  2. Chops. Please don't post pictures like that on this forum. My heart can't take it! The KT88's in full flight look more desirable than Kate Hudson.
  3. ...And for years I owned LS 3/5a's. I bought a pair when I first heard them in a recording studio back in the early 80's. I was working in commercial radio back then. But they were the most frustrating loudspeaker I never heard. They had the most wonderful sound but just as I started getting into the music and tried to turn the volume up, the bass driver bottomed out I sold my pair only last year to a friend. While PP tube with a bit of power would be ideal to drive this speaker to it's somewhat limited volume maximum, I couldn't imagine driving a pair with a low powered SET design.

Some may argue that he is opinionated, biased, egocentric, eccentric, and just plain ornery! But that doesn't mean to say he's wrong(?) (Sorry Neo.) But without doubt Paul's comments are witty, considered and....okay, biased, but still fun. Now that I've got that off my chest, I think I'll get myself some of that icecream.

  6. I believe the 6550's are a more commercial and robust variation on the KT88's. I'm told that the KT88's are more musical while the 6550's are more punchy. I've heard some stories that the KT88's are a little more fragile as well. I've just retubed my Jolida 202 with Svetlana's EL34s and they are currently going through burn in. Already I've noticed an incredible increase in soundstage, imaging and dynamics. One could argue that this was because my previous stock tubes were near the end of their life - not so with only 1000 hours. The EL34's are a great tube, very musical, and for paupers like me, even top line Svetlana's cost very little.

Yup when people make redicules statements like you just did above then this subject does really get old. Tell us NEO exactly what does 3rd order harmonic distortion sound like ? Craig ---------------- 3rd order harmonic distortion? What does it sound like? That's a good question. I understood even order distortion components give a 'sweetness to the sound' whilst uneven order distortion sounds unpleasent to the ear. Class A/B solid state amplification is more inclined to exhibit 3rd order harmonic distortion - that's why manufacturers employ negative feedback to reduce it. Apparently excess use of negative feedback has a negative influence on sound. From my understanding, a SET 300B working in class A requires little if any negative feedback because it exhibits virtually no 3rd order harmonic distortion when working in it's comfort zone. Is this why SET exhibits an almost liquid midband? Some would argue this is at the expense of the bass and treble extremes - throwing the midband to the fore to appreciative listeners. On the other hand many British studio type loudspeakers of the 70's and 80's exhibited the traditional BBC mid band presence dip. Despite this so called dip, speakers such as the BBC LS 3/5a and the Spendor BC1 were reknown for their ability to project a palpable midband. The one common theme between both SET amps and BBC style speaker designs is the very low 3rd harmonic distortion specification in the very important midband region.
  8. My first stereo wasn't actually a stereo. It was a Pye portable record player with a detachable speaker and a ceramic cartridge with a saphire needle which I had to change every 40 to 50 albums. I was about 13 at the time (early 70's). To increase the bass and 'presence' I placed the speaker under the bed when I was listening to Elvis or America.
  9. Once you have a 'proper' phono preamp in situ with appropriate equalisation you should notice a big change. I reckon you should complete the phono stage first before you start fine tuning. Then so called problems you have now may vanish! Good luck. Lets us know how you get on.
  10. If space is a real issue, why not a pair of Heresy's? I think you need to wire them in series? which means the combined speaker impedance as seen by the centre channel amplifier is doubled. I can't remember which way it works. Perhaps a more informed forum member can clarify. I have read on this forum that at least one other forum member uses two Heresy's as centre channel speakers combined with Klipschorn mains.
  11. ---------------- On 7/7/2004 9:52:22 AM Erik Mandaville wrote: Hi, Edwin: I just spent 45 mins. writing a response to your interest in SET and other types of amplifiers, and hit 'submit.' The computer had some sort of electronic cough, and then I got an error message. My post vanished! Anyway. I also have speakers similar to your Loth X. Mine are Lowther PM2As in rear-laoded horns. The essential part of my message was to encourage you to have fun with this, and listen to both types of amps if you are able. The search is the fun part, and there is no reason to lock yourself into either an SET or PP prison. I enjoy both types of amps in my system, but use them for different kinds of music. I also recently built 1.5 watt amps for two forum members, and was amazed at how powerful that small amount of power sounded with our Klipschorns. It just depends on what you like...... Have fun! Erik ---------------- Thanks Eric. Sorry I didn't respond earlier. I've been having major problems getting on line and accessing certain threads. Just to clarify, I don't own any Loth-X speakers. But I have auditioned them when I decided to go horn...if you know what I mean. In fact considering Loth-X Polaris was the major factor in my choosing to go Klipschorn. The Loth-X was....NICE! But only suitable for small rooms. The Klipschorn did everything the Loth-X Polaris could do but louder, with similar dynamics and with better bass response. When you take pricing into consideration, the Klipschorn won hands down. And you're right. Owning Klipsch speakers, particularly the Heritage line, gives us the opportunity to consider any amplifier based on sound quality alone, not "...it sounds nice, but does it have enough power to drive my speakers?"
  12. ---------------- On 7/9/2004 7:51:30 PM tpg wrote: Hey... just a thought... Can anyone point me in the right direction to lose some of this hum and small amount of buzz when there is no record on the table? Thanks ---------------- Check your output lead from the turntable. There should be a small earthing wire as well as the phono connectors. Try connecting or disconnecting as the case may be to reduce the hum. It sounds like you have an earth loop or something. The buzz may indicate a lack of gain in your phono preamp - you are using one? Or it still could be some mains hash coming through. When you play a record, most of the background noise vanishes because you can't hear it above the music.
  13. I can only say that I have listened exclusively to the Klipsch Heresy, La Scala and Klipschorn in ascending scale of preference. I like the Heresy because it's lightning fast and frankly blows many competing speakers out of the water for dynamics and musicality. A great introduction to the Heritage line. It's probably suited to smaller rooms though or for surrounds when matched with the other bigger Heritage speakers. The La Scala impressed me with a bigger sound than that of the Heresy. It's probably the best affordable loudspeaker I've ever heard and second only to the Klipschorn. The Klipschorn is the king of affordable loudspeakers. It embodies all the musical attributes of the wonderful La Scala/Belle and introduces a truly symphonic bass capability. The Klipschorn transcends the horn/cone/electrostatic/other transducer argument. It's just a great loudspeaker.
  14. I think it's a great idea to consider demonstrating the Heritage line to forum members and possibily prospective buyers. I've discussed that very possibility with my local Klipsch contact. He was very keen to get somebody to do this in my state. There is a 'however' though... Home demonstrating hi-fi to unknown persons (prospective buyers) is fraught with danger. We've all done it and most people have got away with it. Some people haven't. The result could be heartbreaking and a financial disaster. Regular demonstration and sale of hi-fi equipment is best conducted from a premises independant from the home. In saying that, many succesful hi-fi dealers have started their businesses from home, and have progressed to shop fronts. Properly administered, with careful referrals and a good insurance policy, an informal demonstration and listening forum may work. Many hi-fi dealers would negotiate a small commission in our favour should we refer a genuine buyer. In taking up the original Heritage Audition Suggestion, in the spirit it was suggested, I think it would be a valuable tool for forum members to promote their passion. I don't think this facility should be restricted to the United States. I'm sure other forum members based in other countries would be willing to participate. Lastly, Klipsch Inc would need to throw their informal support in to give some credibility to the exercise - particularly with the continued availability of the Heritage line. I'm sure, however, that the Company would also counsel caution. They wouldn't want to be seen to encourage unwise/unsafe practises on behalf of forum members.

