  1. Mike- I just talked to Barbara, sounds like a wonderful grandmotherly type. She confirmed the exchange price. I'm also going to send her the cartridge body to make (Shure) it's a match. Probably be sending it to her Certified Mail. As far as turnaround goes, she said she usually gets things out the same day she receives them. Me living on the same side of the Mississippi River usually means it'll take a few days to get there and a few days back. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 02-15-2002 at 10:59 AM
  2. I don't blame ya James. You could have heated my house for a week with how hot I was when I found out that I couldn't play home made compiled CD-Rs on my newly arrivde McIntosh MVP-841. That was the whole reason I ordered a CD-RW drive the PC! And to think the lowly Carver TL-3100 cd player (14 years old) plays them just fine, the Mac just sounds a hell of a lot better. Since then I've had a resurgence of reviving the Yamaha K-1020 cassette deck and updating the ol' Yamaha PF-800 TT with a new Shure V-15 VxMR and a maybe a seperate phono stage (if I can find a place to put it). ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  3. Sorry- I read something else into the post. I was taking the 'moral standard' approach comparing Ohio and Nevada. But then again Cincinnati is about ten years behind on things. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 02-15-2002 at 12:33 AM
  4. quote: chuckears: WTF is that all about!? Can we see you on TV, or is it an Ohio thing? People that live in glass houses....... ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  5. Gee, wasn't "Color My World" the first piano rif we all learned as a kid? Ahhh, the memories. My youngest brother was playin' around on our piano one day while playing ELP's "Are You Ready Eddie" and hit the bar with the bad playing perfectly. And none of us really can play the piano!! GOD!! was that funny!! ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 02-14-2002 at 02:33 PM
  6. Mystian- Using the writing as a guide to keep things in phase has been my method for a long time. I've only screwed it up once on an internal rewire job I did on my KLF-20's. Fortunatley wire companies don't switch putting the printing on both conductors thoughout the run. As for which is pos and which is neg.? Nope, don't matter. Just keep it consistant. I like to use the printed conductor as pos. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  7. Mike- I gave Shure a call today and the man in the Service Dept. told me that if they still have the parts to have it re-tipped then it would be a flat fee of $60. I did tell him that I'm not sure if the one I have is a V15V or a V15-MR. The one I have has the Shure name on the front of the stylus, black with white (or silver) lettering. When I got the new V15VxMR I found that the original box would be a good place to store the old V15 but it would not fit exactly. Each body of the cartridge looks identicle and both have the big "V" on the front it but there must be some small changes in the dimensions. Please let me know when your comes back. If it matters I've had this (older) cartridge since 1984, if that will narrow down the model number. Sure would be nice to have another V15 as a spare! If all this pans out I'd like to get another headshell from Yamaha (they charge serious bucks for anything) to have mounted and ready to go. Gee that'll make four cartridges in my stable to choose from.... Thanx, ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 02-14-2002 at 02:15 PM
  8. When I was listening to my Pro4AA's after about a half hour it felt like someone was driving a metal spike through the top of my head. Talk about uncomfortable. I still keep them around stored in their original box for posterity sake. That discomfort prompted me to go get a pair of Koss HV1A while still trying to be dedicated to Koss. I think Radio Shack put out these same headphone under the Nova name. Anyway, those didn't last long since the foam rubber ear cup disintegrated. The Sennheiser HD-540's I picked up at an audio store closeout for $60 in 1986 don't sound that bad but the ear cups onthose didn't seal very well against my head. Which is o.k. I can now play the system just about whenever I want. Now I just use them for making cassette tape compilations. Glad to see teh Koss Porta-Pros were mentioned. These things rock on Walkmans and other portables. I do have a neat little item I got from DAK Industries about 20 years ago. It's an equalizer for your Walkman! Pretty cumbersom though with it being clipped to your belt and your body being taken hostage by 1/8" headphone cords ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 02-14-2002 at 04:31 PM
  9. OH NOOO!! Could there be another heated debate?? Phono cartridges need to be broke in too! Thanks guys... ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  10. Mike, I'm pretty sure the V-MR is what I had before. I still have it and wish I could find a stylus for it. It sounded just right to me. Mine's on a TT I've had since it was new, a Yamaha PF-800. Really funky tonearm. It's in two seperate pipes from the headshell to the base. I'm told that it housed each of the left and right signals, I dunno. Thankfully I've also got three Yamaha headshells for this thing, their not the standard mounts at all. The guage I used is an old Ortofon where everything is in metric. It does seem to stick on a measurement, needs a little help to move it. Maybe I'll just order a Shure guage for $20 somewhere. It was tracking at 1.5g, just what the manual calls for while using the static/dust brush. That was before I used the guage. After using the guage the tonearm's weight said it was 1.7g, no matter. At 1.7g it does have a bit more HF but still not as much as the V-MR had. As for a phono stage, it's just using the stock one in the McIntosh C33 preamp. This may sound odd but I do remember putting in one of the back cartridges, in this case an Ortofon VMS-30 mkII, and it started to sound better (not great) after a couple time using it. Would be nice to know if the RIAA setting is self adjusting for the ol' Mack. But then again, I must be dreaming. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 02-14-2002 at 12:11 PM
