  1. Hey! I have an old set of Bose speakers, and my cat loved to sleep on top of them. She has never messed with any other stereo equip. But the cover on the top firing part of those 601s were just too much for her to resist. Nice Kitty! [H] Bottom of my list, but top of her's.
  2. [:^)]Due to my lack of knowledge, it appears that I have confused some. I'll try to break it down.#1 I have lap top that has wireless conection to something that plugs into telephone land line. #2 I bought external hard drive that was for PC, brief instructions in box state it will work with lap tops. #3 I would like to store and retreive music at will to play, and make copys for using in the car, one each. Thus preserving the originals. #4 I think I would have to use the lap top to access the external hard drive for playing music. #5 The stereo's I have range from Mac mc30s, Fisher 400, to 70s Marantz's and Sansui's. All vintage as far as the receivers and amps go. Have some other equip, but from same era. #6 Have many CD players, and 1 Dual turntable. #7 May want to convert some records to digital using turntable #8 Don't want to degrade signal in transfer of music. #9 Price is important as SHMBO is starting to look at equip with Funny look in her eye, and asking hard to answer questions like "WHY" #10 I just gave up on understanding some things. We were talking about the speakers I put upstairs by the TV and how they did not look as good as the ones I replaced. Her reply, "I don't care what they look like, they sound really good!" [:^)]
  3. Have obtained new 2TB Hardrive for storing CD'S and possible family pictures. What I know about this is very little. I presume I just copy the CD and transfer to HD. Set up files for music and pictures. No special program needed for optimual performance? Should be able to retrieve from hardrive and interface to any of the receivers as desired. Pull up album to make copys on the lap top for the car. I would also presume that to transfer from records to hard drive would be best to have good sound card or something. However as I use lap top, maybe this would be difficult?
  4. Mother's day. Wifes Birthday. Anniversary, all with in about the same week. I just Panic, run out and get all required cards, ect, label which is for what, and place out for wife. Not perfect, but prevents waterboarding. [:-*]
  5. I have receivers set by my chair. Just lean forward and adjust the volume, or whatever needs adjustment. Downstairs I have CD player with remote volume adjustment. Set preamp, then use remote to adjust CD output. Not perfect, but works for me.
  6. Thanks all for your caring comments. Pam and I cried together when she 1st found out over 7 years ago. She has been able to see both her sons graduate from High school since then. Has married a very caring man who knew of her diagnoses. I couldn't ask for a better Brother in law, or her caring inlaws. She has worked as an OR nurse until unable to work anymore. She took me to South America on one of her many trips to assist in surgery on babies with Cleft lip and Palattes. It seems I can see the changes in just a couple weeks now. Hey, I'm sorry, just feeling down right now. Not the right forum for this. Thanks again John
  7. My sister Pam has exceeded the usual life expendency for this devastating disease. Not sure how long she will make it, but she has fought it every step of the way. The news I read is that they have found the cause, but no cure in time to help Pam. Eugene Walk - 09/18/11 Pam's PALS Thanks for supporting Pam's Pals! Pam Hansen has been an inspiration to all of us. She has shown incredible strength and true grace in her battle with ALS. Why We Need Your Help Often referred to as Lou Gehrig's Disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neuromuscular disease that slowly robs the body of its ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. The life expectancy of an ALS patient averages 2 to 5 years from the time of diagnosis. Every 90 minutes a person in this country is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes another person will lose their battle against this disease. ALS occurs throughout the world with no racial, ethnic, or socioeconomic boundaries. This crippling disease can strike anyone. Presently there is no known cause of the disease yet it still costs loved ones an average of $200,000 a year to provide the care ALS patients need. 8. Stripping any wire, any gauge, any length. fasten end of wire to long bench, or wooden board. Take old fashion hand plane and set depth of cut to less then thickness of insulation. plane insulation in one cut to end of board. Re adjust wire and repeat. When the full length of wire has been trimmed on one side, pull insulation off. of course you must have old fashion plain, and it helps if it is sharp. [^o)] If you can think outside the box, you can be outside the box. Had a cat that taught me that. Named him Houdini!
  9. No intent to use sheetrock. It's just that the wall of the house is sheetrock. I like the Ideal of extreme, Building codes are bare minimum
  10. I've read several posts, and seen some nice pictures posted, but have a few questions. 1. Would 3/4 plywood laminated to MDF, plywood, or something else give better sound then 3/4 or thicker glued and screwed to 2 x 4 framing with insulation be better for sound. I am not too worried about wt as if it is built to break down for moving, a couple hundred pounds a side will not be unreasonable. (400lbs per false corner +/-). Have strong young man who has much experince moving furniture willing to help with the heavy moving. 2. I have carpet over cement slab in day light basement. Should I put a plywood base down, or let these rest on the carpet. I don't think I can get away with carpet spikes. Have to sleep sometime, and SHMBO is part Apache. No racial insult intended, married for over 30 years. I could glue carpet sliders under plywood base for moving speakers while in false corners as they work quite well for heavy moving on the carpet. 3. I have considered building butcher block type walls, but getting straight, non cupped, or warped 2 x4 does not look easy to find. Besides, cost would add up in a hurry. 4. I'm thinking that I should have both speaker false walls the same, and get away from the sheetrock that the walls are made up of. 5. I also think that a shelf connecting the false walls at 5 or 6 feet would add to the stability and give place for treasured pictures of family. No Plants! I have basic ideal of what I want it to look like, just want to go for best sound. Please let the critics and advisers begin. Thanks in advance.
