  1. Keith-How the hell did you fall into this hole? fini To add a touch of "flair" (or "flare?"), I think this forum should be moderated by Christopher Lowell, that designer with the show on The Discovery Channel.
  2. Yesterday, Clipped and Shorn came over to examine (and troubleshoot) my recent audio aquisitions: a Dual 1219 turntable, a Pioneer PL-41 turntable, and a Pioneer SX-1050 receiver. So far, the SX-1050 seems good to go. The PL-41 needs, at least, a new belt. The 1219 "works," but needs a good going through, cleaning, lubricating, etc. Both TT's need new cartridges. So, my plan is to get a service manual and an instruction manual for the Dual (reprints available on eBay, etc.), a belt for the Pioneer, and at least one cartridge, depending on how the repairs go. My questions are: Where is the best place to get new belts? What would be some choices for good cartridges for these turntables (I don't want to spend a fortune on these). C&S and I agreed, the Pioneer PL-41's looks had a certain "cool" appeal. Is anyone familiar with this model? fini
  3. HornEd-I was just there a month ago with my daughter and her fifth grade class. We only had a couple of hours to poke around...you need more like a couple of days (weeks?)! I think an exibit on PWK and his horns would be great! Need help setting it up? fini
  4. HornEd and Justin- Although you may not be able to perceive the difference, you really should replace your mugs. Neither one of you has the Reference series speakers, which is the tonal match for the mugs you currently own. Either that, or replace your speakers. I mean, really... fini
  5. Thanks, Chris for putting down in words what I know and feel. I was able to see the Steve Morse Band live in the mid 80's. The whole band was incredibly tight. Ed, you'll love Morse! fini
  6. Cleansed Corn, I did a cob job removing a few screws, some of my screws are only loose, hoping I don't louse up and lose 'em. Regarding the Pioneer TT, the platter doesn't spin. I haven't checked to see if power is getting to the motor, etc. The Dual, on the other hand, does spin, sort of, in 78 speed and 45, not 33. Removed the platter, and it seems to be a problem with the idler wheel (?), mybe gunky old lubricant. The "start/stop" lever seems to not be engaging properly-it goes past where it seems like it should stop. I'm not quite sure how to separate the TT from the wooden base, which I'd like to do so that I may read the "instructions" pasted on the inside bottom. I can see this through a drop-down panel on the front of the base. Man, you are up early! fini
  7. Well, it turned out to be a non-working 1219, which they sold to me for $5, along with a Pioneer PL-41 TT (also $5, also non-working), and a Pioneer SX-1050 Receiver ($50-works). Ther seems to be lots of info on the Dual turntable online, not so much on the Pioneer turntable (which has a pretty cool, late 60's sleek design with a solid wood base). I'll examine them more closely after my wife has gone to work, and I can safely transfer them from my truck to the Bat Cave... fini
  8. Lipton Soup, The also had a Dual 1215 (broken) and a Phillips Automatic 406 for sale. I'll bet they didn't sell. I'll keep my eyes peeled for their next estate sale. We could go together w/mdeneen. I don't know about mdeneen, but I've got a nook in my garage and you've got a few crannies at your place inwhich we could shove a bit more stuff...whaddaya say? fini
  9. Well, I went back today. Everything was still there. The AR's sounded pretty funky. From the sites that TTK suggested, seems this is common for AR's of this vintage (needing new surrounds and general TLC). They wanted $100 for the pair-I passed. Did pick up the Pioneer SX-1050 for $50, and two "project" turntables (the Dual 1219, and a Pioneer PL-41) for $5 each. It's a disease, I know, but someone has to have it (those orphans need a home...)! It won't be long before I'll be posting asking for TT repair tips... fini
  10. What would be a good price for the 1219, then? fini
  11. mdeneen- These were in Rohnert Park. I was able to sneak out of the house for a bit this morning, saving my mundane Saturday chores for the afternoon. Yup, those are the speakers I saw. They looked to be in excellent condition, but I didn't check under the hood, or take 'em for a spin. My wife would probably kill me if I brought these home (even if I told her I could sell them on eBay for___times what I paid for them). It was an estate sale, the kids getting rid of Dad's stuff for him (Dad's o.k.-just in a smaller place now, thanks for asking). Unfortunately, no tube gear (I asked). Keith-I appreciate the link! Thank you! fini
  12. I would be most honored to do so, sir! What do you know about the LST's? At what price would they be considered too low to pass up? I couldn't find much on the web. fini
  13. Would this be a step up from my JVC QL-A2? There's one at a garage sale in my neighborhood (part of a system for sale as a package, but I might be able to purchase separately). Not sure what cartridge is on it now. Any responses gratefully accepted. fini
  14. Didn't pick any of this up (yet!), but an interesting mix: 1) AR-LST speakers (asking $400/pr.) 2) Dual 1215 TT (make offer) 3) Phillips Automatic 406 TT (make offer) 4) Pioneer SX-1050 receiver, Dual 1219 TT, Fisher speakers, great condition ($200) Anyone care to comment on these deals? I might go for one of the turntables, maybe the Dual 1219 if they'd sell separately. The AR's were quite interesting, though... fini
  15. You mean you're supposed to drink the beer before crushing the can on your forehead? I learn something on this forum every day. Thanks! fini
  16. jbek-If I may ask, what was the repair shop you went to? I recently had my Cornwall tweeters worked over by A Brown Soun (no "d") in SanRafael. They did a great job realligning the magnets, though it did cost more than I had expected. fini
  17. Last night at the Olympics I saw Michelle Kwan skate to a beautiful version of "Fields of Gold." Do you know if that was Eva Cassidy's voice? Thank you for the reccomendation! fini
  18. I think most posters don't know what to do with this forum. I always thought it would be a great place to discuss room acoustics and treatments. fini Hey, how about those room acoustics and treatments, eh? (getting the ball rolling...)
  19. Keith-The sacrifices you're willing to make to help a fellow board member...kinda brings a tear to ol' fini's eye. fini edit: Could you post pictures of that $3 boot? What size is it? Is it available separately if your other deal falls apart? This message has been edited by fini on 02-20-2002 at 09:18 AM
  20. I just did a search looking for an obituary for Merle Haggard, but found nothing. Anyone have a link? Were you, by chance, thinking of Waylon Jennings? http://www.country.com/news/display/1452342.jhtml fini This message has been edited by fini on 02-19-2002 at 01:08 PM
  21. Synthfreak-You're right, I missed that. It wasn't reported on Nickelodeon, The Disney Channel, or Cartoon Network (which is what's on mostly when the tube's on-kids, ya know). "Big City" was their lullaby of choice back when they still wanted me to sing 'em to sleep. Very sorry to get this news. Indeed, Rest In Peace, Hag. fini
  22. You'll love this...: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1333801001 fini
  23. quote: ...Merle Haggard RIP... I do believe ol' Merle is still kickin' (at least he's scheduled for a gig at Konocti on May 17). Merle Watson is unfortunately with us no more (a true shame). fini
  24. Last summer I found a dead opossum in my garage. Although I haven't hooked it up to my Cornwalls yet, I'd say you made out better than I did. fini
