  1. Thanks guys for your comments. I have to whole-heartedly recommend this amp to anyone starting out with tubes. Just as it was recommended to me by a friend when I was confused about the whole tube issue.

And Moore' comments both written and in the media have created such a negative feeling in me that in all honesty I could not sit and watch his movie without feeling somehow - debased. So before anyone else asks, no I haven't seen the movie and I don't want to. But I respect the views of others and their right to see it.
  3. Another one to consider is 'Agnus Dei' - Music of Inner Harmony by The Choir of New College, Oxford. On Erato (Warner Music) number 0630-14634-2. Just listen to the opening track, Barber's Agnus Dei. No musical instruments, just choir. On the Klipschorns it makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck. Just like my wife does when she says; "Okay, it's time for your haircut?" at the same time as she's sharpening the hairdressing scissors!

I read the review a couple of years ago but I can't load and paste this article on this site.
  7. I concede that our passion, being hi-fi, and all that our passion entails, is market driven. Golfing enthusiasts, car nuts, and other probably insane interests, provide a captive, easily exploited and manipulated consumer group. And I acknowledge that certain companies are doing well financially by moving their manufacturing bases off shore. But the point I'm making is, no-one is benefiting, except a few boardroom types who probably don't need the money anyway. You can bet your bottom dollar that these paper corporations are not investing their profits back into their country of origin. You can bet they're not investing in productivity agreements with U.S. workers, both skilled and unskilled. You can bet they're not providing trainee and apprenticeship (skilled trade) programs for young school and college leavers. You can bet they've trashed or sold off irreplaceble manufacturing equipment. So my point is? Where's my discount?

Tubes or not, low power is low power.... So I'd go with a push-pull amp of 20 watts or more. ---------------- Yes, thinking about it, and after following the thread 'To SET or not to SET' I agree with Paul. After being used to solid state power, moving to low powered tube for you may not be a wise move. You could keep both amps and interchange as you feel in the mood. The Kenwoods probably sound nice and will give you plenty of punch. The tubes would be nice for lower level listening. Regardless of my appreciation of certain attributes of low powered tube amps, I have still stuck to good old fashioned tube PP with 20 plus watts rating per channel. Plenty of power and most of the richness people imagine tube amps should have. When I update soon, it may very well be something like a KT88 tube integrated. There are some nice one's around with 30 to 40 watts per channel. Go and listen to some tube amps before you commit.
  9. jt1stcav. You're not related to Chops by any chance? Same erotic pictures. Yum!
  10. I don't doubt that there are many fine craftsmen and women in South East Asia. I have been to several countries in this region and I have seen what fine skills they are capable of. The point I'm making is that many mid to high end manufacturers are taking advantage of their good name by outsourcing manufacturing, and not passing the savings on to us. Bearing in mind the whole component is made and assembled and even boxed in 3rd world countries! The items in question are branded with famous, no, legendary hi-fi names. I think that's a bit deceitful. I'm not taking issue with OEM manufacturers or prominent U.S. hi-fi companies such as Klipsch or Jolida who outsource certain electrical components. In these cases we benefit because at the lower end of the market Klipsch and Jolida pass the cost savings on to us - high value gear for small money.
  11. Well, Whooz your mama? Well done. A big step in the right direction. Be prepared for shocksville! It'll take a while before your ears adjust to the dynamics and clarity of a true Klipsch classic. It's apparent in not just the sheer loudness of the music, but in the little things. You'll hear all the harmonics of an acoustic guitar string, the actual wood body of the guitar. The drawing of a breath in closely miked vocals. It's all there. And other things too - you'll hear stuff in recordings that you didn't even know were there. Welcome to true musical reproduction. Now all we have to do is get you interested in some decent music!
  12. Okay, this one should be right. Edit: Sorry no go on this one either. But enjoy the picture above. It's a great amp and quite well put together for a Chinese amp. Although final assembly is done in the States. Sound overall is very good, particularly in the midrange. As you hit the frequency extremes the bass tends to soften a little and the treble region is a little curtailed. The Jolida has plenty of drive though - rated around 50 watts per channel. But I reckon this would be with a wet sail. 18 to 20 watts continuous is more likely. I have never had my amp past the 12 o'clock mark - it's just too loud.
  13. Sorry the download didn't work here.
  14. My JoLida JD202A Integrated Tube amp. This is the core of my current system. Recently retubed with Svetlana EL34 tubes with about 50 hours burn in, it is showing signs of being a fine, low cost match with the Klipschorns.
  15. Sounds like you have a good system in mind. Go for the tube amp, you could still listen at reasonable levels and you'll get that clarity and detail that you're hoping for. I've got a pair of KLF10's as well. I think the 20's are a better speaker than mine. The horn midway and treble unit make for a richer midrange.

But I think Moore is acting like a prosecuter, or is it a hanging judge, in a court of law. He represents only his client (whomever or whatever that may be) using tainted and highly dubious facts to support his case. At the same time he neglects what others may consider to be highly relevant material - simple things like truth, objectivity, rational thinking, etc, etc.

  19. If I put on Neo 33's hat, the answer will, of course! If I put on Paul Parrot's hat, the answer will be no way! It's really hard to say because everyone's subjective comfortable listening level is different. The KLF's sensitivity is around 97db for 1 watt measured at one metre. So if you listen in your smallish room and don't listen at very loud levels, 3.5 watts will certainly drive your speakers. When you are attempting to reproduce concert hall levels on the KLF's, there's no way 3.5 watts will be enough. However, if your amps are of good quality, and you intend to upgrade to the Heritage series later like the Klipschorn/Belle/La Scala, then you could make do with lower listening levels while you wait for the upgrade. I'm sure other forum members are just champing at the bit to give you some great advice. If you post your amp and other system details the forum experts can better advise you.
  20. I think that's the rudder you're referring to.

Even when the music stopped, the cones were still moving. ...If anyone has any comments or suggestions, I am open to them. Thanks ---------------- Sorry about the late response to your query. Your speaker cones moving in and out like that probably means they're responding to low frequency rumble. This could be sourced from your turntable. Maybe you have a worn main bearing on your turntable or it's running dry. Maybe you could oil it. It could also be mains hum. Check your cabling/earthing etc. One last thing, it could be rumble from the pickup tracking on the recording. Many production built phono/preamps fitted to receivers and integrated amplifiers have rumble filters already built in or provide a switch to activate the filters.

I paid $160 Australian for them as matched pairs. Although reading the rest of this thread, I hope I bought the right one's. I was told they were the best. Maybe I could have bought better.
  24. The KG5.5's were my very first Klipsch loudspeaker way back in the early 90's. I owned a pair of Missions back then but they didn't have the drive I was looking for. I took my speakers into a local hi-fi store. He demo'd a number of British floorstanders as an upgrade. Nothing appealed - they were flat sounding and anemic. Then he took me into the back storeroom where he had set up a pair of 5.5's with a NAD 3020. Did they boogie! I bought a pair with the 3020 and I have never looked back. I've moved on since then to other Klipsch products, but buy the 5.5's, you won't be disappointed.
  25. The HK340 was a well designed unit made back in HK's heyday. Specs or no specs, I'd expect the HK to be superior in all aspects of sound quality - and HK sounds good with Klipsch!
