  1. Hello all, After living in a 2-level apartment with a basement, I am now moving to a 2nd floor apartment. With the basement, I never worried about the sound from my HT booming out into my neighbors residences. Now that im going to be living above someone, I want to do the right thing to be a good neighbor. My system is as follows: KSB 3.1, KSC-C1, KSF-S5(?), and a KSW-12. All of this is run through a Denon 1601. Is there anything out there on the market that will prevent the low frequencies from my sub from going downstairs? I can't really afford a $1000 dollar piece of plywood, but any DIY suggestions are fair game. I dont listen to my system at bowel shaking levels, but I do like to have the full sound that my system can deliver. I did a search of the Subwoofer forum and couldnt find anything regarding similar situations, so any help would be appreciated.
  2. saving private ryan is a great choice for #1. when i first saw it, i was 20 and just sat in my room afterwards in disbelief. i couldn't (and still can't) imagine going through a war. band of brothers (and the related documentary about Easy Company shown on Veterans Day) did the same thing for me. two movies that i cant help but smile at the end of are the shawshank redemption and amelie. you wont find too many scenes more powerful than andy dufrane basking in his freedom after escaping from shawshank. i get goosebumps. and for amelie, its just a 'warm fuzzy' of a movie.

    The Others

i think its funny, because 15 minutes into the 6th sense i knew the 'secret'. for me it was way too obvious and i left the theater going, "well it was ok" when everyone else was peeing their pants with shock. with the others, it wasnt a shocker, but i didnt see it coming. still a very entertaining movie. those footsteps running across the celing sounded real in my apartment. i thought one of my roommates was running across the room upstairs. the devil's backbone... if you havent seen it, do. i really enjoyed that movie.
  4. I know this doesnt answer your question but... In my experience, above average stereo is much better than ok HT. Just a thought ------------------ Denon 1601 Sony VCR, DVD, CD Changer (all from Best Buy... that means its the 'Best') Philips CD Burner Panasonic 32" TV KSB 3.1 KSC-C1 KSF-S5 KSW-12
  5. Here's a thought. Deal with it. My roommate in college used to listen to his stereo inside our room at all hours of the day and night (we didnt get along too well). Just learn to tune it out, over time you'll be sleeping through those false fire alarms! If the neighbors are still being loud, bombard their rooms with water baloons at around 3 in the morning. Often times a good swift kick right next to the latch on those sturdy old dorm doors will open them right up as long as there's no deadbolt... but you didnt hear that from me. ------------------ Denon 1601 Sony VCR, DVD, CD Changer (all from Best Buy... that means its the 'Best') Philips CD Burner Panasonic 32" TV KSB 3.1 KSC-C1 KSF-S5 KSW-12
  6. tenanbaums... all i can say is very odd humor. when i saw it in the theater, my friends and i were chuckling through the whole movie while everyone else was silent. they just didn't get it. do yourself a favor, watch BOTTLE ROCKET and RUSHMORE before you see the TENANBAUMS. if you didnt know, wes anderson (the director) and owen wilson (eli cash) wrote all three movies. while the movies are not related, all three make more sense after viewing them. you get a better handle on the humor of the writers. also, these movies have staying power (at least for me) i own all three and they get funnier the more i watch them. BOTTLE ROCKET's dialogue, RUSHMORE's absurd reality, and TENANBAUM's handfull of perfectly cast actors all in what are more or less bit parts telling an odd story... good good stuff ------------------ Denon 1601 Sony VCR, DVD, CD Changer (all from Best Buy... that means its the 'Best') Philips CD Burner Panasonic 32" TV KSB 3.1 KSC-C1 KSF-S5 KSW-12
  7. best buy had a progressive scan player from panasonic i think. it was right around $300. ------------------ Denon 1601 Sony VCR, DVD, CD Changer (all from Best Buy... that means its the 'Best') Philips CD Burner Panasonic 32" TV KSB 3.1 KSC-C1 KSF-S5 KSW-12
