  1. Do ya wanna have me over with my Walkman? Sorry, just me torting again. fini OBTW, yes, type B's. -f This message has been edited by fini on 01-29-2002 at 11:23 AM
  2. Nice pics, Kelly. Your friend is fortunate to have you looking out for him/her. My Cornwall woofers ('79) do not have the shiny surrounds, either. You undoubtedly noticed in the somewhat generic description of the speaker ("MDF???"), the finish is described as "laquered cherry", which may be misleading, as they are raw birch, designer series. What I'm curious about, though, is the front edge of the plywood raw (i.e. do you see the plies)? In the photos, it looks to me like the edge is solid wood, rounded-over. Does the designer series, in raw birch, come stock with raw exposed ply edges, or are they edge banded? How about your CD-BR's, Kelly? fini

    Poll Question

Didn't see it, but I like that tune, Tea For Two. I have a friend learning it on the vibes. Do I win?
  4. In the past few months, I've found some similar vintage Sansui receivers: An 8080 DB @ the thrift store for $60, and a MINT (w/all paperwork including sales receipt) 4000 for $10 @ the flea market. These beasts make my walkman seem positively light! This can all be quite fun, if you're willing to "mess around" a bit! snowed in, fini This message has been edited by fini on 01-28-2002 at 03:41 PM
  5. "End of their career?" My God! They're still together... http://cowsill.com/cowsills/index.html Kelly, you disappoint me. And here I thought you knew everything about music... fini
  6. Mobile, Thanks, as always, for the clear-cut, no nonsense advice. Is that available on CD yet? fini P.S. I tried stopping messing around once. It just wasn't me.
  7. Andy, You're probably right. If you care to read about my purchasing experience, here's the thread:http://216.37.9.58/ubb/Forum6/HTML/000488.html Although my current set-up is, you might say, funky (Sansui 4000 receiver, JVC QL-A2 turntable, Panasonic walkman CD player, teeny whatever-was-lying-around speaker wire), they sound great! In the other room I've got the HT rig set up, of which I'm quite fond (Pioneer dvd, Yamaha cd, Denon AVR-3300 receiver, KSP-400 fronts, KSP-C6 center, KSF-S5 surrounds). One thing I notice is the Cornwalls are pretty bright (duh, they now have functioning tweeters). Of course I've read here about Cornwall tweaks, maybe I'll try some. Obviously upgrading the "front end" (and the middle, too) would be the first step. All in due time, though. fini
  8. I haven't quite figured out what albums to use to show off my Cornwalls to Clumped and Honed. I'm thinking, maybe, "Organ Favorites" (Tops L1512), "The Story of Big Ed" (Disneyland ST-1619), or "Schnappsie, The only dog in the World with a Magic Button" (Chancellor CSH 7001), or some alterednates. Biggest Regards, fini
  9. Well, the tweeters are fixed, installed in the Cornwalls and WORKING, FINALLY! I sent them off to Orange County Speaker along with the new diaphragms I had purchased from EV. After about a week, I called and they said they'd be fixed and ready to ship the next day. Whoopee! Next day, I get the good news/bad news call: The good news is that they were able to recenter the magnet and replace the diaphragm on the tweeter that I screwed with, The bad news was that the other diaphragm was defective, which they didn't detect until they had intalled it. They had no more diaphragms (on backorder for 2 months), so I had them send 'em home. O.K. $52 plus shipping, plus about $50 for the diaphragms. At least I had one good tweeter. I then contacted a local shop, A Brown Soun (http://www.abrown.com/), who could replace the diaphragms, and, by the way, could now recenter magnets! Because of their opinions of Orange County Speaker (Brown's guys weren't subtle), I decided to take both tweeters to them, and let them have a look. After a few days I got worse news: neither tweeter worked (I hadn't tested them before taking them to Brown), and both magnets were misaligned! ARGHH! Well, to these guys' credit, they were able to bring both k-77m's back to life, and for only $173 (!). That's my story. Now to figure out what wire to use... fini
  10. Buy a pair used on ebay. Listen to them until they wear out. The new ones should be there by then. fini
  11. Thanks, all. I'll be doing some reading and head scratching before I squirm around in the mud under the house with a couple of cables... fini This message has been edited by fini on 01-26-2002 at 07:09 PM
