hi, ": A piece of equipment that has tone controls is not necessarily flat when the controls are at 12 o'clock anyway. So, certainly, adjust them to where they sound best. The signal runs through the controls anyway, even if they are set flat. The purist approach is not to use tone controls, no matter what (this is assuming the equipment has them). But it does seem too extreme, doesn't it, to listen to an overly bright recording and not to touch the tone controls to compensate for it. Time to sell the Wrights " No, I'll not sell the Wrights, they do too many things right, I'll either caulk the squakers or look for a vintage preamp with tone controls. It will be fun to do both and compare. Anyone got a rebuilt Dynaco preamp ? Larry

hi, I've been listening to my 1979 Cornwalls with my Wright mono 3.5s for the past couple of weeks. The Corns were updated with type B crossovers from BEC. I always thought they were a bit on the bright side and am thinking of rope caulking the squaker. Tonight I hooked up my EICO HF-81 to the Cornwalls and started to listen. Still a bit on the bright side. Turned the treble control from 12 to 11 oclock, and ..... BINGO ... sonic bliss. Solid bass, lush midrange and highs right on. Tone controls.. the audiophiles joke, more in the signal path, more caps and resistors and etc. Well let me say this little cult amp sounds just right with the treble at 11 oclock. Compared the the 2a3's in general the EICO pp EL-84's are slightly more mellow and lush. Not as exacting as the 2A3s, not as precise but in every way I can think of, they are just as enjoyable. good listening , Larry

hi, That's a great job packing. I have bought and shipped astronomy stuff in the past, optics and mounts. I pack the scope in a box and it's surrounded bubble wrap and then by 1 " styrofoam cut to fit. This box goes inside another box with 2" styrofoam lining all sides and then is completely wrapped in plastic packing tape. So far I've had no problems. Larry

hi, If my wife wasn't so p***d at me I'd buy the preamp. Compare it to my 6SN7 based AES AE-3 and keep the one that sounds better. But as things stand now I'd have to fed ex it to a drop box or get in really big trouble.

hi Crazytubepower, I have Forte's and Cornwalls, I drive the Fortes with a 80 watt tube amp and I drive the cornwalls with a 3.5 watt 2a3 SET amp. Both are good. Guess which I like better. The Corns. More lifelike, bigger soundsage, more impact and just more musical. Get a pair of Corns for around 800 dollars and see what you hear !!! If you don't like them you can sell them at no loss of dollars. But I'm betting you'll keep them. The man I bought the Cornwalls from used them in his college dorm room. Now that's a small room. He liked them so much he bought another pair and built a third pair. The speakers you mention are all great, but very high efficiency speakers let amps work in there best zone of power, the first few watts. good listening, Larry I built my first amp 49 years ago and it still works

I have Forte I's driven by a Cary SLI-80 amp and Cornwalls I's driven by the Wrights and an AES preamp. I listen to the Wrights every chance I get. I'll play a cd on the Forte's and then play the same on the Cornwalls and am astounded by the additional transparency of the music. Everything the review says is true, I've experienced the same, agree with the reviewer and can wholehaeartedly endorse these amps. good listening, Larry

