  1. Those look like some sweet amps. Where are you located? I'd love to hear them with RF-7's. Over 100 watts of tube power? Now we're talking. ^ Me too. It would be very interesting to hear how the 7's sound with that much tube power.
  2. From my perspective, all of the bugs are trivial firmware issues. The more I listen to the UMC, the more I REALLY like it. Sound quality is outstanding from every angle. Having had the LMC, MMC, and a couple of Onkyos, it is in the next notch of sound quality. Worst case scenario would be sending it back within 30 days if you just didn't like it for some reason. On a side note, how do you like your XPA-2 versus the XPA-5? How you done a direct comparison of them with the mains? I had contemplated getting either two XPA-1 monoblocks, or an XPA-2 to run along with my X-5. I would have to hear a 'real' difference to justify the extra space and $$.
  3. Yes, he's the man! [H] If only MacGyver had an iphone in his hayday...
  4. Every Motorola phone I've had has been really good with sound quality. I have the iphone 3gs, and it has payed for itself more than once with all of the 'usable' features it is capable of. The mapping software on the phone is top notch. If you are in a good 3g coverage area, you cannot go wrong with it. It REALLY is a one man band in the palm of your hand. ^^ so poetic..
  5. How to properly arrange a surround speaker system.
  6. Mine is also quiet on 7's. Even when watching TV at very low volumes there is no audible noise. I do know what you mean by annoying. My old LMC-1 hissed but was bearable. What other equipment have you ran with the lascalas? Just curious seeing how sensitive they are. On a side note... I have noticed quite a difference how much better the UMC sounds since the firmware upgrade. Most noticable with Dolby D while watching HD TV programs.
  7. ^^Pino Palladino. If you ever get a chance to watch him play with John Mayer(John Mayer Trio), do so. He is a hell of a player. The drummer was kinda limp wristed to me though. It was kinda hard to watch Roger. He plays small riverboat casinos now. Great nostalgia, he just doesn't have the voice anymore which is a real shame because they have such iconic songs. I was just waiting for a viagra or cialis commercial to scroll across their stage![]
  8. I cannot speak for your amp, but my XPA-5 really brings my 7's to life. Headroom and clarity out the rear. But with that being said, I've also heard the emo LPA-1 running a set of 7's that also brought them to life.
  9. ^^ You are very right about needing the 'party' mode. Even the older LMC has an all channel stereo option. The one thing that I do not completely understand about Emotiva, is how they have been developing this new processor for over 2 years and have still left out some of the finer details. Some firmware updates are to be expected, but I just wonder who the beta testers were and what the heck they were doing with the unit? Not critisizing Emo at all since such a smaller company put out a potentially market changing product. A huge undertaking as well with all of the license headaches and especially the whole hdmi monster! Except for the bitstreaming, I think hdmi is a pita...
  10. You're right on about the sound quality Fish! After just several hours of listening, it does sound real sweet. And dare I say smooth. This is the first time I've been able to bit stream DVD-A or SACD from my Oppo and how great it is. My analog 7.1 inputs also sound very, very good. I think the UMC is also first rate on the analog side of things as well. I can certainly attest to this since I've been using my Oppo directly into my amp for several months now. It doesn't get anymore 'analog' than that. I've ran into several bugs that are not of any real issue seing that a firmware update is coming next week already. That is first rate customer service as well. The only bug that really bothers me is that the EMO-Q is quite a ways off in determining the speaker calibration. I have set everything up manually, but it would be nice if the EQ option would respond correctly. Especially the sub portion of the EQ. As it stands now, the sub EQ portion is non-responsive until the firmware upgrade next week. When the sub EQ works correctly, it will be impossible to find this much at the $699 price. Listening so far: Eric Clapton. 461 Ocean Blvd. SACD: mmmm smooth! Norah Jones. 2007 Austin City Limits DVD in DTS: The range of her voice can put everything through its paces. Great performance. Yes. The Yes Album CD remaster: I played this through both the analog inputs and bitstream. Clarity out the wazoo. Moe. Live at the Fillmore DVD in DTS. Sorry, currently listening to this as I type.... very nice indeed.... [D][H]
