  5. O.K. all you Mac-heads here's your chance to realy shine. I'm looking for a magazine review of my newly returned McIntosh C33 from Audio Classics. It sounds beautiful. I just wish my girlfriend would stay quiet for five minutes so I can get the whole expierence. It was reviewed in High Fidelty in July of 1982. Any help? 8. I have heard that the 30's don't have as much bass as the, say, the 20's but speaker placement is gonna be the key thing here. If you don't have one already I would seriously think about getting an SPL meter (hand held units at Radio Shack for about $35). Using that will get the most bass out of them with out buying anything else heavy-duty. ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany McIntosh C33 (In the Hospital--being discharged on June 29th) Rotel RB-1080 Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Ortofon VMS-30 mkII Cartridge Stanton 999SS Cartridge Carver TL-3100 CD Yamaha K-1020 Cassette dbx 1231 EQ H.H. 9. Gee, let's dust off the ol' brain pan for a sec. It started off whith one that was given to me (does that count?). In 1978 my parents handed down to me my first "box"; a Hitachi all in one table-top unit with AM/FM, cassette and record player (when they're this cheap you call them 'record players' ). The grills wouldn't come off so I have no idea what was in them. I just remember it having a silver finish and a neon-type glowing blue tuner display. Then came my first "job". It happened to be at Swallen's in Cincinnati in the Audio Department. Shortly after starting there I picked up the a Technics SA-411 receiver with 45wpc., Technics R&B Series SB-7 speakers (main), SL-D350 (I think) turntable, a Technics RSM-236 cassette deck and a Numark 2310 EQ. Soon after that was the matching rear speakers, Technics R&B Series SB-3 speakers (bookshelf) and my first cd player, a Sony CDP-111 in silver. I was one of the first 50 people in this city to even have a cd player. That thing was a royal tank!! While the drawer was open you could use it as a handle and pick up the entire unit off the shelf completely and hold it like you would a suit case. I wore the laser out in it eventually, that must have been when you had to power down the cd player when you weren't using it because the laser was still turned on at idle. But that was all in 1983 ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany McIntosh C33 (In the Hospital--being discharged on June 29th) Rotel RB-1080 Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Ortofon VMS-30 mkII Cartridge Stanton 999SS Cartridge Carver TL-3100 CD Yamaha K-1020 Cassette dbx 1231 EQ H.H. 17. Carry on. Disco is not the answer. All I was suggesting was that finding a hobby to occupy the most difficult time was the vehicle I used on the way to recovery. I didn't mean to say that THIS was the only way to heal. Besides, this was long before my days of my current hobby.
  18. DWK- Sorry about the girlfriend. I had a similar 'bout with one in 1988. Really sucked at the time. I kept telling myself "The pain will never go away...you just don't cry about it as much later on".-blasism As a result of that former girl of mine, I took up collecting disco music as a hobby from the 70's (45's, cd, LP, whatever) and would play it in my car (fitting...a 1975 Mercury Montego MX 2-door with a 460cid) rather loud. I had a lot of fun in the 70's and this was a very long time before it came back in vogue and was easy to get hold of. I had the kind of friends that listened to that kind of music back then but it wasn't cool to be SEEN listening to it. Out on the Blvd. while playing this stuff, I would come up to a stoplight playing "Shame" from Evelyn "Champaigne" King at some un-Godly SPL. I either got one of two faces from other drivers: "What is THAT crap!" or "Hey! I remember that!!". It wasn't that kind of recognition I was looking for though, but it helped a little. Over all, the new hobby helped me through a lot of pain. It was also nice to use the car stereo music at the local school yards while practicing for the next skateboarding tournament. The "old" girl friend is now (at 31 years old) working at a McDonalds with an illagitimate child, gained about 60 lbs. and has a reputation for sleeping around with cops that are on duty. While I'm working in the legal field climbing my way to making $160 an hour, and currently have a girlfriend that teaches students with multiple handicaps at a local high-school. To this day marraige is something I distain. I'm not trying to put that philosiphy on everyone else, that is what I just found is right for me. Thankfully, my girlfriend understands. 