I used ¾ cabinet grade oak plywood for the sides and ¾ mdf for the bottoms. I didnt want any visible screws, so I glued the 2 sides together, used corner brackets on the inside and screwed the bottoms on from underneath.

First of all, let me say here that I AM NOT a woodworker. I am a mechanic (car guy) by trade and I do not like working with wood. But, sometimes, like it or not, you gotta do what you gotta do. When I acquired my 95 OO Khorns a year or so ago, I knew that I didnt have any usable corners in the living room (great room) where I wanted them to be, so false corners was the only way to go. I did a lot of research on the forum regarding false corners and obtained a lot of useful information. I had very little extra space to work with, so the corners could not be huge. Also, I regarded my Khorns as absolutely beautiful and I didnt want to ugly them up with ugly false corners. Not to mention the WAF. The best version of false corners I saw was Tigerwoodkhorns. His looked exactly like what I wanted mine to look like, so I set out to attempt to replicate his design. I also decided that I didnt want to mutilate my Khorns with screws or anything that would permanently scar them, just in case I ever wanted to go back to original. Shortly after I completed the false corner project I upgraded my Khorns with ALKs ES networks, Trachorns and JBL 2404 tweeters, so now I have what is referred to as Super Khorns. How do they sound? How do you think they sound? They sound awesome! They are truly the ultimate sound experience..this side of heaven.

I appreciate the invite Indy, and I really would like to experience your HT system some day, but not tonight, as I am about a thousand miles away. I mentioned the HD thing because since Jacksonville is a relatively small market, most of the Jaguar games are broadcast in SD, which sucks. It'll be a real treat to see them in HD tonight. GO JAGS !!!!!!!!!!! PS: There's a good chance it'll still be raining here tonight. I hope that spoils Peyton's day....LOL

I really believe that our Jacksonville Jaguars will hand Peyton & his Colts their first loss tonight. If that happens, the Jags will start getting some of the respect, nationally, that they deserve, along with first place in the AFC South. If it doesn't happen, at least the game will be in HD!

Thanks for the info DrWho. I had a feeling you would respond to this. I was thinking pretty much the same thing, that they wouldn't be the best choice in the world for a sub. I have Khorn mains, cornwall surrounds & a rsw-12 sub. I don't need another sub, the rsw-12 does fine, I just had the k-48's & was trying to figure out what to do with them. I guess I will probably just sell them instead. Do you have a recommendation for a center channel speaker? I would like to stick with all heritage, but am limited on space. I was thinking of maybe hanging a heresy from the ceiling, any thoughts?

I have 2 brand new 15 Klipsch K-48 woofers that I understand were commonly used in the Chorus II line. Does anybody know if these would be good as subwoofer drivers? Im considering using them in a DIY subwoofer project, but not sure if that would be a good idea for these. Also Im not sure where I would get the remaining components if I did pursue the project. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. If I dont pursue the sub project, I will probably sell them on ebay unless someone here is interested in them.

Interesting!! I see what the problem is. I'm probably not running into problems for two reasons; first is because the signal is being treated as an analog signal (my choice... sounds fine to me...), and the CCC-222 has an auto "track separator" that senses the source drop below a certain threshold and simply goes to the next track when the threshold comes back. Took me forever to get it right, but when I get finished with a CD, I just go back and slect the tracks I want to keep, etc. I use more CD's, but the only other option for me is, unless I'm really quick and have paused the unit at the end of a song off XM, I can easily lose the first second off the front end. When I'm doing that, I use the "fader" feature so it's not really noticeable. But I can see where you would get really upset by not being able to record digitally straight out via the DVR. There is another possibility for you; does your TV have an "out" set of jacks or an "out" HDMI slot? You could try running the DVR from those instead of the direct off the back of the DTV receiver. That might help because it might strip that coding? In both my case with Dish, and my father's with Direct, the DVR is built into the proprietary HD satellite receiver as one unit, so that wouldn't work. I just think that "XM" is really strict about how their music is being used (or recorded). With just the standard satellite receiver installation, the DirectTV digital XM music is only going to operate like a standard radio. The user has no control over it whatsoever. This is where Dish beats Direct hands down. I just hope that Dish & Sirrius doesn't do the same thing as XM in the future. Whoops, maybe I shouldn't had said anything, I hope there aren't any Dish or Sirrius people on the forum here.

