  1. Snookboy: Welcome to my world. I too have a pair of 16 year old ForteIIs and embarked upon the process of upgrading a two channel system to a 5.1 system with my old speakers as the foundation. Only in mid November I started researching what to match them with. I spent a month reading many threads about how best to accomplish that. First, the search function will help you obtain numerous old threads regading the subject. In an effort to have speakers with a timbre match, you'll wind up wanting an Academy Center channel speaker. Best match for your Forte's as mains. I imagine others will work also, but if you're aiming for the best match, an Academy. You'll have to be patient at look to get one on ebay, Audiogon, or from someone in this forum. For surrounds (and maybe Rears) the timbre match is not as critical, but suggestions include: more Forte's, and Chorus are the first choice. I decided to save a little money here and am using a pair of KG1.5. In my opinion fantastic little (inexpensive speakers). Someday, I'll upgrade those or move the Forte's to the surrounds. The Denon 3805 will drive all these wonderfully. I looked very closely at exactly that model, but wound up with a Harman Kardon AVR 7000. Good luck.
  2. you guys give ol' ooteedee a break. he'll probably learn more from this little experiment than about 90% of us. yeah, it'll costs a few bucks, but half the fun is in the building, right.
  3. rplace: the academy that I wound up buying off of ebay is walnut oiled. I understand that is different than Oak Oiled, correct? Because if the same, I'd trade for a black one. No difference to me. My Forte's are black anyway. just a thought. Might not be worth all the shipping and jeopardy, but if one of ya'll really wanted a walnut one, I'll trade.
  4. Yeah Peter, Finding Nemo was part of the entertainment saturday. Have you seen the THX start that where the little squirrel is trying to hide his nut and it winds up putting a big crack in the glacier? Eventually the cracked glacier falls on the squirrel. Hole scene provides bass. Seems to be the THX presentation for the kids movies.
  5. Early Christmas for sure. My HT is about there. In the last 3 days I received my new Academy Center, HK AVR 7000, HK DVD31 and an SVS 20-39 PC Plus. I spent two straight days watching movies and listening to Christmas music with my kids. It's quite an experience after years of two channel. Have any of ya'll ever experience the bass while watching "Ice Age" a kids movie. WOW. Anyway, I want to thank all of you on this forum who have chimed in on advice. I truly believe that I've got one hell of a system and the Academy and the subwoofer are part of it primarily because of the advise on this forum. I appreciate all of your input. Happy Holidays to all of you and yours,
  6. very interesting thread. thanks to all for the education.
  7. Orange Peel, your system has some real WOW power to it. Very impressive. I think the sepia pics are a great way to show off the audio gear. Love it!!
  8. Man, a rockin' Raul Maulo (solo albumn by the lead singer for the Mavericks) song just came on the best Austin Texas radio station while I was re-reading this thread. I cranked the volume into my forte IIs. Pull the trigger, you won't be sorry.
  9. IMO the english language doesn't provide us with the words to describe some of the subtle difference between many speakers. Also, there is really no substitute for having your own ears hear your speakers against a pair of Fortes. I've got a pair and had them for about 15 years. I think there great speakers. I think they do a great job of providing a broad range of audio whether playing at high volume or low volume. When I listen to other speakers I tend to believe what I am hearing is almost to crisp. The forte's just sing. One way to hear a pair would be to be patient and see if someone on the forum makes you an offer to listen to theirs. I was interested in hearing a tube amp driving klipsch, and have had offers to listen by others who live in Austin, TExas. You could listen to my Forte's if Austin is in your future. Finally, realize that there's a market out there for these speakers. Buy a pair and if you want to trade up or sideways later. Somebody will buy them. There is a demand. That's one nice thing about Klipsch; the products keep their value.
  10. don't count on the fact the only the older models is what you get online. I wanted the latest hardon kardon DVD player to go with my HT receiver. I looked at HK's website, their top of the line DVD player today is a HK DVD31. Only model that will play the audio DVDs, right. I looked at their website for local retailers, Circuit City only in Austin Texas. Went to Circuit City, they only had the HK DVD22. almost the same player only it won't play the DVD-audio disks. I asked the sales guy about the HKDVD31, he said, you can only get it online right now. HK does that for about 6 months with their new models. HUH!!! surprised the hell out of me.
  11. it's all about the $$$$$$ boys and girls. realize that the conversation is only about putting an asterisk on his record. nobody is talking about even fining Bonds. I heard a decent suggestion on a radio talk show yesterday. After every game (although this was in the context of basketball), everybody pisses in a collective bucket. They test the bucket, and if an listed drugs shows up in the bucket, the team loses the game that day!!! Forces the teams police the drug issue. Not a completely ridiculous idea. Certainly it would manipulate the way teams probably just don't ask if there star outperforms while suddenly having substantially more body mass.
  12. hell, I sent the SVS folks an e-mail just today. when I mentioned this forum, they responded with embarassment (their word) as to how much favorable talk they were getting on this forum. I'm not quite sure what the thread creators point is? Is SVS somehow have a less favorable product because of their direct sale model? that's simply silly. If your going to sell a product on simple word of mouth and a website, that business model in and of itself peaks my interest.
  13. I've been building my system for the past month. Here's how my effort has started. First, I went to the local retailers that had speaker 4 or 5 times and listened to lots of speakers. I think that's the first step. Then, I've read literally hundreds of threads on the this forum. Use the search feature. It will answer many questions without recreating threads. You get lots of instant answers that way, the old threads will come up and you can read them. I have a pair of 15 year old Klipsch Forte's. I didn't hear anything that made me want to not want to incorporate the Forte's, so I've been looking to find Forte matched speakers from ebay. You may choose to go with the older Klipsch speakers or the newer or others. Only your ears can answer that. With $20K as a budget, you don't have limitations. You can have whatever you want. Don't skip listening to Heritage, Classic and Reference line of Klipsch speakers before you buy. You are asking this forum, so you probably already know that. Good luck and take your time. Unless you've previously had the opportunity to listen to these speakers, it will take you a couple months. But, with patience you can find almost any of the older speakers either from this forum, ebay, or audiogon. Good luck.
  14. man, some poor guy paid $680 for the water damaged academy. I sure hope it wasn't anybody on the forum.
  15. the specs are the same. oh, let's base the decision on the most important decision in your system on the specs. NOT. it's time to rely on your ears. sorry to be so blunt, but come on.
  16. Frzn: I agree, the new pie slice logo rocks!
  17. Now, now, let's keep it clean. Sam and Bob talk radio, usually hilarious, morning weather and traffic report.
  18. Sometimes you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.
  19. Congrats Ken. You'll love your new source of so much pride and pleasure. Good work Frzninvt. This forum is remarkable in so many ways. Truly a gift.
  20. cob1708: I don't have the knowledge to provide advice, but you've got some great equipment. Sounds like a good problem to have. I'm about to set up a system. From the threads and articles that i've read, it seems like buying on of the sound level meters and playing with your setup (speaker positioning and output out of your receiver to each speaker) is a large part of the answer. my 2 cents. good luck!
  21. Harry Connick, Jr.'s christmas albumn is good.
  22. Happy Holidays to all. Oh sorry. Happy Holidays to all you Klipsch lovin' scoundrels. Even Jamma.
