  1. May I humbly suggest the fairly recently released "The Mirror Man Sessions". The Magic Band's second album (or demos for) that went unreleased for a couple of decades. Gives us a hint of what "Strictly Personal" could have been.
  2. While I'm thinking about Gary Burton, this may be my favorite recording of his. Compositions by Carla Bley (mostly). Dreams So Real Audio CD Number of Discs: 1 Label: Ecm Records ASIN: B00000DTEG
  3. Like Minds Audio CD (November 3, 1998) Label: Concord Records ASIN: B00000DGXN Gary Burton, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, Roy Haynes and Dave Holland: "a no-frills, straight-ahead jazz album, crisply recorded, full of energy and imagination."
  4. Music of the Baroque era doesn't get much better than when it's handled by Jordi Savall, either as a player or a director. Composer: Marin Marais Performer: Jordi Savall Label: Alia Vox Audio CD (November 11, 2003) ASIN: B00009OOIA
  5. The MMC6000 I bought a couple weeks ago was advertised as an MMC4000. It came in an MMC4000 box, complete with brush, scales, little B&O screwdriver, and spec sheet (and two little noses...and the plastic cover). When I inspected it, lo and behold it was the 6000. The 4000 case obviously came from a replacement. I've got a pretty good MMC 20S as well. Not sure why.
  6. Cal, I picked up a spare Beogram 1700 WITHOUT cart for $20 on ePay. I grabbed it for spare parts for my 1700. The dust cover was MUCH nicer than mine, so I swapped it out. Picked up a used MMC 6000 last week whose nose guard had come off for $28. The stylus and sapphire cantilever were in great shape, so I glued the nose back on and it's an IMPRESSIVE cart... sounds better than my MMC 20CL (which was top of the line). I love my Beogram, and it's been a good and faithful servant for 23 years. Now I've two of the beauties. Danish DJ?
  7. A big "Second!" to this selection. ...and a plug for his first "big hit", Drumming. Composer: Steve Reich Performer: Bob Becker, James Preiss, et al. Label: Deutsche Grammophon Audio CD Number of Discs: 2 ASIN: B0000D7Z63
  8. Care-Charming Sleep The Dowland Project/John Potter CD ECM New Series Classical/Early Music (with saxophone!) Stunning recording, brilliant performances. Hybrid of early music and jazz sensibilities.
  9. "Are old Klipsch speakers such as heresy, La scala, kg4. etc good for modern music?" -- Yes (the key word being "music"). "Their drivers are made of paper... isn't that not as good as stuff they use in speakers today?" -- Proper speaker design and construction must be taken as a whole... it's not a matter of just screwing drivers into boxes. Taken as a whole, paper cones in enclosures designed for them work just as well as poly/carbon/saran-wrap/tin-foil cones in enclosures designed for them. Mixing new drivers with old boxes doesn't work any better than old drivers in new boxes. Again, taken as a whole. "Is the bass good on those paper speakers?" -- Yes. Part of the issue I think you are addressing is the segment of contemporary pop music that has no basis in natural sound. An electronically realized sound that never had life as a physical vibration in the atmosphere, but only lives as a digital signal until it is fed through a speaker to become a "sound", has no basis in objective "reality". Who knows what it's supposed to sound like? It's conceivable that a totally artificial sound might sound "better" played through a speaker that itself has no foundation in acoustic reality. This is not a value judgment, merely an observation of a changing world. As someone who values live performances of acoustic music, and electronically amplified and modified acoustic music, I find the larger Heritage line hard to beat. Even some early electronic music sounds best (to me) through K-Horns and LaScalas, perhaps because they do a better job of reproducing the sound the composer/performer heard through the monitors he/she (literally in one pioneer's case) used both in the studio and in performance. Good question.
  10. Thanks. Cats are great gifts of God in my book (as is all of Creation). And yes, Bob's animation link is cute fun.
  11. Finally, my daughter Cat, the best of the cats.
  12. Back from cancer surgery. Given six months, she's still with us (and enjoying life) 18 months later.
  13. Ohio Express "Yummy yummy yummy, I've got love in my tummy." I'm a peaceful man, but this song causes me to get the shotgun down and chamber a round.
  14. Here's Molly enjoying her jalapeno/chicken tamale. The Jalapenos didn't phase her, as she actually likes spicy food.
  15. Worst song ever? It's a constantly moving target. But an easy hit is to just turn on a commercial radio station. Five will get you ten that the "worst song ever" will be playing at that instant. PS: Yes, I know there are exceptions in the "Land of Clear Channel", but not very many of them.
  16. Which model TEAC are you suggesting? I've heard a couple of recommendations, but I haven't seen anything specific.
