  1. Thanks for the input MrMcgoo and the correct terms. Just to be clear are you thinking that 3 or 4 Fortes would be the best way to go in the rear depending if I stick with 6.1 or can squeeze a 7th in and work toward eliminating the Academies all together? Surely given unlimited $$ and unlimited availability I would want to strive for the front three to all be the same, right?
  2. FRZN, not sure if I have the room for 7.1. That was my original plan but as the room went from cement walls to studs/drywall/carpet/baseboard it shrunk a lot. I also lost a row of seating as my screens AR went from 1.78 to 2.35 (needed to move the front, now only row back about 2 feet). I am so happy I went with the wider screen but that pushed back my seating a bit. I now have a cozy room for 4 with HT seats over a 6 or 8 stadium seat set up I had planned. At any rate I would love to have Khorns, but think that my room with constantly be in flux as I find equipment close to home and wear down the wifey on the need for bigger/better speakers. Those Khorns on ebay would have been great if they worked out due to friends in Toronto and pricebut I guess it was not meant to be. Someday I will have the holy grail of Klipsch speakers but for now I think I need to enjoy what I have as I continue to look for the right combination. The room has one odd corner where the basement steps come into play (Left Rear when viewing a movie) which makes the back wall not perfectly straight. I also have a set of double French doors on the left wall so RS/LS are not able to be exactly on the sides of the listener. Currently the Academies are on temp stands up high to the side of and rear a bit while the center rear is dead center. I think if I had two in the rear then they would only be about 5 feet apart. If I stick with the Academies for RS/LS then I think I can them suspended from the ceiling with aircraft wire to free up some floor space. If I keep trading up in size that might be hard with Fortes. At any rate it sounds great now, but I keep thinking well maybe just this last change I really need to get some pix of my current set up and room lay out posted so you all can give me your opinions on things. I really appreciate all of the great advice and ideas I have received here. You guys are the best. My finished room is noting like I originally planned but is has been a fun journey solving all the puzzles and conversing with the forum members back and forth. Thanks a ton everyone!
  3. Construction/painting/finish work is coming to an end and my chairs are on order. Recently I have really been enjoying several movies on my new set up. However I have been playing around with different speaker configurations. Moving from Chorus/Academy/Chorus up front with Forte/Academy/Forte in the rear to C/F/C up front and A/F/A in the rear (thanks for that idea Olorin! it is phenomenal). I really like the Forte as a center over the Academy in the front and I dont notice any difference as far as the RS and LS are concerned after moving form Forte down to Academies. I do notice an improvement in the rear center when using the Forte it is more prominent. Not to the point it is out of place or overpowering, but rather I hear it when before I really did not. In all fairness to the original set up it was just calibrated by ear with test tones and the newer set up was done with a SPL meter. So on with the question. Do any of you know or have feelings that as we see more DVDs with dedicated 6.1 and or 7.1 tracks think the center rear (or what ever the proper term is if you have two) will be like the real center up front? That is do you think it will be the speaker that really makes the difference? I know my perfect scenario would be to have 6 choruses throughout the room, but that probably is not going to happen do to size, cost and availability. I would however like to get 3 chori up front eventually. If that was to happen would it be appropriate to put the remaining chorus in the rear center and move the forte to RS/LS duty or am I reaching the point of diminishing returns and should just stick with the Academies? Side note: Who has a single or pair of WO chorus they want to sell so I can get that front array all the same? Come on I know you Khorn/Cornwall/LS types got em squirreled away in your basement just incase you need them. If you were to help me out there I could let my Academies go to the Chorus/Forte/Quartet members that cant get these big pigs under or above their TVs. 2nd side note: I am really digging the 6.1 set up no matter what speaker configuration I end up with. Great for speakers as they typically come in sets of two and great for snagging old gear as the amps come in twochannels that is. I am using a Sunfire TGIV driven by three older Carver 2 channel amps each with 240 WPC. No extra single speakers to feel neglected and unloved - no unused amp channels. A win for everybody
  4. I have asked them 3 times over 5 days for the shipping to my zip as their shipping calculator is not working. Not a single message back. Note that they tell you they tack on shipping charges and that they are heavy. I am betting they make quite a profit on shipping so I have not bid. I would like to have WO to match my others...but guess it will have to wait. If somebody here gets em, please let me know the shipping.
