Hi all, I have Cornwall speakers and want to get a set amp to try out with them for 2000 dollars or less. The short list is a Welbourn 300b or a Wright Sound Labs 2A3 or 300b amp. All of these amps come highly recommemnded. I listen to jazz in a 14x25 room room at moderate levels. Comments are appreciated on the sound of a 2a3 vs a 300b and the suitablilty of these amps for my listening situation. Where does one tube type excell over the other if any place. Has any one listened to both to compare them ( tube types, not necessarliy the specific amps ). No flames please, I already have two pp tube amps and on ss power amp and like them all for what they can do. thanks, Larry

Hi, Tell me the same thing when you lose your job because of cheaper imports ! Larry -
hi, I'm have that in my home right now. I want the Cornwalls in my main system and my wife wants the Forte's, size not sound considerations on her part. She agrees the Cornwalls sound better. Deeper soundstage, better imaging and just more real and musical. As far as rocking, they both do very very well, but the Cornwalls according to my wife sound just like a rock concert ... ear bleeding loud with lots of bass punch. A bigger wall of sound then the Forte's can do with a not quite as deep bass, but the bass the Cornwall reproduces is bigger...it has more visceral impact ...everything outside and inside you shakes. I guess that last few lower hz is not all that important. Larry

hi all, My Cornwalls (1979) arrived yesterday. FedEx took 3 days to deliver from TX to PA and they were well packed and arrived in good shape. I put them in the LR for now (my wife is not talking to me at the moment. I said just for a test run of a few days and then I'll move them to the rec room. She said OK. Now I guess it depends on our differing definitions of what a few days is They look great ( not mint bot good) and sound fantastic. Using them with the Cary SLI-80 for now. Compared to my Forte's the first very noticable thing is the room filling sound, imaging and depth of sound. They are captivating. Picture attached.

Poll: Prefered type of amplification...

hi, Actually I'm surprised at the number of tubes amps. As I'm in the tube camp, I think that's great. Larry -
Hi, Well that's one way of looking at it. Another is he took a non functioning reciever and converted to a worlikg amplifier which is going to sell at a very low price, probably a little over $100.00. If the tubes test strong, they are worth that or more on the used market. I think it's a reasonable way for someone to try out tubes and see if they like them. It does carry a 1 year warrenty. Larry

hi, Yes the tubes are very nice. I have a HF-81 rebulit by Hotglass Audio and it's very nice indeed. Worked flawlessly for the past year and had a very sweet, detailed sound wtih a solid bass. And the price looks right, probalbly will go for under $200.00 Larry

Trey said this would get me started on the forum.

Only Trey's better half can get away with this, We will be polite. I love my tubes. Larry Max (my avitar) is saying " Did she really say that ?" -
hi, Good thread. My Kyocera is ?? 18 years old and my Sony is 10 years old. I like them both but am thinking about getting a newer one. Are new ones really any better? How about the question of tubed cd palyers? How about the question of combined SACD and CD players? Does upsampeling the data help ? I don't know the answers and would like some help before I spend or waste my bucks. thanks, Larry BTW the avitar is my dog Max. Looking for some good doggie tunes for him. At present he likes Coltrane, Davis, Monk and Mozart. Anything else he walks out of the room.

Hi, I asked myself this question after browsing the Audiogon forms for a while. It just amazes me how much high end stuff comes up for sale after only a few months of use. The discussion forums have 21000 posts to the amplifer, speaker and technical forums and 2445 posts to the music forum. Many of the members there are most likely equipment listeners. Once the question is asked, what criteria do you use to answer it ? For a start What's worth more your CD/SACD/LP collection or your equipment ? How long ago did you buy your last piece of equipment ? How old is your oldest piece of equipment ? Do you read music reviews or equipment reviews ? Do you attend live concerts of any sort or attend Audio shows ? With your friends do you talk about the muisic or the stuff its palyng on ? Please chip in with other thoughts ... I'm a music listener from way back and a relatively new Klipsch fan Larry

hi, Fortes are great speakers. They will astound you with the quality of sound they can deliver. They do show up poor source components. IMHO they sound better with tube amplifiers. Good listening Larry

HI, Ok I finished the evening with Mahler's third, glourious !! Larry

hi, many evenings as tonight I listen to WRTI FM in Philadelphia. A 24 hr Jazz/Classical station that's brodcasting in HD radio. As a result the signal is relatively uncompressed on analog tuners and as soon as HD tuners become available in the fall the brodcast will be of CD quality. They will multicast 24 hrs each of jazz and classical. Larry

hi, Great review, it goes on my let's think about list along with the Peach and Wright Sound Lab's WLA12A line pre-amp. Hmmm, do I want 6SN7's or 6922's in my preamp ? Larry

hi, I made contact with the seller today and he's a very intesting man. While in college he had 2 pairs of Cornwalls in his dorm room. A long time Klipsch fan. At present he has a another 2 pairs of Cornwalls, a pair Belle's and La Scalas. I think he's planning on selling two or three of the units he has. He has in the past made three other pairs of Cornwalls buy buying the component parts fron Hope andbuliding the cabinets himself. He has a business which ships all over the world and knows how to pack and ship large items including pallets for really big items. His EBay name is raptor1021 for those of you who may be interested in following his up coming auctions. Larry -
