  1. I had no idea that Max had passed. I too counted Max as a friend. The support line at Klipsch has been tied up for many hours with calls from Max. He would share audio knowledge and bits about "his girls" and their swim team. He was a great soul. I am looking for Jim Hunter now, I am not sure if he knows.
  2. Yes, the tweeter is revirse pollirty from the woofer. I will not go into the bi-wire debate. But the last time I checked, electrons didn't care. Bi-amp is a totally differet thing...it can be well worth while.
  3. Your drawing is correct. The LF foam is placed so it "looks good" when viewed from the port. As long as it does not cover the port, it will work.
  4. I don't want to discount what you hear...I have not heard it. However, one would think that to change the mechanical resonance of that horn to be higher than it is when mounted to the wood motor board you would have to use a dampening that is more dense than the wood. ring a bell, hear the sound. Put the bell on the table and ring it again. What did just sitting it on the table do? Just this last June I understood why PWK got mad at me. We found a number of K-400 horns with different type of "stuff" on the back of the horn. All test for just this question. As I am sure you know, PWK did not add anything to the horn. I am sure the difference could be measured, I question that it can be heard. The main thing is that you are happy with what you have. The enjoyment of the sound is what we all are after. As for measuring you speakers, I would be glad to if we ever get a chance.
  5. The answer is yes...its sad IMHO because I like the Icon W stuff. I have 34's and 35's...They do not have the power of the 82's but if you dont need the output, they sure sound sweet.
  6. Does the sub hum with it just pluged into the wall? Nothing else connected. IF so, then I would be looking at the filter caps on the power supply. Tech support can give you a schematic / service manual. No cost...or send me your email and I will send it to you. IF it does not hum then the problem is outside the sub. Contact me and I can talk you through finding the problem.
  7. I do not think so...well not with out a transformer to bring the 240 down to 120.
  8. First, selling your "kits" on our site is not cool. It is against our rules so please stop. Before the "well others do it" line comes out, I will say that just like in 3rd grade, you were caught this time not them. And yes, I have an issue with this, thus my attitude. The only time Paul Klipsch got mad at me was for asking about adding dampening to the back of a horn. As for the Lpad on the tweeter. The Lpad is a resistive load and does not change with frequency. The tweeter ckt is a reactive load and does change with frequency. so if you add a resistor to a reactive ckt it will change the total load but it will do it differently at different frequencies. lets toss some number in this...if the tw ckt has a 10 Ohm load @ 2kHz and you add a 5 Ohm resistor in series with the ckt then you will have a 15 Ohm load at that freq. This is a big deal as you have added half again as much Resistance to the ckt. Thus, you should see a big drop in output at that freq. IF the same ckt has a 60 Ohm load at 10kHz and you add the 5 Ohm resistor then you don't see near as much change due to the ratio between the to values. You should see little change in output at that freq. I caution anyone having a custom crossover built. I am sure many out there have done this and "like" the change. The issue I have with it is that you don't know what you have. Once done, what test are ran to confirm what has been done? Was phase and impedance taken in to account? What about the tolerance of the parts in the network and drivers? If test were ran, was the room taken out of the test or was it ran in a echo free room? When modeling the network, were the TSP and raw driver data used or just general numbers used? Why would any speaker company spend tons of money on test gear and locations it a few hundred bucks and your living room will do the trick? The answer from the sales guys is for you to buy the new RF-7 II, but we all know that would be a hard sale. Engineering addressed your and may other request in the new unit with new drivers and network and horn. We lowered the crossover point to about 1600Hz from 2400Hz. Part of what you hear as harsh is the break up of the woofer at high frequencies. The one thing that is for sure, you will not hurt the speaker or its parts by adding the Lpad. If you do and you like the end result, then I am happy for you because that is what we want anyway, for you to be happy. IF you do add it, make sure you put it in series with the positive leg of the tweeter after the network. ( take the + wire off the tweeter and connect it to the input leg of the Lpad, then take the output of the Lpad and connect it to the + terminal of the tweeter.) Good luck and sorry for the rant.
  9. When planning a system, I use a factor of 5...if I need 20 watts to get the volume from the speaker I want then I use a 100 watt amp. Like others said, you can allways turn things up to high... You can allways trun it down, but you can't turn it up if you don't have it. On the RVX-54, I suggest using a processer that can limit the low frequency that goes to the speaker. It can deal with full range just fine, but will sound even better if limited to about 80 Hz on the low end. I would suggest using a sub with that speaker. That speaker has a pretty low impedance dip at the 130 Hz mark or so...the amy you plan to use should deal with that well. It sounds like you have a nice system coming together. Enjoy!