  8. moon, FYI there's a place down in salem called 'hear no evil' and they have been great to me. im not sure if they're still a klipsch dealer (my cousin told me they were dropping them) but they are the only high-end store in the greater salem area and possibly better than most places in portland. i cant remember what brands of amps they carry, i just bought speakers there, but i really enjoyed dealing with them. they'll also trick out your car if you want... even neon!!!! ------------------ Denon 1601 Sony VCR, DVD, CD Changer (all from Best Buy... that means its the 'Best') Philips CD Burner Panasonic 32" TV KSB 3.1 KSC-C1 KSF-S5 KSW-12
  9. I concur with ShapeShifter. While I was waiting for my center speaker to show up, I hooked up a cheapo Sony crap speaker and it pretty much made watching movies worse than just listening in stereo. Once the KSC showed up... much better. And when my sub finally got hooked up, I just threw in Gladiator, sat on the couch and couldn't stop smiling. Now my HT is the envy of my friends (im just one year out of college) but it's not helping me pull the women. Who knew? ------------------ Denon 1601 Sony VCR, DVD, CD Changer (all from Best Buy... that means its the 'Best') Philips CD Burner Panasonic 32" TV KSB 3.1 KSC-C1 KSF-S5 KSW-12
  10. one time i hooked up my DVD player through my VCR just to see what would happen and the whole bright to dark thing happened to me. it sounds dumb, but make sure you dont have the DVD plugged into the VCR. im guessing this isnt the problem, but just my 2 cents. just take all the stuff back and throw it at the store manager, then when he/she wont take the equipment back because its damaged, give 'em the old 1-2 and hope they dont sue you... ------------------ Denon 1601 Sony VCR, DVD, CD Changer (all from Best Buy... that means its the 'Best') Philips CD Burner Panasonic 32" TV KSB 3.1 KSC-C1 KSF-S5 KSW-12

    ksb1.1??

the 1.1's are the original, the -1's are the newer version. besides the port being in the back of the speaker and the horn tweeter being larger, i think the speaker is about the same. the grills might be different. with my 3.1's the grill is metal where i've seen grills on the newer stuff that is cloth. sound may be a little better with the new versions since the tweeter is larger, but overall should be comparable. ------------------ Denon 1601 Sony VCR, DVD, CD Changer (all from Best Buy... that means its the 'Best') Philips CD Burner Panasonic 32" TV KSB 3.1 KSC-C1 KSF-S5 KSW-12
  12. i got my KSC-C1 on ubid for $99 plus about 15 shipping. i know its not the SC-1, but i think its a good deal. ------------------ Denon 1601 Sony VCR, DVD, CD Changer (all from Best Buy... that means its the 'Best') Philips CD Burner Panasonic 32" TV KSB 3.1 KSC-C1 KSF-S5 KSW-12
  13. here's a question that's almost related... i have a 12 ft subwoofer cable that ended up being too short and instead of returing it, i kept it just incase i move any time soon. anyway, is there a huge fundemental difference in a subwoofer cable and a coax-digital cable? i am thinking about taking my optical cable from the DVD and using it for the CD player while going coax(subwoofer cable) out of the DVD into my denon 1601. will the sub-cable do the job? or are they too different? also, i currently have my CD player hooked up to a stand alone burner through the optical cable. is there a splitter for optical cable? thanks
  14. the REM video is probably "imitation of life" off of their Reveal album. get this album for the summer, a great one to listen to with the windows down and the sun shining. to me, all of REM's albums are listenable. you have to remember that after Monster, Bill Berry left the band for personal reasons (New Adventures in Hi-Fi was mostly recorded during the Monster tour, i believe). sure he was just the drummer, but he was one of the core members. when he left, REM remained but was a totally different band. if you look at REM before berry left and after, they are obviously very closely related, but they are two different entities. the new version "REM Mach II" so to speak (spinal tap reference implied) is more experimental. they have gone away from live drums on their albums because basically they dont have a drummer, yes they have someone to play live, but he's not really part of the band; more of a permanent session player. now that you've gotten as much REM as you can stand, ill stop.
