  1. what's the approximate costs to make a la scala? Oh yeah would you guys recommend using actual wood sheets or mdf and veneer it?
  2. So my mom really appreciates good quality sound. She doesn't want to pay out the HUGE bucks for la scalas or what not and I need something to do during summer. So I thought why not just make them. I'm not looking for much bass. Perhaps a 6.5" subwoofer or around there. I'm thinking about just using 2 horns and putting them in a box. I have not much knowledge about cross overs and such, but I did complete electro physics and I have soldering experience and such. I also took a shop class so I sort of know how to work with wood a bit. I'm looking to make book shelf speakers. Anyone have recommendations on how to start designing them or what not? Thanks.
  3. Oh yeah I'm using an HK-3380 receiver and soon to be sub-12. Could you guys also give me the plus and minus of both speakers? I will not but running any tube amps. I have a feeling that people will prefer the heresy and that'll piss me off. Lol the main reason will be because then I'll have to sell my RF-3's and buy heresy. I just hate how the RF-3's are so heavy. Oh yeah I listen to a lot of music that's bass heavy and not so much instrumental music. I don't know anyone that has heresy or know where they sell them so demoing would be impossible.
  4. Hey guys I was wondering how much difference in sound is there? I see them on ebay for about the same price as RF-3's. If they're only a little better I'll just stick with what I have, if not. I guess I'll sell the rf-'s and get the herseys.
  5. http://cgi.ebay.com/Klipsch-Reference-Series-package-Sunfire-Sub-NR_W0QQitemZ9729012814QQcategoryZ61378QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem check it out
  6. You know, when ever I talk to people, they always mention bose because it's such a well known brand. It's like comparing honda to subaru, west coast. Most people will prefer to buy honda any day over subaru because it's very well known and it does work very well. Subaru is grea too. I also think that Bose has really nice advertisements that makes it look very classy and appeal more towards the fashionably minded. Their products look really cool and sound good. Klipsch isn't as well known, but I prefer their sound over bose. My dad was a JBL and BOSE lover, I'm a Klipsch lover. I suppose I just love the brightness of music. And btw I believe people like to crack on bose a lot because Klipsch lovers have a lot of pride and focus more on the sound that the average bose listener. This is my opinion, not fact. Bose people, to me, seem a bit wealthier and care more about the style. Since the Klipsch fans are a lot smaller than the BOSE fans we have to compensate by belittling the other people. Take a really small guy and put him into a group of tall people in basketball. The little guy usually will be overly active to compensate for his size. Just my 2 cents.
  7. Gee I'll go borrow my friends camera and take a picture pretty soon. I'm going to buy the SUB-12 in about 3 weeks or so after I get my paycheck, but by then I'm going back home. My place isn't too cramped. It's a 9x12 room. Also I would NOT put this in my common room. My other suitemates don't lock the doors usually and plus I have a set of BOSE 501 series IV with an old onkyo receiver that does the job fine. It was quite funny when I came here. My friend was suppose to bring the TV and I was suppose to bring speakers, the bose, and he brought a 13" TV. It was pretty hilarous to see that until I finally bought a 27" tv. I do appreciate the spl's, but it's all about the quality. I was going to keep the 5.1 ultra's then upgrade the sat's to rsx-4's, but when I listend to them, then just didn't have the nice rich sound the RF class had. Oh I just had to share this story with everyone. So when my speakers finally arrived, they arrived at the farther package pick up location. It's roughly 1/4 mile away. Try hauling two RF-3's all that distance. Then on the way I dropped on and got a nice 1-.75 inch dent in the top of one speaker also the guy who shipped it didn't do a great job so all the pegs holding on the grill cracked off. But the speakers were in great condition.
  8. Right now I'm in the dorms so many these things really blast the sound out. When I first hooked up my receiver I couldn't hear it so I turned up the volume to +5dB and then I was wondering why I could barely hear it. Then I figured out that my receiver was on the Phono input instead of CD. So I clicked CD and CRAP I'm deaf. Oh yeah also I down turn up the music unless I'm at my friends place so I can hear it. It's generally at really low levels. I have it on whenever I study.... lol which is a lot. oh yeah on a side note. What equipment do you have Dr. Who? I noticed you have REALLY extensive knowledge about speakers and subs.
  9. Hey guys I'm running on Klipsch RF-3's Harman Kardon HK-3380 Klipsch sub-12 *I'm getting this one in a few weeks* My current room is 12x10 and holy crap I'm deaf, but at least I'm winning the speaker wars =)
  10. so no earthquakers daytons or whatever? Infinity ps12? hmm.. lol i don't know many that are in the same price range that aren't really bad
  11. I was wondering what other options are there that are around that price range and performance. I want my sub to go decently low like the sub-12.
  12. So this is listed on ebay for 239 shipped. Anyone heard this before? It looks like the other speakers that that person sells resembles the Theater Research stuff.
