The best "sounding" preamp I ever heard with Khorns was an Audio Research SP6.

I sold that and bought an Audio Research SP6A. Mistake. I had that upgraded to a SP6B (still a mistake) which I still have and use for phono only.

To this day I wish I had the ARC SP back. Definitely not "accurate", but boy could it make the Khorns "sing" (with Luxman MB3045 (still have those too)

I sold my ARC SP14 last year. It was ok but as a hybrid with a 6DJ8 as I recall it was amazingly quiet but a little cold. Bought a top of the line Furman with the proceeds. Conrad Johnson PV is quiet and just a little warm. Much better soundstage ,attack and decay. I am just a 12AX7 guy. Maybe someday I find a HH Scott preamp for s reasonable price. Recent prices are a bit over the top.

  2. When you only see the sun two days a month in Michigan 6 months out of the year you have to listen to perky music.

    Elvis Costello

    Romantic s

    B 52 s

    Dick Dale

    Rockpile

    Brian Setzer

    Can be a broad genre.

But what about new power pop go invigorate a cold dark night with your best friend of 36 years ?

Going out on a limb.... KEITH URBAN.

    The Fighter with Carrie Underwood.

What is your idea on 201X power pop?

    Power yet ?

I didn't want to say it before but was thinking now that this should be ending soon for everyone up there, will some local agency check homes that were out of power so see it everyone is ok if they haven't already. It's definitely a life threatening situation, I hope everyone found a way to stay warm.

    40 homes left!

Electric monopoly is going to take some criticism. The easement that was affecting our lost power was completely overgrown with 80 foot trees. Should have been thinned out sometime in the past 30 years.

  4. Repair crews coming from 5 states.

    May have power Monday night.

The cold is nasty but we do not have hills and mountains like Tennessee. Some swamps are tough to repair the power lines.

    Thanks to all.

  5. Consumers Power outages

I am prepped but off electric since Wednesday morning 3:00 AM , like the album title.

    Not much news coverage.

In the last two weeks we went from super cold to snow to thaw to flooding to two ice storms to 45 mph winds today.

We will not have electric until Monday night.

Cast iron wood stove in the living room is exceptional. WION Ionia Michigan has a great diverse set list by battery powered tiny boom box.

Keep the less fortunate of the tens of thousands in your prayers.

    Regards to PWK nation;

Magic?  One of the best to ever play the game.  He saw that floor like no other I've even seen play.

And in his first NBA finals Kareem was out injured and Magic played center as I recall.

Maybe that will inspire Cassius and the others.

Magic and the other legacy players are tight to the school more than most universities.

    Yep.

    That's what I did.

And I might add, that comparison "test" was about as blind as one can get. I didn't even know what MQA was until after the fact. I just knew that one of each of the three recordings sounded more like the real thing, especially the solo piano piece.

You disparage yourself by getting snarky with aarto.

Just short of 20 years of quality contributions here.

Personally I would never mess with a bass player from Chicago.

    Kingston Mines rocks!

Strictly sold state, specifically class D.  My tube rolling days are over.  I got rid of my last space heater.

How do you stay warm? 🙂

For phono and pre I am a 12AX7 guy. VRD and KT88 guy for power. I am past the amp rolling phase of my life.

If I won the lotto Ihave would try Channel Islands class D or Accuphase SS.

I see why you used magnets, there’s no co-gluesion with Russia.

Seriously, they look great.  While listening to @ClaudeJ1‘s Jubilees awhile back, we were discussing a Southeast Michigan get together.  Would you be interested?  In the spring I’ll start a thread dedicated to such an event.  Until then, if you want to be on the mailing list let me know.  @mopar dave @Treyphan @bhenry @picky @Audio Flynn @teaman

I still spend a weekend in Detroit every now and then. Keep me "posted". LOL

  11. Since I moved to the tiny house on the farm 7 years ago the Dean modded Chorus IIs have been in storage. In 2019 they will get back in play once an addition is complete. I have only heard stock RF 7.

The Chorus II is a piece of history being said it was the last speaker design PWK was actively involved in.

No wrong answer here. If I never found the Chorus IIs and bought RF 7 which were under consideration I probably would have sold them in the downsizing process.

My Chorus II's have sounded best on the following integrateds, all of which can be found under $1k.

    • Yamaha AS-1000 - Great phono section, plenty of power, really nice build quality
    • Rogue Sphinx - Plenty of power, excellent bass slam and high freq detail, good phono section
    • Musical Fidelity A5 - Overkill power, great bass, smooth mids and highs, may be tough to find under $1k, but I bought and sold mine well under that
    • Scott 222 (rebuilt) - Excellent dynamics, great phono stage, one of my favorites
    • Scott LK-72 (restored) - Good dynamics, exceptionally smooth mid range, good bass, great phono

All in all, I prefer tubes on my Chorus II's.  The Scott amps, once restored, are just stunning.

Even though it was bass shy compared to my Scott 208 Power amp I do miss my Scott LK-48. Attack, decay, instumental realism and wide soundstage.

The first time I heard The Band sing The Weight on the LK-48 with my Chorus IIs was the beginning of the end of my interest in Home Theater.

  13. Do not know anything about it but would be cool if it was a short course with nasty dog legs.

I would rather see their skill on a nasty 6500 course than the orchestrated 7200 years courses.

Like to see them humbled by a Donald Ross course of another built before 1950 or 1970.

Another vote for a used Channel Islands VDA2 w/power supply.  Also the Schiit DACs are great bang for the buck.

I have never heard the Schiit but read countless good reviews. They get a little confusing with all permutations of models. I will buy one someday if I do not save up for a Benchmark.
