  1. Double J I felt the same way-giving new life to a speaker and a good home. Ditto on the cops scene,I think Klipsch needs to do a more thorough background check before selling a pair of our preferred brand. JK you hate to see someone having troubles and then having to sell off all their gear, I cant imagine how bad that would make me feel. Tom P.S. DoubleJ I sent you a PM
  2. Hey Double J-I wonder If I could hire his maid I had to carry them by myself around all the piles of "stuff" The guy was telling me about how good the corns sound was so I told him I had owned a pair for many years and was very familar with them, and he kept on telling me about the corns,2 more times i said I was a longtime corns owner, but he kept on telling me how good the sound was so I just gave up! The funny thing is he was knew alot about Klipsch speakers He also claimed they were never driven very loud but when his daughter held the door open for me,she said"You wouldnt believe how loud those can get" I think I was hellbent on buying them before I left my house,oh well they sound good now. Edit: As soon as i get a digital camera I will take pics of my setup,I also redid my walnut 83s- they were in very good shape to begin with and the end results were excellent. Tom
  3. Now my 86 corns are finished with risers modeled after my 83s After I installed all the speakers and Xovers I was thinking about what iceman(frzn) said in respect to the lack of dampening inside the CW2s. I started knocking on cabinets to hear the thud sound and the difference between the 83s and 86s when I noticed one of the 86s tweeter and mids was cutting in and out.Arrgggg. So I checked the all the wires from the Xover to the speakers and noticed if I move the wire right at the tweeter + and - leads it would short open. As I monkeyed with the + and - leads I must have broke one of the small wires going to the + or - tabs. 3 days later I had the new replacements, since the tweeter diaphrams were cheap I replaced both of them. OK so I should be all set right? NOPE I put all the new parts in and gave the speaker a couple of good thumps on the top of the speaker,HMMMM same thing a open on the tweeter and mid.ARRRRGGGGG Now with the Xovers out of the box I noticed that it had some loose solder connections.I could slide the wires through the solder bead. I removed the old solder and now thought how am i going to solder this and not have a big glob of solder at the point of connection. Much to my surprise I was able to make it look as good as the others with no globs of solder. Thumple did I allready thank you HHHHHHMMMMM JK TOM And yes they are WORKING now!!!!!!!!
  4. The Corns looked like any band speakers that had been on tour for several years I cant understand how anyone could treat their gear in such a destructive manner! Picture if you will, driving down a class5 road at 50mph and then pushing them off the tailgate. Not a very pleasant thought!! They were painted with black satin but were oiled oak under the paint. I used every bit of the small tube of wood putty repairing all the corners and sides. I finished the first one with decent results, but apon sanding the second speaker I was bummed out to find 2 LARGE cigarrette burns on the top of the speaker (torpedo shape not circles) Aarrgg!! I had to chip out the oak veneer and fill it with woodputty and then try to get the stain to take, which is not an easy task to do. I am satisfied with them now but reveneering would have been easier. So all I can say now is buyer beware! Its funny how my first instinct should have been run away as fast as possible,But that greedy bassturd in the back of my mind said"His misfortune is going to be my gain and you can fix these no problem" IB Slammin bought the K-horns and knows how bad the corns looked in person, but he probably wouldnt recognize these now. Hopefully his K-horns are up and running now. Tom
  5. Ya know (MN)on their replacement diaphram instructions sheet Michael it doesnt say anything about using a 1khz tone. The squawker(] K57-K has 2 location pins on the magnet stucture, then there is a gasket with 6 holes 2 are for the location pins and 4 holes are for the screws for the horn flange and of course the large center hole is for the coil/diaphram assembly. The coil/diaphram assembly sits on top of the gasket and under the horn flange. the C/D also has 6 holes in it again 2 for the location pins and 4 for the horn flange screws. So it appears that as long as the C/D assembly is lined up with the location pins it,like you say it just drops in. The tweeter diaphram assembly is the same "drop in"style with attention paid to keeping the same angle on the +and- leads (K-79-K tweeter with the K-72-K replacement diaphram) I believe there are 6 holes in the tweeter C/D. 3 of which you wont use. One other item is to check for debris in the magnetic gap,If there is any debris,Klipsch says to use masking tape to clean it out. So unless one of the guys/gurus that work on these suggests it(1khz tone)Im going to assume its not required. Also Hardhead just kidding around. Thumplestiltskin I owe you a long overdue Thank You! for the heads up on the "klitsch" cornwalls in Richfeild, MN. I didnt pay the $800 the guy asking, but I still probably paid too much.