  11. Absolutely. Especially since this is the 'Home Theater' section!
  12. Fair enough... I only spent roughly 1 hour with my UMC after getting everything hooked up yesterday. I've also had the LMC and MMC as well. First impression is that the UMC is light years ahead of the previous processors! For $699, there are layers of options. More versatile than any of the higher end receivers I've seen. Sound quality was very smooth right out of the box. By no means am I a emo fanboy. I'll tell whether it's good or not. I think this is a real winner and I'll give more opinions of it in a few days.
  13. If Fish = Fishy, then what the heck does JW = ? Any guesses? []
  14. Yes, the 7's are a great speaker. Emotiva makes a great amp too! I'm not sure of the whole 'turning upside down' thing, but whatever works in your scenario. If your set-up situation ever changes, you really would be amazed at how pulling the mains out from the wall 2 feet or so will sound. The entire frequency range really opens up. But for now, rock on![H]
  15. That is my favorite on In The Flesh. Jon Carin nails the part perfectly!
  16. They sure can bring the funk! From what I understand, most of these guys are session musicians from the Nashville area who have and do play with some of the top grossing acts in the country. The horn section is very, very good.
  17. I have had both of these subs at the same time. They are both really great for the price. I had them both running at the same time, and I also A-B'd them using several different types of music to see the differences in them. In my short conclusion, the rw-12d is a clear winner for many reasons. The components are obviously better, the cabinet is much nicer and will match the other reference speakers nicely, the top mounted digital control is nice when making adjustments. Last but certainly not least, sound quality is better with the rw. I did not notice any difference in the down versus front firing configuration on my carpeted floor. The sub 12 does a great job but tends to be a little boomy at times. This is especially noticable if you will be mostly using it for music listening. Not dissing the sub 12 at all since I currently have one that I picked up new in the box for $200 via craigslist! The rw-12d can be had for an easy $500 on ebay new in the box. The extra $150-$200 more for the rw will be well worth it, in my opinion of course. Just to take it a step further, I personally liked the rw-12d better than the rsw-15 that I also had for awhile. The ported design of the rw-12d played the very low octave stuff with much more authority. Those two subs together would make a great combination.
  18. I was going to post this back around halloween, but totally forgot. After hearing them again today, they just crack me up. KRAUT!
  19. Hey what's up SWL, uh, I mean ear jr... [6][]
  20. Cool. That is a great price on that sub. Does the RT play the low end stuff without sacrificing db's?
  21. I was also curious as to how the RT-10 sounds myself. Anyone have some comparisons?
  22. The calibration mic that comes with the JL is what I was referring to. The sub I listened to constantly moves from dealer to dealer, so it was probably messed up somewhere along its travels...
  23. Ok, I must now eat my words... Well, most of them![] The JL was pretty impressive once, uh, cough, cough, set up properly. It was atleast half as much more loud, and played low like I originally had anticipated. The BG still sounded smoother and more natural to me. Definitely more 'audiophile' sounding. It was a little less loud at high volumes, but clearly impressive for a 10" woofer. I never would have guessed it. Less boomy would be a nice description.
  24. I'm just going in to see if it's worth my time to even bring it home. He did offer to bring it and the other sub I mentioned to my house. If the JL sounds like I anticipated it would, I'll be bringing it and the BG sub back for a listen.
  25. *UPDATE* The dealer where I auditioned the JL called me today and said that after the factory rep came by, they discovered the set-up mic was messed up. Apparently the mic was only allowing 150hz and up to be played. Obviously this is why I was so disappointed in the lack of performance. I'll be going in next week to give it another listen hopefully returning with a much different opinion! TheEAR, you were exactly right about the newb dealer, even though this guy has been around enough to know better!