  12. You know, for the price you got these, you could be accused of elder abuse... My advice would be to go back to the rummage sale and give the folks another $250. They'll be thrilled, you will have still gotten a bargain, and, darn it, you'll just feel better. fini This message has been edited by fini on 01-26-2002 at 07:00 PM
  13. Being a dad myself, I say no, you're not being too warm and fuzzy. Those "magical" times as a family can be few and far between (for some of us), and must be cherished, and celebrated. We men tend to hide alone in our caves. "Just trying to get some peace and quiet." Well, you can have plenty of peace and quiet after the kids have left home, and your wife is at the quilt group with her pals. I just last night got the Cornwalls tempoarily set up in the living room (finally got the tweeters repaired). Its 7:10 AM here. My girls (age 10 and 13) got up before 6 to make birthday breakfast for Mom. Right now, though, they're diggin' Lyle Lovett on the Cornwalls. And they don't even care that the cd is playing on a walkman (Panasonic SL-S231C), fed into a '70's solid state receiver (Sansui 4000), into the Cornwalls via the crappiest teeny weeny speaker wires you could imagine (can't find a part number on these...). Gotta go...the kids might have a job for me... fini
  14. I have a friend who has been sore on baseball ever since the strike. Me? I can't wait until Spring training. GO GIANTS. Hope this helps. fini
  15. I knew I was taking a chance mentioning the Denon (hehe). Thanks for the tips! Looks like it's homework time. Gee, maybe when I'm done, I'll be able to supply some useful information here on the boards, not just misunderstood, wise-*** retorts. Nah. Hopefully, this project will turn out better than my horribly botched diaphragm replacement (the rest of the story to follow...). fini
  16. Oh, God, not another cable question... http://216.37.9.58/ubb/Forum9/HTML/001701.html Sincere thanks for your imput. fini
  17. O.k. Looks like we all have to leave this post so Trey and Donna can take care of some "unfinished" business... Go ahead, kids, we won't peek. fini
  18. How about this wire? http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshowdetl.cfm?&PartNumber=100-290&DID=7 Any links to anything more apropriate? fini
  19. I am considering using my Denon 3300 as a preamp, connected to a separate amp in another room with my Cornwalls. I already have run in-wall speaker wire between these two locations (mistakenly thinking the Denon had "B" speaker capabilities). My question is: would the existing speaker wire work as an interconnect between the Denon and an amp? If not (and why not?), what would be a good choice (not so much what brand, but what type of wire, i.e. coax, etc.)? Since it is a long run (~50' as the crow flies) I'm thinking bulk wire and DIY connectors. fini
  20. brend4n! How long has it been? Imagine, running into you here! I've been trying to locate you so I could invite you to my wedding... Uncle fini This message has been edited by fini on 01-23-2002 at 09:04 AM
  21. As a carpenter, the cabinet would be extremely easy to make: it's just a box. In fact, I've been considering making some new enclosures out if cherry ply. One sheet of 3/4 for the tops/bottoms/sides, and a sheet of, say, birch for the motorboards and backs. Probably more straight-forward than veneering the boxes ( with which I have no experience ). Spelling, on the other hand, is difoccult. fini
  22. You'd think Klipsch would have this kind of information recorded somewhere. There certainly is enough interest in this, so maybe someone in Hope can look through some file cabinets for us (like they don't have anything better to do...). Seems almost every aspect of the Cornwalls has a mysterious lineage: Drivers, tweeters, magnets, crossovers, how components are mounted and oriented, finishes, to name a few! Any of you pro writers up for a challenge? fini This message has been edited by fini on 01-21-2002 at 12:00 PM
  23. Snipped and Worn, Seriously, I think you're on to something. Being (a) rank (amateur), I don't know about the "technical" aspect of your proposal, but I do try to pay attention, and am learning a lot here at this forum. That said, I'm thinking the flexible 3/4" copper tubing would be easier to braid. Your friend, fini
  24. Slipped and Fallen, You have an interesting idea, but is it grounded in science? fini
  25. c'mon, mobile, you must have known what you were getting into when you registered in this horny forum... fini