  10. THanks for the "kind" words...Yes I did close on the house. I took a few before pictures and will take some more of during and after shots. I now have the net up and working at the house so I will try to post some pic's soon. I have pulled about 1000 ft of wire so far. I do have a issue, these numbskulls up here dont put light in the rooms. they only have switched outlets. So I have added light in all the rooms. ( I love the tingle of 110 I plan to stop working on the house for the weekend...need some party time.
  11. I did locate all the sprinkler heads in the yard outside the Mrg. office window and pull out the tape to make sure the tent would fit between them. All the time the Mrg was watching out her window. I watched her pick up the phone and make a call with fear on her face. Yes, THX UII will be going in the main room. verious other in the other rooms. Pulling wire on Sat morning...well that is if someone doesn't mess this up again.
  12. UP DATE: We are set to close at 3pm today...Painting tonight, moving in Sat and Sun. I plan to "cull" some more "stuff" so watch for a list soon. OR come by and dig through the pile (after you help carry in a few boxes I will post some pic's as I can and hope to plan a garthering soon.
  13. Just to be clear, I don' t care what the law says...they break in to my house and I am there...they will leave in a bag. I have lived in the country for most of my life...we never (that we know of) had a meter reader to try to get into the house. Most folks in that part of the woods understand what will be waiting. Or elect bill had a "tab" to send back with the next reading...thus no one came to read the meter. The LP gas guy went to church with us and was a good friend...he had a key. Here in the city, things are a bit different. I still don't suggest anyone break into my house with me there...I think Professor T is the same way.
  14. All I can say is PWK through me out of his house for suggestion such...
  15. FUN FUN....NOT Still trying to close...fired the banker that was "working" on my loan...due to lying to me along with other things. Have her boss, his boss and the VP in the mix now. At the point of making an offer, I had a pre-approvel on the loan. What a mess. At the end of the month I must be out of the place I am renting...If I don't have a place then, to prove a point, I plan to set up a tent in the yard of the Bank and move in. Anyone know a good lawyer and bail bonds man? [6]
  16. The RF-7 can have a new network built so it crosses over at the lower point, but you had better have some good test gear to know what you get in the end... The new xover and drivers will not fit in the old speaker.
  17. P Thump only plays with tiny things...I mean speakers. [:$]
  18. I just don't have the numbers from China. I will say that our team over there are at the plants almost every day of production. Making sure each product is built to our standards. We are there for the first run to set the process and standards then everytime they are built to make sure they are kept. Just like in Hope, EVERY unit is tested and inspected. FYI: We are always looking for product that can be built in Hope. More will being coming from Arkansas and I can't wait.
  19. Another old speaker you may look at is the Shorthorn... A very good speaker for that room would be the P-17B...
  20. The RF-7II improvements are very nice. First is the look. That knife edge cabinet looks great, but there is more than looks there. The new cabinet allows for a more stiff enclosure. The cones look better with the new dust cap, but it also has other value. The old cone could "ring" in the 3k Hz area. The new cone and dust cap is more ridged due to construction. This changes the break up mode and helps to solve the "ring". Most folks never heard this, but for the few that did I am sure they will see the improvement. The new HF driver is a hoss. It allowed the crossover point to be lowered, thus helping with the "ring". As always, the Hope plant does a prefect job on the cabinets, holding a 98 -99% right the first time tolerance. The craftsmen there are amazing. The new horn looks great. It uses a "pretty" trim ring to cover the screws and extend the horn length. Again helping with the lower crossover point. Last but not least is the grill and feet. New look and function. As for the "UP Grade", at this time we have no plans to offer up grade parts. (we want to sell speakers not parts...and the new parts will not fit into the old cabinets anyway.) truth is I have not had a chance to listen for any amount of time...the curves and what I have heard is worth the effort.
  21. I took a chance of getting fired or slaped...I came in the office and give Amy a kiss on the cheek with a Happy Birthday wish. She is one of my favorite people at work. I am proud to call her my friend.
  22. Give us a date brother and we will make sure we are free.
  23. I plan on doing some wireing and painting before moving in...I also plan on taking pictures as I go. So I will try to keep you in the loop if you like.
  24. I have the system .... SETI you have my cell and if you dont just ask. give me a call and we can grab a drink
  25. I think I will use the THX Ultra 2 system...BUILT IN HOPE! BUY American! I will have Oct to paint, wire and set up the new diggs...as well as get out of the rent house. Even more news to come...Sept 2nd will be a special day for me from now on.
