  1. I was refering to true quad/CD-4 records. The others aren't damaged anymore than playing a regular stereo record or in my experience about 10 good plays before the noise floor starts to raise. I still can't quite picture a needle moving at 40,000 hz but they went far past that point with CD-4! Thanx, Russ
  2. What's your budget? Do you want an amp, integrated amp or a receiver? Thanx, Russ
  3. Sorry, I'm with tigerwoodshorns, 2 channel rules! Sorry I can't help with your decoding issues but I did get a Pioneer DVD player from a buddy for that very reason. Too many formats, too many cable connection types for me. Thanx, Russ
  4. I've got all the CD's and DVD's, not a loser in the bunch, not even one throw away song. If your system is toward the brighter side you can hear the noise supression fade in and out on Love Scenes but it's still great. Thanx, Russ
  5. My that is a small room. Your last set-up looks much better but you need to push the tv back about 3 feet. It's totally blocking the spot you need for clear imaging. Give it a try. Thanx, Russ P.S. Nice set-up by the way.
  6. You won't do it any good but the quad records used a different shaped diamond tip so you are probably playing in a different part of the groove. They carry the the rear channel information in the 20,000 hertz to 40,000 hertz band so just about any play will knock off the carrier signals. I never went with quad and it didn't last too long. Is anybody left using a true quad system anymore? Thanx, Russ
  7. Punch a hole in the other one and you'll have a matched pair! (Seriously, patch or replace the cone. You just made a small tuning change but you should fix it.) Thanx, Russ
  8. First make sure you are in phase. You can try inverting the phase if that gives you higher bass output in your room (some people might not like the sound of inverted phase). The thump in the chest comes from the mid bass not the subwoofer. Hsu Research makes a mid bass module just for that purpose. I've haven't tried it but if you want thump............... Thanx, Russ P.S. Count me into the anti EQ club. If there is no thump on the record there is no way to make it thump without messing up something else. "If it ain't in the groove it ain't going play".
  9. Court and Spark is a top shelf album on vinyl or on CD. I like it much better than Blue, although many prefer Blue. If you like Joni Mitchell her Miles of Ailes live album is an excellent collection of her work and a little more bouncy and upbeat, give it a try. Thanx, Russ
  10. I can hear fans, so they are no good for cd playback, they are OK with records, the surface noise is louder than the fan. Thanx, Russ
  11. I don't have a vote, I haven't heard that many horn systems. Except maybe the Altec Voice of the Theater that was in every movie house in the 60's. I have heard Avantguard in a limited demo, very nice. I'm sure Khorn will be right up there but lets hear about them all. Thanx, Russ
  12. DRBILL, you said; "Hum is the bane of every tube owner's existence. There is always a little. Sometimes you have to put your ear up to the speaker, but it's there." I agree that it is somewhat common but I have 2 complete tube systems that are dead quiet. I don't know why some tube systems have more hiss and hum than most solid state systems, perhaps due to power supplies and noisy tubes mostly or too much gain. I always ask before I buy a component if it is "dead quiet" and so far I've been lucky. You did a good job of finding your problem, I'm not sure most of us would be that clever. Thanx, Russ
  13. I just bought a new DVD player for my second system. It can upsample to 480i,480p,720p,1080i and 1080p. I can't really say I hear (or see) a difference between the different settings with my 2 channel setup. Anybody notice much difference? Thanx, Russ More: Reading the manual it looks like this only works through the HDMI cable, which I'm not using at this time (only one input and the sat box is using it). It also has LPCM rate settings of 48K,96K AND 192K, again I think they only work when you are feeding to a HDMI input on a reciever. I haven't owned a reciever since about 1974 so I guess this stuff is wasted on me and my basic rig.
  14. For better imaging, put the speakers on the long wall 18 inches out and push the TV as far back as it will go. Or you can treat the side walls. Thanx, Russ
  15. I have not heard this in years, I can still hear the refer running....... Do the new TV's do this or just the old CRT's? Thanx, Russ
  16. Marty, I think subs work and sound their best when you use the speaker connection. That gives the sub the sound of your system not just the sound of your preamp. It's a better match. Thanx, Russ
  17. Speedball, I had a CJ Sonograph. That's a nice amp and a good match for your RF7's. I think your system is good enough that the Tubehead would not be a good match. It's a good first step into tubes for not much money but your system could use a really nice preamp. It would be a big step-up for you. I'd think along those lines. I can't help you with the QSC amp, I've never heard one. Thanx, Russ
  18. Well done, Groomlakearea51, well done. Thanx, Russ
  19. So I start this little thread about the Heresy speaker and mention a term I coined called "Red Wine Audiophiles", before I know it, references AND pictures of Ripple, Night Train, Boones Farm and of all things Plungerhead start showing up! God help me! Not a single Claret in the bunch or a mention of any drinkable wine. My next thread will be about the "Jaegermiester Audiophiles". I hope the Klipsch main server doesn't crash! Thanx, Russ P.S. Here's a useful link for you guys: http://www.bumwine.com/
  20. If you have some red wine, everything will have a nice glow! Thanx, Russ
  21. TV audio circuits are crap. I'd rather pass it through lamp cord! Oops that's another thread. Thanx, Russ
  22. I DID ride a scooter in High School! Never had any trouble at 6 foot 3, although at 165lbs I wasn't that impossing. My other bike until recently was a Hayabusa if that is butch enough for you (replaced by a Ducati)! You have to be secure in your manhood to ride a scooter, it's like a boy named Sue kinda thing. Thanks, Russ Dtel, Look closer at the avatar, that's no kid in that picture. High school ended in '72 for me (The last 3 senior years were the hardest!) .
  23. mdeneen, NOSvalves, tigerwoodKhorn, Thanks for the replys, all very insightful. I wanted to get opinions from what I call the "red wine" audiophiles. The guys that can sit and savour the nuances of a system and have the kind of budget that they are not limited in their selection of gear. I wanted to hear from the guys that have no trouble paying 300 bucks for an interconnect cable (or way more), if that what it takes to get the system just perfect. The guys that spend the time and money to get a system just so. I have 2 very modest systems but they are very much over-achievers, in their price range. I value all the opinions here on this website but I want to hear from guys that are closer to my experience and sensibilities. Please chime in if you have something to add. Thanx, Russ Coytee, et all, I'm sure your Jubs are just awsome and I'm sure the others systems are fine as well. Don't take what I said as a knock, heck I used lamp cord for 30 years and thought it just right, it just doesn't work in the systems I have presently.
  24. It looks like you could use a cable upgrade on the fax phone! Thanx, Russ