  15. spring for the KSB 3.1 or the SB 3's. you wont be sorry. i have the 3.1's and love them. i still need a sub, but no complaints. ive seen the 3.1/3's for under half retail on e-bay every once and a while. save up and grab a pair. for surrounds, i would think that the 1.1's would work reasonibly well. i like the three-sided speaker design(sorry, i dont remember the technical name). the sound you hear from them is harder to pinpoint instead of going "hey the speaker is right... there" sound you ger from "normal" speakers. as far as a sub. ive been researching that here and have found that most people would suggest the KSW-12 over the -10, but there are people who know a heck of a lot more about subs than me. there's even some older 8-inch subs floating around out there and it was suggested to me to grab two of them if i could. who knows? in my opinion, i think the 1.1's would be great speakers for a bedroom or kitchen or something... or a nice little HT setup for a small apartment. although i have never heard the 1.1's, i did demo the 2.1's and 3.1's. there was a huge difference between the two models and i went with the bigger ones. havent been sorry. ---------------- Denon 1601 KSB 3.1 Front KSC-C1 Center KSF-S5 Surround
  16. t-man, sounds like a good idea. let me know if you want to part with them. i saw them on ubid the other day for $20 plus about $15 shipping. if something along those lines fits with you i would be interested. AB
  17. just had a real quick question. i know that i need to get a sub in the future but right now i can't afford a nice one and was interested in grabbing a pair of bass shakers to give the feel of bass. the shakers are rated at 4ohm's each(?). yes or no, can i hook these up to my denon 1601 straight away or will i need to find a seperate amp? i dont understand the whole ohm thing and i have tried to grasp what all you guys are saying, but to no avail. if someone wants to give it a try (explain in preschool terms) go for it, but i just wanted to know if i could add these to my setup. KSB 3.1, KSC-1, i forgot my surrounds, Denon 1601
  18. hey... i was in about the same situation a couple months ago. i started out my collection of speakers with a pair of KSB 3.1's and then added a pair of KSF-S1's (or something like that). i finally got the SC-1 a month or two ago and have been enjoying value-priced klipsch bliss. im guessing that your SS-1's would sound just fine by themselves until you added more speakers, namely the SB-3. when i first got my 3.1's i couldnt believe how they great they sounded... until i bought my surrounds and i feel that way again, but im sure ill be blown away when i finally get a sub. i know people in this forum might suggest bigger speakers, but i am amazed at how good my system sounds and i dont even have a sub. so to answer your question, yes, get bookshelf speakers. you'll not regret it.
  19. hey, thanks for the input... ill try to describe the situation a little more in detail. im guessing that the sound im hearing is the disc spinning around inside the player. i can hear the same thing from my CD changer, but since the CD plays from the back of the changer you dont hear it. the sound is not a clicking sound but maybe a "fitt...fitt...fitt" just a constant sound while the disc is spinning. going from chapter to chapter is not audible from my couch, but i can hear it if im sitting next to the player. my player is a sony from best buy that i bought this past july. (hopefully it doesnt kill itself like ive heard of sonys doing lately) i know that a sony for $180 doesnt compare with a mcintosch or something, but ive been really happy with it. since its relatively new, i dont think that i am or will suffer with any problems associated with early DVD players. most of the heat generated is from my VCR placed on top of the DVD player. there is plenty of circulation space above and around the two machines. i wish i had a picture for you guys. that would make things much easier... so thats where we are now... probably doesnt change the advice already given, but hey, it never hurts.
  20. hello all... in my quest to construct an affordable HT set-up i took it upon myself to build the speaker/tv/component stands by myself. I am happy with how they look and everything, but i am having a small problem. the tv stand has my tv, center channel, vcr, and dvd player. i have the vcr/dvd suspended above the ground by about 4 inches. the floor is pergo(?), fake hardwood, and my problem is that when im watching movies, during quiet parts i can hear the dvd or vcr players' noise. full carpeting is not really an option at this time. i was thinking about cutting a small piece of carpet and placing it underneath the dvd player on the stand. havent done this yet, but does anyone else have suggestions? should i just listen to movies at mindblowing volumes??
  21. thanks for the help... ill be looking out for those subs and will be searching for a center channel (not as hard...). i envy you guys that have all these huge set-ups. im so happy with my meager system, so i cant imagine what some of these other rooms sound like...
  22. ive been in the process of building a small but solid HT system for about two years... its not very easy when you're paying your way through college, but its time to expand my system again. right now, ive got KSB 3.1's for my fronts, KSF-S5's(?)for surrounds and a Denon 1601 receiver. I have just a normal CD changer, DVD player, and VCR all from sony. i have been running everything off of a stereo HK thats about 16 years old, but with the Denon, its time to plan for a sub and center channel. first line of questions: is the opening level center channel suitable for my setup? is it worth the cost to upgrade to the next speaker? if so, what do i gain? second line of questions: will the 10" sub pack a good punch for this system? i can really notice my 3.1's drop out and want to remedy that, but cannot just go out and get an ear-shattering sub or super big speakers. also, will my denon provide enough power to run all of this equipment once i get my system fully assembled? i am guessing i could use the HK for extra power down the line, but will i have to do this? thank you in advance...
