  1. Mark, I got mine strickly for WRR (and KNON sometimes). KHYI and KNTU don't broadcast HD, nor does KERA. The new KXT ("Hipster 91.7") doesn't either, but their regular signal is so horribly compressed it's unlistenable (to me), and HD wouldn't solve that problem. Some of the mainstream stations have interesting alternate channels (an all Las Vegas Lounge Music station is one example) that are fun. P.M.
  2. 1) I second the Bob Crites endorsement. 2) I had an "X" like that.
  3. Mike clearly addresses the short-comings of the unit, but right out of the box it's an amazing little device. It's a shame Sony hasn't done a better job with its packaging, but I suppose the market isn't there. Be warned if you get one: A) It runs hot. It stinks to high heaven for the first few hours (I finally believe in "burn in"). A very good discussion of it here.
  4. Heavenly Father, I give you thanks that your servant Tom has left ICU. Thank you, father, for the skilled hands and minds that you brought to bear to assist in his recovery. To your glory, thank you for the healing that the doctors can not explain, for the series of "coincidences" that reveal your work. We lift up Tom's friends and his family to you, that they may be given rest from their worries and blessed assurance in you. In your son's name and to your glory. Amen.
  5. You might want to sell the Onkyo gear (which is good stuff... I have some). The NAD's sound signature is Northern European (if such a thing exists), while the Onkyo's sound is different.
  6. I love my little 7140 int amp, but it isn't transparent... it's dark grey (which I suppose sorta looks transparent when the lights are off at night). ;-)
  7. I was Hoping to attend again, but my probation officer only lets me travel to neighboring states.
  8. That was only because of food crumbs and finger prints on the LPs. Good changers (ELAC, Dual, some Garrards, with the three-point spindle) won't harm LP surfaces, as only the labels come into contact with each other (and the very outside lip of the LP rim). LPs were (and still are) designed to be stacked. LP damage was a result of careless handling on the part of the record changee, not the record changer.
  9. Kind of an odd-shaped room. 14 x 22', but there's a big notch at 16' (really 14x22/10), and large hallway openings along both long walls, so the Ks go along the short wall. They sound great.
  10. Go ahead and contact Bob Crites about freshening the crossovers. $85 +/- for his AA kit. Your caps are off spec, I guarantee it. Get the AAs running right before you do anything else. And congratulations!
  11. I answered a CL ad for a BOTL Marantz turntable because it had a Shure V15-III cart for $70. I loved the V15-III I had prior to "The Great Disappointment of 1984", and have wanted another. Seemed like a good opportunity. The ad showed a bunch of jazz albums laying around the deck, and mentioned he had 110 albums for sale for $60, as he had just transferred all his LPs to digital. I offered him $120 for the whole shebang. He responded that he already had a buyer for the LPs, but he had some more if I was interested. Bottom line: $120, Marantz TT4000, Shure V15-III, and 120 jazz and pop LPs, in Fair to VG condition, including lots of first pressings from Verve, Impulse, and Pacific Jazz. I have not cataloged them yet, but here's a few of interest (with online prices as appropriate for condition and issue). SIDE BY SIDE, $50 Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges plus others Verve mono YELLOW SUBMARINE (first edition) The Beatles Apple VALLEY OF THE MOON, $55 Lovecraft Reprise BLONDE ON BLONDE (first edition?) Bob Dylan Columbia 2-eye BECHET-SPANNIER QUARTET, $45 Sidney Bechet and Muggsy Spanier Allegro-Elite GERRY MULLIGAN QUARTET, $50 Gerry Mulligan, Chet Baker, Chico Hamilton, Bob Whitlock Pacific Jazz LP# 1 JAZZTONE SOCIETY JAZZ SAMPLER, $40 Sidney Bechet, Charlie Parker, Red Norvo, Art Tatum, Coleman Hawkins, Jack Teagarden, Erroll Garner, Woody Herman Jazztone ANYTHING GOES!, $20 The Dave Brubeck Quartet Columbia 6-eye JAZZ RED HOT AND COOL, $40 The Dave Brubeck Quartet Columbia 6-eye mono THE NEW SOUND, $40 10" Les Paul Capitol There's some dreck, too, but I think I came out ahead.
  12. Ohhh, she loves the sound... and she loves me. But the K-Horns? Not yet.
  13. I don't get it. Maybe you just weren't using enough Bourbon.
  14. Why yes I did! I believe it was LP #3 (After Bathing at Baxter's, then Gary Burton's Dreams So Real, and then Hand of Kindness).
  15. Of all the mainstream consumer electronics companies, Yamaha has probably done the best job of maintaining their quality over the years and avoiding the BPC malaise. I've got (and use) a CR-1020, CR-1000 (my fav), and a CA-2010 (in addition to my Mac SS gear and Fisher and Scott tubes). They are all fanatastic, although it's about time for the 1020 to visit the doctor. I also have a mid '90s Yamaha A/V integrated amp (can't remember the model). It's currently running Cornwalls in my "home theater" (2.1 set-up currently, although the amp will do 4.1), and it sounds really good. So, back to your question: The M-60 and M-64 amps are great. Go for it. And I will disagree with some of the posts here. Too much modern consumer gear has not consistantly retained high-fidelity quality sound. The marketplace has promoted gear with a very "forward" mid-range, and big bias in low frequencies, to match changing consumer tastes in compressed program material. Yamaha's dedication to "Natural Sound" is real, and unique among consumer brands. A happy disclaimer: I have heard a few examples of amps using tri-path chips, and they are very impressive sounding, starting with the cheapo Sonic Impact T-Amp, and going upwards to more serious products. This technology has been a bright spot.
