ability are quite different from the norm. I am interested in your toughts Cheers
  10. Hang on a little longer say 50 plus hours and you'll find Bob's tweats 'open up' some more and you will get a more pronounced top end, sweeter than the k77. Cheers
  11. Great stuff, how long did it take and what plans did you use? Cheers
  12. Hi, Given that the speakers are properly sealed in appropriate corners the best thing you can do is make sure your room is adequately treated. Getting the 'room right' is the difference between night and day. Cheers
  13. Some interesting observations. I guess musical or accurate is a bit like how you like your car to drive: pleasurable or accurate! I'll pick accurate every time becasue to me accurate implies 'pleasurable' same with music. What is accuracy? As some of you have pointed out that music, by the time we hear it, has been played with or pumped through a system that may alter it from its original source. Even after listening to many live concerts then listening to a chamber orchestra, a small jazz ensemble or even a rock group in a good room without amplification or tricks, you will know there is a difference. Even the room & listening position is capable of changing the dynamics and sometimes this 'live' music may not sound as good as that which is played with or amplified. Who knows what's real, the technicians will always disagree with the audio lover? Leave it up to your ears, if they are working well they will be 'accurate' and will always be your best judge for 'musical', we are born this way. Cheers
  14. I have replaced my 'F's' with Bob's and I am not going back. So what about it Klipsch?
  15. I did ask once what the colors mean...this is the response I received from one of the technical boffins.. "On the Coupling series caps, the red lead is the inner foil's edge and >should be connected as the output side of the cap, towards the the next >stage in the circuit. If the output side of circuit is not obvious (or >if used in parallel, say in a crossover or as a power supply bypass), >then connect the red lead to the lower potential side. On the Speaker >MusiCap series, the lead with the blue stripe is equivalent to the the >red lead, so the same above guidelines apply. The capacitors will of >course work fine in either direction, but we think you will find that >or suggestions will yield a more natural, less fatiguing >presentation--though not quite as initially "exciting" as going the >other way". There you have it Believe It Or Not!
  16. Hey Bob, Is the mid horn a PH2380P? Does the Atlas (K55) screw right in as from memory the thread should be the same? Looks looks a tractrix
  17. I must admit that the BEC tweeter is a great mod and also pointing the Khorns to the listening position with a tight coupling to corners makes a world of difference to your listening pleasure.
  18. Congrats Al! I have been using Sonicaps for some time (I beleive they are in Klipsch country) they replaced the Hovlands in my pre-amp. I found them to have better tonal balance and decay. Their bottom end was bigger & tighter than Hovland, where Hovlands had a more pronouced top end with more detail. I thought Hovlands also seemed to have more loudness & pitch to the Sonicaps. Is you network capable of a tweet crossover at 4500hz?
  19. Lots of threads have been produced on lots of mods done to Khorns and they are all engaging but I get lost. I would really like to know what works best; given the following: The Khorn retains its looks, size and shape with the K33, K55 and K77 but with the exception that the K400/401 may be substituted with Al'S Trachorn and the K77 may also be substituted with the Crites tweeter and any network may be used. What is the best combination with an appropriate network (giving the crossover frequencies) and why does this work best for you? What are your 'sound' experiences over the standard box? Happy Easter
  20. I have done it! Beleive you me that it is time consuming and not good for your nails or teeth (I did it the old fastioned way) but I really think it was worth it. I used Belden Cat5, stripped the 'blue' outer casing away and combined the inner cables (single core teflon). Mine was only 2m per side times 3. It works on the old principle the 'thicker the better'! A bit like me!
  21. JJ you forgot pot smoking and beverage consumption! My simple test is to let your ears do the tesing in an environment that is operated under normal conditions and that the environment is kept the same whilst undertaking R & D. I don't make stuff that is purpose built for SET, TUBE, SS, Analogue, DC, Digial etc etc. I would think that by playing with cables you ultimately affect capacitance, inductance/resistance and and impeadance values of the 'system' you are connecting too. Some say the values are so small that they are not noticeable by most but I notice as do some others. General rule: If you don't care or notice then don't bother, it's not worth it. If you do care then take time out to notice more! It is all about noticing a difference and the satisfaction or even dissatisfaction that comes from it.
  22. yes thanks chops I was trying to upload with the icon 'insert image' in the 'message' area. All single strand and stiff as a board! Currently working on a 2 stranded version (different core values) using the DH Labs RCA'S. Little more fiddly with the winding but am impressed with definition in the mid range. I guess I am one of those who believes that using different IC'S can make a difference to the sound coming from a system that is finely tuned. But I confess I am a convert. I did not believe initially, what changed my mind was corporations charging big bucks for kit that only looked good...thought that I could do that for much less and could actually sound better. My experimentations, some blind testing and a few ctritics helped.
