  1. Bloomis, Super K on Ford or Big K on Ann Arbor Road?
  2. Nothing better than getting Ray and Gil to comment on the same thread. I have used Dennon, Marantz, Yahmaha and Kenwood overe the past 25 years for amplification; Due to damping factor and other considerations I would like to try NAD for my next amp. I cannot afford really expensive SS stuff or tubes.
  3. Well... I am not much of an electronics geek but a roadie in high school and college 20 years ago; so I have opinions. We studied Klipsch speakers alot and decided marine grade birch plywood, screws, glue, 2x4 braces and a low center of gravity were our "tools" we implemented in trying to minimize cabinet ressonance. In my system I used a pair of old 28 inch MDF stands from Wood Technology; not bad but not a suitable complement for the RB-5. My shot filled Sanus stands are about 35-40 pounds now. I beleive the energy is transferred through the stands to the spikes in the floor very effectively. When I touch the stands at high volumes I feel very minimal vibration. By "moving" I mean vibration. The RF-3 has more "slam" but you have very little tweaking you could do minimize ressonance of the cabinet as you get used to the speaker over time. Tweaking is an addiction I spend alot of time on. With a tower there usually is not any "ballast" and the drivers being mounted high give it a high center of gravity. That is why I really like Lascallas(high effeciency, high mass, low center of gravity and horny) but my wife is slow to warm up to the idea of having a pair of "refridgerators" in the family room.
  4. I agree with the Michael Hedges. Another one is the Native American musician Douglass Spotted Eagle. He has an CD called "Closer to Far Away"; I think track 4 is called House of dawn light Great percussion and wooden flutes.
  5. Expecting the RB5 route to be smaller room presence and lower cost is not the case. I have tried 3 different stand concepts and now use the Sanus steel 24 inch with 20 lbs of lead shot per stand to dampen vibration related distortion. I think the RF 3 would be more prone to "moving" at high volumes. A very subjective thought; but that is what I like about hifi. Some objectivity, but much more subjectivity; it keeps things lively!
  6. It is quite a leap of faith to send your equipment out like that for that kind of mod; especially since you are out of the country. Just makes me realize I need an analog 2 channel room as well as a multichannel sollid state room. Sounds like you are set for good listening!
  7. I just received an Adire Audio Rava sub it was $399 plus shipping from Seatle Washington. Sealed 60 pound cabinet with oak veneer 12 inch front firing woofer 275 watt amp at 4 ohms. I was between this one and the HSU VTF sub. I have not listened to it alot yet; but the build appears to be very robust. It kind of reminded me of an M&K sealed design for about one third of the price. I figured if I do not like it I can start changing out the driver for something more exotic. The base is a square of .75 inch mdf. Has anyone had any success spiking the bottom of a sub? I have carpet on top of a concrete slab in the family room, I have only just set the subs on the carpet in the past.
  8. I have 4 kids aged 6-17 years. They have memorized a great portion of the "Holy Grail" script(even the 6 year old). Am I warping my kids? Is it better than the sex ridden network TV? We are all doomed. What burns like witches? More witches!s>
  9. Go for the following if possible UHF remote Dish 500 Dolby Digital S video output
  10. ShapeShifter, Since you live in Southfield and I in Livonia did you get the unit in town somewhere in Detroit? How much did you pay?
  11. I like the RC-3 alot. Nice looking cabinet, bi wire capability, and more mid bass SLAM. A noticable difference; give them a listen.
  12. If you really have to put them on a TV a dampening compund would probably be a good idea. Blu Tack or maybe some neoprene plumbing washers. I have 24 inch Sanus Lead filled stands. The resonance from the TV cabinet may add some distortion. Good Luck
  13. The quest for the perfect receiver continues... The Klipsch site has discussed Marantz, Yamaha, Dennon(of course), HK and others. I was reading some really good old reveiws of the NAD 317 2 channel integrated amp. There are just a few NAD HT reviews. Anyone listened to the T761?
  14. I like Sanus stands(fill with sand or lead shot). Audio Advisor has lots of other brands; most are Stereophile aproved. I have stayed away from wood; my screws loosened up(not just the ones in my head).
  15. The Audio Flynn trash can or maybe kegger hypothesis is... If you have a midfi to lowfi HT receiver and use the "small" speaker setting you are letting the sub do the "dirty work" under whatever HZ you have options for defining. Therefore, you are only taxing the power amplifier section from 60 or 100 HZ and up instead of from 20 HZ. I hope the amp runs cleaner...
  16. I have also wondered how to classiffy the MIT cables plus "tweak". An in line fixed EQ? The components really adjust the resistance? Has anybody seen a detailed review on any of the MIT cables? They are kind of an expensive "tweak" considering it may difficult to audition unless you take advantage of the Audio Advisor 30 day money back offer.
  17. I was inferring the same thought process for HT receivers... "Audio quality and video isolation probably go hand in hand as the price increments". The $ 2000 - 3000 for separates in HT is really nonvalue added for me since I listen to music 90% of the time or more. I will probably stay in the $1000 - 1300 range for a HT receiver to secure the "perceived " audio quality I am looking to get in 2 channel.
  18. Most people neglect the RB5. Nice looking little cabinet, not too large, and loses only a little spl to the RF3. Sounds great on my Sanus Steel stands with 20 pounds of lead shot per stand. Most places do not demo the RB5s with as stable of stand as I have used.
  19. This discussion continues to be inconclusive. I like my RB5s biwired; but now I am not sure. I changed to biwire 6 months ago. I may have to go back to single wire for a while to revisit the audio quality. I surely will replace the bars with Speaker wire. Any Bob comments on this issue?
  20. I am going for the Adire Audio Rava 12 in. sub. 250 watt at 4 ohms $399.00 plus shipping sealed cabinet oak veneer 60 lbs. For the price if I decide I do not like it I can upgrade the driver to some EV or Dynaudio driver. I acknowledge it as a leap of faith but I did that with the MSB Link II DAC and love it for CD playback. Anybody ever bought something from Adire?
  21. All the new HT receivers I am considering(Marantz SR8000 and Yamaha RXV 1000 and Rotel) seem to spend alot of cost on video switching. I currently use an outboard Terk non powered S Video switcher. I do not see it as a dire inconvenience to have to manually engage other video sources. Do we think running video signals through a receiver can adversley affect the audio quality? Is there a manufacturer that puts the technology in the receiver and designs no video switching into a receiver?
  22. This is a pretty cool site. They even let SEB post feverishly and I am still not sure he owns any Klipsch speakers. I am more comfortable hearing about the customer concerns. If there were none I would be convinced the site is censored.
  23. One year ago I bought my Audio Quest type 6 speaker cable to try some "high end" cable for my 3.1s. It was "used" cable from Audio Advisor for $ 90. I think it made some difference over the 14 gauge basic Monster Cable I was using. Then I upgraded to RB5s in August 2000. A couple of months ago I biwired the RB5s using the Type 6 for the highs and some new 12 gauge Radio Shack speaker wire for the lows. NOW that sounded better! I do not think I will buy Type 6 to replace the Radio Shack. I cannot imagine it making much of a difference. There are probably countless low quality wires and PCB traces inside speakers,cd player and receiver that we will all have to live with as MDENEEN stated. Does anybody disagree that biwiring offers advantages?
  24. I am very close to trying the Adire Audio Rava sub. 12 inch 60 pounds sealed cabinet 250 watt Oak veneer Hard to find reviews and needs to be mail ordered from Washington. I really like the design intent of the sealed box M&K subs for music but hate the idea of the high cost of an ugly black box sub. $399.00 for the Rava
