  1. Assuming this was a typo, and you meant "stretch" that is really funny!! It's pobably 150 inches. Looks like a normal Khorn to me with fancy wood trim and cloth.
  2. It would have to be the Heresy's because the others are too heavy to carry, even with your adrenal glands full one. Besides, you'll get more insurance money for the bigger ones and then you can afford Jubilees.
  3. Everyone that has heard it has been impressed, even some non-horn people. The curves do not reaveal the efforless bass definition and detail. Also, having my LaScalas upside down and back in the corner (to minimize time delay between drivers) has created greater mid detail. I think it's because the top of the MWM's have created a reflective "shelf" to restrict the energy that would go to the floor and to redirect it to my ears instead, since my head sits roughly level with the K400 in the LaScala.
  4. I agree with John Albright (see my avatar). My MWM "subs" have the same low distortion and transient characteristic as the LaScala, but all 4 of them run off the MONO sub out of my AV receiver for 2.1 stereo (IOW, they get the .1 signal). They are crossed at 150 Hz, which is the only way I could tame the 150 Hz. peak coming from the LaScala (this could be the blues guy's problem). My current setup has way more definition, detail, and impact than my Khorns ever did (for 30 years, mind you).
  5. Can you explain what the mixer is used for and how, thanks You can get a Behringer microphone (omni condenser) for $50 (balanced XLR plug), but you will need to spend about $250 for the mixer device that has the Phantom power supply for the mike. My setup is worth over $2,000 (more expensive mike and software), but is was borrowed from a friend.
  6. Here's the RTA 1/12 th octave resolution of the response in a real room. Remember that the rolloff on the high end is normal at the listening position. Flat would be "drill your ears" too bright. When measured at the mouth, the tweeters actually put out more decibels than the mid or woofer horns. Below 300 Hz, the room takes over. Please note that the rear Direct Radiator/Bass Reflex subs with 6 large cones are OFF. They are only used to extend the bass to 17 Hz for movies. If you can keep your bass within a 10 db envelope such as is done here you are doing very well in a real room.
  7. It took a while to tweak it right, but I use twin VMPS Large Subs (passive with 90 Hz. rolloff) with a 200 WPC amp underneath my Peaveay SP-1 (cheap used 2-way horns similar to LaScala) rear channels on the side walls behind the couch. I just power them on for movies mostly and some music, but normally only the MWM's are used for music. Both get the same mono signal as the MWM's. They add 'bootie shake" material that has content below 40 Hz. Turning them on causes a slight dip in response between 60 and 100 Hz at my Real Time measuring position. So, effectively, you could say that I have 6 separate subwoofers, but most of the bass definition comes from the LaScala Bass and the MWM's working together in an amazing way.
  8. Now I have 3 LaScalas, but since my corners are only 13.3 feet apart, and the fact that I'm using a 5.1 receiver for 2.1 (for music) and 5.1 (for movies), the center LaScala (with Bob Crites Tweeter) only comes on for movies. The R and L channels have baby cheek JBL2404's with the John Warren Xover at 6 Khz. I can tell if they're using Ziljian or Paiste cymbals on Jazz recordings (not really, but you get the idea). It's hard to see in the Avatar, but the tweeters are resting inside the LaScala bass mouth. They are upside down because if puts the K-400 mid-horn exactly ear level when I'm in the listning couch. Better than Khorns? You bet. Incredible bass detail with ridiculously low distortion and low power consumption. I can hear bass lines like never before. The MWM's are 45 degree horns instead of 90 degrees like the Khorns, so the bass comes right at you (like the LaScala), not shot to either side like the Khorn. Plus,Like the LaScala, the horn is folded only twice instead of 3 times, so you hear "into" the K-33 driver more. BTW, my MWM's have the same drivers as the LaScalas and Khonr, the K-33's. In MY room the K-43's were overkill (even more efficicient and punchier), but I wanted the LS and MWM's to have all the same drivers for the same sonic signature. So three K-33 woofers per channel in 3 horns, plus midrange and treble horns makes for 10 horns to do Right and Left. Oh, and BTW, all 4 MWMs' sections are drive with the same 0.1 mono signal from the receiver's line level sub out and into their own 100W amplifier, soon to be downsized to 25W because I only use about 2W peaks per bin on the loudest bass stuff, even movies. Like PWK said, distortion is approxiamately proportional to power. Less power, less distortion. It don't get much better than this setup!
  9. See my Avatar. I had 2 Khorns and a LaScala for 30 years. Exact same setup as PWK in various rooms/homes. Refreshing the Midrange cap on the Khorns was the most significant. Did the same thing to my LaScala. Rebuilt an old 1966 LaScala with used parts, sold the Khorns and added the MWM's. Way more bass impact and difinition. I have never seen more than a 2 Watt peak for each cab on any sane musical content at 80-95 db listening levels. I also like Bob's tweeters, but prefer the JBL baby cheek. To each their own, but a LaScala crossed at 150 to an MWM "sub" is unreal for music.
