  1. Hi Al, Can the CP25 be slipped straight into the AK4 Khorn crossover? Cheers
  2. Hi All, Can anyone tell me what was the better mid driver? The K55-V (both versions), K55-M or the current model K55-X. Are they all the same? Cheers
  3. Hi Guys, Does anyone know what a K556 driver is or a KP-66-E. Are they the same or similar to a K55V and do they have the same thread? Thanks
  4. Each! Ouch! I see that the older K77M is about half that for 2! Do you know if they ('M' & 'F")are interchangeable?
  5. Hi Bob, Are you saying that the current diaphrams used in the K77F are inferior the the older EV model? Is there any difference in sound or are we talking about quality and longevity? Guess I'll have to get a couple of replacements while they are in stock! Thanks
  6. Hi N, I am a 'trial and error' guy sometimes even going back over old ground but I will attempt to take some pix and post a brief on my experiences at the weekend. I don't think I'll ever finish 'fooling around' (with electronics that is), the wife recons I should be doing something else with my time, but eh! All the best
  7. From OZ to AUS Hi There! I spent some time in Vienna and Salzburg many years ago. A beautiful country. I have no experience with Mundorf but read they are suppose to be 'it' in the Cap world. Try logging onto http://home.zonnet.nl/geenius/Cap.html, this guy has done a few tests using a number of different caps but I believe it is all system related. I have a few recordings I use to test the ssssssss's (Kate Bush has lots of them.) If I don't hear them I have a problem. It is how I hear them in relation to other recordings that use better equipment and different mics for the performers. I have learnt that some caps (old and new) can really tear out the ssssss's or bring them back in as they were recorded or even exaggerate them. Listening to the rest of the instruments and vocals brings it all into persective. This is what I believe Sonicaps do over Hovlands (with some help using appropriate resistance values). I am using Khorns an SS amp and detailed digital gear so I am tweaking the pre to let the union of all this gear do the talking naturally as it was recorded good bad and ugly, that's my goal! I know it has been debated on this forum but I am a big fan of using different interconnect cables. Some do have an effect on capacitance and resistance in a system that is capable of picking up these little nuances. So I think choosing wisely with interconnects (also speakers cables) is also important. I make my own because most manufacturers chronically overcharge to what you get for the price. I have done some interconnect 'a' 'b' testing with friends and have demonstrated that 'there is a difference' in some not all cables. Good Luck
  8. Hi, Logon to www.cardas.com and try out the 'Golden Cube'its a new variation on an old idea of relativity. Cheers
  9. Hi Again, "Fooling around" is changing out caps but also playing with values. Not alot, just enough in a pre. You can do the same in an amp and speakers. I have currently come down 0.1uf from an original value but have used a combination of caps. I have found Hovlands to be extreme with detail (staging) but some unwanted 'loudness' effects. The Sonicaps allow for deep deep bass with a detailed midrange but the top end is back a little. I have combined and at the moment the sound is better than what was in the original box as I have tweaked to my tastes which I beleive to be closer to reality. Cheers from down under!
  10. Guys, It does start from the source (recording) but good quality components help 'the source' from degradation. I have changes the caps and resistors is my pre-amp from metalized paper to Hovland and Sonicaps. Am also trying out certain resitors in the signal path with some interesting results. The better the cap the better the sound but not so with resistors IMO. I find that by 'playing around' there is a noticeable refinement to the sound I was getting. It is a tube pre which works well with my SS gear, amazing what can be done in the pre-amp. I am considering the amp but have to work up the courage. Be prepared to spend some time fooling around. I guess this 'fooling around' is something that is missing in some mass produced gear. No one realy listens, just produces to a price point! Cheers
  11. Hi there, I'm currently playing around with caps and resistors in my pre-amp and believe me these have an effect on the sound of the sssssssssssss's. Use female voices they tend to 'test' your system as to its harshness, brightness and sweetness. I agree that it starts with the recording but ends up through your speakers. You just have to make sure your system doesn't add anything to the recording. Cheers
  12. Hey bluesboy, www.shinallandcompany.com are still around they make the Khorn box from about $US2,500 and fully loaded for $US3,500. I am not sure what their quality is like nor the drivers they use but their specs seem to be the same as that of the Khorn before the AK4. regards
  13. Hey Al, You know where the tweeters sit in the current stock Khorn (no mods) on top of the K401 mouth, what if they where moved to the vertical position inboard or out? Looks like there is space there, would you consider it to be a noticeable improvement over current positioning? Cheers
  14. Thanks 'bluesboy' I'm awaitin' Will the design be the current design that Klipsch use as I believe there have been some small mods over the years? Cheers
  15. bluesboy, I would be interested in your pricing of the 'bass bin kit', knocked up and in a 'flat pack' for shipping. I roughly know AL's pricing and could put some of the numbers together to ship to that great land down under. Cheers
  16. Guys, I think we have the makings of some great ideas here that could possibly be marketed in kit or fully built form. Now I'm gonna be controversial and do some dreaming! There is so much information on this site about what could be considered the best design for a fully horn loaded speaker; why don't you do soemthing about it? Assemble an on-line team to design and market what could be considered the best horn loaded speaker on offer, that won't cost a fortune. Gather the Intellectual Capital, throw in some bucks, maybe Klipsch would be interested, wrap it up in a body corporate (with agreements & understandings as to inputs and outcomes from the project)and you have an entity that could take PWK's design a little further and possibly more affordable! Consider this. You could have bluesboy building the bottom end, the upper end could be designed to house a classic Klipsch design or one of AL's Trachorns and the crossovers and driver units be 'the best of breed' as decided by a panel of experts (that'll be interesting). Can't build too much flexibility in the design as it would cost too much. From here you could set up the design and manufacture process, warehouse logistics, select your market channels, potentially from this forum and deliver! Phew! I'll get off my medication and review what I just said. Doable or not?
