  2. I'm with UP here. Why does that first photo look soooooo familiar? Help me here... C ------------------ My System
  3. Why can't they all be like this? It's 2002, and yet I popped a CD in last night, and all I heard was hisssssssssssss. A moment of utter panic set in -- could it be my setup??? Hit the pause button -- no hiss. Hit resume...bad hiss. Listened to the end of each track - as the song trailed off, the hiss magically disappeared, and pure silence accompanied the blank spaces between tracks. At least until the next track started up. I mean, c'mon, we can transmit the entire contents of the Library of Congress in under a second, yet the recording studios can't master their recordings to eliminate this nuisance. I guess it all comes down to economics -- why clean up and reissue oldies but goodies with limited appeal when you can churn and burn a new Brittany CD every other week? Besides, the most critical listening these new releases get is on JVC boomboxes or at clubs with dBs set to maximum distortion. 4. Ohhh, I could use that icon as well. I was thinking of Dr. Ray Poincelot. You're right, though, Dr. Bongiorno taught that class as well. Unfortunately, if memory serve me correctly, he passed away while I was still an undergrad, and sadly, at a relatively young age. C ------------------ My System
  5. Ray, I was at Fairfield from 83-87. Ecology, eh? Short guy with a goatee teach your class? I can picture him, but can't recall his name. He was my frosh bio professor, and he specialized in botany and ecology. Way back then I had visions of med school...then I wised up. You've captured the driving experience on the Merritt all too well! I was chuckling out loud at your description. Full stop...gun it...and pray the horses kick in at the right time. For bonus points...try it at night or in inclement weather. Fortunately, my old 280 ZX never let me down... Best, C ------------------ My System
  6. Ray - Point 4 of your previous post resonates all too well with me. I did my undergrad work up at Fairfield University (Merritt Parkway Exit 44). I still visit friends up there from time to time, and there's nothing better than winding through the Merritt on a fall day at 75 MPH. And you're absolutely right, unless you've got something that moves fast, you don't want to mess around with those entrance ramps with the STOP signs at the end of them. OK, we now bring you back to your original program, still in progress... C ------------------ My System
  7. Can't speak to the finish, because my C2's are the black ash finish, which requires only occasional dusting. Assuming you've kept them in a dry location and at normal humidity, I see no reason why they shouldn't function properly. Now if you've left them out in the hot desert sun for three years, that might be a different story. You may want to check/inspect the the woofer and passive radiator just to make sure everything appears intact and is still pliable. As for your ML amp, you'll be damaged more than the speakers if you ever run the amp at full throttle. I run my C2's with a 250 WPC Carver TFM 35x, and rarely pump more than a few watts into them before the room fills with sweet sound. Remember, they are rated at 101 dB sensitivity. As long as you don't drive the amp into clipping you should be just fine, and trust me, you'll never have to with the C2's. Enjoy them...they are great speakers! C ------------------ My System
  8. Gents, So mint condition walnut or oak might put me on the path to black? I'll keep my eyes open for any/all of the above. If you see a black Academy in similar mint condition, please give me a heads-up. Thanks again, Colin ------------------ My System
  9. Shape, I'll keep an eye open for a Walnut one for you, 'cause I'm really looking for one in mint condition in black. This reminds me of an old MASH episode where Hawkeye has to trade with about half a dozen people to get a new pair of boots... Colin ------------------ My System
  10. Congratulations HornEd!!! Glad to see the Academy went to someone in our little Klipsch family...and a highly esteemed member, at that! That music room is going to so sound oh so sweet!!!! Colin ------------------ My System
  11. Here we go again: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1336313091 Why, oh why couldn't it be in the black finish??? Still looking.... C ------------------ My System
  12. Me too, if you swing it. :-) I can just see when Jhawk goes through airport security with a suitcase full of books. Might raise an eyebrow or two! Thanks, C ------------------ My System
  13. HE, ShapeShifter and Dave - Couldn't have described the KLF-C7 experience with my Chorus II's more perfectly. It's an awesome speaker, but has just a bit too much presence vs. the Chorus'. I guess that's why I too will enter the market for an Academy in black finish, mint condition (I can dream, can't I?!) Are the upgrades ever done?? LOL! C ------------------ My System
  14. Hey, HE and Justin, where did you guys get those? Those are nice! Colin ------------------ My System
  15. Daryl, Thanks for the heads up. Happy to toss those freebie mugs from numerous now defunct dot bombs and display my real passion around the office. C ------------------ My System

    Academy