hi, I understand where your coming from. I have a high current ss power amp ( soundcraftsman 230 watts/channel .. it plays for 45 seconds after you turn it off ).i hook ot up wheni want to rock me and the walls. My thoughts as per your described needs .. Lots of power and high current .. Not to expensive, unless you listen outside the " walls" a lot .. don't know how a Peach will match to anything, my AES AE-2 with 20 db of gain can really heat up the soundcraftsman .. I guess you need a tuby ss amp to mate with Khorns .. Hi all, I just purchased a pair of Wright WPA 3.5 Mono amps from a forum member, Coytee and they arrived Saturday. Coytee, btw, is a great person to deal with. We had a nice telephone conversation. That's one of the benefits of this forum that goes unpublished and certainly a plus for being a member here. Ok, having pp tube amps and a ss amp, I wanted to experience the set sound with my 1979 Cornwalls. I have a AES AE-3 preamp with upgraded caps and nos Sylvania 6SN7WGT's. The Wrights have nos RCA 5Y3's, Jan Phillips 6SN7GT's and RCA dual plate 2A3's. The Cornwalls are in a 30 x 20 foot room with a rugged floor and a tile ceiling. I've been listening to jazz. Patricia Barber... the cool album, Khan Jamal ... Passion Warrior album, Stanely Turrentine ..the Sugar album as well as assorted Davis and Coltrane. These amps btw are dead quite .. no audible hum, ... none. I was worried about the sound levels I be able to reach with the 3.5 watts of flea power. No problem at all. It will not shake the room, but I can play it LOUD with no problem, loud enough to sit in the next room an listen, loud enough to listen to it upstairs. BTW it sounds great out of the room. I have not tried rock or complex symphonic pieces, but on jazz this amp does not run out of steam. I was worried about the bass. The Light My Fire cut by Patrica Barber is loaded with bass. Well with these amps it's there and very real sounding and convincingly there. Yes the pp 80 watts of the Cary or 230 watts of the ss amp has more punch, but these amps are very capable in the lower end. The bass lines accompanying her vocals is right on. Ok let's push the amps and see what happens. Playing now is Enigma MCMXC a.D. cd, the last cut Back to the Rivers of Belief. It starts with a closely miked kick drum and some high percussion. The chimes, bells and tympani are amazing. Each is a succinct PING, not PPing or a PINGG, just a PING. The male voice is well displayed,quite separated and nicely imaged against the driving kick drum and high percussion. the driving bass line lacks some punch ... no wall shaking here, need more watts for that, but the fundamental sound is there. I was not worried about the highs or mids and had no need to be. It's there in spades. Female voice, male voice, piano, sax, all of it is there precisely defined, no mush, no midrange bloom . Each instrument is separated from the other and imaged from left to right and front to back in an amazing manner. No hole between the speakers ( placed 10 feet apart) at all. It's just there just like it should be. If you get the idea I like the Wright's your right. I like them a lot. I also like my other amps a lot. I've used the Cary SLI-80 in the 50 watt Triode mode for about 3 weeks, the Soundcraftsman ss with the AES pre and a ss preamp for about a week and the EICO HF-81 for 3 days before I hooked these up to the Cornwalls. They all sound different. The ss amp with the tube pre is going to be placed with the B&W's, the Cornwalls don't need the power. The ss can play loud, very very loud with gut shaking bass. It does not image as well and the mids and highs are shrill on the Cornwalls. The EICO Hf-81 is a great old Williamson design 14 watt pp EL-84 amp which shows itself very well. I have no criticisms of it. Compared to the Wrights is has a little more bass. The mids and highs are not as well defined and a little softer. But all in all it has a first class sound, very sweet and inviting and easy to listen to. The Cary in the triode mode is great. It has the power to control the 15" woofers and give back slamming bass while at the same time having a glorious midrange and etched highs. Compared to the Wright's the the highs are a touch, just a touch less well defined and slightly rolled off. The major difference between the two is imaging. The Wright seems to have greater front to back depth. I know there are strong opinions about SETs on this forum. To the pros... I agree with you. To the cons.. while SET amps do have some shortcomings ( bass slam, high volume) the advantages of SETS ( mids, highs, imaging) are hard to deny, You can get an idea about them from reading this forum, but to any who is wondering what they are all about you need to listen to them and find out for yourself. Hi, I've got a matched pair of slightly used solid gray plate Tungsol 6550's I use with my Cary SLI-80. Wonderful tubes. I paid 300 dollars for them. I wonder how much better if any the Genlex KT-88's are ? 10 times better ? I doubt it .... I doubt they are " better " at all, just different. What some people pay for status tubes just amazes me. Larry BTW, that's one advantage of ss, no tubes to buy ever. But tube rolling is fun, isn't it.

hi, I use both. With my Forte's a Cary SLI-80 in the triode mode. Great sound. With my Cornwalls a EICO HF-81 or a AES AE-3 preamp with a ss Soundcraftsman power amp. The EICO is delicate with beautuful midrange. The tube preamp & ss amp is just as articulate and has much more bass slam ( not unexpected with 230 watts/ch ). Next in line for the Corns are a pair of Wright Sound Labs 2a3 monoblocks. Larry
