  1. Ok, I'll say it, Bob has forgotten more about these networks than I know! I built the AL-3 network, and the A/AA. Actually Bob suggested I take the squawker up to -3db with the A55G and I was skeptical, but he was very right about that. (AL-3 is -4db on the squawker) and I consider this network a AA-sort-of, with ALK's tweeter filer thrown in, sort-of. I'm not done yet with the experimentation. I'm sure there is some tweeking to be done.
  2. After speaking with a certain knowledgeable person on this board, part of the reason for the AL's reputation as a tweeter killer is the way it was constructed. Originally I was going to retain my AL networks in their unmolested state and build new networks, playing with AA and some of ALK's ideas on improving parts of the classic networks, but I really saw no reason to keep it. I didn't think the sound of the lascalas was horrible with the AL in place, in fact, I sort of liked the recessed mids at first. As others have mentioned, with -6db shaved off the squawkers you can really crank it up and the speaker sounds fairly balanced. After installing the CT120 tweets and the A55G mids, and Crites' 3636 autoformers, I decided to experiment with the circuit. I reused the 2.5mH chokes and the terminal strips and played with different values of caps/coils/mid attenuation. The 2.5mH in parallel with the mid is really not a deal breaker either way. It was amazing that the less attenuation I had on the A55Gs (up to -3db) the better! The woofer circuit is, well, I think you could play with the values quite a bit on that. The tweeter filter was very surprising. I could hear a significant difference with inductor values and the cap on the other side of the inductor! I'm pretty close to ALK's values if memory serves and I'm still experimenting. I'm not a filter designer by any stretch of the keyboard. I'm just a guy playing with lascalas and caps and coils and an autoformer that allows -1db steps in attenuation. So this is not gospel, but I will say, with those Crites drivers installed and this network (oh and my EV pro-sub blended in at a reasonable volume) I'm hearing resolution I'd never heard before and the most solid imaging I've heard a pair of klipsch (of mine) make.
  3. I'm absolutely floored by mine. Can't recommend them strongly enough. I thought there was something inherently wrong with the K400 and maybe at a SPL point there is, but for listening in my living room, they totally redeemed that horn in my mind.
  4. Assuming you are interested in time aligning? Yes, you can do it with your drive rack. There are some guys on this site who are very knowledgable about this topic and generous with their time...cue Chris in 3, 2, 1.....
  5. Schu, if you are interested please pm with some details about your CWs. I am in Iowa, so, that would be a challenge. I wouldn't ship the khorns.
  6. Yes, I sold my belles 20 years ago and it wish I'd have kept them. I'm using a luxman sq38u. 25 w/p/c EL34 integrated.
  7. I purchased Crites 120s and sold the K77s that came stock in the khorns. I bought the Atlas PV5s and sold the k55ms. I bought some early 80s lascalas and migrated the crites drivers to the scalas and then I bought some A55gs. I still have the Atlas squawkers. Yes, I could be persuaded to replace those. I don't have anything to put in place of the k77s.
  8. Um, so, I would also consider chorus IIs, belles too. Still have a preference for cornwalls as I just have a fondness for them.
  9. Ha! You have no idea! I surrendered to the sweetest girl I ever met.
  10. I have had a couple people ask me about any blemishes my khorns may have. I had my daughter take some quality pics so you can see them. Oh and I included one picture of both of them in the living room hanging out, just because. They survived 3 houses/moves in great shape because I had the original boxes. When we moved to the farm I stored the boxes in the machine shed and the mice thought the bottom boxes made a great home...d'oh. As I said the top boxes are still functional.
  11. I bought these oak khorns new in 1998, I even drove to hope to get them (long story). I am offering them for sale here at $2200. I have the original boxes for the tops, but not the bottoms boxes. I will reinstall K77s and k55ms. I have modified type A networks in place now. I still have the AK3 boards but just the boards with the name plates, no coils/caps on them. I will entertain partial trades for Cornwall 1 or 2s, but they would have to be in excellent condition. Not trying to be difficult, but if they are not in excellent condition, I wouldn't be interested. (I have enough projects currently). I am in Iowa. 5 hours from Minneapolis, 4 hours from Omaha, 4 hours from Chicago, 6 from Kansas city. I can't ship them. Please PM if you are interested.