  13. oh yeah I had both of them right next to me, well at least as of a few weeks ago. My roommmate has the ifi's and i had the promedias. I ran a few tests and this is what I came up with. When I ran the ifi's on my sub, they sounded really close. I didn't try putting the promedia speakers on the ifi's, but I'm sure it would sound pretty good. When they are on their respective sub then you can hear a difference. The ifi's sound quite a bit better than my promedias. I got pissed because of this because I dropped $350 on these quite a while ago and my roommate dropped $200 for refurbs from ebay. So I went and bought reference speakers, and I won LOL. (just kidding about that part, but I do have reference speakers now).
  14. Well i'm going to be using this in my bedroom so that's like 15x12 or something along those lines. I do want some power, but my main focus is mostly quality. I heard that people prefer the sub-12 over the current rw-12 so i decided to throw out the rw-12. My price range isn't too good so I figure at max something a long the lines of $450 ish. I do not want to get a 10". My main reason for that is mostly because I believe most of the stuff I read was that the 10" don't go low enough. Right now I'm running some RF-3's and they seriously need some bass which heavily lacks in a lot of my music.
  15. Hey guys I wanted to know your opinion which one sounds best. I can't go out and hear speakers for a few reasons so I'm limited to buying these things blind. I have heard the sub-12 and I thought it sounded pretty good, but since it was hooked up to a very poor receiver I don't knwo it's full potential.
  16. Well what I did to find out all the numbering system was to read a bunch of junk in the forums, use the search button and look at the klipsch website. I have some info and I'll sort of post it here, it might be wrong, but I'll try to give you good information So RB= reference bookshelf speakers RF= reference floor speakers RC= reference center RS= reference surround The numbers seems kind of arbitrary to the speakers. Anyways here it goes RF-3 became RF-35 which became RF-82's 2 8" woofers 6" horn RF-7 didn't evolve from anything. 2 10" woofers 8" horn The RB-75's is like the RF-7 but only has 1 woofer The RB-35 is like the RF-35 but again only have 1 woofer. There's also the new stuff with 3 woofers such as the RF-63 and RF-83 and I don't know anything about those. Well that's a start for you.
  17. Hey guys what's a good glue, or replacement, for the RF-3's? I just got mine shipped here and they sound amazing. Too bad the grills are clinging on with 2 pegs or so each. I also dropped it while carrying it up to my room and made a nice 1 inch gash. I suppose the guy didn't know how to ship it, and I didn't know how to carry it properly lol.
  18. Hey guys I just got my RF-3's and damn they sound good. I'm using the TX-38 and I have no idea if this thing is a piece of crap, or it's decent. I don't have any manuals so I don't know anything about this receiver.
  19. I just saw this and decided I had to add info to this. I've owned 3 grey hounds for far and all of them toys. No room for the biggies. In my experience they seem a bit on the stupid side. This may be totally wrong and I may have just bought 3 stupid dogs in a row, but my other rat terrier would absolutely the sharpest dog I've seen. Anyways I remember on of my greyhounds took about a year or so to properly paper train him. That dog supposedly went to training school etc, so I don't know. I DO love greyhounds. They are so sleek and cool looking, although it seems they sacrified cranial capacity for aerodynamacy. Good look on a dog! Try concidering rat terriers.
  20. Perhaps go my route. I hate buying lower end things. I was concidering buying RSX-3's -4's and 5's, but in the end I decided to buy RF-3's. I bought them for $460 including shipping and insurance. As for a subwoofer I'm STILL trying to buy either an RW-12 or SUB-12 and as for receiver, I have no idea what to get still. I'm still looking around for used, B-stock or whatever I can get my hands on.
  21. ok i got one more question for which one would sound better. One enables me to use spdif the other is analog (I think). I just don't want to connect too much crap in fear of lowering the sound quality. http://www.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=13&subcategory=55&product=14309 or http://www.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=13&subcategory=55&product=1780
  22. I'm looking to buy a sub in about 3-5 weeks. I was looking at an RW-12 or SUB-12. Used of course. Thanks.
  23. lol I just need someone who owns an x-fi and knows how to connect it to a receiver. suggestions for a receiver would be nice too.
  24. Hey guys, I just bought the creative x-fi xtreme music version and I just realized there's not spdif connections on it. So how should I connect this to my sound system now? I didn't buy a receiver yet. I'm going for a 2.1 system. Umm... oh yeah there's a place to connect something that looks like an lcd monitor to it on the sound card. Geez... I feel kind of stupid. I didn't want to buy something cheap like teh Audigy 2 zs, but in retrospect it might have been bad. Thoughts guys?
  25. Man all this discussion. I ended up buying a pair of RF-3's for $460 shipped. They have no scratches or anything, but one of the stupid grill pegs broke off. I thought, that the RF-5's thec cheapest I can get it is around $650 ish. I heard that there is a difference, but not significantly. This is just to replace my 5.1 promedia since I realized I don't game or watch movies really, at least in 5.1 mode, I should just get a good 2.1 system. Also this is for a college dorm =) Speaker wars are pretty fun, but when I get these plus my sub, then it's over.
