Thanks a lot, John, I'd been wondering for a bit how they still got a hold of those things. How long's the T35 been out of production? Shame EV killed it... nice tweeters.

I note the La Scala and K-horn still have a K-77-M and the pic is obviously still a T35, so the question is, is Klipsch sitting on a big stockpile of these little guys? EV doesn't make them anymore that I know of.

Jon, I'll have to look at the crossovers, that might be a worthwhile thing to try on mine. Maybe 3 db down and they'd be perfect. More like my Speakerlabs (which when set flat on the tone controls extend pretty damn far), only way more efficient.

Jon, If I shelved down the mid and tweeter anymore, I'd probably only do it another 3 db on these woofers. As is, I just run the bass boost on the receiver and it's about right. I love the sound. I never had any gripe with the mid or tweeters on these things and now that they've got good solid bass response, it's a wonderful thing. I'll also try to remember to disconnect that cap from the crossover, I'm curious as to what that might sound like, as well.

Ugh, I can only imagine how loud that was.. I've got a pair of Altec 1233s sitting in my living room hooked up to a 200w/ch receiver, when I do crank it up, the most it ever sees is 10 watts average (at least, on the meters anyway).. Cranking a pair of La Scalas per side, on 600W monoblocks, that's just nutty. No wonder he damaged his hearing. My neighbor's about the same way. He's got a pair of JBL L300s, hooked them up to a 200w/ch Dynaco and was trying to find the amp's limits. Couldn't for fear of torching something in the JBLs. Way louder than I can stand over more than a few seconds. That amp's a pretty hefty item..

TBrennan, Thanks! The 210 splits sure are beauties. Quite an impressive looking thing, too. I saw a pair of full 210s on eBay a couple weeks ago, guy wanted $550. That'd be a deal considering how much it would cost in wood to replicate even one of those monsters.

C26 and 2105 and you're complaining? I'm driving the Klipschs with an ole Sony receiver, and the main stereo is a big Kenwood that is powerful (200wpc) but doesn't really sound all that great. I'm gonna get rid of it for McIntosh gear one of these days.. Maybe Mac preamp and some kinda tube amp. Would say some Cornwalls too but I want Klipschorns.

Would it be convincing if I told you the Heresy was a horrid speaker that's not worth having and you should just uhhhhh give them to me...? Heh heh. I'll ensure that they are properly, um, dealt with.. Yeah! Hey, stop laughing. I'd kill for a pair of walnut Heresys. Pretty speakers.

JonM, Nope.. The 2213 hasn't been made in awhile, I don't believe. You can usually find a pair on ebay for around $150 to $200 a pair. I bought mine from a guy on there with the username "jblken", he did a fantastic job of packing them and shipping, good guy. Look for 2213s, or the 123A. It's the same woofer, just the 123A went in the home version of the 4311 monitor, the L100. It's difficult to mistake this woofer, though. I was lucky enough that my neighbor had a pair sitting around and he let me try them out. Not too long after that, I went on ebay and bought a pair, been really pleased with them. Just make sure the grilles stay on all the time if you have pets, as the surround is very tacky.

TBrennan, I can't wait to hear it, myself. He got the woofers for them a couple weeks ago, 515Bs. Very nice. I've listened to the 288s on the horns before, they sound awesome. Distortion free. Makes me want a pair. Haven't seen the site on the 210 split but I'd be interested.

I hawk this all the time, but here goes... I did the same thing to get better LF response out of my '85 Heresys. The enclosure measures out to around 1.78 cu. ft. minus the displacement of the drivers and crossover. I used the woofer from a JBL L100 (actually the 4311, it's a model 2213.. Same driver as a 123A though), and the Heresys have great bass now. They're not 20 Hz rumblers but they go into the 30s, and sound quite clean to me. They won't match the output of my Altecs but they'll get on up there. It was a worthwhile mod, by far.. I have $180 in the woofers, sold off the K-22s that were there because I didn't want em any more. I used a little long fiber material to fill the cabinets with, as well. Also cut some strips of thin foam to put around where the back of the cabinet screws down so it seals a little better. Keep in mind JBL has used an ack-basswards way of wiring them for awhile. Positive to the BLACK terminal drives the diaphragm forward. All in all it worked great. The white cone / black dust cap looks pretty cool peeking out of there, too. Another woofer I tried that I had good luck with was a Speakerlab W1208R. Those are hard to find, but it sounded good to me. I'm gonna try to send a picture of them.

Those are definitely cinema speakers, I don't think Klipsch made anything like that for home usage. I don't know how they sound, but too much depends on your definition of the word. My neighbor's going a similar route, he'll be building an Altec 210 chopped in half (exponential bass horn), using 311-60s w/288 drivers for the midrange, and Electrovoice St-350 tweeters. It's going to be ridiculous. Those big Klipschs will blister. You want home theater, you'll get home theater. heheh.

I've seen the inside of the K-77 tweeter (electrovoice T-35).... The voice coil doesn't have a former, so if you're not careful putting it back together you can crunch that. I believe some models had basically the lead off the coil going to the terminals and that was later beefed up (due to the lead in wire frying before the coil got all that toasty).

That polyswitch is there for a reason, though, so be careful.. If the tweeter stops now it's not gonna come back.

