  1. What are you using for a subwoofer?? If you're lacking punch, that is the first area you should re-evaluate. Your K-horns or whatever will have plenty of pizzass in the mid to upper ranges, but they wont cover the LFE in movie soundtracks. With the addition of a quality subwoofer, 'punch' will most definitely NOT be an issue. Treating room acoustics is also a very important aspect you should address before you spend more money replacing amps, speakers...etc, etc. Good luck...
  2. Sweet theater accessory!!! Something like that is fun for the visual and smells alone!! For those of you without the luxury of poppers, I highly recommend Pop Secret 'extra-butter'. Yummy!!!
  3. They're just quoting retail prices+. In fact, the retail price is $500.If you're serious about buying, you'll be able to negotiate lower, and you shouldnt have to pay more than $400 each for the 82s.
  4. I did, and he described the problem perfectly. He didnt screw up his calibration until after he started this thread and began experimenting. I believe the responses in this thread are leading this poor guy down the wrong path because none of the solutions offered address the real problem. I suspect many of you experience varying degrees of the same problem and dont even know it. Either that, or deny the problem all together. Not until you fix the room will you slap yourself on the forehead and be able to say....... "Wow, so that's how it's supposed to sound!!"
  5. I'd go with the 42s because it's an obvious upgrade over the 10s. If you can afford the 42s, get them[] If not, get the 10s.
  6. Placing the surround speakers in the green position is the 'standard' and recommended placement for surround speakers.
  7. Mildot, You made a wise choice.
  8. You have perfectly described a key signature of untreated room acoustics. To fix your problem, you'll need to treat and FIX YOUR ROOM. Check out gikacoustics.com to see they type of 'fix' Im talking about. Once you take care of the room, dialog will sound crystal clear, even while all hell is breaking loose in a loud scene. Not to mention better, tighter, cleaner bass.....etc, etc., etc........ Your days of fiddling with the volume during movies will be over[]

I was thinking the same thing. With a good sub, 'boom' isnt remotely close to how you would describe it's sound.

I think you're missing the point. You could have bought a cheapo $200 sub and if you set the gain too high, you're wife will still yell at you to turn it down. The difference between a properly calibrated low end sub & a better sub is that the better sub will sound better, cleaner, and go deeper. It's the same way with speakers. You could have bought a cheap pair of MTX boxes that would go plenty loud, but there are many reasons one might choose Klipsch as an alternative[]
  11. Ahhhhh.... Now you're headed in the correct direction. Enjoy the weekend!! You're going to have a blast with your new setup. Congrats!! Disregard my previous post..........LOL
  12. You are buying a 73", but can only budget $850 for your entire sound system?? My advice would be to hold off buying anything, until you have a larger budget for sound because a $850 "For everything" system wont be very good. Definitely not worthy of a 73"...... that's for sure.
  13. My recommendation would be to purchase one good subwoofer capable of doing the job. Calibrating one subwoofer correctly can be daunting enough let alone correctly dialing in 'duelling' subs. Not to mention, you'll get more SPL & deeper extension with a single biggun.
  14. Unfortunately, your problem is most likely related to room acoustic issues and unwanted room reflections providing you have already set your channel levels evenly. Your auto calibration function will be able to set channel levels close to where they need to be. Since you've already stated that you have taken that necessary step, purchasing a SPL meter and tweaking manually will not fix the above problem. In order to have crystal clear dialog during loud segments of movies, you'll need to fix your room reflection issues. Once you do, you'll be able to hear crystal clear dialog even while music is playing & while things are exploding all around in a scene. Cranking the center channel up in attempt to hear dialog better during loud segments will only throw your soundstage and imaging completely out of whack and it will destroy your surround soundfield. The problem you are describing is a textbook example of one of the many acoustic problems caused by an untreated room. Good Luck....
  15. I wouldnt swap out speakers. My suggestion would be to set your speakers to small during movies, and add an external amp to drive your mains. That should fix your problem in a jiffy. Good luck
  16. For HT purposes, BIGGER IS BETTER!! Get the largest screen managable for your room application. Otherwise, you'll second guess yourself later and wish you bought the bigger screen. In fact, dont rule out projectors if you can control ambient light. I wish I had shopped projecters before I bought my 65", because now I wish I had a 8'-10' screen......LOL Needless to say, the 65" will be the last TV I will ever buy for my theater room. I personally prefer the large RP-CRTs because I think they still have the best picture of the big TVs. The only downside to them is their size and weight. Providing you have enough space to accomodate one, that's the direction I would look.
  17. You can use any speaker design for a back speaker to good effect. I happen to have two standard wallmounted speakers in the back. The advantage of the RS series is that it disperses sound into a broad area. Room layout and personal preference will dictate which you think will work best for your situation. Anything from the RB, or RS lines will work fine as back speakers. Good luck, and happy listening.
  18. If your speaker setting is set to large, the low frequencies are sent to both the 7's and the subwoofer.
  19. Ahhhh yes, the college apartment! Mine was usually christened on the first night!! How things have changed. When I was in school in the days before Windows and the internet, virtually nodody owned computers & we used typewriters. HEH Strangely enough, both my wife and I still have our typewriters.
  20. Yea, no kidding. Pop in something like Terminator-3(something with a lot of sound effects) and it wont take you long to realize the movie sounds drastically different. That actually happened to me once. I unknowingly popped in SW-EpIII on a friday night with my sub turned off, and it only took me about 5 seconds into the opening battle scene to realize something was VERY wrong......LOL
  21. The Khorns do very little below 35-40hz, so a sub is a must if you watch any movies. Movie soundtracks have a lot of stuff in them that your Khorns cannot begin to reproduce. It will make less of a difference with music. Just set your crossover low.
  22. Whether front or downfiring doesnt really matter, but oldbucksters logic is exactly backwards. The more bass absorption you have, the better the bass response. Carpet has value because it absorbes higher frequencies, but it does virtually nothing for the really deep stuff. You'll need bass traps for that......
  23. That's a darned shame becaue the room "IS" your sound. Spending money on 'this or that' is like upgrading to a new fly swatter before you've cleaned up the mess. Either way, you're fighting a losing battle. The most significant way to improve your sound is to fix the room if you have not done so. There are no rules against a living room being both acoustically friendly and 'attractive'. Yes, if you spend $1200 on a better sub,(it will sound better), but if you put that same money into your room...........it will sound a HELL of a lot better[] my 2 cents...
  24. After skimming the many responses in this thread, I agree. We shouldnt bash Booze. In fact, they are great speakers........ right up there with "White Vans". In fact, I recommend anyone who has the opportunity to purchase speakers from a white van to do so. It will be an opportunity that you'll never regret!! If you have not bought "White Vans".... well, then you arent liven'[:$] PS.... Is there a vomit smiley? If not, there should be for just this occasion. Isnt it our duty as those 'in the know' to bring attention to a TURD to those asking for advice? Isnt that the whole point of these forums?? Why recommend a $2-3k turd to someone when they can do much better by going with a company who actually makes HIFI speakers? Oooops... sorry. I meant to say...... I love buying speakers from companies who keeps "Top Secret" speaker specifications. LOL
