  1. Yep, LaScalas are fantastic speakers. they really sound great. I DO have neighbours, and I can tell you they enjoy the sound as much as I do...lol Chances are you'll never sell them. the day you'll need deeper bass, just buy a (good!) big sub. until then, enjoy!! And keep browsing the Klipsch forum.
  2. Those 901's could make fantastic surround speakers in a big room. I like the design, I actually like the fact they're "different". But i never heard them. In fact the whole story about bose is that their products are designed for another kind of people. for example, my best friend's father has a huge modern villa, with a B&O system driving Bose cubes and subs in every room. Not hi-fi, not audiophile, but fills the house with music nonetheless. I couldn't live with them, tho!

Its not until I take them out and reconnect the K tweeter do I realise how much better they are. Are they louder--maybe that's part of what I like. I use the Type A crossover with Hovlands and no bass inductor.I say try em. thanks Al. tim ---------------- I agree with the fact that they sound WAY better than the K77. it's not a "tizz" treble anymore, it has real substance, you can feel the grain of every instrument playing, it's marvelous. The only problem is integrating them. i moved them around 8inches back from the front, and now they don't seem too loud anymore. But the stereo image is somewhat left-right now. I think the problem is when sitting a few inches back on a reflective surface I get a problem with first reflections of sound. that's why I don't have a good stereo anymore. I should stick some acoustic foam or something on the midrange horn's upper lip to prevent the sound of the tweeter to reflet and diffract on it. I think it will solve the problem )

I usually turn off the sub for music listening and turn it on for movies. I was wondering what crossover points others use as well as how the phase is adjusted. The sub is placed on the front wall between the speakers which are located on corners. ---------------- strange... why turning the sub off for music? The Scalas don't go low in the bass; they stop at around 50Hz. most music can benefit from deeper bass response... if your sub is set-up properly, it shouldn't make the sound more "muddy".
  5. One thing is sure: they look the part, and make my scalas look a lot more impressive and stylisch than with the K77. Looks like a more expensive pair of speakers. I'll post some picts ASAP
  6. I won't get rid of them. i like them a lot. The thing is - at least in my room with my system- they seem to be very sensitive to their placement relative to the mid and bass horns. It already sounds a lot nicer. also I'm using silver hybrid wire between them and the x-overs; maybe it makes them sound louder. They're not supposed to be louder than the T35; measurements made by Al K. and others show they are rather one or two dB less loud...
  7. OK OK... just installed my new CP25 tweeters on my scalas. Well, I must say I'm not totally convinced. they sure sound great. They sure sound better than the T35 / K77. Cleaner, more detailed, smoother, ad they don't distort at all when played very loud. BUT they also sound LOUDER. They're not supposed to; I suspect it's because thy're brand new, or because of the different dispersion pattern. or maybe they overreact with the modded AA x-over. Maybe I should just remove the 1uF bridging cap. The overall sound is rather ear-piercing to say the least. It also seems that putting them 8 to 10 inches backwards helps integrating them. Al, what do you think?

You would think with the exception of the bass, that they would sound near identical -- but they don't. Still, the LaScala has it's own intoxicating flavor. I like the industrial version because I think it might be more rigid -- which is a good thing. Then you have a top which is completely isolated from the bottom -- another good thing. Lastly, with a good refinish job -- it would look really cool too. I actually think they would match up well with your EL-34s. ---------------- What's GREAT in the split industrial version is that if you plan to tweak it later by using different midrange horns and tweeters, you can do so without having to actually modify the stock cabinet. You just remove the top cab and build your own.
  9. Of course, Kenwood also makes pretty ****ty products. All japanese major brands do. but they have the power to make a highly evolved, high-end sounding product at a not-so-high-end price. that Kenwood player won quite a few prices if my memory's correct. At least that's why i got interested in the model. And it really, really sounds great. there's a "vintage" hi-fi shop ,near my flat; the guy is sold on vinyl and doesn't like CD-players at all. well this guy told me once that the Kenwood DP7090 was one of the few CD player he could listen to.
  10. i'd say no matter the technology, it's the result that matters. I've owned quite a few amps; only one (cheap) PP tube amp I didn't like at all. Sounded "muddy". i'v been sold on low power SS amps "made in UK", Musical fidelity and the likes. I've owned pure class A amps too. And now i'm using a big Japanese high end SS amp from beginning eighties. Two years ago i would have trusted people who'd have said to me "old japanese SS amps are crap"; however now i only trust my ears. Only to say that no matter what's inside the amp; you'll know if you like it the moment you'll listen to it. there's no "miracle" recipe.

