  1. Does this amp take 6350s? If so check these out: http://cgi.ebay.com/72)-4-Vintage-Tung-Sol-Tubes-6350-Radio-TV-Juke-Box-NOS_W0QQitemZ160412743096QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20100315?IMSfp=TL100315161005r8907#ht_500wt_1182 Tung Sol are GREAT tubes and you might be able to pick up some great tubes here for a steal.
  2. I wholeheartedly agree with Gothover about the GoldLions. What preamp (12AX7, 12AU7,!2AT7) tubes are in it now? I can definitely help you out with those within your budget. I have several references of people I've helped here on the forum who had similar needs. Actually I sent some tubes to Gothover so you could ask him. G-man
  3. I hear you! I say a thanks in my heart to Craig everytime I fire my up. They just seem to get better and better as they break in. Can't wait to hear how you like your Thorens, particularly how you like the cartridge and the PS audio Phone preamp. I have some Fisher/made by Telefunken 12AX7s and Brimar 12AU7s I could send you for a test drive in the VRDs. If you like 'em we can talk price, which would be very affordable. If you don't like 'em just send them back. You'd only be out $5 for shipping if you don't like them. You can ask CigarBum as a reference about me. Just trying to help out a fellow VRD owner get the most out their treasures. G-man
  4. Craig at NOSValves could probably mod the Tercel and even with shipping you'd save a boatload of cash and I've heard he makes some killer mods to the Tercel. What cartridge are you going to use?

  6. Thanks for the input. I ordered the Clearaudio Maestro. I love the organic sound from wooden cartridges. I've heard great things about the Scout with the Dynavector 20X. 7. Has anyone heard a VPI Scout and Juicy Music Blueberry with the Cream Option together? If so, how did you like the synergy? Finally what cartridge was used and any recommendations welcome. Thanks
  8. i've heard some people say the cane from Wendell is shiny, i heard a guy sprayed a flat or satin clear coat over the cane to get rid of the shiny synthetic cane...just a thought of course i would experiment with a small section first....

  13. Oldtimer has found a steal for ya'...this a great table!!!
  14. thank you for your reply...it explains everything very well and i appreciate you taking time to do so
  15. why is it so important for us to label things...i'll take a barrett jackson modded '69 Z-28 over an original any day...the complete redo if far superior mechanically to the original...so if i can't call my Camaro a Camaro because it's been modded by barrett jackson, what do i call it then...why if we improve on a good idea does it make it not real? my VRD's came with Valve Art power tubes...now, since i changed them to Tung Sol 6550s are they now not real VRD's? this whole analogy of qualifying an item as real or not serves only to feed the egomanical, obsessive-compulsive types who think that if its anything but stock then its inferior...i'll take my unreal VRD's against any real VRD any day of the week...now i just have to come up with a name for them...judge not lest yea' be judged... price is based on the quality of workmanship, period...
  16. I don't doubt the benefits, but what does your calculations say about about the extra weight causing premature engine and bearing failure?

  18. you can build a record cleaner fairly cheap...all you need is a old record player and a old vacuum cleaner motor, mine cost $36 to build only because i enclosed the vacuum cleaner motor in a wooden box and i bought a used elbow connector and suction tube made by VPI...you can make your own but these work better and they aren't that much when you consider the money you save, button on left side of box turns on vacuum....cleaning fluid applied manually... ...i learned a little from each listed reference... http://www.teresaudio.com/haven/cleaner/cleaner.html http://www.enjoythemusic.com/recordcleaner.html http://www.soundfountain.com/amb/rc1.htmll http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-your-own-professional-record-cleaning-machine/l http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=241633l
  19. Well said Thebes. I use the steam cleaner in conjunction with my homemade RCM and it works very well... it doesn't take a rocket scientist to make your own RCM and they work just as well and save yourself $400...
  20. preamp amp tubes make the Biggest Sonic change Craig uses PentaSCs from an affordability factor as he runs his amps for long periods working in his shop. If money was no issue he'd use Tung Sol 6550 Black Plates per our conversation. if money is no issue then by far the Tung Sol 6550 Black Plates, original Genalex KT88s or G.E.C. KT88s of which i own quads of each...i prefer the Tung Sols only because they sound richer...i've played other power tubes since listening to the Tung Sols and believe me they are all they are cracked up to be...they are followed pretty closely by the GE 6550As which I sold over 40 a few months ago and they were snatched up in 5 days so those in the know, know... i am selling 2 more quads of NOS Tung Sol 6550 Black Plates while they last...i really liked the reissue Gold Lions but have heard some really good things about the Penta Labs SC (make sure they are the SC).....below is a competition i read in a hifi magazine which i concur with mostly except that the GE's should be 3rd on the list VTV 6550/KT88 Shoot Out for Hi-Fi Genalex KT88 Gold Lion 1969 - 4.87 Tung-Sol 6550 1957 Black Plate - 4.77 JJ KT88 2002 - 4.63 Ei KT90 1999 - 4.52 EH KT88 Reflektor 2002 - 4.16 Sveltana 6550 2001 - 4.13 Svetlana SVKT88 2002 - 4.09 Svetlana SV6550C Reflektor 2002 - 3.98 Philips Sylvania 1970s - 3.98 Chinese 6550 Valve Art 2002 - 3.89 GE 6550A 1970s - 3.78
  21. the GE's are a very good tube, but sonic changes occur more dramatically when swapping out preamp tubes
