  1. Sorry Jobman, I misread your post. I thought you had made all of those changes at the same time. My bad.
  2. It is interesting that you made so many upgrades at once. I have done that before and I didn't know what each tweak or upgrade changed. I now only do one upgrade or tweak at a time and then listen extensively to really hear what has changed in the sound, if any. If one actually isn't as good as before, I can change it back and try something else. It's kind of like putting a new cart and new phono pre into a system at once. Which one is making the biggest difference? Anyway Jobman, I hope your system is killer when you get done. Steve
  3. Here is a cartridge database started last year by Ed on the AudioAsylum. It isn't complete, but I can't imagine the amount of effort one man has put into this site. If you enjoy vinyl, it's definately worth putting in your favorites. http://www.cartridgedb.com/ Steve
  4. Thats great Steve. I am glad they turned out to be something you wanted. Steve
  5. LOL After looking, I see these are the same ones Thebes showed below that are listed on CL. Oh well, this guy is getting some exposure amoung the Klipschies.
  6. I saw this tonight and thought someone here might be interested. I am not affiliated in anyway. I am not sure of the going price for LaScala's, but thought this sounded reasonable. Especially if someone can meet his trade offer. I think he is in the DC area. http://audiokarma.org/ads/showproduct.php?product=1151&sort=1&cat=21&page=1
  7. If you have never heard your efficient horn speakers with good tube amplification, I think you haven't really heard your speakers in all their glory. So, what are you gonna get? You know it's only a matter of time before you have to hear it for yourself.
  8. I play mostly vinyl. Mostly 60's and early 70's rock, early blues and jazz. I have a few different carts that I rotate from time to time. Goldring 1042, Denon 110, AT440ML and Shure Type III. My turntable is a modded Thorens TD160 with a Linn Basik arm. Nothing exotic, but it sounds pretty darn good.
  9. tubes, I bet that Klipsch/Altec combo will sound great. The folks on the Altec site are not as numerous as here on the Klipsch site, but give them time. They know Altecs like you Klipsch folks know your stuff. It just takes longer for them to chime in. They have helped me alot with my Altecs. As a matter of fact, one of them that lived about an hour south of me drove up and checked out my speakers for me (on his own dime) spent the day with me (I treated for lunch) and he even did some repairs on a couple of spare diaphrams for me. He also did a small mod that took the HF SHOUT out of them. They really sound awesome now, especially since I got my tube Mc's. God, I love horns.
  10. Dave, thanks for the offer, but I live in Joplin, the complete opposite side of the state. You are about 4.5 hours away. Have you ever heard 604's?
  11. Congrats on the Mac. I have a pair of MC40 monoblocks hooked up to my Altec 604's and it is a great match. I am sure your Mc and Khorns will be nothing short of audio heaven. I imagine folks here probably wonder why a person who doesn't own Klipsch drops in on a Klipsch site. I guess we all are lovers of horns. I am curious about the difference in the sound between Altec 604's and Khorns. Anyone heard both to compare? I do see several who use some Altec horns along with their Klipsch. Not meant to hijack, just running off at the mouth. Steve
  12. My wife of 26 years is not a music lover. She watches TV continuosly. I have a small dedicated music room that is my room. She never says a thing about any of my stuff or how I have it decorated. It is nice because I can listen to music anytime I want, at even relatively high volumes. If I had to have my system in the living room, I am sure there would be problems. But we seem to have a living situation that works well for us. When I run across equiptment or software that I want, I just bring them home and they go into my room. I have never asked permission, as then she would expect her permission given everytime I wanted something. Which over time would lead to resentment from me, for giving her the power of making the decisions. And resentment from her, if I did something that she said she didn't want me to do. LOL Does that make any sense?[]
  13. Wow, excellent score there Mark. You did well. But don't you feel guilty? Just think of the old lady who took those to auction. Maybe your bid should have been $500 instead of $5.[] Seriously, good score. I am looking forward to hearing your impression.
  14. Those pics sure are disappointing. You can't hardly see any detail of the speakers. I don't know how much they will be, but I do know they will be out of my price range. But a burger and fries is out of my price range right now.
  15. There ya go Duke. And I don't see why anyone should have a problem with what you enjoy. I know I don't. If it is music, I am all for it. I play vinyl and CD and enjoy both. It is the music I am after. I don't understand people who crap all over someone elses choice. It seems kind of childish to me.
  16. I have little doubt that cartridge would sound awesome in a comparable system. That would not be my system. But to most folks, Klipsch speakers aren't worth their price either. THey are happy with their little Bose cubes, portable jam box or MP3 player. I guess it is for each person to decide how they spend their money and which medium they prefer. I also don't think that anyone that would spend that much on a cartridge would be a Klipsch owner. The most expensive 2 channel system that someone has mentioned they own (on another audio site) was $385,000. He might have one of those. I know he didn't own any speakers that any of us own. Is he wrong for owning such a cartridge? I take it this thread is an extension of analog vs. digital?
  17. There is analog done well. There is digital done well. There is analog done poorly. There is digital done poorly. I prefer just listening to music, not the medium.
  18. Let me help shed some light on your SEEMING doubt. His offer is criminally low, and is something on par with what you'd expect a Pawn Shop to offer. Is there anything wrong with praying on the ignorant, well, to this degree no. But it does say quite alot about his moral values and character. I don't agree, criminally low would be $100 or less. I would say his offer would be wholesale price. Just because you wouldn't sell yours for that price does not make him a criminal. I still don't see as it should be of any concern to folks here. It is between him and any potential sellers. I agree it is a lowball offer, but it's no sweat to me. Let Corvette fill up his house with speakers at bargin prices, I don't have a problem with it.
  19. I don't see what the problem is. He is offering to buy some Klipsch speakers, at what seems to be cheap prices. He made his offer, so it will be up to a possible seller if they want to contact him and acept his offer. I have enough problems taking care of my own business, let along sticking it in someone elses. JMO
  20. meagain, I have that album on vinyl and have played it several times. I don't ever remember hearing any sibilence but will listen again this weekend and see. It is rather a dark album, but I enjoy it alot. Especially late in the evening, lights down low and sitting by the glow of the tubes. I really enjoy listening to music with very little light. It seems to cut down on visual distractions and brings the music more to life. Veird huh?
  21. Vinyl vs. CD? I will put it this way, my Lp collection is around 6,000 and my CD collection about 50. I guess that puts me in the vinyl camp. But I do occasionally play a CD or 2. I really don't care what format a person enjoys. It's a personal choice and I can see both sides.
  22. Chris, other than email, I suggest you just call them and speak with Bill. He is a nice fella and can fill in all the details of cost, etc. I don't have his number handy, but you can find it on GPA's website. I bought a replacement diaphram for one of my 604's and it totaled $96 with shipping. Not sure what they are for others. -Steve
  23. Gary, sounds like a good deal. I use a modded Thorens 160 and it does pretty well for the investment. Looks like a good selection of Lp's too. If I lived closer I would make an offer, but local pickup is a deal killer. Hopefully someone here will take the plunge.
  24. Maron, what part of MO. do you live? I live in the SW corner and just wondered if we were close. -Steve
  25. I don't have a meter either to check, but I listen most of the time and pretty low levels. Judging from the charts provided on page 1 of this thread I would guess about 75-80 db. When I have company come over for listening, I would guess probably around 90 max. I try to protect my hearing as much as possible. I ain't getting any younger.