20. Funny......I was in Jeffersonville (Washington Courthouse) ,Ohio (half-way between Cincinnati and Columbus on I-74) at a rather large outlet mall. Of course, Bose had a store there. Loved it when the 901's were in a very crampted room closely displayed with other speakers and room items that destroy the "surround effect" that these are toted for. 21. About a year or so ago I suggested an AM-15 system to a co-worker that has VERY limited space to put it in. (The average state prisoner has more room.) He gets a receiver DVD combo unit and has the set-up professionally installed. After hearing it I didn't have the heart to tell him it sucked. Oh well, he's happy, and he makes ten times what I do so as long as he keeps buying us lunch at the office once in a while..... Then I was reborn...and blessed with the sacrement of being Klipsched. About 4 months ago another co-worker wanted more of an architectural set up in multiple rooms. "Fine". I said. "How much did you want to spend?" She replies, "Oh.. about the same as Luke (First co-worker)." My reply "How would you like to blow Luke's out of the water?!! She smiles from ear to blond covered ear. "Let's start at about $5,000." After she picked her jaw up off the floor. She grins and thinks about it for a while and walks away. See, she wanted this to be in at least four zones. For $1,500 bucks! Yea, right!! And that's where that has stayed since then although I do needle her about every so often. I think she got the second notion from another co-worker that has an AM-xx system in her house and is thinking she (third co-worker) is keeping up with the Jones' by also having a Wave Radio. Now the second co-worker is looking at a 3rd generation Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder and paying cash for it! I gotta get this woman over to my place for a good listening session. And all of these people make multitudes more than the I do. One day in conversation I had some snapshots of a recent vacation I took. To use up the roll of film I took some insurance photos of my near completed stereo. The third co-worker finds those pictures and finally asks "How much was it?" I tell her, "When it's finished it'll top out about $11,000". Another jaw hit the floor. And I was just waitin' to some day put #3 in her place after she parades arounds the office with her nose in the air on a regular basis. A real Southern Belle type. The people I work with have the oddest priorities.... ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany McIntosh C33 (In the Hospital) Rotel RB-1080 Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Ortofon VMS-30 mkII Cartridge Stanton 999SS Cartridge Carver TL-3100 CD Yamaha K-1020 Cassette (maybe being mothballed) dbx 1231 EQ H.H. 22. This is gonna sound like the wierdest stuff to use but here goes. I went to the hardware store a few weeks ago looking for rather non-fun, practicle things and had a brain(cramp)-storm! In the plumbing isle was some poly-ethylene foam tubes for insulating hot-water pipes. It's split long-ways to cover the pipe. I flattened out the tube and took a drinking cup and traced out some circles with a Sharpie marker and cut them out with a pair of sissors. Flattened out put the circles under each foot of the cd-player, receiver, amp, pre-amp or what ever else you have. This may very well do the trick. Best thing is, for 89 cents you can do three units!! I haven't heard mine yet because my pre-amp is in the hospital (at Audio Classics) but it does sound promissing. ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany McIntosh C33 (In the Hospital) Rotel RB-1080 Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Ortofon VMS-30 Cartridge Stanton 999SS Cartridge Carver TL-3100 CD Yamaha K-1020 Cassette (maybe being mothballed) dbx 1231 EQ H.H. 23. HornsRus- If you want I can scan in and email you the pages from Carver's product catalog from about 1984. It explains your power supply amp pretty well. My recently purchased Rotel amp gets rather hot as well when it's idling. Althought Rotel couldn't tell me at what power output Class A ends and Class A/B begins. 24. I've never opened up one of those but I'm sure there's a way to do it. It's the back of the control knob that you want to access. There's probably a few phillips head screws on teh back of the pre-amp speaker. Once you can see it you can just spray a couple of short spray shots of TV Tuner Cleaner (Radio Shack for around $5) on the back of the knob. The goal is to let the fluid contact the contact points within the control. Be sure not to douse it! Too much could allow the fluid to ground out two points that aren't ment to touch each other. After the spraying is done just work the knob travel least to most about five to ten times. You may be able to turn it on after it's hooked back up (although I don't advise it unless your sure things are not crossed up) and try it before you put it back together; just saves time. Good luck! ------------------ Tom KLF-20 Mahogany McIntosh C33 (In the Hospital) Rotel RB-1080 Yamaha PF-800 Turntable/ Sure V15 Type V Cartridge Ortofon VMS-30 Cartridge Stanton 999SS Cartridge Carver TL-3100 CD Yamaha K-1020 Cassette (maybe being mothballed) dbx 1231 EQ H.H.
