  1. Mike, I answered your question, where you first asked it. Under Technical Questions, Difference between LaScala & K-Horn. I thought I said something to upset you. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  2. JMON, I just read this. I never did that type of finish,so I just now painted a board with some gloss black paint that I have. I'll give this board two maybe three coats of this gloss black, sanding between coats. Later next week I have to spray up a natural oak fireplace mantel that I'm making for someone. I'll be using clear satin lacquer on it, and I mean clear.A lot of lacquers are milky or greyesh in color. When I spray the mantel, I'll also give this board three coats of this lacquer. This will give me a good idea what it would look like with a gloss lacquer on it. I only use satin lacquer on my stuff, so I don't have gloss. I'll let you know what I think of the finish. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  3. Klipschorn mains, LaScalas for front & rear centers, two Jensen Imperials & two LaScalas for the rear. LaScalas for the front effect channels. I have been using a Sunfire Sig. for two years now. I keep it set at about 45Hz & 0 db on it's volume control. I like it,and think that it blends well with the Klipschorns & Imperials. The Imperials are back loaded horn cabinets that have a little more in the bottom end then the K-horn. Even with this system you have to have light fingers on the Sunfires volume control. It can get way to loud. I live on the spase cost, & when the shuttle takes off it rattles the garage door & all the windows in the house. The sunfire can do the same thing with those special effects in the movies. It is life like and realistic sounding. There is no booming sound, It's so natural sounding you really don't notice what it's doing in the room. But go in the garage or a back room in the house while watching a movie ,and everything is vibrating to it's low rumble sounds. I have to turn down it's volume even more on some bass heavy CD's. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  4. Mike, Only, if when I drive thru Oviedo to my sister in laws home, you let me stop by and give your system a listen to. I neen an excuse or reason to get out of their house for a while when I'm there . Would like to hear that SVS sub. They live off of Red Bug RD. I live about 10 minutes south of the Merritt Island exit, off of the Bee Line. If I'm up to moving things around when you come, You can compare the LaScala & Klipschorn as I discribed. Without the tweeter & mid range driver, you can really notice the difference in them that way. Then you can comment on it, so the members of this B.B. won't think that I'm nut's. I finally got around to trying out AL's network, which I just put away about 8 month's ago when I bought it. I can't comment on it, because he has them fuse protected & the fuses blew when I turned up the volume. So I did my listening & comparing with some other spare LaScala networks that I have. I was using a Klipsch K33E in the University folded horn with AL's network. I wanted to try to compare apples to apples & just hear the cabinet differences between this University & the LaScala. I know one thing now, anyone using LaScalas that don't have corners for the Klipschorn, should build this cabinet and just put all the LaScala drivers in it. It sounds very similar to the K-horn. John Warren, If your reading this thanks for the plans. Gil, If your reading this, I will be sending you the plans with some pictures of the assembly. Al uses a 1-1/4 amp fuse in his networks. Maybe it should be a 2 amp. I'll have to ask him about this. Mike, The bad news is that you will have to wait untill after Christmas to come over. I'm really busy right now. 5. I've been doing some comparing with folded horns this week. For those of you that don't know.I have 2 pairs of K-horns, 3 pairs of LaScalas, 1 pair of home built Jensen Imperials, and now a pair of the University Classic folded horns. I just finished building the University Classic last week. That's why I'm comparing again. If you Have K-horns and LaScalas, disconect the tweeters and mid range drivers from both and give a listen. The LaScala sounds like it has blankets stuffed in it's mouth compared to the K-horn. It's not nearly as clean & detailed as the K-horn. or the Imperial & University for that matter. It's making me think that it may be time to get rid of the LaScalas. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  6. You don't need to do any wood working. Turn them upside down & unscrew the bottom piece of plywood. Now you can reach in & unscrew the woofer. Order a K-33E from Klipsch for $100.00 . Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  7. Theres a Rx-v2095 on ebay for $400.00 Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  8. I would stick with the K-horns. They will take up less room then the belles, since they are tight in the corners. You won't be happy with the belles lack of low end bass after being used to the K-horns. It's hard to take a step downward from the K-horns. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  9. There should be a washer. It makes an air tight seal and also provides resistance so the driver won't vibrate loose. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  10. O.K., Let me try to explain this again. The first time I heard Klipschorns and LaScalas it was like really hearing reproduced music the way it was ment to be heard.Kind of like taking cotton out of your ears and hearing clearly for the first time. For me they were speakers to die for , and they still are. What I mean by taking them for granted doesn't mean that I enjoy or appreciate other speakers as much or more. Think of a rich man who has everything that he wants.Do you really think that he appreciates what he has? If there was another speaker that I liked more, I would have it.You don't see me offering Any of my LaScalas or K-horns to any of you, do you? I sometimes think that the viewers on this B.B. that don't have LaScalas or K-horns get the idea that they don't sound good unless they are tweaked. That's just our obsession. I want people to understand that they sound great without Al's network, without dampening the mid-range horn, with the V or M driver, without re-wiring them, etc.,etc. . Did we all forget that we fell in love with themjust the way that they came from the factory? I know that I won't stop tweaking and I know you won't stop tweaking eather, It's in our blood. I enjoy listening to them all every time I hit the power switch. I still get goose-bumps, but is that because of the minor mods performed to them? I don't think so! M.H. Just made me think of my first experiences, and impressions. It was better then sex. Then again, maybe I'm not doing that right eather. Just like I'm not explaining myself very well. I'm a man of few words, and trying to explain my feelings isn't easy for me.I spend most of my time readingand learning from the rest of you. Q. P.S Let me clear up one more thing, while I'm at it. Some of you know that I built a pair of Jensen Imperial replicas. Now I'm building an old University design bass horn cabinet. Then I have plans to build some other Vintage bass horns. I'm just curious, and want to hear what some of these speakers sound like. Maybe that's why some of you may have an idea that I'm not satisfied with the K-horn. Just remember the K-horns are still the heart and soal of my home theater system. ------------------ Q-Man