  12. I'm about to "relook" my Scalas. First step will be to build a box around the EV SM120 mid horns and the Beyma tweeters. For now they're just sitting on top of the bass horn, wich isn't too ugly but the x-overs and drivers are unprotected against dust and other agressions. finish will most likely be a "pro" matt grey, with a "velvet" or textured finish, matching the color of the bass horns. I was wondering if I could spray paint the midrange horns the same color as the box, so that it would look like it's part of it. Would painting the midrange horns (and maybe the tweeter horns too) affect the sound in any way? Also, I'd like to find some Klipsch logos to stick on the front. Where could i find some? any thoughts welcome Frans
  13. Maybe beyma only exports the 8 ohms version to the US... I'm in Europe, Belgium. Cheaper here, too Anyways, i'm glad I made the good choice. They arrive on wednesday. Curious to hear how they'll sound. Subwoofer project is delayed to... as soon as possible
  14. Yet another Beyma CP25 related question: just ordered a pair by phone. then, after ordering, the salesman asked me: "you needed the 8ohm version, right? They are also available in 16ohms and 4ohms versions" I said "Yes, 8 ohm" But now I'm confused. Was the 8 ohm version the one I needed? Is the original K77 / T35 an 8ohm speaker? I'm using the AA network. thanks...
  15. You can get a kenwood DP7090 second hand on the cheap. i'm using one and I love the sound, after playing with other players including NAD. It was kenwood's top flight player and features four BurrBrown chips on each channel; plus it's a beautiful machine.
  16. Nice informative post. Arkytype, did you remember if the k55v/511B/beyma CP25 sounded "too soft" when still using the AA network? I'm using EV SM120 mid horns, would like to upgrade the tweeters... i find the T35 rather harsh and a bit too loud on some music now that i modded my AA x-over (1uF bypass x-over) But that said, I like some "bite" in the treble and don't want my scalas to sound overly soft. knowing that I wont upgrade my x-overs before a long time, should I still buy some CP25? What's your advice?

  18. What amp / source are you using? This might be the reason of the relative "lack" of treble with the CP25... In my configuration, the highs seem to be rather too "hot" with some music... I may buy the Beyma tweeters now instead of the sub because there are a few parties coming in my house the next weeks and I'm afraid of burning tweeters (seems to be a dumb reason but i know my flatmates will really shake the house with the scalas and as i removed the Zener diodes it scares me..) I think the Beyma CP25 can handle a lot more power than the EV T35... geez... I wih i could find a set of used CP25 so i can resale them the same price in case I don't like them...

Swapping tweeters will yield some difference, but not nearly as much as the bottom end. On the Beyma tweeters, are you thinking of putting them on top of the cabs? I've got a pair of CP-25's sitting on top of my Khorns. I'm working on some little bases for them, and so sometimes have them on and sometimes listen to the K77's. I have to say that while I'm fond of hearing a different high end sometimes, I can't say I'm completely sold. One of the things I've been learning, slowly, is that sometimes what I think is better is just different. Sometimes those K77's sound cleaner, to my ears, than the Beymas. ---------------- Interesting, what you said about the CP25. that's exactly what i'm afraid of: buying them then discovering that I prefer the sound of the K77. I'm thinking about swapping the tweeters because I already swapped the midrange horns (EV SM120A), and I'm very very happy with the sound I got from those high dispersion horns. it really made my Scalas sound ten times better; I hope to get the same result from new, wider dispersion tweeters. As for tweeter placement, due to the size of the new mid horns I had to get rid of the top high-mid box (remember my Scalas are the pro version splitted in two sections); the midrange horns simply sit on top of the bass horns, and the tweeters sit on the upper "lip" of the mid horns. it doesn't really look like a laScala anymore Anyways the sub is a very tempting add-on (tho I can't say I really need any more bass... it's already wallshaking; just want to extend it as low as possible.)
  21. OK i just read the other posts. So what's the big deal? Can't we JUST talk about audio? Without insulting eachother? Can't we just talk about other forum members without using surnames such as "the parrot"? This is just too ridiculous to handle. But i won't leave the forum, unless Klipsch starts producing Bose cubes
