  1. Ah yes, Smothered Cabbage.... probably the Klipschorn of Southern Cookin'... Dive School is in July, left you a message on the home phone. send me an email or call me tomorrow. How'd the Dtel appendix go? Hope he kept in in a jar as a conversation piece (we do that sorta' stuff down here...) Also, did he get a chance to hook up the amp to the C's? Rachel is in Driver's Ed.... My insurance company is not happy.... Retirement lump sum will hit the mortgage in exactly 21 months.... At that point, i can do whatever I want. Now if we can just get past the hurricane season. takes 3 boxes of 55 gallon drum liners to cover all the important stuff (Klipsch.. what else would be that important?...) Apart from that, I do really sympathize with everyone north of Florida. this winter has been a real SOB. Going to the beach and swimming in the pool this week has been rough, what with the sand in the flip flops, beer got warm when the cooler ice melted..., but someone's gotta do it....
  2. "Oh You Can Believe That".... Katrina has dictated where they will go, sprinkled holy water, etc. and even shut the door and let me listen to them "real loud like".
  3. All, Yup, got them today. 320 mile round trip, but worth it. Original owner, carted them around since college in WV. I'm "side by side" testing them vs LaScalas. Bass is better - more "direct" if that makes sense; mid is slightly less clear and "separate", likely due, in part, to the 601 vs the 400 horn (I'm also using Bob Crites' special A/4500 crossover in the LS's which is a more "extreme slope", so that's probably cheating..); highs are about the same. Bob's CT-125 at point blank range is better, but after about 10 feet it evens out. BUT the "footprint" in the room is much better. The 24" depth of the LaScala is just too much for certain rooms. The WAF (wife acceptance factor) played out here. When my wife saw the dtel's Cornwalls, I got the "that's what we need instead of those monster Klispchorns all over the house" look on the drive home. Oh well. They are HWO's, RV2, and really are in the advertised mint condition. Listening to "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" on a TASCAM CC-222 through identical Warren Bendler modded Sansui AU-919's. Clean, very clean... All that aside, they are really good as the "flankers" with the LS's as the centers. My ears are still failry good, but I'm not detecting any noticeable comb filtering/ null effects with them in that "array" (Oh the heresy...) Greatest apologies to Dtel and Mrs. Dtel (and anyone else that tried to get in contact); Mr & Mrs Luquet and their family were most gracious and kind and my family had a great time visiting. I tried calling weekly since we got back, but the cell number does not seem to work (?). I'll try again tonight. Could not go on the i-net unless it was work related for the last two months (policy change at work), and we don't have i-net access other than a 26k dial up for email at home. Had serious problems with email and i-net access (Amy at Klipsch knows what I'm talking about). Problem was resolved just very recently. I can now keep my email address and access anything I want (within reason) after duty hours. In any event, my decision to go for a pair of Cornwalls is fully credited to Dtel and Mrs. Dtel. When we visited and heard their Cornwalls we decided that that was the way to go for the "home theater" in the living room. Klipschorns are great (Lord knows I've got three pairs of them...)., but they are just too big for that application until we build the new house in a couple years. I have not "forum'd" for a while for the reason cited, and also I've been tied up at work. The Heresy projects are being completed. Michael Bell in Ohio got one of the "new" cabineted pairs. I've two more pairs to finish and then turn my attention to the Klipschorns.... For Colterphoto; all albums are being sorted by some "help" and your Allman Brothers will be the first batch to leave. Can't remember who else asked for "new" cabineted H-I's, but the next pair will be ready next week and I will post pictures here before they end up on eBay.... Later and best wishes to all.
  4. Two pairs, both mounted at 8' height. Both are, however, angled down with a reverse riser (2" to 1"); room is 24 wide and 16 deep. Speaker pairs are at far ends on top of massive bookshelf cabinets. Powered by identical amps. So.... Works great, but I would recommend that the higher you go, be prepared to play with the "aiming" angles.
  5. Welcome to the Forum! OB and the others are right; it's gotta go; they will chew through plastic, vinyl (your wires...) woofer cones, or anything that they can, it keeps their little teeth sharp...etc. They are a major pest! Had mice get into the area above the ceiling in the trusses/rafters in our boat building; fully enclosed except for a ventilation port that had come loose during a hurricane. This is what we did: Take a piece of carboard and duct tape and tape it to the port along the top, leaving it like a flap, but "one way" in the "out" direction, put out the trap/ peanut butter, etc. and hopefully it'll get hungry and leave and can't get back in without chewing through the cardboard. Once they left, they were fair game for the "ship's cat" that we keep in the building just for these little problems.... Good luck.
