  1. Well, things weren't the easiest to get set up. I had to remove the bottom bases of each Ultra in order to install the banana plugs. I guess they're not going anywhere, which is good. Absolutely impossible to accidentally pull those suckers out! I hooked them up, turned on the amp and slowly adjusted the gain controls. I ran Audyssey and found I had the gains way too low. I think that's probably because this is a pro amp and it isn't getting a hot enough signal from my receiver. I bumped up the gain controls and tweaked the output levels on my receiver and MAN OH MAN OH MAN. Those Ultra drivers are Ultra alright! Tossed in Transformers on Blu-Ray and the Ironside flip scene vibrated everything in the basement that wasn't bolted down. My PS3 remote fell off the back of the couch and into my lap. My wife rented Eagle Eye tonight and even though there wasn't a ton of LFE, what was there sounded incredible. The Ultras have a much more articulate type of bass compared to my PC-Plus. Every bass frequency seems to be that much more well defined. And when it needs to, it pounds the crap out of you. I just looked up the manual for the sub online and realized I had it in the wrong setting. It has 'Parallel' 'Stereo' and 'Bridge' modes. It was set to Parallel by the guy who shipped it to me so I assumed that was right. Well, turns out Parallel mode takes only the input from Channel 1 and divides it between the two outputs. Stereo mode is what I want to have it in. I don't think it'll affect the sound too much but I'll have to try it out and see. I was getting some HUGE bass and according to the manual it said the Clip light should blip just briefly during peak operation. Well, I wasn't anywhere near the Clip light coming on with the magnificent output from these monsters. By the way, I'm doing everything in my power to keep both Ultras and also my MBM-12 instead of having to sell the MBM. I can't hook the MBM up right now because I don't have another y-splitter to use. The Ultras definitely have a ton more mid-bass slam than the 16-46 does but they still don't match the output of the MBM.
  2. Well, I'm still in process of cleaning our basement before everything gets set up. My wife thinks that cleaning everything today right now is better than cleaning tomorrow. "Yes, dear. My new toys can wait." [:S] Here's the lineup obviously not where they will be finally installed: SVS & Samson amp
  3. Well, you've identified the problem. Now its time to get the creative juices flowing and see what furniture re-arrangements you can do with the limitations of your room. Trust me - it will be worth it in the end.
  4. So you want to get a receiver and use it as a pre-amp with an outboard power amp? If so, I'd recommend a receiver from a brand such as Denon, Harman/Kardon, Onkyo or Yamaha. Find one with the features you're looking for. Don't skimp too much on quality for the receiver though. For the outboard power amp you can get three channel amps from companies such as Rotel. They'd run your front three speakers and generally give them more headroom than the amplifiers in a receiver can. You can use the receiver's amp for the rear channels or buy a matching two channel amp from the same company and series as the three channel amp for the fronts.
  5. I replied without looking at the other posts but I believe it is Pulsewidth Code Modulation. Let's see if I'm right................
  6. Placement looks good, its usually recommended to have them a little closer to you, maybe a couple inches behind your head but at least you're putting them on the side walls rather than behind you like many mistakenly do. Side surrounds are recommended to be speakers like the RS rather than the RS series. THX and Dolby labs both recommend wide dispersion side surrounds rather than direct radiating ones.
  7. Wow, these are heavy suckers. I think they're almost 20 pounds heavier than my PC-Plus 16-46. Crazy because the Ultras are shorter and don't have a built-in amp. I guess the driver in the Ultras is a much heavier and heavy-duty woofer! Unfortunately the grills took a little abuse during shipping - both of them are dented in with one of them being dented very noticeably. I emailed the seller and he wanted me to email him pictures and work something out. I know SVS sells a grill kit for the subs so I would be able to replace them. The Samson S1000 amp is also a lot heavier than I thought. The seller included RCA to XLR adapters along with it so I could use my current RCA cables. One big surprise was that he included a pair of custom Canare cables with spade ends on one side and some ridiculously expensive looking banana plugs on the other side. He never mentioned anything about including those with the transaction. I think I got a pretty sweet deal on the whole thing - original list price for the amp and two subs was $1999 plus shipping and I bought everything from him for $850 shipped. Also, my Quartet center sold on eBay for a lot more than I thought it would, so I just may end up keeping both Ultras and my Hsu MBM-12 instead of selling the MBM like I thought I would.
  8. If you're playing a Blu-Ray disc on your PS3 through HDMI and want to listen to the regular Dolby Digital and/or DTS that's recorded on the disc all you have to do is hit the triangle button on the remote and go to the selection called "Audio Selection" I think. It will cycle through all the audio formats that are encoded on the disc. That way you can do your own instant A/B/C/etc. comparison of lossless verses compressed audio.
