  1. Bradam, Glad you like the H's. Enjoy them. Thanks.
  2. AV - these aren't sold yet but I have an interested possible buyer that wants to come see them in person. I may do it differently than others but I attach the veneered doghouse/motor board to the back panel with ramps with liquid nails of the equivalent, clamp nail/screw, then attach that to the bottom using glue/clamp/screws, then glue, clamp,/screw the top to the doghouse and back, then attach the sides (veneered inside) to the bottom top and back using glue/clamps and 2.5" square drive screws ( due to the 1.25" thick sides). Recess and fill all screw holes. Then I sand smooth and veneered the back then sides then top. I'm using solid cherry wood on the 2" risers. I've attached pics. The second one is nearly built except for attaching one side, sanding, veneering, applying front edge trim, finishing and then rubbing finish. Hard stuff is done.
  3. Sorry I'm kinda late to the party! I've redone several H's and a pair of beat up C's that had mahogany veneer that was painted black and had chicken wire in front of the woofers ala Animal House. I suggest sanding with a random orbital sander 60-80 grit on medium speed until you start seeing some veneer showing through then switch to 150-220 and lower the speed. Stripping is nasty and could affect the veneer glue. If the surface is okay then fill any dents/cracks with stained filler and sand with 500 grit. I like to use Minwax wipe on satin poly and sand between coats with 400 grit. After about 5 coats I sand and let dry for 3-4 days then wet sand with 400 grit wet sand paper using bowl of water with some dish soap in it to act as a lubricant. Sand until the shine is gone and poly is level then wipe with wet towel then dry towel. Then use 0000 steel wool and Minwax finishing wax and applying to take out the sandpaper scratches working in a straight and circular motion interchangeably. Some people wait 30 minutes before removing wax but you can wipe excess off with a new soft terry cloth and buff to your hearts content. Makes a really smooth shine - takes out dust nibs and scratches and water beads up on the finish. Just a suggestion. Good luck.
  4. I just redid a set of Heresys and sourced at HD sheet metal screws. 1" for woofer #10 I think, 1" for mid #8 I think, and 3/4" #8 or 6 I think. The mid horn flange is thicker than the tweeeter flange so be careful on the length. I didn't want a screw coming through the new veneer!! i used new screws on the back on the 1984 set since the originals weren't very long and I added foam seal tape and front to rear brace. Good luck
  5. Been missing in action for a while due to work.. I used glue, clamps and 2.5" screws recessed to attach the 1.25" sides to the bottom and top of bass bin, and the back of the sides to the back - then filled, sanded and veneered using iron and Heatlock. I used 1 5/8" screws to attach the bottom and top to the sides. Veneer the back, then sides then top to overlap. Have the parts cut out for second bass bin and will work on this weekend. Have a possible buyer for the cabinets so I'm glad I haven't built the top mid/hf cabinet which I plan to mount on spacers on the bass bin. Still not sure what horn to use if potential buyer doesn't buy. Might try the 11 x 17" ebay horn which appears to be a good choice. I'll need adapter from 1.4" ND6X to 2" throat. I wet sanded the poly after several days of drying then used Minwax wax and 0000 steel wool and then buffed. It is very smooth.
  6. AVGUY, love my Hogs!! Check out this thread on various specs for Belle woofers if you haven't already. I'm using the "pink" graph Eminence woofer and it sounds good. Good luck
  7. Thanks DTR. I used 1/2" BB ply and 3/8" neo magnets (6 per grill) with 6 under the front veneer. Easy to get on and off and no unsightly velcro or grill pegs. BTW these were listed in the garage sale forum but are now SOLD!!!
  8. SOLD!!!!!! Thanks for all the compliments guys!! I appreciate it. Just sold them to a forum member. I've got one more set of cabinets and tweeters but need some K22 woofers, mid drivers and crossovers to get a complete set. I used the woofers and crossover for a larger Heresy build for a forum member in Chicago. Need to decide what veneer to use this time. Maybe quartered figured etimoe, birdseye maple, rosewood or something else??? Love doing the redos and building from scratch
  9. Must have been factory. I think the bottoms were mahogany as well. I'll have to check my pics
  10. Guys, thanks for compliments. I installed neo magnets under the motor board veneer so the grill frames can attach without unsightly velcro or grill pegs. Best of both worlds. Will finish the grill frames tonight.
  11. Thanks Schu. I like the veneer. Not too dark, not too light. It's just right said the bear.
  12. Members 73 444 posts Location: Little Rock , AR Posted August 11 · Report post These were originally birch plywood with exposed layer plywood cabinets. After sanding smooth and cutting out the corner trim notches I installed quartered figured eucalyptus veneer and solid teak corner trim and install side to side and back internal bracing and made new slanted risers with matching veneer. I installed neo magnets under the front board veneer and made new 1/2" grill frames and installed banana plug terminals. Redid the E2 xovers with Solen 400VDC caps and bypass cap on parallel woofer cap. First time using this veneer and I'm spraying with satin lacquer and rub down with finishing wax. I listed the redo/build thread in technical modification forum. Also has matching 2" angled risers which are not screwed into the speaker bottoms. Will finish the grill frame tonight which uses neo magnets for attachment and post soon. Shipping is extra. Thanks. $625.00 to forum members .