  5. Ahhh, the highs and lows of speaker lust. I was so fired up about this my mind was going 100 mile an hour thinking of the reorg of room and other things. Currently they are over 1700too rich for my blood. A long way away from my house to travel and needing a few hundred for the LS top or other parts puts my in the neighborhood of 2K and I eventually need to make the right cabinet for WAF. Khorns can be had from time to time in the 2500 range and no need to track down parts and make things. I had a mental price tag around 1500. So I did not even get the chance to see the sniping software in action. Still they do look to be more or less new. Hope they go to a forum member. Thanks for all the advice on what I would need and the sanity check on my other line up of speakers. So anyone out there in the Baltimore area have a pair for 2K or so? Does not hurt to ask, right?
  6. Going from memory here, but when I bought my Fortes new I think the Fortes were 1300 and the Chorus were 1800. I bought a very nice pair of Chorus in Walnut last December for 700 or 750 I think. They have no scratches, dings or chips. There is a little laytex paint splatter on them most came right off some still need a little attention. Shipping is the big pain. They are heavy and bulky. If you can get them locally and you want them I wold say anying under 800 is someting to consider depending on how bad the scratches are and how bad you want them. Good luck, let us know how you make out.
  7. Dont know why this did not occur to me earlier. Heresies are a good match with the khorns in the high/mids arent they? So If I was to have Khorn/Heresy/Khorn up front and Heresy/Heresy/Heresy in the back I should be all set with two Academies and a pair of beautiful Chorus to sell. Cant get rid of my Forte as I am the original owner and am very attached to themthinking of being buried with them. Also if I was to have a shorter heresy center in the front as opposed to my current tall line up I should be able to build some sort of stage/enclosure for the heresy and sub to make it more theater like. Currently my C/F/C are right under my screen.
  8. Food for thought or discussion - form Klipsch web site: Forte II - You have selected a Klipsch Classic product. The three-way Heritage Series Forte II was first introduced in 1989 and . So why do I see some posts that Chorus/Forte/Quartet are not really heritage speakers? Surely I am missing something here. My dealer sold me my Forte IIs in the early 90s and had them in the same listening room as LaScalas. Told me that they were all in the same family with different sizes and prices to meet most needs/budgets. I was also told that if I stayed in the Heritage line I could trade up at any time and get my full purchase price in trade. Obviously they dont sound entirely the same or there would only need to be one speaker. I could almost buy it if someone was to say the KH/LS/B have different woofer setups so they are a different type of speaker. But then I see Cornwalls lumped in with the real heritage and not C/F/Q. Cornwalls have a cone and not a folded horn for the low end, right? Not trying to start a fight here, just honestly interested for my own knowledge.
  9. Oh FRZN you are killing me now...making it too easy for me to pull the trigger. My wife is going to kill me then kill you. Hearing so many of the perfectionists rip on the pseudo-heritage (Chorus/Forte/Quartet) vs. The Real Heritage (KH/LS/Belle/Corn) I thought maybe I might not be as happy with a KH pseudo mix as I currently am. Ok rip is the wrong term but there seems to be some underlying tone that I pick up that Chorus/Forte/Quartet are not really heritage speakers. I love the sound of them all and the Klipsch web site terms all discontinued models as Classic as far as I can tell, but they surely say the C/F/Q were in the heritage line and that is how my Forte IIs were sold to me back in the 90s. At any rate that is for another thread so I can gain a little more education from all the great and helpful people around here. I recently changed my set up from Chorus/Academy/Chorus front with Forte/Academy/Forte back *TO* Chorus/Forte/Chorus front with Academy/Forte/Academy and am so happy I did. I really like the front as it is seamless. I also have a set of Heresy and Heresy II. Surely I have enough to find something that will get by should I score the Khorns. Wish me luck!
  10. FRZN, thanks for the green light any thoughts on my room size seeing as you have two pair? I know they say 10 foot ceilings. My corners have plenty of walls in each direction. Guess the next problem will be that my Chorus/Academy/Forte probably won't be the right mix in the center/back so I have to now start looking for LS, Belle, Corns. This hobby is killing my wife's ability to be understanding. I do have Heresies. I imagine I could run KH/Heresy/KH up front and Chorus/Heresy/Chorus in the back...surely that would hold me over, no? Man I am getting fired up about this for some reason. My Chorus are even walnut! Anyone else have thoughts on my room? Am I getting in over my head? EDIT: sorry FRZN did guess I only read the "go for it line" before I replied. All excited on this end.
