  1. Klipsch done right sounds great. Klipsch done wrong can sound very bad. It really all comes down to enviroment and what gear is driving the speakers ( and quality of recording ).
  2. Klipsch had Heresy's without tweeters in surround speakers built for movie theatres. I worked a 80's vintage UA theatre with them in it.
  3. I have heard of Fulton but not Boulton. If it's Fulton you mean, he was a modifier and he also built some gear. I heard a pair of his speakers and they were impressive though their size, around 6' tall, was a bit large to ever consider for myself. A friend had some of his speaker wire, it was the 1st of the "monster cable" sized wire. I was given a pair of Dynaco Mk 3's that had been modified by Bill Johnson's company before Audio Research and then modified again by Fulton.I gave them away and regret it to this day.
  4. "...at which point they show a picture of what I guess is supposed to be the back of a typical component set-up; you have never seen such a tangle of wires in your life as what they had arranged back there!"- Hey c'mon over and look at my setup! I think they might have snuck into my house for the pictures! I like the part about stuffing 500 miles of transmission line in that tiny box. Probally tuned to around 500hz! Anyone ever hear of the Blose Acoustic Cannon? It was a failed pro sub they came out with in the eighties- ICK!
  5. I've put in many a JBL speaker system in theatres and outside of the cost factor they are very plain uninvolving sounding speakers ( and that is after eq'ing the auditoriums ). The build quality of the cabinets are cheap. To their credit the drivers seem to hold up well. Why not look at the pro Klipsch gear?
  6. William: " I should watch being too pedantic. " What exactly is PEDANTIC?
  7. What are you hearing? Is it the transport? If it does not have vent holes on the top and bottom, could you use Dynamat or something like it to cover the ( interior ) sheet metal? ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  8. Many years ago there was alot of talk about how good C. Crane antennas were. I can't remember if it was there AM or FM which was considered very good. Browse through their site and see if there is anything that can help you http://www.ccrane.com/radios_and_antennas_index.asp Is Studs Terkel still doing a show on Public radio in Chicago? He is a great story teller! ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  9. Is there a way for you to mount some small 3" or 4" muffin fans in the cabinet backs sucking the air out of the component areas? I think the cooler the better for the gear. Let us know what you do! ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  10. "Why don't these boards spend more time talking about room acoustics and sound recordings? Aren't those the biggest factors?" Yes both are very important! I would much rather have marginal speakers in a acoustically "correct" room than great speakers in a acoustically marginal room ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  11. mobile homeless-I find your comments about Audio Research interesting. Some of the same verbage you use is exactly what some friends of mine say about the Klipsch sound. I always make the argument that what they are saying ( or hearing ) is that the speakers are just plain accurate. Just an observation- not in anyway a flame. PS- Do you like the Rega Planet? I have it on the top of my list when my player dies. ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  12. I bought a Bryston 3B new three years ago and paid $1400.00 for it. It's hard to believe they have gone up that much. Check around for pricing and don't be afraid of buying a demo or used one- with their warranty you have little to fear. ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  13. I had a mid cutting out. Turned out it was a loose screw on the crossover. Check the connections. I would think if a mid driver is bad it would either be dead or zinging from a burned or frayed voice coil. ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  14. I have a old SP3a preamp that I bring into Audio Research every few years to upgrade caps, new volume control, they even had a new rack mount faceplate- this for a preamp that was built in the '70's! It is very nice sounding, although I am sure far from hi- end today. I noticed on Audio Research's web page they have a new upgrade for the SP3 series- very tempting! I have always wondered why there is such love for McIntosh gear and very little for Audio Research, I think they are both top notch brands. You can't go wrong with Audio Research. ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  15. Your in the ballpark price wise.I have bought two pair through out the years and $400.00 has been my top paying price. ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  16. Lots of people like the Decware Zen amps ( wish I was in the position to buy a pair ) http://www.decware.com You can shop around for a Dynaco ST 70, a friend of mine has Forte's and a ST-70 and loves the combination. I have a old Scott LK-48 you can have for cheap- it's in nice shape though I would recommend a retube, let me know if your interested. ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  17. I have a Apex DVD player, bought it for $69.00 at an outlet store. Brought it home, downloaded firmware to defeat the macrovision and regions. It works fine but it is not a quality item. They are known for being inexpensive and modified easily. I think most of the guts of the thing can be replaced with off the shelf computer parts ( at least the model I have ). Here's a link for the Apex forums http://www.nerd-out.com/forum/ ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  18. Had a pair of Heresy's in the back of my wife's ( girlfriend back then ) Jeep CJ. Man that set up was LOUD! That setup was a replacement for some Bose 801's I gutted and put some Jensen coaxials in!! Best sounding Bose I ever heard! ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  19. "direct radiating speakers tend to be a bit more forgiving of poor recordings." Yea, the majority of mass marketed speakers tend to be just that. Just note that there are a great deal of direct radiating speakers that are as revealing- maybe even more so than Klipsch. This is something I often wondered about, do you go for a dead acurate speaker( ie- Klipsch ) or very musical speaker ( may I suggest Dynaudio? ) I think it also matters if your using them for home theatre or two channel listening. ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  20. How safe is it to clean your ears with hydrogen peroxide? Seems to it might be harmful. At one of the natural medicine stores near me the sell " ear candles ". You light one end with a lighter and lay down and put the other end in your ear and it is suposed to suck the wax up into the candle . ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  21. Anyone make it a point to have their ears cleaned out by the doctor on a regular basis? I had my left ear blocked up a few years back and went to the doctor. He cleaned out my ear with a big syringe filled with water and I could not believe every little thing I was able to hear after that. So I started thinking- maybe as a proclaimed audio nut- I should have my ears cleaned every year or two? Anyone do this or is this just crazy thinking? ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  22. I think there is a difference in interconnects but far less so with speaker wire. I think the only factor in speaker wire is that it be oxygen free copper and a good gauge- 12 or 10 for long runs. Other than that it' all perception. ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  23. Ray, 118db! pretty darn loud! I drove a pair at 110db once and that was loud enough for me. I believe I was using a old SAE power amp at the time. I think today I would slap in a pair of ear plugs to see just how loud my system would get- no point in wasting your ears in the name of loudness! How'd the neighbors like the sound? ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  24. I am pretty sure the cement walls are a little better for a corner for KHorns. There is no movement at all and that is a good thing. A friend of mine who is a Klipsch nut built corners into his listening room with 2"X4" spaced real close to one another and then 2 layers of cement board. I do believe he put fiberglass behind and hard fiberglass something like 3" thick with a covering on the front. ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
  25. Raven- I was off work for the last few weeks do to a state employees strike which forced our company to close. I also went heading to e- bay for some extra $$. I have an old JBL amp up, a set of Altec drivers and some other goods. All of the gear has been pretty much in storage over the past few years and have intended to put it up on e- bay but never have until now. As far as eq's go, they are good if used right ( for smoothing out the enviroment as posted above ) or they can be really bad if used wrong. I have a real time analyzer that I use to set up stereo systems and they have to be used if you introduce a eq into you system or you risk damage to your gear. ------------------ Just who is Dylan's Jokerman anyways?