Mark me down for a black one if someone gets the urge to sell theirs (yeah, right) C ------------------ My System
  17. Justin, See my previous post re the matching baluns. Esentially, these are transformers that convert a 75 Ohm cable feed to 300 Ohms (and vice versa). They usually come packaged with your TV. They have an F-pin on end and two spade lugs on the other end. Wire two of them back-to-back in-line with your cable feed. In other words: 1. Take your cable feed and terminate the male F-Pin into a transformer with a female F-Pin connector 2. The other side of the first transformer should have two spade lugs... 3. ...take these two spade lugs and connect them onto the receiving screws of the second tranformer 4. The second transformer should have a male F pin connector at the other end, which you can then plug into your TV or VCR This essentially isolates the group loop and prevents the hum you describe. The parts are available at Radio Shack if you don't have them for about $3 for the two. Hope this helps, C ------------------ My System
  18. Montigue - Yes, absolutely. Colin ------------------ My System
  19. The cheapest way is to put two matching baluns (75-300 ohm converters) back to back in line with the cable TV feed. Insert them at the end of the cable feed which you would normally plug in to your TV or VCR. The more expensive option is the Mondial Magic Box, which is described in more detail in the products section of this website. Hope this helps! Colin ------------------ My System
  20. My advice - try 'em both and see what sounds best. I have seen applications where Toslink is superior to digital coax, because it eliminated the electrical connection between two pieces of equipment and hence removed ground loop hum. In other cases, I've looked on the back of a friend's equipment rack and was amazed the photons could actually bridge the gap between the end of a flimsy Toslink connector and the back of his DAC. C ------------------ My System
  21. Justin, Disconnect the cable TV feed from the back of your TV, plug the RCA from the DVD to the TV, and see if you still have the buzz. If not, you have a ground loop. In this case, the cable TV feed has a different ground than than the electrical wiring in your house, which creates a potential difference. The buzz you are hearing is a symptom of this potential difference. If the buzz is still there, you may still have a ground loop, but it may be more difficult to solve. But let's cross that bridge when we come to it.... Colin ------------------ My System
  22. Yep, the Carver Lightstar was truly the first Sunfire. The Carver TFM 35x I referenced above was modeled after the Lightstar (and sounds remarkably similar), but offered at a price point that the common man like myself could afford. C ------------------ My System
  23. I'll probably get knocked upside the head for saying this, and with all due respect to my learned namesake (whose posts I thoroughly enjoy reading), not all Carver amps sound bad! Granted, the old Magnetic Field Amps that Colin references like the M1.0t and M1.5 were big old brutes that could never be considered truly musical. But Carver evolved with the times, and right before ole Bob himself left, they produced some nice gear. Carver began to get away from Magnetic Field transformers (notorious for hum, especially when paired with highly sensitive speakers) and other crazy gimmicks, and as a result produced some quality sounding solid state amps. I have Carver TFM 35x's paired with Chorus II's and a KLF-C7 front. Granted, I'll never use a fraction of the 250 WPC these amps are rated at. These particular amps have a conventional design (they're not class D), and even eschewed Carver's Transfer Function Modified circuitry (despite the TFM designation) and as a result sound very musical. They're quiet as a church mouse (no mean feat when paired with speakers rated at 101 dB sensitivity). And as for the sound...well, it's warm, and shudder to say...almost tube-like!! If you don't believe me, ask the guys at Stereophile, who commented on its tube-like sound and put it on their recommended components list circa 1996. It's this tube-like sound quality that attracted me to this particular amp, as opposed to the raw power output. One day, I'm sure I'll graduate into the league of tubes ala Colin, Mobile and Mdeneen, but for now, my schedule doesn't permit me to dedicate the time required for the care and feeding of tube amps. One day for sure! Net-net and IMHO, good sound can be had from Carvers, even when matched with our favorite horn-loaded speakers. Consider it pseudo tube sound on a budget. Colin (aka Chickey) ------------------ My System
  24. Justin, You have a ground loop, which is creating the hum. Click below and read the following thread, which may help solve your problem. If not, post back. http://216.37.9.58/ubb/Forum9/HTML/001408.html Good luck! Colin ------------------ My System
  25. My reason - a baby that determines when/if I get sleep and what time is "morning." Today, morning started at 4:53 AM. Course, sitting on dad's lap and looking at the computer, I can only hope she starts to nod off. This bulletin board has been a great companion for those early mornings (and late nights).
