  1. I had a recording that the crowd noise over-shadowed the band playing.......very annoying and disappointing. What gets me is.......Who edits this stuff? [8-)] I've got more good than bad recordings........but the bad ones can make you wonder how they even make it out the door.[:S]
  2. Very nice job Erland!! Now, go buy an XTI for 300 bucks and do a side by side.........Report back immediately with your experience.[] []
  3. That's good to know.......kind of what I guesstimated. In the meantime, I'll be enjoying my vintage Marantz.[]
  4. Why look? Just order one built for you.... One built........vs.............one used...........$$$?
  5. Yeah........I had 45 subs............sold em all and bought some BOSE wave radios and some acousti-mass..........Now I'm rockin'. []
  6. Listened to the VRD's with the RF-7's. I've been home for about an hour or so listening to my RF-7's with the XTI's. It took all of about 4 minutes to realize that the VRD's sound quality was superior to the XTI's.......surprised I'm sure. RF-7's with the VRD's........Highs were very detailed, mids were sweet but the bass was lacking. I'm used to running subs but I'm being as open minded as possible. I am all for using a subwoofer because when properly tuned they add so much to the body of the speaker IMHO.........when not set up properly, they ruin everything. RF-7's with the XTI-2000's..........Well, what can I say...........I'm still happy with them for the price that I paid. They have plenty of power to push the 7's to there limit........Rough around the edges compared to the VRD's but in no way are they lacking any "drive". That being said, I think the XTI's lend themselves to the music that I primarily listen to (hard rock). I may however, have found the amp for my bedroom system. The stereo VRD I just listened to with the RF-7's sounds like it would go great with my JM Peach and RB-75's or my 74' Heresy's. Glad you digging the amp. How long are you going to have this amp for audition? I can easily send you a tube compliment to try that will bring that bass perfomance and over all power up a notch. I think you would be shocked at the difference. Keep in mind your using a purpose built custom amplifier. The goal of that amplifier was to excell at the music that particular customer enjoyed......which was Jazz. Simply changing out the output tubes and rectifier will have a huge effected on bass response and over all power reserve. Craig Unortunately, I do not have the amp in my possession. I was only able to visit the owners home and get a listen.......and it was well worth it to get an idea of what the amp could do. I beleive this forum member did in fact buy it from a gentleman in California (Allen Songer?).Craig, I would like to be on the lookout for an amp similar to this for my bedroom system. It would go in between a JM Peach and RB-75's. I also have a pair of 74' Heresy's that could go with that system.........I'm leaning towards the 75's but we'll see. My music tastes on that system is mostly smooth jazz............it is however a bedroom system so when taking a shower getting ready to go out, rock music gets cranked pretty good and loud. Any help would be appreciated.[]
  7. I apologize........I should rephrase........The bass may have not have been lacking so much as I guess I was hoping/expecting it to be fuller sounding. In the last few months I've been trying to hear as many tubes as possible...........all of them have been with Heritage speakers. Now that I've heard them with RF-7's........the speakers that I listen to every day..........the differences are truly evident........in favor of the tubes. Listening to my RF-7's with the XTI's in comparison to the VRD's..........my system sounds like a couple of light bed sheets are draped over my speakers. Sad but true.

