  1. The belles (la scalas in a tuxedo) have an enormous, big speaker sound and impact. The immediacy is powered by the folded horn woofer. HOWEVER, they cut off so high they need a sub. If you have the space, the belles will outperform the KLF-30 everywhere from 80hz and up. Not to mention the huge variety of premium upgrades that can be done on a Belle. When it comes to horns, there is no replacement for displacement...and wide throat horns.
  2. I wasn't a slipknot fan early on. In fact, not until the latest two albums. I discovered them via watching videos of joey Jordinson blazing away on the drums. I think that the latest album is far and away thier best stuff. Again, before the last two...not much appeal here either.
  3. Ebay needs to be alerted of this, because it's fraud. The item promised as stated "In pefect cosmetic and functioning condition". If the box was dropped so hard on one end as to damage a woofer, the container would show damage. As you said: not the case. Notify ebay of this immediately through the resolution center...do not hesitate. Normally, paypal payment is withheld for a few days until the seller leaves feedback. That is regardless of how many stars.
  4. And you have painted yourself as a well-practiced troll amassing the mother lode of insignificant contributions. Keep up the good work! Every forum needs deadweight like you to keep going and make everyone else look good. We so needed your insightful analysis and comprehensive summary of what you think of me personally instead of anything of actual value. Not. Back under the bridge with you, o arbitrator of quality participation and postcount comptroller! Something to wrap your troll mind around: every single edit counts as a post. My actual post count is not that high. If you don't like it...get a life.
  5. Down lapdog!!! Heel! Bad dog! Kristian needs to install a shock collar on you. Problem is, you don't think. Thinking is not something you are well suited for. However, immature flaming is. You also obviously don't read the forum and would rather be an insuffereble jerk by trolling me personally. The names Dean G, Bob Crites and Al Klappengerger ring a bell? You don't suppose that they have posted a multitude of things on this very topic? No, obviously you have no electronics background and would not understand anyway. So please, break out the no more tears shampoo and some hankies and grow up.
  6. Paul Gray, the bassist from the band Slipknot, was found dead in a hotel in Iowa this morning ... this according to local police. According to the Urbandale Police Dept, an employee at the hotel found Gray's body in his room early this morning. Cops say they found no evidence of foul play at the scene, but there will be an investigation into Gray's death. Gray was 38 years old.
  7. Um.. I like to use a mac instead of a mac?
  8. Nikola Tesla made a green amp in the 19th century. The problem was, the hand crank was noisy.
  9. I'd visit 1969 for the cheaper speakers, a Led Zep and Beatles show, muscle car...con some babe into "free love" and then leave. "The good old days weren't always good, and tomorrow ain't as bad as it seems." Billy Joel
  10. The tubes have the nice, even order harmonics , air and a touch of warmth that few ss designs deliver. There is a layering effect that tubes have and a dynamic contrast that some ss designs fail. I mean that in terms of articulation. There is more of a contrast and separation between notes and voices. It's hard not to bask in the glow of tubes and enjoy the musicality.
  11. Note: As good as the KG4's (and sb2's) sound now, neither are a match for the clarity and presence of a Heresy or Forte. Larger apature horns and separate horns for mid range and tweeter drivers are the only way to fly as far as I am concerned. If I had the cash and space, modded la scalas with the large horns and a sub would be the way to go. There is no replacement for displacement. I say this in case anyone is on the fence about heresy's vs KG4. The heresy's are worth the extra money. I like the forte as a stand-alone, where I want a sub with the heresy and la scala and belle. So save your pennies...and go all horn if possible.
  12. The better parts work, but indeed---I dig your external crossover option, and eliminating all the binding posts/clips/extra attachment hardware. I am considering your plan for my upcoming HII upgrade. Space, and sheilding between parts! Exotic all-metal caps that take mega-hours to burn in are not likely to be installed in most speakers. They run $200-$300 or more, each. Even with that, there is no guaruntee said caps will improve the sound. Seems that the laventure site does not care for solen or some auricaps very much. There is a blend of objective and subjective there as well.
  13. Note to all: My favorite Klipsch speakers always have, and always will be those models that feature a separate tweeter and midrange horn. In my experiance, just that feature alone give the horn a presence, clarity and "bigness" that small two ways can't match. The KG4's horn aperture is bigger than the sb-2 and that alone casts a bigger soundfield. As much as I like my hotrodded KG4's, hotrodded heresy's do everything better except bass below 60hz. HII's are my next project.
  14. SAMPLE parts list to restore Forte I's and upgrade: (from partsexpress) Two 100uf Non polarized electrolytics (total about $3.00) Two 10uf NP " piggy backed to make 110uf (Total about $1.15) Two metallized poly 1.5uf caps (about $2.50) Four 2uf metallized poly caps (about $5.00) You really don't need to replace the transformers or coils if you don't want to. And while you are in there: Bob Crites titanium tweeter diaphragms (MUCH better than stock poly!) $55 + $6 S&H. So basically, you will get a boatload more performance for the grand sum of $75.