The only way I can work things out is read what you guys are arguing (reasoning?) about. I'm starting to pick up some of the arguments, but at the moment I can only rely on what I hear, and I've been impressed with SET, despite what some other have been saying. Is it magic? I don't know, but it sure sounds okay.
  17. ....the Audio Space AS-300B has remote control as well.
  18. Okay, I had my fun! I just finished watching the whole matrix trilogy - the three movies one after the other in one sitting! It was awesome. You don't realise how much of the story line you miss when there's a big break between viewing the individual releases.
  19. The Audio Space AS300B has just become available in Australia. About $3,800 in $A or only a few hundred dollars more than a Nain Nait 5. Chinese made. 8 watts SET per channel. Two pairs of RCA inputs, one set rear and one pair at the front switchable between integrated operation or power amp operation. Is this the start of the SET revolution vis a vis affordable 300B SET in Australia? I wonder what the entry level for SET is in the U.S.?
  20. I tried to fire up Neo about the Jolida but it backfired and I was shot down under in flames!

I just checked the Jolida site and you have a Jolida JD100a which I think is the top of the range! Lucky Neo. I saw the 100 on your system profile and by virtue of the fact that I'm down under (something) I had only heard of, not seen the 102. Did you own any other Jolida's before the JD100? What made you buy that amp over others? It looks on the Jolida website to be well engineered. Is this the case?

The former owner was fastidious and a detail freak so I'm told. The reason he sold was he was moving to a smaller home. Also this guy was running Audio Note monoblocs with the Klipschorns - which are still for sale. I'm going to look at them next week but I might not be able to afford them.

I put my peanut butter on the inside part for sure, but before I bite into it, I turn the bread over so the my tongue can better apreciate the taste. Also if you don't turn the bread over, the peanut butter sticks the bread to the top of your mouth - then you have to get an implement to scrape it off.