  9. Depends on what you mean by "good" price. What do you want to spend? Depending on where you're putting the speakers, side surrounds should be wide dispersion type such as the Klipsch RS series and rear surrounds should be more of a direct-radiating speaker such as the RB series.
  10. Asking the same question three times in different areas of the forum might make it difficult to keep things on track. You might want to stick with your original posting.
  11. Biggest problem is that you're sitting in the middle of the room. That's the part of the room where bass output is the lowest. Adding a sub isn't the answer - moving your listening position is. Divide the length of your room into thirds and then sit either 1/3 of the way from the front wall or 2/3 of the way fromt the front wall. (Either 6 feet or 12 feet away). You'll probably want to do 12 feet because 6 feet seems awfully close.
  12. i'll reply in all lower case letters to try and equalize all the shouting in here. [] there weren't any specific surrounds made for the klf series but many have recommended the ksp-s6 as worthy. in reality almost any wide dispersion will probably be sufficient, such as the rs-42. as far as subwoofer, too many to recommend however the klipsch sub-12 has a great reputation as far as value for the $.
  13. For 5.1, your surround speakers should be placed on the side walls just slightly behind your main listening position. Side surrounds are recommended to be wide dispersion speakers like the RS series. RS-42s or RS-52s would be perfect for your front speakers.
  14. Its on my NetFlix queue in Blu-Ray format. My wife groaned when she saw John Mayer. I'm not a huge fan but the concert's had some great reviews as to audio fidelity.
  15. The deep freezer here, its -19 right now, -23 tonight. Tomorrow' high is -4 and low is -24. Yesterday it was 85 degrees warmer in my house than it was outside.
  16. The deal I made with myself is that after all is said and done I'll only have two subs. I know my current setup is a good combo as far as the 16-46 digging super deep and the MBM giving the slam. I guess at this point I'm looking for more SPL and not as much depth charged bass. I have a feeling that the Ultras will give me decent upper midbass output, unlike the 16-46. My gut feeling is that I'm going to keep both Ultras and sell the 16-46 and the MBM, but we'll have to see. They should be here Friday according to UPS's site!
  17. No, since your KLFs are rear ported they need to be close to a wall to allow the ports to interact with the wall and room to help bring out their bass output.
  18. The PS3 has a harness that allows either HDMI or component video to be used, but not both. If you use the component cables for video, you can only output optical digital from the PS3 and that will not pass the uncompressed audio formats through it. The only way to get uncompressed audio through the PS3 is through HDMI.
  19. Oh great, so I just bought the Ultras for nothing then! [] I already have the 16-46 and the MBM. I guess I'll experiment with them when they're here and see.
  20. I think if you drew an imaginary line from the part of the wall that juts out to the wall behind the speakers and put the right side of the right speaker up against that line, toed them inwards slightly you'll be set. I'd move the TV stand and everything backwards, again starting about 15" from the back wall with the speakers. As far as the hiss is concerned, you've got a rats nest of wires all crossing over each other behind your TV (Don't worry, I do too). Try and separate power cords, speaker cords and RCA cords. If RCA and power cords have to intersect, do so at a 90 degree angle from each other and try not to have too many wires running parallel to each other. That probably will help, although Klipsch speakers are so efficient they many times will emit a slight hissing sound when your amp/receiver is turned on.
  21. I have a PC+ 16-46. I emailed SVS a while back and asked about which crossover setting to use. They said due to room gain 20Hz was actually their recommended setting and only the very, very lowest of frequencies would be reduced but overall a higher SPL. I ran it that way until I bought my Hsu MBM-12 and now changed it back to 16Hz mode. With your 20-39 they might even recommend putting it in 25Hz mode for even higher over SPL. I don't have a PC13 Ultra, but I am selling my 16-46 to help pay for dual CS-Ultras. See my ad in the For Sale section. [Y]
  22. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. I've gone and done it again. If you were given the choice between dual SVS CS-Ultras driven by a 1000 watt pro amp versus a single CS-Ultra paired with an Hsu MBM-12, which would you choose? Well, very shortly I will have four subwoofers at my house. Unfortunately two must go. I'm selling my current SVS PC-Plus 16-46 for sure. Then its a matter of do I keep only one of the CS's along with the MBM, or sell both my current SVS and the MBM and keep the two Ultras. I love the addition the MBM has made in midbass output. Bass drums and LFE has reached a new level with it. I guess I'll have to get the Ultras and then experiment with different setups and decide. [*-)]