  11. I have always wanted Khorns, but never had the space...still don't think I have the ideal space at 13X16 with an 8 foot ceiling am I setting myself up for disappointment if I were to get these? I have a friend in Toronto willing to get/store them for me till I can make a trip up AND my parents live in Detroit so not an impossible task to get them from there either. I know the price is right, but logistically I don't want to impose on others and output the cash if I am only going to be happier with Chorus and Forte. Any rough idea on how much to buy the parts for the top and what would be involved with the wood work? I am fairly handy, but by no means a cabinet maker. Thanks for any and all advice, Rich FRZ, let me know if you are gooing to bid...if you are I will NOT.
  12. Yes it is DTS on U2 can not remember off hand on The Who. Up to this point I have not been too much into concert DVDs so I wont be much help here. I did see a Clapton one a while back, but dont remember the name it was very good the U2 is better. Other then Sarah Mc I am not a big fan of those other bands, so not having seen I can not compare. I have seen REMs Perfect Square (which I loved) and U2 is better, REM is about the same as The Who one I mentioned. Other ones I have seen include Neil Young Rust Never Sleepshardly a fair comparison as U2/REM/Who are all so much newer. NYs is a fun watch, but noting to note in the audio/video department. Sorry I cant help you out more to give you a comparison, but if you like U2 at all I cant imagine you would be disappointed.
  13. Just received and watched U2s 2001 concert from Slane Castle. I have never seen a concert DVD that has such amazing sound AND video. Very, very well done. My wife and I were blown away. I also got The Who Live at Albert Hall. That is pretty darn good too. Very nice video and the sound is excellent. If you have any interest in either of these bands I highly recommend. On the down side Rolling Stones Four Flicks is nauseating to watch. The sound is nice and the video clarity is great, but the editing and cutting back and forth is so jumpy that is it almost unwatchable on the big screen. Only viewed two of the four discs so I am hoping that the other two are a little better. Anyone else care to share some of the better concert DVDs that they have viewed recently? Not that big of a fan of these on my 36 inch TV, but since putting up a projector/screen I am hooked - an excellent way to combine both music and visual stimulation.
  14. Two things As to the back wall maybe I just got lucky with my color choice. I painted the ceiling and front wall (screen wall) flat black. The other three walls I did with a sand wash paint (has a sand paper texture in it) in a very dark red. This gives the wall that old time movie house feel to me. Now it is not black, but very very dark redso not much light bouncing around. As for the price of Stewart. I really had no problem with the price when you factor in all the other things you have in a HT and the fact that you will be looking at the screen every time you watch anything. But I also did not want to spend money just for the sake of spending it. Dont get me wrong Stewart makes great screens, but at 3-4X the cost I figured I could get by with the Carada and get by I am!
  15. Hardly a love song, but all throughout the summer (1987) when my wife and I first started dating we were listening to Alex Chilton by the Replacements. Every time we hear it now we both reach for the dial to turn it up. I am sure she would agree it is our song. Not really sure why this song stays with me but I had a job that I absolutely hated for a while. On the drive to work for several days/weeks in a row I must have been listening to Semi Charmed Life by 3rd eye blind. Now, any time I hear that song I am immediately taken back to the same spot in my commute. I can see a farm on my left and a narrow two lane road leading to my miserable place of employment. I guess that song come up on the CD about the same time in my commute every day. I started a thread a little while back about playing songs on new equipment: songs I can vividly remember everything in the sound room where listened to the first pair of Klipsch speakers I boughtI do miss the KG4s. I cant think of any others off of the top of my head, but I tell you it happens all the time that I hear a song and am instantly transported back to a particular time and place in my life. Some are broader like a season or period in my life; others are very specific with a time, place and vision some times even a smell. Great thread keep it going!
  16. I totally agree with you on the Carada screen. I was taking a spare no expense approach on my HT as I only wanted to do it once and have waited over 15 years to do it. I had all but ordered a screen form Stewart, but thought a lot of the comments on the Carada website made sense. I got samples from both Carada and Stewart and just did not see 3X the differencenot sure I really saw any difference. I also have a Panasonic 700 and based on reading about LCDs I thought I would need a gray screen. But I also ended up going the brilliant white route on the Carada. My screen has been up for about a month now and have watched a lot movies including several with lots of dark scenes. Either I dont have a very tough to please eye or Panasonic and Carada have made blacks a non-issue in my HT. David at Carada had several emails back and forth with me about aspect ratio, size, material and the like. Very friendly, very knowledgeable, very professional and the best company I have dealt with as far as customer service goes in a long time. I dont have any connection with Carada at alljust a happy customer like Thoriated_Tiger
  17. CP1 I am with you on the Led Zep, but it is a different song. One of the early test songs for just about every set of speakers is When the Levy Breaks.