What I was referring to was the ability to record digital music from DirectTV's music channels to a DVR unit. It is because of the "buffering" feature of a DVR unit that you can pause and rewind a live TV broadcast. Most DVR's can backtrack (rewind) up to an hour. With DirectTV this feature is totally blocked out for the music channels, but functions perfectly with Dish Network. Here's an example of how I use this feature with Dish: With a satellite digital music channel playing, a song comes on that I really like so I grab the remote, back-up (rewind) the song to just before it starts and then record it onto the hard drive of the DVR unit. From there I can listen it anytime I want or copy it to another media source. You cannot do this with Direct TV. Whenever you are tuned to a digital music channel on Direct TV the record, pause & rewind features not functional. I can only assume that this is a music licensing / copyright thing why this feature is blocked. DirectTV uses "XM" satellite music and Dish uses "Sirrius". I just wanted to clarify that to anyone who would be upset about the lack of that feature of DirectTV before they sign a 2 year contract. My father did, and he's not happy about it, and I almost made the same mistake. As I said before, that was a deal breaker for me. Hope this information is useful to someone.

I have had Dish Network for many years. My father has DTV & I was almost convinced of switching to DTV also since they had some local channels in HD (and Dish doesn't) but then I found out that you can't record the music channels on DTV like you can on Dish. Not only can you record all the digital quality music on Dish, but you can also back it up (rewind) and start recording at the beginning of a song that you hear come on that you like. You can't do that with DTV. That was the biggest deal breaker for me.

RTTR, Just curious, considering your avatar, why would you recommend the Harmon Kardon over the NAD? Because of the higher power? Also, I checked out onecall.com on the Harmon & the current price is $1150.

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for an A/V receiver for under $1000. This would be used in a Home Theater set-up with Khorn mains, Cornwall rears & a sub. I was thinking of a NAD T753. Any suggestions?

I just recently finished modding my '95 Khorns. I started with false corners, which I will be posting details and pics of later. Then I got Al's AP12-AK3 & ES5800 networks. Big improvement overall. Next, I got Al's Trachorns & used the existing K55 drivers with them. Norah Jones' piano sounds like it's right in my living room! Last of all, I replaced the K77's with JBL2404's. Big improvement. Yes, these mods were fairly costly, but worth it. My Khorns sound great!

For me, looks are definately an issue. The wife would never allow me to stick tweeters on top of the speaker cabinet. The trachorn motor board, which is built to the original Klipsch / k400 motorboard size & dimensions, only allows you to mount the tweeter to the side of the trachorn.

If that's the case, wouldn't the soundstage be an inch wider if the midranges went on the outside if they do most of the work?? Would you not want them as far apart as possible? Thanks for the response Coytee, Those are my thoughts exactly. I have been pondering this for awhile now. I have just installed my first trachorn & currently have the tweeter on the outside. I will install the second one in the next couple of days and do some listening tests. In my case, I also have false corners so there is not an easy way to just swap these things around and listen to it both ways. Not to mention that by the time I swapped them around I would probably not be able to accurately remember how it sounded the other way unless there was a radical difference. I was really hoping somebody with experience on this matter would chime in and offer some guidance.

Currently I'm using an average Sony receiver in my Home Theater set-up. I listen to a fairly broad range of music. Mostly comtempory jazz, some classical & some rock. I listen to it as loud as my wife will tolerate it. As you may already know the AP12-AK3 network replaces the original AK-3 with the exception of keeping the lower bass bin section of it intact. I'm sure either Al or his website could give you more details.

Over the weekend I installed the new crossovers that Al K just built for me. WOW !!! What a difference! I got the AP12-AK3 & the ES5800 crossovers. I did one khorn at a time and did an AB (left / right) comparison after the first one was installed. I have to say I'm very impressed & pleased with the results. I thought my khorns already sounded great before the crossover upgrade, but I couldn't believe how much better they could sound. The bass response was much improved, so much so that I could turn my subwoofer off. The entire sound was much "tighter", cleaner & precise. I am currently using all original drivers. Thanks Al, great job! I am waiting for my Trachorns to arrive any day now. I will be installing them along with JBL 2404 tweeters. I'll post my impressions of that upgrade soon.

Okay , My ALK Trachorns are soon too arrive . Should the tweeters go on the outside or inside?

Dr Who, I bought these K-48's off ebay. The guy originally had 9 of them, all new. I think he has 3 left.
