  1. It is the computer. This is the second time it has crapped out and at $200 for the part I am not going to to it again. Not one of Sears/Whirlpools best designs, it regularly lost its mind and became one of those things that cannot be left on without someone around to keep a close eye on it. My favorite was the time it decided to go into cleaning mode and lock the door in the middle of baking a piece of fish. It took a few minutes to realize what was happening; talk about blackened fish!
  2. I have two Yaqin built amps. The first is a 300B based amp re-branded as Grant Fidelity, the second is a phono preamp. Both are outstanding in both build quality and sound. I have done a bit of tube rolling with them and couldn't be happier. If you trust the person who did the "upgrade" to have done it correctly then I think you should be happy with the Yaqin.
  3. Love my Grant Fidelity 300B amp. A nice modern amp with remote!
  4. Thanks for the replies but it looks like my plans have been put off for a while anyway. Last night the 10 years old electric range died, so instead of a toy for me it looks like I am off to Sears. []
  5. I am being greatly tempted by a used Sophia Electric Baby integrated amp that I would use with my La Scala speakers. I have read some good reviews about this amp, but does anyone here have any experience with this?
  6. Well, maybe I will wait on this. I am not trying to cure any problems, just curious. I wonder if this is a better mod for people who like it load (the ringing issue), as opposed to moderate listening levels.
  7. I have had mine now for 4 years and the new speaker fun hasn't worn off yet. In fact as I have tweaked the system to get the most out of them it just gets better and better. Enjoy![ip]
  8. I was reading an earlier post regarding the K-401 horn and it was mentioned how it is an inexpensive item and a nice upgrade from the earlier metal K-400 horn. Can anyone who has done this change share their thoughts on sound and ease of installation. Is it as easy as unbolting the old K-400 and dropping the K401 in, or is there some modification that would need to be done to my 1976 K-horns or the K401 horn itself?
  9. As someone who makes a living playing it is certainly not for the money. Although I truly enjoy listening to music on my system, it is a little like porn, exciting perhaps, but playing with a good orchestra is like a night with a beautiful women. When the concert is over you leave with a smile on your face and completely satisfied (for a little while). []
  10. A very good and free program for ripping CDs is Exact Audio Copy. It will allow you to rip to almost any format, esp. the lossless format called FLAC. You can then import the files into the media player of you choice.
  11. For sure, many don't realize how important it is to the sound and musical quality of both the La S and K-horn that they are entirely horn-loaded from top to bottom. I couldn't agree more. That is also the wonderful thing about a horn loaded sub. My tuba table blends seamlessly with the La Scala speakers so that I can't tell where the La Scala ends and the subwoofer takes over. It works quite well for music and movies; there is quite a lot of low musical content, esp. in newer recordings that the La Scala can't cover, and tons of very low stuff even my K-horns can't play, though the k-horns kick a** for music. 12. I have done the A/4500 and BEC tweeter route for both my k-horns and La Scala speakers and been very pleased. The best part was that I have been able to sell the old crossovers and tweeters for almost the cost of the upgrade. There are a lot of good mods for these speakers but this one is a good bang for the buck.
  13. I have a Technics 1200Mkii as well, a great sounding table in my opinion, and built to last the decades. I picked up a Clearaudio Aurum Beta Mk.2 on Audiogon a couple of years back, and have really enjoyed it, esp. since I moved to a tube preamp. I also have the Shure M97xE, and it is a very good value, but the Technics is a good enough table for a high end cart as well. I recently moved my good system to the basement where I set up a dedicated listening area, and I forgot just how heavy the Technics is until I picked it up. What a beast!
  14. How about a little love for Acoustic Research speakers. I inherited my parents AR-11s a couple of years ago, and they sound quite nice with a similar vintage (mid to late 70s)Yamaha amp driving them.
  15. Yes, I have them sealed. I think the reduction of bass is due to the room not being as live. As the night went on the more I listened the more I liked it. When listening to the k-horns in their upstairs room I could feel the floors vibrate, a feeling absent on the basement concrete. The walls and ceiling are also insulated in the basement room. I think that livelier upstairs acoustic actually exaggerated the bass a bit and that was what I was used to. As I mentioned earlier the bass seems a bit more clean in the basement, perhaps in comparison it was a bit boomy upstairs? I wound up staying up past midnight listening at a pretty good volume, something I haven't been able to do except once a year when my wife takes the kids to visit relatives on their spring break. It was a hard choice to move the speakers as they looked and sounded great in their former location, but I think I am going to really enjoy this new set up!
  16. Well, I got them down in the basement yesterday and hooked up to my good amp as of tonight. Initial impressions are 15-20% less bass, but perhaps tighter bass. I am not sure imaging is as good, but everything sounds somehow cleaner and tighter. Must be the room. It is fun to be listening to them at good volume at 11:30pm. I will get the turntable hooked up tomorrow and see how that sounds. I am having fun. []
  17. One of these days for sure, in walnut. []
  18. I have a friend with an appliance dolly. My plan is to take them down and give a listen, if I like it they stay, if not then back up they go! Right now I have a pair of AR-11s down there hooked up to an Yamaha Cr-2020 receiver. The sound is pretty good so I am optimistic about the k-horn sounding good there too. I just don't want to have to haul them back up the stairs if it doesn't work out. I just hauled an old Konica pro copy machine out of the basement and it was no fun.
  19. Thanks for the replies. I will let you know the results when get them down there in a week or so.
  20. My project this month has been rehabbing my basement. The section I have finished has a perfect layout for K-horns and I am wondering what I should expect if I decide to move my k-horns from their current location which has a wood floor covered by wall to wall carpet, to the basement which is concrete covered by carpet. They sound absolutely spectacular where they are, but I don't get to really listen to them as much as I would like because they are situated directly below my kids bedrooms. The basement is well insulated so I should be able to listen when I want. It will be a bear getting them down there, so a little advice please!
  21. Saw this picture and had a good laugh! This thing looks ready to bury that RC-7. Really fantastic looking, hope it sounds as good as it looks.[]
  22. Apple lost me when when I couldn't get I-tunes to play FLAC files.
  23. I have a Niles Audio DPS-1 which allows me to switch between two different amps. It woks quite well for 2 but I have not seen anything that would go to 10 amps, that sounds like something that needs to be custom or home built, esp, if you want high quality.
  24. I really like the sound of 1970s Yamaha gear with Klipsch speakers but you might have a bit of a double whammy going on. Unless you have had the CR-420 worked on it could use its caps replaced, and probably the same goes for the La Scalas. I have a "refreshed" CR-2020 that sounds amazing with my K-horns, and a CA-1010 that is in need of refreshing and the difference is very noticeable. Address those two and I think you should be pleased with the result.