  9. Yeah, the 75's are great for a 17X17 bedroom..........the Heresy's seem like they need more room, though.
  10. Well then you're auditioning the wrong amp for wall demolision ... but you will get some idea of the character. When is this going to happen? Maybe I could send you a different tube set to try in the amps that will give it a bit more umph...... But of course you will need the owners permission and be comfortable biasing the amps. Craig I have two systems in my house........a bedroom system that is very casual and is intended for the best possible sq that I can afford (Heresy's and/or RB-75's).In the other system with the RF-7's I have noticed that in a typical situation of having some friends over for a few drinks........listening to cd's at a respectable level.........if I say "check this out" and really lay into it, I'll get comments like.........."Wow, that sounds great but it is very loud!!" Put in a concert DVD and crank it to the same or even higher listening levels..........."Man, this is actually like being AT the concert".........I'll say "Is it too loud?.............They'll say......."No, well, it's loud but it' awesome!!"..............I'll say "Does it sound harsh in any way?".............They'll say "No, the detail is incredible, and the bass........" And quite a few drinks later......I'll say "Man, I need more power"..........LOL []
  11. I have no clue I've never heard an crown Xti and from what I've heard around here lately I'm glad LOL!! By the way I have never built a 35 watt VRD..... are you going to be using a VRD stereo amp? Maybe the one I built custom for Allan Songer using 350B output tubes? I'm sure it will do just fine of course its not going to blow the walls down if that's what your after. What preamp will be used? and what kind of music? The 350B version is really best for Jazz and acoustic music in my opinion. It's definitely nothing like a set of VRD mono blocks or the normally KT88 configured Stereo amp when it comes sheer power or strangle hold on the woofers. Craig Yeah, now that you mention it I believe it is a VRD stereo amp. It will be run with a JM Peach preamp........which is what I also run with my RF-7's.I will be going into the listening session with an open mind and open ears........since in my system I run four RF-7's powered by XTI-2000's. Various types of music will be played to get the feel for it......at this point I don't know what tubes are in it. I'l post some comparisons tonight when I get home. PS.........When in the mood, I do want to blow the walls down!![li][]
  12. I presently use XTI's to power my RF-7's. This weekend I will be checking out some RF-7's powered by 35wpc VRD's. What differences can I expect to hear?.............seriously.
  13. I "passive" bi-amp with multiple amps and an active crossover. To me, the active crossover is basically allowing you to use tone controls to tweak your sound the way you want it in addition to the benefits of "passively" bi-amping. It works very well for my tastes, some will argue that isn't worth it because it has nothing scientific to back it up. All I know is that I've gone back and forth and always go back to this method. I wish I didn't because I could use the extra amps elsewhere in my house......oh well.[] If you try this, I'd be curious to hear your impressions.
  14. "True flat"? Would that be the same as not using the eq at all?
  15. Yep, stir the "pot" with "POS"...this could easily be interchangeable...oops...did I just say that? Just kiddin'. You know...the XTi has some cool features through the software. The -48 dB slope on the subs is very noticeable. Nice bass. Man I love rednecks! And they don't have to be from Arkansas either!!! But those Arkansas rednecks sure know how to handle their liquor jc JC.............The other night when you had the house to yourself and were jammin'.......I did the same by listening to the whole Godsmack "Changes" DVD beginning to end.......full throttle.[Y] I'm not their biggest fan and their name doesn't sit well with me but that DVD has awesome sound for that type of music. A must have for anyone that digs concert DVD's. Check it out and you'll see what I mean.........only one catch......it's gotta be LOUD!!! If nothing else, the dual drum solo is sure to impress.[li]
  16. I had the opportunity to visit SET12's house a few weekends ago. His DIY gear and knowledge of it is very impressive......intimidating to a "tube newbie" like myself but very, very interesting. Dan is a great guy with such a passion in his/our hobby. Thanks again for "schooling" me on different aspects of the hobby. SET 12's Fortes were the third pair of Fortes I've heard...........they were pumping out bass like I had not heard even close in the previous two pairs. You'd swear a sub was in the room!![] His Fortes imaged in a stunning fashion as well.
  17. Why all the hostility? Oh, I forgot........it's a Crown thread.[8o|][]
  18. They were 150 watt mono-blocks on loan from Bob O'Connel himself (Morningstar Audio). I'll check it out and find which ones they were. Kev..........You have an e-mail.
  19. I have found out first hand that room treatments really do help........key word being help........they don't produce miracles but they can be used to assist in correcting what needs attention.........ie. HF's in an XTI-RF-7 combination.......which is what I use. After hearing the Cornwall's with the XTI last weekend, I'd like to get my 7's over there and do a side-by-side comparison. JB........What did you find to be "less than optimal" with the XTI-RF-7?
  20. You'll be hearing from me.........I've got four 7's.
  21. I had the same opportunity today. Life is good. The Godsmack "Changes" DVD puts asses in the seats at my house......(dual drum solo)[Y]