  17. Could not have said it better! Have fun, enjoy Cheers
  18. Hi Guys, I'm reading lots in these posts and do understand that the equipment, technique, mic placement and cues located within the room in the recording all add to the experience of listening. Whether you are sitting in the audience at a rock concert or in front of a symphony orchestra you simlpy won't get front to back and side to side that you could get from a recording. The recording in a lot of sessions is made from all directions but is manipulated for intamacy in your home. So given this, some people have used the Fibonacci Method (Golden Ratio)to enhance their experience of listening in their rooms. I have used this method (can't do it on corner horns) with other arrays in the placement of stereo speakers and it does highten the listening experience and does give you more spatial cues to the recording, as though your are in the MIDDLE of the performers or close by. It is not for some people but try it, you have nothing to lose other than a few hours and may shed a few pounds because you need to do a bit of work in moving your speakers around the room. Also room treatments do a lot to enhance experience and add to the effect you desire. There are some sites on this (Cardas) and XLO did put out a disc on speaker set-up back in the mid 90's. Have a go! Cheers
  19. Thanks Guys for your honesty. What sort of caps would you recommend? I have just made some changes to my tube pre-amp using Hovlands (what a significant improvement) and have ordered some Sonicaps to try out. Mundorf Mcap supremes seem to be getting a lot of accolades but are not cheap. If I change out the caps will this lead to other tweaks being needed? Ciao
  20. Hi Guys, Would anybody be aware of how the Trachorn may sound with a pair of AK4 Khorns? Would I need some 'taming' on the top end? Al, I read that some tweaking may be needed, what are your thoughts? I am still keen in giving it a go. Only problem is shipping costs to get these wooden marvels down below to Australia! Cheers
  21. I must say that when I first heard a pair of Khorns (used) then got them home it was a dissapointment. I lived with them for a while, then let them go. Stuck with the Heresys, had La Scala, auditioned the Corns then got a pair of Forte II'S (Heresys on steroids) and stuck with them for awhile. Now years later (with much more knowledge and a little more money)I purchased another pair of Khorns. Screwed with my room, wife thought I was nuts (probably am) but boy, front to back and side to side-its all there! It truley is amazing what room treatments can do to 'visualizing' sound (apart from an ugly look in my case)with the Khorns. I remember talking to one dealer before my purchase and he was saying that the Khorns still had a big sound with superb side to side but were lacking front to back. He was telling the truth until I started experimenting with the room and tweaking my system. Now front to back has the depth I have come to know with other speakers. Sure the 3D aspect of sound is surreal, some say bull, but it works for me, I like being placed 'inside' the music! Cheers
  22. Hi D-Man I have had most of the Heritage line-up over the last 30 odd years and found that the Khorns, to be at their best, need a room that could handle them (corners and acoustic treatments)! You get that right and their is no turning back but I must say the little Heresy speakers are still hard to beat for thier size. Good Luck
  23. Hi, I have gone down that road with my gear and went back to a dedicated CD player simply because the sound appeared (to me at least) better, as I beleive the transport and laser mechanism in a CD is built for sound only. The DVD is a combo but most concentrate on the visuals. However there are some supurb DVD players that have some excellent sound characteristics where most people would not pick up a difference when copmared to a same quality CD player. Have Fun