  15. 1. Good plan! 2. I just lost out on a mega deal: 2 pairs of Heresy' II s sold on CL in Seattle. A- condition. $400/pr or all four for $750. I am just now weeping into my sumatran blend. 3. Exactly..I have been there, seen that. When a cap dielectric dries out, the conductors touch and will blow up violently. It's even worse in a power amp. My Forte II caps were degraded and the sound was duller over time.
  16. If the cap went bad (like dried electrolyte) the performance could be degraded. Stock electrolytic caps dry out between 5-20 years. Swap speaker positions, does the problem follow? Yes- speaker problem. No: amp or electronics problem. And the drivers can be ohm'd out to see if it meets spec. Forte tweeter diaphragms are $52 a pair for titanium. Replacement caps start at a few cents for stock quality, $2.68 each for metallized poly Dayton (Bennic) and up from there. "Peak performance" can be had for about $120-$200. Just getting fresh caps (need be nothing exotic) makes a huge difference. Word of warning: if it is determined to be the speaker, (IE the speaker has degraded caps that are the original factory caps) then change them immediately. When an electrolytic cap dries, it degrades. But it's not far from degrade, to shorting out and catastrophic failure. Don't let it go that long!
  17. I think Ronnie's last Tv appearance was just after his initial treatment. He appeard on VH1 classics "Revolver Golden God awards" and it was one of the only times he got an award. Eddie Trunk of "That metal show" hosted a half hour tribute to Dio last night. Dio was far more than just a metal God. He was a well liked, well thought of person with a humanitarian side as well. 18. I was hoping you'd chime in, I am familiar with your work over the years. And I am glad there is a reference. 10-20 hours for that type of cap I can buy, mainly because of material heat and conductivity. But then again, you provide reason, and reference not just "Use the force...search your feelings...you know it's true" type answers. The proper placement and isolation of the coil and construction is a good call! FWIW: I was searching the net for references over coffee, and I contacted two audio engineer buddies for some input. I won't repeat what they said, except the salient point: "Audiophilia is like a religion, so it's a waste of time trying to convert anyone or argue with the facts. " With that...to each his own belief.
  19. I'd go back to 1969 to buy 2 pairs of klipschorns at 1969 prices so I could have them today in new condition.
  20. Yes, there would be a measurment as it would reflect in the output of the speaker. There are audio engineers that could measure it, as in frequencies present/in different dispersion. Just move the microphone and measure a bit more peripherally than in the center, or use more than 2 mics. Change in output manifests itself physically...frequency, pressure or both. This is based on changes in resistance, capacitance and other parameters. Perhaps measuring with a new form of fluid dynamics---measuring the fluid (air) as it's pushed out of the apertures. There is nothing mystic or magic, but audiophelia is indeed a religion all it's own that true belivers wish to cloak in mysticism. Note that I did not say some changes didn't take place... but at the same time, 3 responses that said changes cannot be measured/have not been measured/don't need to be measured. Magazines won't publish certain measurements for fear of losing ad revenue. This is especially true for wire or component burn in. Over charging speaker cable and IC companies would take it in the shorts. But as was stated, it would be an endless argument akin to a thoeology debate. Wire burns in! No, it doesn't ears do! etc etc... "Hey! I just noticed that these new phosphorescent, cryo treated speaker feet are so good, it's like hearing a window through space and time. I can hear clouds brushing up against each other! " Like a religion, there are those that believe the force is a mystical energy that flows through everything. It was actually revealed that it is a measureable quantity of midicholrians in the bloodstream. One day, some credible source will tackle this topic and the audio sith lords will be very upset when it happens. It is interesting to note that double blind ABX testing that has been done, including a $10,000 prize offered--after 2,000+ tests...no one has won. No golden ears could hear the difference. When the facts and science appear....so do the excuses. "It's rigged!" "It's not MY system!" " I need to see what I am listening to!" and so on. The force, all over again. I do not believe in wire or electronic component burn in past a few seconds. But there is no more need to preach to the choir, or beat the pulpit because neither side would be converted.
  21. This section is rapidly becoming a Vinyl forum!
  22. I try to use firefox or chrome instead of using safari instead of safari... [] I noticed the ipad pretty much instantly obsoleted the macbook air....
  23. So, no measurements or proof exists, it's all opinion and "because I said so." That was the response I expected anyway. Much like the response for cryo treated cables, cable elevators, shun-mook discs and listening with the curtains drawn to reduce the photon pressure on the drivers. If it's audible, it's measurable. Any actual change in sound is measurable. I know (and believe in) what can be measured. YMMV.
  24. I'd be happy to run a duplicate, unbiased and controlled experiment to recreate this. Do you have the parameters of the carefully controlled tests you ran to exclude personal bias and other subjective opinions? Could you cite the credible, unbiased source (like an audio engineer in a test facility) for exact reasons for cap burn in of hundreds of hours? I'd like to see the before and after measurements of the caps and wires as well. Thanks in advance.