  11. Keith, I think you know what your talking about. Stop using that excuse Don't try it you will end up sanding the veneer off. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  12. My Two Cents You do have to sand between the first coat, and sometimes the second coat when using Lacquer. It will raise the grain in the wood & that needs to be sanded. Unless, you use one or two coats of sanding sealer first. Lacquer will require spray equipment. I've also used Rustoleum Satin Black #7777. It is a good match. It can be sprayed or brushed on. Spraying is better, but you have to do what you have to do. I've also mixed the Satin Black with a little Gloss Black for a little more sheen. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  13. M.H. Concider yourself lucky that you have a dealer there where you can demo them, and for four hours. That's hard to do here in the states. Did you listen to the Klipschorns while you were at it? I listened to my first Klipschorns when I was 12 years old. I was lucky, my next door neighbors father had a pair. I sure did like to go over to his house to play. As I think your finding out, they are one speaker that leaves a lasting impression on you. I had to wait untill I was about 20 yrs. old before I got my first pair of LaScalas. Then in my 40's before I got my first pair of K-horns. With all the tweaking we do on this board, I thing we tend to forget just how great they sound right from Klipsch. We need to step back once in a while and remember our own first impressions. I don't think that any of us could sleep at night dreaming of the day that we would own a pair. I now have 3 pairs each of LaScalas & Klipschorns and sometime I take them for granted. Thanks for letting me see this again through your eyes,or should I say hearing it through your ears. May Heritage live on. Hope that you get them soon. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  14. I agree with the other replies. Buy two K-33E's, you will have an improved low end with them. You don't need the extra power handling capabilites of the K-43. They are 4 ohms, horn loading them brings them closer to 8 ohms. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  15. Well the KG-4 prices got too high for what I think the speaker was worth. I won a pair of the KG-5.5's for $334.00 plus shipping. This was about what the KG-4's were going for. Now I'll see if they like them. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  16. I knew that I shouldn't have said that. I'm talking about a level where the volume can't interfear with the level of your normal speaking voice. Back ground mucic which you have to strain to hear. This is how my system is played when my father visits. When I had enought of this, I turn it up to what I concider to be an accetable low volume where I feel the music comes alive. Then my father will decide to go home. This is still at a level that you can cary on a conversation, but might not hear what the person said 20 feet across the room.( Which is unaceptable to my father.) Me, I think that you should only hear the music. If you want to come to my house to listen to music or a movie don't expect to carry on a conversation with me. I hate that. Shut up, sit back & relax & enjoy. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  17. Ray, thanks for the description. That low level sparkle is very hard to find in a speaker. Sometimes I even feel that my K-horns suffer from lack of it. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  18. Jim, T350 3.5k-23K Hz 99.5db 50 watts Baffe opening 4.88" High, 2.38" Wide magnet weight: 1 lb. This is from one of my old Electro-Voice parts catalogs T35a or Klipsch K77 3.5k-20k Hz in one book, 15.000Hz in another book 96.5 db 20 watts Baffle opening 4.22" high, 1.69" Wide magnet weight: 6.8 oz 8 ohms Q. ------------------ Q-Man This message has been edited by Q-Man on 09-10-2001 at 07:18 PM
  19. Randy, Thanks. I think I'll try a couple & see if I hear any type of improvement or not. Right now I think everything sounds find, but you never know what you have been missing untill you hear it. Kind of like when I first added a sub. Yes , no ceiling corners eather. LaScalas sit on top of the K-horns. Thanks again,Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  20. DD2, Thanks,it sounds like they are just about perfect for this situation. If I were to bring anything too large into their home my father would have a fit. He barrows my sound level meter to bring to his officers club,so he can show the manager that the music is too loud. My mother on the other hand likes to crank it up,but see has to wait untill my father is out of the room. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  21. Ray, Don't waste alot of your time trying to discribe the KG4's, but I would like to know what you think of them. There is about 3 pairs of them on ebay right now. I'm thinking of buying a paid for my mother. Thanks, Q. ------------------ Q-Man This message has been edited by Q-Man on 09-07-2001 at 07:00 PM
  22. RX-V3000, The addition of front effect channels is a must. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  23. I'm not the right person to answer this question, because I would sacrifice anything for K-horns. Build yourself some falce corners if you have the room. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  24. Looking good Randy. You have me thinking about bass-traps. Any pointers on placement? All my corners are taken up with K-horns,so that's not an option. Q. ------------------ Q-Man
  25. I suggested fini's idea to John Albright some time ago, because he to wanted to address this problem. I never heard back from him, so I don't know if he tried it & if he could hear a differance, if he did. It's a solid & simple way to brace the cabinets & the best part is that it's reversable. I suggest you try it & let us know what you think. Q. ------------------ Q-Man This message has been edited by Q-Man on 08-14-2001 at 06:20 PM