  6. ell I kne I ould make at least one typo. I ill try to spell check all the ords in my next post/reply. Hey ait a minute,I think im having a problem ith my keyboard it doesnt seem to type the letter Thanks for bringing this problem to my attention. Tom
  7. Hello to all! Just to let you all know there are many replacement diaphram kits available from Klipsch. These are the horn #s. This info was taken from their diaphram replacement instructions sheet. Squaker:K-53-K K-58-K K-61-K K-57-K K-59-K K-62-K K-52-K K-52H-K Tweeter:K-71-H K-74-K K-79-K K-82-K K-72-K K-75-K K-80-K K-83-K K-72-K K-76-K K-81-K I ordered 2 replacement diaphrams for the K-79-Ks tweeters and one set for the K-57-Ks and it only took 3 days to be delivered. For two tweeter diaphrams it was $35.90 and one K-57-K(K-53-K kit)mid was $37.26 very reasonable I thought! Installation is very easy to do! I dont really have any before and after comparisons to give you (cornwall 2s)but having owned a pair of 83 corns for 20+ years I must say that these sound just as good if not better! I love the improved extension of the tweeters and they match very well with my 83s Tom
  8. Well Ken high SPLs are definetely a younger mans game, I used to allways dial it up real loud in my teens and early twenties. Well when were old and grey we should be able to remove the mid flares and fashion them into a low cost hearing aid-----"Im sorry Ken I couldnt hear you, could you please speak into the horn this time" Just break em in slowly (your neighbors) or try to get some incriminating photos for the purpose of blackmailing. Why not try talking to them, ask them if its too loud, a little PR may go a long way. And there is allways the last resort of turning it down. Keep the peace. Tomski
  9. Congrats Joe! Ive got a H/K 680i im using with 4 Cornwalls and the sound is awesome! The low end output is phenominal. Those old H/K recievers are a great match for all things Klipsch!! Here is a site that has some info on the x30 series. http://crystia.accessmn.com/hkbooks/hkbooks.html Enjoy that classic H/K sound Tomski
  10. I think you might have had a blackout? Tomski
  11. Those look pretty darn nice!! I bet they will sound great dialed up on any driveway You should be able to outdo the neighbors mower/weedwhip Tomski
  12. When I was 16 I bought a 45wpc H/K I cant for the life of me remember what model # it was? It had the grey nubs on the knobs At that same time I also bought the JVC QLF6 TT and a pair of DLK/3s I still have the JVC and the DLKs My parents were disappointed in my purchase,They wanted me to buy a car instead My DLKs were around the typical 88db/1watt so when I went to Cornwalls in 83 their sound outputs were night and day different. I remember my first song on the corns was "Do you feel like we do" And yes I did I will allways remember that day Tomski
  13. Im sorry to hear that Dodger That doesnt sound like any fun Tomski
  14. $700 for a pair sounds like a nice score!! Whats the year and model # ? Besides the KG-4 sounds like the name for a basketball shoe JK Try em you will like em! Tomski
  15. Daddy Dee-Do a google search for "Transmission Line Speakers" Its very interesting! Tomski
  16. I use razerwire powercord for a sharper sound. My speaker wire had pins I think this gave me a real pinpiont sound Tomski
  17. If Courtney was here, there wouldnt be any white stuff left! How selfish? JK Tomski
  18. Here in the southern suburbs of Minneapolis we have barely a trace. One thing I do more times than I should is kickin out the a$$ end of my truck and see how long you can control it. I used to have a 89F150 with the six cylinder,I loved the way I could control my slides with that truck on snow Im in my low 40s and whenever there is enough snow and lack of traffic,I still find myself puttin it sideways and seeing how long I can slide her (2000 Lariat) And it still puts a big assmile on my face!! Waiting for snow Tomski
  19. When I first started going online reviewing gear,I eventually came upon all the speaker wire sites. I made a 27pr CAT6 cable,a 2pair coax with the braiding of one twisted with the center conductor of the other. The CAT6 was a real pain ,took about 12 hours to twist I bought my AVR in 02,at that time I also bought some Monster cable for the 7.1 option,It was the preterminated style in the flat disc like package I assumed it was the standard monster 12awg,I remember looking at the jacket/tubing and it looked like there was more jacket and less copper. The ends were covered with Monsters standard red/black rubber boots and since they were new I didnt want to damage them by peeling/removing them When, after about 2 weeks of at least 50 hours reading and reveiwing I came across this site. http://www.roger-russell.com/wire/wire.htm I then peeled/removed the rubber boots and realized it was more like 16awg and cheap crimp-on ends I then went to Home Depot and made 2 10ft foot 8awg wire sets I went from 20ft 16awg to 10ft 8awg and with short y crimp on ends I really want to believe in high end wire/power cables,I have never found any PROOF that they are better though. Since they are shorter and much thicker I think thats why Im at least as happy with the sound as with any of my Monstercable purchases Tomski
  20. Maybe you can get a good deal here Stay with what makes music to your ears! Good luck in your outcome. Tomski
  21. Sorry for the rant, but is it less than 70F down here in So. Florida and I have to wear a sweater when I go outside! You have sweaters in Florida? Its 11 outside right now,You lucky bass turd! Tomski
  22. Erukian What is the wattage rating of the CA-800?
  23. Does Paully want a cracker? JK Tomski I do think more power would give him better sound/dynamics
  24. Is the 340 20 watts per ch? Id look for a used larger wattage HK Of course I like the i series,or the used NADs,Rotel Tomski
  25. I think the 12awg wire jacket for the in-house from HD reacted with the copper,Not sure if the outdoor is the same. Right now,Im using 8awg THHN for speaker wire. I would rate this setup as good as any Monster wire Ive had in the last 20 years,Im going to switch back after a few more months and see what my perceptions are. 12awg low volt/outdoor will work fine for speaker wire! There are also other inexpensive 12awg speaker wires with clear tubing that wont turn green and will give you more bling than the 12awg black lv zip cord not sold at HD. Gauge matters most.12awg is plenty for most runs Im just experimenting a little If you dont like it you can allways go the high buck route. Tomski