  13. Finished with these puppies (except for stretching grill cloth on frames. I spray lacquered these then rubbed down with wet sandpaper and dishwashing soap the applied Minwax finishing wax. Slick as a whistle and smooth. I'll post these in the garage sale section for purchase.
  14. Retired, so far haven't done any unwanted cutting. I finished the bass bin and am trying to get a good match between bass and EV ND6X mid/tw crossing around 500HZ. Anyone have any crossover schemes that I might view? Bass RTA graph shows rise at 125-150. Anyone us a SNF to tame that down???
  15. Not sure if same diaphragm (think it is) but K79 uses larger magnet and horn than K76 as I recall
  16. Thanks Moray. That's the one I printed and can't get it big enough and clear enough to read (No I'm not blind!!!)) I am specifically interested in what appears to be a series notch filter on the woofer but would love to have a legible full diagram. Any help appreciated. Thanks.
  17. Does anyone have a "clean" copy of the AB-3 crossover schematic. I copied one off this thread as I recall but can't read the values on my monitor or printed page. Any help appreciated. Hope i didn't miss a clean copy somewhere.
  18. K3 I don't know what paint might work. May use a rattle can after filling any dents/nicks with bondo or another material. Mine are in good shape but look "dull". I don't know if they are paintable but I'll check that out. So far I love the ND6X crossing over at 500hz. It is about 113db per EV specs and I need to tame it down to 104. I'm using an lpad now to match levels. As I understand the autoformer you double the multiplier of impedance for each 3db of increased attentuation. At -9db I should multiple the 8.6ohm driver impedance by 8 which gives 68.8ohm as the mid ohm figure and the crossover calulator shows i need a 4.6uf cap to feed the 3504 for a 6db slope at 500hz.
  19. Karlson, Right now I'm experimenting with this as a two way with ND6X driver handling 500hz up. Sounded good to my ears but I need to get a friend to run some tests. I plan on using a 12db high pass at 500hz now. The horn is rigid injected urethane as I recall so not sure what filler would be good. Bondo? Epoxy??? Dunno. If I do go three way on this I may use a separate tweeter in plane with the mid. Still not sure I'll use the 120a horns but I had them here so I'm using them now. I notice there is a hole on one side of the horn which I assume is there to allow the tweeter wire to connect if you mount a tweeter in the mouth frame. Any info you can share is appreciated. Thanks. Moray James usually chimes in on these discussions and he has experience with these horns as I recall.
  20. Okay, Old Timer you got me on that one! Heck I loved the Eagles because their songs were stories and observations on life which we could all connect with at some point in time. Same with Jim Croce, CCR, Stones, and Miley Cyrus. Country songs - You don't have to call me darlin darlin. Greatest last verse of any song. Okay, I'm kidding about Miley. The last thing you want to be is an ex boyfriend of Taylor Swift.
  21. Crime and punishment!!! We could talk about this for days. Taking the drivers license has a greater effect. Even then people will still drive until they get caught. They still drink and drive even though there are pretty stiff laws against that. My wife scolds me all the time about my comments directed at other drivers. When I break into my "when I was young we had to . . . . . ." tirade. We walked 5 miles to school each way everyday in the snow and it was uphill, both ways! Seriously though, young drivers don't use blinkers to warn of a lane change - or even worse they turn on the blinker AFTER they have completed the lane change which eliminates the "warning" function of the blinker. It is there to tell other drivers "I'm about to change lanes" or as we say in the south, "I reckon I'm a fixin to move over". This is like putting the "highway out" sign on the other side of the sinkhole. Also young drivers follow too close and don't realize perception/reaction time and feet per second calculations until after they run into the rear of someone. They probably won't see the car they are about to hit because they're playing with their phone. Music has changed as well - from the songs that had great story lines and quotes to the new what's on my mind this second lyrics.. Okay call me old and crotchety (hope that's a word). I'm reminded of the quote from the Network movie where the guy opens the window and yells "I'm mad as -ell and I'm not going to take this anymore"? I think I've become that guy and its scary!
  22. Right now I installed the 11-15-046 15" woofer in the one Belle I've finished and love the sound. I haven't compared it to a K-33 which I have on hand and will do later. The 046 is a massive speaker with cast frame and 3" vc and large gauge voice coil leads. Here are the specs I just measured two days ago. 15 INCH EMINENCE 11-15-046 WOOFER 1.docx
