  1. I once saw a DIY cable fryer... anyone remember where that was?
  2. JVS1670 If you want to build on your own with help look to www.pmillett.com/ or diytube.... all build quality choices would be up to you.
  3. Tube fanatic, NOS valves and my self have all made great amps for forum members and would prob do it again for anyone wanting. The wright amp looks nice on the outside but not knowing the the circuit more always worries us on the forum. To echo previous posts there's a big difference in the characteristic sound of a set up versus a solid-state amp; with each having their own following.
  4. I too try not to believe in break in. But have been told many times by transformer winders that the transformers need to be exposed to music (varried freq) to fully break in... I can give you their explination... but I want to put the words BS after it... I do think for whatever reason, things change... exposing transformers to music for ext periods (or acumulation of long hours) stabalizies their behavoir... Im sure this is true of caps too. Im less sure about resistors, esp 1%s.
  5. It’s a amp I build. Specifically, it’s a push-pull tube power amp, able to use 6L6GCs through KT120s. Output power varies from 25watts with 6L6s through 70watts with KT120s. I demo’d the amp with 6CA7s at 35watts and their low end control and HR extension was remarkable. Its available through ampsandsound.com thought the page for it is not up. If you PM me I can send pics, specs and details. I am in process of writing its web page. When I did a shootout against my heavily modified Dynaco MKIIIs, the difference in sound quality was remarkable.
  6. K401 horns and Selenuim D250x drivers $80 plus shiping or pickup in LA area. WIll include custom ALK Cornscalawal crossovers, 600hz 4000hz allowing appropriate use of the Selenuim D250x. The D250X crosses as low as 400hz, but The K33 will go to 600 easily so better to cross there. The 4000hz is to no reach the upper limit of the D250x. Though it says it will do 9000hz... it get ugly... least as Dave Harris and ALK told me... so this was the best solution. In trueth, I couldnt hear the transition. ... A good crossover goes a long way. Ill sell all of the above for $360 plus shipping.
  7. The additional functions of the oppo seem a better all around choice... Do they use compairible DAC chips? Is DSD going to take over the world or will it stay PCM unless you own SCADs? For AIFFs compairible units for SQ?
  8. Anyone within draving distance to 92656 is happy to come here. I have 2 cornscalas and a super La Scala are pretty fun. Ill take a new pic tonight with the grills on the bins. All in all I cant tell that its a K55... a good horn and crossover go a looooong way!
  9. I primarily have a 2 sources. LPs (MA2275 phono stage into SUT to a VPI Classic I and Grado sonata moving iron) and Apple Mac Mini to DAC. The Mac in a i5 mini with 16gigs with SS drive for the operating system and Fire wire to external drive array. My current library is 99% AIFFS ripped from CDs via iTunes and played through Ammara hifi. So... Is this a worthwhile upgrade. I will never spend more than $1500 on a DAC... as I believe that every 2-4 years a mid-entry level DAC will become a giant killer compared to the top shelf from several years prior. Does the Oppo HA-1 represent a significant improvement of my XDA-2? The extra features are nice... the DSD support, Bluetooth and AptX. Has anyone heard one in the wild? If I had not owned a intergraded form long ago the HA-1 one with its 1 analog input and multiple digital inputs would be the perfect pre. Looking at its build Id swear it was OEM’d from Emotiva... Looking at Emotiva stealth DAC there are a lot of similarities, the power regulator, form factor, PCB design and general layout... Am I wrong? All responses welcome :-)
  10. Really great feedback. I still prefer the AIFFS to FLAC... no compression is ok with me. WAV are same thing... AIFFs just allow for meta data. Ive ripped all my 800+ CDs to it. I have a much much larger low res version but more often turn to my main library to maintain the SQ.
  11. Not to start a WAR... but AIFFs are BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FLAC uses an algorithm to pull the used bit out and place them back. An algorithm is a computer modeled guess... it is not bit for bit accurate. Additionally, AIFFs do not need to be decoded (Processed ) in the same manner. OK... I’m really not trying to piss anyone off.. but from my exp. AIFFs have proven a higher quality source. I have yet to wade into DSD.
  12. Thanks... this is my 55watt attack on the big mono blocks of the world.
  13. I had built it with 6CA7 for outputs, but knew full well that 6550s would be used. I just have a soft spot for the 6CA7. The other tubes are 12AX7 and 6SN7. It was a bit shocking just home much better it sounded over my dynacos... As a result, I kept the Dynaco's and Pete went home with his new amps and a speaker selector I built.
  14. These pics come courtesy of Pete who is the happy owner. I had set these up against my heavily modified MKIIIs and the results we pretty remarkable. The Casablanca’s as I call them were a clear winner, more articulate bass and HF extension to boot. In my hast I didn’t get to snap pics for my site. Pete was kind enough to do so for me… Shot in raw and then edited… seems much better results than Ive pulled off before.
  15. I like that Eminence is made in US... brings all parts to US made... kinda nice.
  16. I started out wanting to build a PA rig to make use of spare parts… frankin-speaker J. It started with Dayton Pro 15" woofer, K401/Selenium D250, Eminence APT150 and ALK cornscalawal 600hz/4000hz to tie it all together. Like most on here, I was not content with the status quoi and started upgrading. The finished product is My split bins, Eminence Kappa pro 15C, Fastlane audio's Tratrix horn, with a pair of traded K55s, Fastlane's Eliptrac tweeter lens and the Eminence ASD1001B. I’ve had to choke back the tweeter a ton due to its efficiency but the current results are pretty impressive. Additionally, I brought Dave some scrap Walnut and he went to town and built some radical lenses. These things are works of art!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