  18. Zappa's A/OS album along with Joes Garage are high on my list...this is the central scrutinizer...
  19. Ever since I was a kid if I got a new piece of stereo equipment or anything that was capable of playing music I had to think of just the right song or album to be the first piece of music played on my new equipment. At 13 or so I tormented myself trying to decide between sympathy for the devil or gimmie shelter: Which should have the honor of first song on my new stereo in *MY* bedroom? No more listening to that console looking piece of furniture my parents had discarded to the basement! At 17 the first song played on the tape deck of my fist car just HAD to be something by the Sex Pistols. Around 21 I got my first CD player and it was back to the Stones and my roots to kick off this New Era of music. A nice mix of old music with new technology. My first pair of Klipsch speakers were KG4s. I had been shopping at a used record store in Ann Arbor Michigan and picked up a few discs. I stopped into The Stereo Shop and the sales man threw one of my newly acquired CDs in. Echo and the Bunnymens Lips Like Sugar poured out of them like sonic gold. I bought the KG4s that day. My wife and I comment on that one day every single time we hear any Echo song - it is as if it happened yesterday. The KG4 were sold to finance a pair of Forte IIsI still have the CD used price tag on it and all. I think this has continued with every car, portable CD player, MP3 Player, set of speakersyou get the idea. There just has to be the right song to launch the new toy Just last week as I was hooking up my new Pre/Pro in my newly finished home theater my head is spinning trying to decide what should be the first movie out of the DVD player and the first tune out of the Audiotron now that I had 300+ of my CDs on one hard drive for easy access. I asked my wife what she thought and she looked at me like I was crazy. Just throw anything in and see if it works she said. No way, it HAS to be just the right one. I started to think about how I have always done this and even marveled that I could remember the songs/groups that were the right tune for the right gadget. With less then 9 months before I will be 40 I guess the kid in me never quite grows up. So how about it? Do you guys/gals do this too? If so what are some of the benchmark tunes?
  20. I think you are on the right track getting a different center and maybe 3 Heresys across the back. If you want to sell the C-IIs give me a yell. I have two pair of Heresys ...maybe we can work something out.
  21. Base price in fabric was 1395. Leather started at 1595. I liked the #2 leather, which was a 250 option per seat. That put me around 1850 per seat. The dealer just started carrying them and said he was motivated to get some in houses so we settled on 1400 per seat for 4 or 5 depending on how my measurements went and no delivery or set up charge. That is about 25% off plus free delivery, so did not think it was too bad of a deal. However I could not find out any sort of street price by checking around on the web. I did find many positive reviews and comments on the seats. After trying at least 5 different brands of seats I think it is like a lot of things - you get what you pay for. I don't understand why Berkline seats are so expensive. They felt cheap to me. Probably like a lot of things everyone has their own thoughts and opionions. Do you know what your dad paid for his Primere's? Rich
  22. Anybody out there have any experience with Premiere MovieLoungers and want to share what you like/dislike? Check them out here: http://www.premierehts.com/sublevel.cfm?template=lounger⊂=loungers I was really impressed with the build quality, fabric selection, comfort and overall look of many of the chairs. I am looking for a low back and narrower seat. I found the Grand to be just was I was looking for. The local dealer also had Lane products, Berkline, as well as a few others. Actually a great selection of brands and styles. So I felt like I was able to try many out. They are a rather expensive investment once you start looking at 4 or more seats, so wanted to see if there was anyone out there that actually has them and what you think. Thanks, Rich
  23. I am not totally familiar with the Sunfire UR, but I just got a Sunfire Theater Grand IV. I think the UR is like the TGIV with integrated amps. FWIW I love my TGIV. If you want to see how the price is go to audiogon and check out this item: http://cls.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/cls.pl?homeproc&1110998666 Drop the seller Bryan an email and tell him that Rich (the guy who just bought the new TGIV) sent ya. See what he can do on price, if anything. That might give you an idea if you are getting a good deal locally. Also if you end up doing business with Bryan you will not be disappointed. He went above and beyond to make my transaction for the Sunfire and a Denon 3910 a great one. I have no connection or interest in this guy...just a happy customer. Good luck, Rich
  24. Hey can you two give me a line on the coaster products. I have been searching for "coaster series" "coaster chairs" "coaster seats" and "coaster theater" not having any luck...but finding lots of hits on roller coasters. Thanks, Rich
