  1. I'm picking up a set of Heresy II's that were built around 1990. I haven't confirmed the serial number to determine the exact age. The seller says they were purchased new for around $800 and that they came new painted flat black. The seller said Klipsch would sell speakers with less than desirable wood painted black for several hundred cheaper than the ones with natural finish. Has anyone heard of Klipsch doing this?
  2. Is the one you bought similar to this set listed on Ebay? Ebay Link
  3. Thanks for all of the input! I really want to experience tubes with my Cornwall II's and my Chorus II's. I'm torn with buying an older unit like the Lafayette that I would end up putting $400-500 into. I'd really like to have an integrated amp, if possible with a phone stage, but I don't really want something that is going to be high maintenance. For the same money I could get a newer Jolida 102B (integrated but no phone stage) or a rebuilt Dynaco ST70 (non integrated). I wish I knew more tubaholics in my area so I could audition some tube equipment to get a better feel for what is the best option for me.
  4. The seller was asking $200 for the amp. He now says he would take $50 off of that because there are issues with one of the channels. From pictures he has sent me it looks to be in good cosmetic condition. How much would it cost to have someone go through it and get it into good working condition? I asked the seller a few questions and got the following response: I just brought it out and it hooked up and there seems to be a problem with right channel. Left working fine, but the right's a little crackly and low volume-I'll take off 50 bucks for that-These older babies are funny, three weeks ago it was working like a charm! Didn't build it, don't know who did- Yes comes w/cover or cage. I replaced the 6bm8 that were in it with a matched quad. The seller lives 3 hours from me, so I want to understand what I'm looking at before I go see the amp. Any input would be helpful.
  5. I have been looking at integrated tube amps to try with my Cornwall II's. Is this a decent unit to use to experiment with tubes?
  6. I bought a lightly used Oppo DV-970HD off CL several months ago and have used it exclusively for 2 channel playback with very good results. I recently hooked it up for SACD playback uing the 5.1 analog outputs and a cheap Sony 5.1 receiver with multi channel inputs. When playing standard 2 channel CD's everyhing was fine. When I played SACD's I noticed some subtle popping in the center channel. I suspected the inexpensive LPS Sony receiver so I swapped the line level center channel wire between the Oppo and the Sony with the line level right channel. The popping now was in the right channel. I then put the wires back to their correct positions. I did some additional low level listening and noticed random low level popping on the rear channels as well. I emailed Oppo about the problem and out of warranty support. Here is my message: I have a 970HD that I have been using for 2 channel audio CD playback. I hooked it up yesterday for SACD playback using the analog 5.1 connections. I noticed intermittent popping on the center channel. I suspected the Sony surround sound receiver so I swapped the Oppo output for the center speaker and the right speaker expecting the popping to stay on the center channel, but the popping moved to the right speaker, indicating the problem is in the Oppo. I then tried a DVD Audio disk and seem to get intermittent popping on several of the channels. Do you have any suggestions? I bought the unit used and assume it is out of warranty. Do you have a repair policy for this type of problem? It's a great unit, just want to enjoy my SACD collection. Oppo sent the following response: Out of warranty repairs for a 970HD is $38 flat rate fee. I would update to the latest firmware, which is available from our site, and try again. Best Regards, Customer Service OPPO Digital, Inc. 2629B Terminal Blvd. Mountain View, CA 94043 Service@oppodigital.com Tel: 650-961-1118 Fax: 650-961-1119 Seems odd that firmware would fix this problem. I checked the latest firmware on the Oppo site and it is the same version installed in my unit. I haven't tried updating the firmware yet. I did replace the Oppo with a Sony DVP-NC685V DVD player with SACD. There is no popping now so the problem is definitely in the Oppo. Has anyone experienced similar problems or have any additional suggestions before I return the unit to Oppo for repair? Thanks!
  7. Groomlakearea51 Thanks for the email and the useful information.
  8. Thanks for the responses, email sent. Larry
  9. I have a pair of Chorus II's in oak and one of them is missing the riser. Does anyone have one for sale or know somebody who can build one? Larry

  11. If you like Tom Waits you may like the biography "Small Change A Life Of Tom Waits" by Patrick Humphries. I picked up a copy at the local thrift store for fifty cents, quite the score.
  12. Thanks for the responses. I did a fair amount of research and concluded that you need a decent quality switching power supply, 12V between 150-300 mA I believe. It sounded like you could damage the amp with too little or too much current. I assume many of the forum memebers have used the T amp. As Carl mentioned the original supply is no longer available, so I'm hoping to find somebody who can give me supplier and part number information for a supply that they have used. Thanks! Larry
  13. I have one of the original Sonic Impact T Amps and want to get an AC power supply for it, anyone want to sell one or have recommendations on what and where to buy? I did some searching on the forums but some of the ones recommended appear to be discontinued. Thanks! Larry

  15. Here is the link to the article I read, scroll down to the section "All Low Cost Wires Are Not the Same" and you'll see the sample of wire that has turned green. Maybe it wasn't OFHC? http://www.roger-russell.com/wire/wire.htm
  16. Have you had any issues with this wire discoloring? I recall reading that somewhere with the home depot wire. I'm guessing it might depend on the humidty in your house but don't know.
  17. Greg Roberts (greg928gts) has a website with some very nice pictures of the 15" Shorthorn. http://www.dcchomes.com/Shorthorns1.html
  18. My local Cancer Aid Thrift Store never has much in the way of audio gear but they have a reasonable recrd section. Records normal price is $.50 per disc, they do half off days once every month or two. They don't have a great selection but usually a fair amount of classical music, quite the score for $.25 per LP.
  19. Gil, as always, thanks for posting. Interesting bit of audio nostalgia.
  20. My ex wife would bite my speakers and the marks looked exactly like yours []
  21. Mark, I don't have any specs on each of the drivers used in the Forte, someone else on the forum may have that info. I also don't have any experience with the Forte. As far as a replacement driver goes, one of the forum members may have one or you might watch Ebay, I believe I've seen Forte drivers from time to time.