  10. They are probably tearing down as we speak. I coudn't go, but I see they had some JBL Harsfield clones on the menu.
  11. I put old K33's in mine and they DID measure down to 30 Hz in a small room, amazingly. I PEQ's the peak at 180 Hz and was good to go.
  12. all you need now is an MWMs under each LaScala and you can join my CLUB!! Claude
  13. Try flipping the LaScalas upside down and put the horn on the floor piece with the metal feet. This will move the horn closer to the bass bin and keep it high without messing with the original stuff. No sawdust with me method! claude
  14. You can fool the butcher, you can fool the baker, but you can't fool the undertaker. Truth always lies between two extreme viewpoints. Murphy was an optimist. How can you be in two places at once when you're not anywhere at all? Your latest speaker tweak or design always sounds the best, regardless of measured performance to the contrary. Everyone is entitled to their own ridiculous opinions on what sounds good. Most bands are over amplified and under talented. Two wrongs don't make a right, but three do.
  15. I agree with Michael and all the La Scala lovers. Pretty much all the Heritage Klipsch stuff sounds great with new, low ESR capacitors. But you guys simply have not heard ALL of the bass in your recordings unless you put some meat under them LaScalas like I have. Ignore the center LaScala.....my R and L channels are 500 pounds each and sound totally amazing. I tamed that inherent peak in the LS bass horn at about 150 Hz by crossing over to the MWM's and level matching with instruments. That extra few ocaves down there make a huge difference AND it's still ALL HORNS and no "boom." Talk about detail and dynamics.......wow.
  16. My stereo improved when I joined this forum and compared notes with other Klipsch horn fanatics. Now I have a 4-way all horn system and it's great.
  17. It's not used as a main amp, it's used as a portable battery powered amp, but with the LaScala top and mwm bottoms and AA crossovers you would not want to stand 10' in front of them. The way they sat in that pic it was 95 DB at 25' with a battery powered cd player and no distortion. I have no idea what the efficiency is on that set up, If anyone knows about what it would be please tell me ! Thanks Never did answer the bass question, it has plenty of bass, way more the the Cornwalls. I had thought about adding another bin for each side but I don't think it needs it, the bass is huge. The efficiency of the MWM-s cab is about 108 db/watt at 1 meter, which about the same as the K-401/K55 without the autoformer padding it down 3 db. The tweeter is about 105. So I can see where it's pretty loud. I listen to about 20 milliwatts of power indoors per bin (I have 4) on normal music. When it's cranking to earbleed levels, I measure about 4 watts per bin. Bass uses the most energy since you have to move the most air. Like Roy says, the bass horn is most important for lowest distortion. Unless you have experienced the extremely low distortion, great detail, and solid transients of MWM's you never real bass before. I say this as an owner of Klipsch Corner horns for 30 years. MWM's are amazing.
  18. The Lame encoder with Variable Bit rate set on the highest quality will produce the lowert bit compression ration and the highest resolution possible with an MP-3, but only when you RIP your own CD's or digital files from LP's. The i-tunes type of files are crap because they want the smallest file possible of "tolerable" quality to maximize cash flow from their servers. If they allowed an iTunes file to be tiwce as large with good fidelity, their gross sales would be cut in half, hence the crap sound kids are listening to, also revealed by the new Klipsch headphones.
  19. I love that. I think I will replace my 4 channels X 120 W (pair of stereo Haflers) with a pair of of Sonic Impact T amps, since I only draw 4 W per channel. You gotta love the super high efficiency and ridiculously low distortion of these things. Claude
  20. Not much. The guy that sold me mine used to do DJ shows and PA with 6 of these for 100,000 people. He told me all I needed was what you have. Of course he was using kilowatts of BGW power in them with 26 pairs of LaScalas. Claude
  21. Totally sweet, there Eldon. Welcome to my world!! I basically have double bins like that per channel with LaScalas on top...BUT your setup should work fine in stereo because you only need one bass bin per side, really. So do you have K-43's or K33's in there? What I found is that about 4 Watts of power in each bin is all you need for most bass needs, so, is that a chip amp you have hooked up to that CD player Nice work. I'll bet your wife and daughter are diggin' the sound eh? Claude
  22. Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.........Victor Wooten, electric bass master supreme. Acoustic bass recording (fat bass freaks) goes to Patricia Barber's "Modern Cool" album........drums too.
  23. Has always been my comment on SUBs ......... thought I was alone, or worse, I was wrong !!!!!!!!!!! We all thought we were alone, but, as it turns out, there are more of us than we thought. Right is right.
  24. Good comment, JT. I agree that active subs can sound musical, but most people use subs like sledgehammers, if you know what I mean. It's like the old saying, good technology (multichannel and subs) is never as bad as poor practitioners (stupid mixing and sledgehammer users), nor ever as good as the demo that caused you to buy it in the fiest place. Peace, Love, Beatles