  12. That is very cool. I would love to send him my lascalas.
  13. Yep. Oddly enough I have Khorns, lascalas and heresys in my house currently and I can switch back and forth between them. The lascalas do sound different than heresys. The Khorns and the lascalas sound different from each other too. But that is primarily because of the geometry of the khorn/room and the deeper bass response of the khorn. The lascalas and khorns are fully horn loaded and the squawker covers a lot more sonic territory on the big klipsch. Go hear them, you'll see what I mean.
  14. Actually had to use para eq to not send anything lower than 35Hz to the sub. I'm a two channel guy and there's really no instrument I listen to that goes deeper than that #rockjazzbluesnerd So far so good here.
  15. Ok EV ETX15SP is pretty dang cool. I have it integrated to where an acoustic bass sounds very realistic (I really had to back off the level). Very easy to control the dsp, very articulate, so far I'm liking this. Will post if things change.
  16. Yep, I am going to try these EVs and see what they sound like. I am not against passive horn subs (TH112 Danleys etc), like I said I've used them before and I like the sound of the sub horns I've used. I even did a show once at which I used 4 of the large BFM titans in a 100 person club. That was serious bass. I even considered an EAW FR250Z as DJK mentioned many years ago that push pulls have less distortion than horns. I occasionally wish I lived closer to civilization so I could try more gear. Wait, no I don't....
  17. For those keeping score at home, the JBLSRX818SP was not a good match. In the literature is mentioned that it has built in delay in the DSP. It does not. It can delay the unit, relative to another unit in a rig (they have IP addresses) but no delay within the box to match the lascala's horn length. It still sounded pretty groovy but, alas, it did not integrate really well. At least, I should say, I was unable to make it sound cohesive. I'm going to try one more prosound sub with a reputation for finesse...the EV ETX15SP. We shall see. I pay for return shipping so you don't have to!
  18. Thanks for the link. Looks interesting, I can actually get the JBL for the same money. Yes, I've used horn subs in pro sound (small local rock bands) and have had good luck with them in groups in bigger venues or outdoors. The Yorkville is a quasi horn loaded sub that can do ok standalone indoors, but likes to hang out with others outdoors. I am not opposed to horn subs at all. Something like the danley TH112 looks interesting too.
  19. I have a Yorkville LS808 that I can eq to be fairly flat to low 40s and it actually sounds pretty good with a the lascalas. But it's huge and carpeted, requires a driverack/poweramp and yeah, zero WAF....anyway I was considering blowing in a JBLSRX818SP because, it doesn't have to play that loud (capable of 135db) so I'd never drive it passed it's xmax and I can even monkey with patterns and all manner of eq/delay/etc. I don't do home theater so a sub that goes into the 30s is overkill for me. Anyone else tried one of these subs for home use? http://www.jblpro.com/www/products/portable-market/srx800-series/srx818sp#.WD41UtYUwqY
  20. Played them in the lascalas and in the khorns and it's all good. Very good. Very very very good. I will play more tomorrow. Khorns are running A crossovers and the scalas are AA BTW
  21. I'll try them in my khorns too. I'm running AAs in both my scalas and khorns at this point. I'll take the coil off the + leg of the squawker (4500 mod) and stick the proper value tweet caps in. Any driver that can manage 40% less distortion, smoother response and no change to existing crossovers sounds like a winner to me. Like I said, I'll listen a bunch when they show up
  22. Ooooh, mine were supposed to be here today. Darn it. They should be here tomorrow. Can't wait to hear what they sound like in my lascalas.
  23. Dean, you're the man!!!!! Thank you sir. Have a great thanksgiving.