  11. It's poll time again. What is the worst engineered cd you've heard. Not refering to bad and/or distastefull music but bad recording quality. I'll start- Carole King's Greatest Hits. This thing was definitley mixed on Auratone speakers, a real shame too. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 03-12-2002 at 03:40 PM
  12. O.k. I've seen in more than one place on here that some of you have a Shure V15VxMR phono cartridge. I just got mine today and is it just me or is this thing bass heavy? Not that its a bad thing but not what I expected after retiring my old and trusty V15 Type-V. To find out for shure I guess I'll have to get a couple of those new fangled 180g audiophile pressings ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  13. ED!!! This one might do it, who knows?? http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1332145279 ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  14. I'll admit to once frequenting a pair of AR-11's till the cat used the woofers as a scratching post. Never knew they were 4ohm till recently. Definitley a loss. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  15. WSN- The program's credit show that it was written for Windows 95 in 1997 or so. Guess the programers had no idea XP was going to exist. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 02-11-2002 at 01:09 PM
  16. This may be a vague description but from what's been posted on this BB the KLF-30's have a lot of slam SPL for things such as hard rock. and the RF-7's are a bit more subdued. I've only heard the KLF-10's, 20's and 30's but not the RF Series. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  17. NJK- After you go though all the receiver settings and are convinced everything is where it's supposed to be I would definitely lean on the wall space part of it. I drew up an Excel program where you can keep a good log of SPL at different distances form the wall, both from the side and the rear walls. The test can take a couple hours to do (even longer if the speakers are on carpet). You'll need an SPL meter (Radio Shack and about $38 ?) and a pair of hearing protection type headphones. While performing the test you should definitely turn the treble ALL the way down, not just in the middle but in the negative range. Don't want to burn out a tweeter diaphram. Turn the volume up to your normal listening level and use a testing sign wave cd or pink noise if you have it available. When you have the control setting set, mark that as 0db and don't touch any volume, tone controls or input settings on the SPL meter. This will upset the accuracy of the test. When your done look at the second sheet on the Excel workbook. The highest reading you get will tell you where the most SPL is at, both distance from the side wall and from the rear wall. If you want the file let me know and I'll e-mail it to ya. Good luck, ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 02-10-2002 at 05:06 PM
  18. I'm sure sometime or another everyone has seen the stickers that picture a fish labeled "truth" eating the Darwin fish. Just relable it Klipsch eating Bose. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  19. Speed- Well taken. I used to have a very modest system in my first car but that was after I owned it for five years or so. I had sort of a plan with it though. To drum up memories of music that most people forgot by that time in their lives. It was 70's music (yes, with Disco) coming from a 75' Mercury Montego MX (4,200lbs. worth). Definitley not fast but the period matched between the car and the music. It was only a 60wpc system w/two 6x9 thre-ways in the deck lid. This was from 1986 to 1994. Sure turned a lot of heads sitting at a stop light playing most any seventies dance music I could get my hands on. Oh yea, finding all the records (read 45's) and cd's was another chore since they weren't popular again....yet. Did I mention I have a fair amount of Tinitus in my right ear as a result. Could be from the blast sessions at home with the Sennheiser HD-540 headphones also, my answer when I wanted to blast when I shouldn't have. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 02-09-2002 at 12:14 AM
  20. We're all smiles Jim! Just how does the sound of little feet going pitter-patter around the house sound in 9.1 HT? My best friend just had a little girl two weeks ago. Jessica Rae Thomas. "Rae" after her grand-daddy's middle name, Raymond (RIP). Our best, Tom ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 02-08-2002 at 11:54 PM
  21. Giving credit to both sides of the "argument" try this. If you are using say 12ga. Monster Cable as a single run, try running two runs (bi-wire) of that same type of cable. When I upgraded from Monster to MIT I was running a single run of the MOnster but bought the MIT's in bi-wire. Being an upgrade just in puchasing the MIT, I think there was/is an improvement in both the quality of the wire AND way it is connected. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  22. Not knowing Denon very well I would say that the MOST you would have to pay for is the shipping to the repair facility, not the return trip. But in reality they (the store you bought the unit from) should reimburse you for the first leg of the transaction. I bought a preamp from Audio Classics that had to be shipped back for repair and I most certainly got a hand written check for the UPS shipping from me to them. I think this is definitely how a business should be operated. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  23. Speed- What theory are you talking about? ------------------ Tom's Money Pit This message has been edited by tblasing on 02-08-2002 at 09:30 AM
  24. You might want to check with Al himself. A while back he had a post that said he had an extra one for sale. Not really sure if it was a factory Klipsch unit or one of his own. ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
  25. Talon- (gee, I drive one too ) You might try http://www.studiotech.com and check out the Ultra Furniture line. I bought a U-48 rack from them when they were upgraging the line to add a couple more features. That meant the old line was selling for Half Off!! ------------------ Tom's Money Pit
