Hello all, After living in a 2-level apartment with a basement, I am now moving to a 2nd floor apartment. With the basement, I never worried about the sound from my HT booming out into my neighbors residences. Now that im going to be living above someone, I want to do the right thing to be a good neighbor. My system is as follows: KSB 3.1, KSC-C1, KSF-S5(?), and a KSW-12. All of this is run through a Denon 1601. Is there anything out there on the market that will prevent the low frequencies from my sub from going downstairs? I can't really afford a $1000 dollar piece of plywood, but any DIY suggestions are fair game. I dont listen to my system at bowel shaking levels, but I do like to have the full sound that my system can deliver. I did a search of the Subwoofer forum and couldnt find anything regarding similar situations, so any help would be appreciated.

saving private ryan is a great choice for #1. when i first saw it, i was 20 and just sat in my room afterwards in disbelief. i couldn't (and still can't) imagine going through a war. band of brothers (and the related documentary about Easy Company shown on Veterans Day) did the same thing for me. two movies that i cant help but smile at the end of are the shawshank redemption and amelie. you wont find too many scenes more powerful than andy dufrane basking in his freedom after escaping from shawshank. i get goosebumps. and for amelie, its just a 'warm fuzzy' of a movie.

i think its funny, because 15 minutes into the 6th sense i knew the 'secret'. for me it was way too obvious and i left the theater going, "well it was ok" when everyone else was peeing their pants with shock. with the others, it wasnt a shocker, but i didnt see it coming. still a very entertaining movie. those footsteps running across the celing sounded real in my apartment. i thought one of my roommates was running across the room upstairs. the devil's backbone... if you havent seen it, do. i really enjoyed that movie.

Here's a thought. Deal with it. My roommate in college used to listen to his stereo inside our room at all hours of the day and night (we didnt get along too well). Just learn to tune it out, over time you'll be sleeping through those false fire alarms! If the neighbors are still being loud, bombard their rooms with water baloons at around 3 in the morning. tenanbaums... all i can say is very odd humor. when i saw it in the theater, my friends and i were chuckling through the whole movie while everyone else was silent. they just didn't get it. do yourself a favor, watch BOTTLE ROCKET and RUSHMORE before you see the TENANBAUMS. if you didnt know, wes anderson (the director) and owen wilson (eli cash) wrote all three movies. while the movies are not related, all three make more sense after viewing them. you get a better handle on the humor of the writers. also, these movies have staying power (at least for me) i own all three and they get funnier the more i watch them. I concur with ShapeShifter. While I was waiting for my center speaker to show up, I hooked up a cheapo Sony crap speaker and it pretty much made watching movies worse than just listening in stereo. Once the KSC showed up... much better. And when my sub finally got hooked up, I just threw in Gladiator, sat on the couch and couldn't stop smiling. Now my HT is the envy of my friends (im just one year out of college) but it's not helping me pull the women. one time i hooked up my DVD player through my VCR just to see what would happen and the whole bright to dark thing happened to me. it sounds dumb, but make sure you dont have the DVD plugged into the VCR. im guessing this isnt the problem, but just my 2 cents. just take all the stuff back and throw it at the store manager, then when he/she wont take the equipment back because its damaged, give 'em the old 1-2 and hope they dont sue you... ------------------ Denon 1601 Sony VCR, DVD, CD Changer (all from Best Buy... that means its the 'Best') Philips CD Burner Panasonic 32" TV KSB 3.1 KSC-C1 KSF-S5 KSW-12

here's a question that's almost related... i have a 12 ft subwoofer cable that ended up being too short and instead of returing it, i kept it just incase i move any time soon. anyway, is there a huge fundemental difference in a subwoofer cable and a coax-digital cable? i am thinking about taking my optical cable from the DVD and using it for the CD player while going coax(subwoofer cable) out of the DVD into my denon 1601. will the sub-cable do the job? or are they too different? also, i currently have my CD player hooked up to a stand alone burner through the optical cable. is there a splitter for optical cable? thanks

the REM video is probably "imitation of life" off of their Reveal album. get this album for the summer, a great one to listen to with the windows down and the sun shining. to me, all of REM's albums are listenable. you have to remember that after Monster, Bill Berry left the band for personal reasons (New Adventures in Hi-Fi was mostly recorded during the Monster tour, i believe). sure he was just the drummer, but he was one of the core members. when he left, REM remained but was a totally different band. if you look at REM before berry left and after, they are obviously very closely related, but they are two different entities. the new version "REM Mach II" so to speak (spinal tap reference implied) is more experimental. they have gone away from live drums on their albums because basically they dont have a drummer, yes they have someone to play live, but he's not really part of the band; more of a permanent session player. now that you've gotten as much REM as you can stand, ill stop.

spring for the KSB 3.1 or the SB 3's. you wont be sorry. i have the 3.1's and love them. i still need a sub, but no complaints. ive seen the 3.1/3's for under half retail on e-bay every once and a while. save up and grab a pair. for surrounds, i would think that the 1.1's would work reasonibly well. i like the three-sided speaker design(sorry, i dont remember the technical name). the sound you hear from them is harder to pinpoint instead of going "hey the speaker is right... there" sound you ger from "normal" speakers. as far as a sub. ive been researching that here and have found that most people would suggest the KSW-12 over the -10, but there are people who know a heck of a lot more about subs than me. there's even some older 8-inch subs floating around out there and it was suggested to me to grab two of them if i could. who knows? in my opinion, i think the 1.1's would be great speakers for a bedroom or kitchen or something... or a nice little HT setup for a small apartment. although i have never heard the 1.1's, i did demo the 2.1's and 3.1's. there was a huge difference between the two models and i went with the bigger ones. havent been sorry. ---------------- Denon 1601 KSB 3.1 Front KSC-C1 Center KSF-S5 Surround