  6. For sure! That "rift" or quartersawn cut is very pretty. Looks almost "heavy" more than a "medium" cut, can't really tell. That laquer really brought out the grain pattern. Those speakers may go for alot on eBay. They seem to be in really nice condition. Original owner paid "big bucks" for that time for the special order. Flat cut just does not bring out the grain like that. Have some older felt backed quartersawn pieces of Karelian birch which are pretty. They are going to have a nice cherry stain on some Heresy's that I'm restoring. I hope they look half as good as the those H-ASL's.
  7. Funny you should mention that; That's why I recognized it!! Why just the other day when my wife "nailed" me with that bat for something, I remember the last thing I saw was the "striking" patterns.....[6]
  8. It's hard to tell sometimes; I had to pull out the veneer sample sheets just to make sure it wasn't Anigre. I've seen a Klipschorn or Corwall, can't recall which, that was Anigre veneered; at a distance it's similar. I'm pretty sure that new Klipschorns now use ash ply wood instead of the Russian/ Karelian (Baltic) birch. I knew this "woodhead" stuff was going to come in handy someday.....
  9. Welcome to the Forum; I am not in any way an expert on the acoustics and room size. Right now there are a number of members that have an absolutely outstanding level of knowledge. As a start point for you to consider is the "golden rule" ratio of 1.618 (I believe); thus a room with 9 foot ceilings should be 14.5 feet x 23.5. You should "google" this and read why this ratio is so important with music, harmonics, etc. Regardless of the size, however, a most important thing is to make sure the room is properly constructed or treated for audio. So, to help understand about the issues involved, use search option and look for acoustics, large room/small room, etc. In particular read the posts related to these topics by mas, DrWho, and a number of others. Good luck, and I'm sure that alot of folks here will help you out much more!
  10. K4L: I believe it's ash; "ASL" I think is ASh/Laquer and the L/S out to the side could be for a notation by the inspector that it was laquered/ sealed (?). I have a sample of ash veneer here and it appears identical. Oak looks close, but oak generally has a faint "rainfall" pattern present. Hope that helps.
  11. dtel's wife: Just sent email to dtel (Elden); somehow lost your email address on this server[:$]
  12. Ok... Lets go for it; "Git 'er done": Solid State amps are the best; Tubes suck and those little "glowing: things burn my fingers anyways... The best way to use all your Klipsch stuff is to put them in a really, really, huge big pile facing you at about 3 feet away (you need that 1 watt at 1 meter thing anyways); turn everything up to volume nine, sit in the middle with all your rowdy friends, and put the keg at stereo center (very important as to not alter your "sweet spot" when trying to get a refill, throw on Lynerd Skynerd's "Sweet Home Alabama"; and make sure everyone's got them blow-up air guitars. If it don't sound right, turn it up some more....... [H][<)] So... Spank me,..... Beat me, bite me, burn me, talk dirty, chain me to a tree, but.. respect me in the morning (and don't take that last piece of pizza, and while you're up, get that keg out of the pool... I paid a deposit on that bad boy, fer' goodness sakes!!!). Politically correct version - I'm talking to a non-gender challenged female (my wife with a rolling pin in her hands...) who just walked in on this post gave me the really "that ain't funny, don't even think about it" look...[6] Oh well.....
  13. Law Enforcement analysis: Scam; UPS would be at least $400+ for "air", "next day air" per UPS store owner for 100+ pound speakers anywhere (including across the street); Notwithstanding that, eBay cgi address is invalid; The link itself is thus invalid and ebay has no record of that item; Likely scam was: Part 1; to get you to email, bid or BIN; then redirect your offer to buy, or payment to a false paypal or "spoofed" non-eBay transfer site; part 2.. they would have, for "security reasons", required you to re-enter the name and password at some point; result, they would have "captured" your eBay account info and used your info to fraudulently post for sale, etc. Suggestion, report it to eBay anyways. We deal with these problems a lot here, especially during the high volume "holiday season", and we generally advise everyone to log in to eBay only via the ebay https:// site, and access the search lists via their "My eBay" which is generally secure at that point. We also tell everyone to ignore any emails with second chance offers, etc from "eBay" or persons identifying thenselves as eBay users. While slow and a pain in the.... Only use the eBay email system for these transactions. Hope this helps.
  14. Khorn51; You are right about 2 way Heresy's. Most of them based on the H-II cabinets were called TH-SR's. Same size cabinet, same grill, but there was a plywood "plug" were the tweeter was located. They also made TH-SR3's which looked like a TH, but had the K-77 tweeter installed. They also had a different, heavy duty, crossover installed. Had a couple pairs of 86 TH-SR3's until last year. Sounded great, but the funky black "pickup truck bedliner" finish was too much for my wife.