I believe that big monster sitting between the four La Scalas is a Klipsch cinema subwoofer, W folded horn with either a pair of 15" woofers or 18" woofers.. can't remember, but I believe it's 15s. Those things are huge. Look under Klipsch's commercial section at the cinema stuff, their biggest speakers have a bass bin like that. Edit... You could probably jam that setup in the living room and stick the TV on top of the sub. That is, if you have a spouse that will not murder you in the middle of the night for bringing it all in. If you pulled that off, you could probably blow yourself out of the house with it though... The efficiency of that group of speakers is probably in the neighborhood of 107 db 1W/1M.. ouch. I've got a Sony DE line receiver... Not all that impressed with it but the ES stuff is likely better. The DE doesn't have enough power supply in it. My old 50 WPC Technics has a bigger transformer and this thing's supposed to do 100x5. I also have a pair of the cheap Sony speakers.. For what they are, they're not that bad. I think I have maybe $150 in the pair. Was the first speakers I bought when I got into audio, along with the aforementioned receiver. I actually looked at Klipsch stuff in a store near me, and probably would have bought Synergy towers and some kinda receiver from them, but the sales staff was arrogant. So, I went with the Sony and was pretty happy with it. Next pair of speakers was my Heresys though. I love em, worth every penny.

Top of the line should be around 110 db/W with frequency response from at least 16 Hz to 20,000 Hz, maybe 25k.. With an uncompromised basshorn. And 1000W power handling. And it should sound better than any speaker in existence. Har har har. So, it'd have to be delivered to you on two semis, and you'd have to build something the size of another house off of the listening room to contain the bass horns.. No big deal!

I didn't replace the wire in there, although that's an idea. Maybe eventually, working on the Altecs at the moment. I'd kinda like to build a new crossover for them from nicer parts, too. Got too many projects going at once, so that'll have to wait. The Heresys look pretty nice with the JBLs in there. Oiled birch with that black baffle and a white cone peeking out. Pretty sweet.

Manuel- I love my Heresys! I agree on the lack of bass response, though. I remedied the problem by changing the woofer. I used a JBL 123A (the white coned ones you see in the old L100s). Not just a small improvement in LF response. They won't go all the way to 20 Hz but they extend much farther than they did. I don't consider myself an audiophile, but the bass sounds quite good on the JBL driver. So now I have the sound of the Heresys that I love, plus way better low frequency extension. Maybe I should have just told you they're junk, and you should give them to me.

Heh.. since we're divulging all our gear, I'll chip in. '85 Klipsch Heresys that I modified. Replaced the woofer with a JBL 2213 (123A.. from the L100/4311s). Some people might think I'm off my rocker for it, perhaps, but I'm happy with the sound. Better bass extension and still tight. Speakerlab Threes, Altec 1233s (big). Soon to be Klipschorns. Don't know where the big Altecs will end up, they sure won't fit in the living room w/cornerhorns. Maybe rear surrounds.. Maybe computer speakers!

Ahhh, the joys of UPS. They've destroyed many an item, no doubt, my neighbor's had several things trashed. Someone else I know had his Heresys UPS'd, they got mangled in transit, my neighbor's had a pair of Altec 288s thrashed, some Speakerlab Sixes lost a midrange horn.. the Sixes were boxed up really well, with "This side up!" marked all over it, as well as 'Fragile, electronic equipment". Guess what happens? The dropped the box on it's TOP. Hard enough to go through several inches of packing material and crunch the corner of the speaker cabinet itself, too. The mid-range horn, which is braced from below but not from the top, promptly shattered, and the heavy driver rattled around in the enclosure for who knows how long while it was on it's way, smashing the crossover. Tweeter fell out of the cabinet, too. Gotta love em. As for USPS, I haven't had much bad luck with them, thankfully. I got a Kenwood KR-9050 receiver off ebay, and after much wrangling to get the moron to send it, it showed up USPS.. the mail man (poor guy) set it in the living room, and I knew it was packed horribly when I heard the solid thunk which was the receiver hitting the floor. Opened the box, 1" foamboard on top, 1" on bottom, NOTHING anywhere else, not even newspaper! If UPS had sent it, the knobs would have been stripped off the faceplate. Needless to say that guy got bad feedback.

I made a mod to my Heresy 1's, to improve low frequency response, as they sound more like a minimonitor than a loudspeaker with a good-sized woofer in my opinion. Used a JBL 123-A woofer (mine is actually a 2213, same driver).. might have to fiddle around with the tone control a little, but the LF response is much improved. Might sacrifice a little on power handling, but they get pretty damn loud and I haven't noticed any problems. As for where to get the 123 if you want to try that (the white cone/black dust cap looks cool as hell sitting in there!), I found mine on ebay. I tried this with a Speakerlab W-1208R before, too, which was fantastic, but alas, the drivers were not mine and I had to give them back. Really authoritative though, they had major slam to them, no need for a subwoofer at all. Good luck finding 1208Rs though.

Heh.. you ought to see the inside of a large format Altec driver. Not just popping the cap off it, and removing the voice coil/fram assembly, but taking the top plate off that puppy and all. Neighbor had to do that to one because it got slammed so hard by 'oops' (UPS) that it knocked the top plate over. Very very difficult getting that friggin' thing off due to the magnet's strength. I'd get pictures but I doubt he's willing to take it back apart.

Ahhhh I just remembered a speaker that qualifies for the absolute worst, over the Sonys. Pair of old Winthrop (I think) speakers mom found somewhere. I'd been given a Technics SA-404 receiver, and needed speakers. Well, crap doesn't describe it. they just plain sounded like hell. Blargh. I'm ashamed to admit I had them! The Technics, on the other hand, I'm not ashamed to admit I have... I like this little old receiver.

Yep.. BobO is right. The Heresy's a sealed enclosure, with non-horn loaded front firing 12" woofer. I did the measurements of the cabinet before, and the internal volume came out to be about what the Speakerlab likes. I did it at the suggestion of my neighbor, who's been doing this stuff most of his life, so I figure he knew it wouldn't hurt the woofer All in all, it sounds great, I'm impressed. Now I gotta find a pair of 1208Rs