  15. You are going to pick them up? First test.... take a CD or cassette over and see if they are hooked up and you can listen to them before giving him the money... Dented woofer dust cones? Probably little effect. Price can depend some on the appearance though. "Haggle" him down if you think they are in poor cosmetic shape. "FMV" fair market value; Don't know at all; I'm sure that a number of folks on the forum can probably give you a very good idea on a fair price for a used pair of RB-5's.
  16. Sometimes older Heresy cabinets tend to dry out over time and "leak" which can affect the lower bass response. If they are H-I's, you might want to consider sealing the back panel with some 1/2" x 1/8" thick, closed cell foam weather stripping. Also a good time to check and make sure all of the driver screws are tight. On H-II's, you can pull the woofer and make sure the foam rubber insert (24" x 12" x 3/4", usually gray) is inside the cabinet, and you can also go ahead and use new weather stripping for all of the driver/horn gaskets and the speaker/crossover terminal block on the back. That gasket material dries out eventually and you never know if the prior owner(s) took them apart to "look inside" and did not replace the gaskets. Generally good cheap maintenance for the old I's & II's. Hope that helps you. Good luck!
  17. Ah! the resident curmudgeon! Love curmudgeons..... Joking aside, help us a bit with the education process:[8-|] "Equal loudness curves" huh? Bottom line. You cannot EQ non_minimum phase signals. EQ does not correct room anomalies. You can only EQ direct signals. Also, measuring the frequency response of a room at a particular point, inverting the phase and re_applying the signal does NOT correct for non_minimum phase based anomolies appearing in the frequency domain caused by superposition! You cannot correct for comb filtering with an EQ! And I don't care HOW good the EQ is! Superposition being the overlaying of the phase inverted signal? FIR filters are being employed in a very limited fashion in DSP equalizing minimum phase regions of the frequency response. Beyond that, EQ CANNOT be used to correct for time based superposition of direct and reflected signals. Can you explain a little bit about FIR & DSP. But don't argue with me, debate Dick Heyser and Don Davis _ the originator of the 1/3 octave EQ! No argument from me; help again,... Of what use, even if minimal, would an EQ be to us? If any, what kind? This is assuming we cannot afford to remodel or "treat" the room at this point? BTW, I have some directional wire for sale I can let you have for an excellent price! And it makes bi_wired speakers just sing!! Nah, thanks though! I just got some.......[] Sorry folks, I wish it were true.... I wish I could keep a straight face and charge for recharging crystals too! And I will even keep them under a pyramid for an extra day or two! And I even have the degrees to add legitimacy! It must be true! Extra for the pyramid? No way!...........[:^)] I hate to be the resident curmudgeon, but hey, someone has to do it! At least we have a curmudgeon of Dickensian proportions to beat us about the head and shoulders on occasion.... [] Have fun... That, I can assure you, we are doing (moving speakers, rugs, etc., around) and with all due attention and speed to re-connecting things properly (in phase...)[<)]
  18. A parametric (not graphic) EQ can sometimes help alot; Old SAE's were pretty good in their time. I'm looking into this unit below for my Christmas present.... I'm trying to get with a dealer to get a "loaner" to test. Kosmos® V2 Generator-Processor MSRP: $299.99 Second generation sub harmonic and stereo enhancement system drastically improves the listening experience in any space-with any sound system. 19. Re: GLS metal connectors, heat shrink tubing that you can use over the assembled metal GLS connector, and general insulation supplies. Comes in red, black and other flavors, etc. This is good stuff and meets the Department of Defense specs (MILSPEC). We also use it at work on coax leads, etc. for our boats. http://cgi.ebay.com/1-2-2-1-RED-Heat-Shrink-Tubing-10_W0QQitemZ330052762748QQihZ014QQcategoryZ73132QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Capin-Newbie: Cute kids!
  20. Bob Crites (BEC) is right, you do need to find out where it's actually coming from. "Nothing is impossible, Watson.., Simply eliminate what is not, and whatever is left...."
  21. Everything else checked out ok, we assume; swapped left to right, isolated cabinet from whatever it's sitting on, etc.? Before you go further (and I hate to say this, but you might want to pull the woofer out and check it. Gasket is 1/2" wide, thin, closed cell weather stripping, so at worst, you will have to run to Home Depot or even Walmart today. Could be a problem with the woofer.... But, does this happen ONLY with the test program you say you downloaded? Or does it happen when you play something that you know how it's supposed to sound like also? Could the test program being doing something you don't know about? Please let everyone know what you discover as you go. I'm sitting here with a K-24 on my desk, so if you want you can PM me and we can talk over the phone.
  22. If it does..., I think Wpines may have found a teeny little "problem related" condition.....[]
  23. Actually it will be PM; your server rejected your forum email address???