  11. Seems I seen a 2230 in Eugene OR. Probably tooo far, and in used stereo shop. Between 1 & 200 somewhere. Don't remember the exact price but I can call. If I ask they usually will hold equip for me. Depending on how bad you want one, if its still there I could dicker, and ship at your expense. I would include receipt for your benefit. Going to Eugene next wk if your interested. As far away as you are, return might be difficult, not impossible, but shipping costs.
  12. I FIX. Turn off de picture, enjoy the sound. Read book and listen to music, or turn off all de lights and enjoy music. TV evil ! No watch evil TV
  13. Yep! I took an SX950 to a guy that I paid $40-$60 for him to tell me he might be able to fix it for $300. Then tried to sell me a unit I did not want. I now deal with England Audio in Eugene OR. Very pleasant gentleman, knowledgeable, gives great advice for free, He has picked up items that he thought I might be interested in (on his dime) just in case I wanted to buy them. Seems like every time I pick something up, I bring more in for him to work on. As I have been a consistant customer, he has told me that if I am short on funds at some point, I can make it up to him later. Not too many people like that! One hot day he offered to let me pull my car into his air conditioned shop and catch a nap before an up coming appointment! He now has the SX950 and a Marantz. He said the SX950 should not be a problem. The Marantz's problem is intermittant, thus asked if it was OK to send home with his tech. I never push this Gentleman to hurry, and he knows I prefer Quality to quick turn around. I have more equip that I will have him go thru since SHMBO has said a few times that I have enough stereos. I think I need another since 13 is an unlucky number, and I don't count the big box strore crap that I've accumalated for free. When you find a good Tech, Keep him in Business.
  14. Like I said, I feel like I'm in the stone age with this tech stuff. Can't even post pictures by following the directions. Maybe if I take Pic with cell phone they will post. Anyhow I bought new 2 TB external hard drive for music and maybe pictures. Now I just have to learn to use it. The old stuff, plug reciever into speakers I understand. Have learned to plug computer into TV for movies for one of the older Gentlemen that live with us. I see you're on west coast also. No wonder you're up this time of morning.
  15. Good advice! I'll take with THANKS. Unfortunally the speaker issue seem to be a problem with the Marantz Quad. Guess It's time to bring the 9090 and 9090DB up for a while. Or maybe just the Fisher??? [^o)]
  16. Well I picked up the Dual truntable the other day. Then hit the Goodwill store. Picked thru 2/3rd of their stock. Paid 10 and got change. 99 cents a record, any record. Got home and tried it out. OMG I like it. Running it into old Marantz quad reciever, Unfortunately one of the rear speakers took a dump. Now I just need to go to the closet of speakers and get another pair. Long walk downstairs. Won't fit on the bookshelf either. [8]
  17. [^o)] Have a small Issue, I have paradigm phantom v2 speakers that I am giving as a gift, and cannot find felt bottomed feet for them. I took one of the carpet spikes to hardware store that usually has everything but no luck. They told me that the carpet spikes are #6 metric, and they have no 'metric' felt bottomed feet. If worst comes and I can't fine what I need I will be forced to glue felt to bottom of speakers to prevent the brass inserts from scratching the Hardwood floor. Cousin has sign to remove shoes at front door. I'm setting her up with Marantz 2285B, CD player, and the Paradigm speakers. AS usual, I have a side question. Does anyone know how much these speakers will handle before they blow? I'd like to give advice as to how far to turn them up when she has a house sitter or guest there. Thanks, John
  18. iPhone! I'm still in the stone age here. Does this require a cell phone signal? Don't get one of those at home. If it does, does it count against the minutes used on my plan? Have small amout of minutes as when talking on cell it will be short conversation. iTunes? Have to admit my ignorance here. Have several "Y" wires though and I have considered a seperate hard drive for music only. Some of the external hard drives look awful big (small size, store lots of info). Would these be compatible with a lap top? Would I need another computer if I wanted to look at the forum while listening to music? I do have my hooks in a Dual turntable. So much to learn, so little time. I buy speaker wire by the roll. Can never have enough. Thanks! John
  19. Also have Fisher 400. Goal is to throw it into the mix and A/B with Marantz and Sansui SS, also mc 30's. Through K Horns. Trying real hard not to buy more receivers or amps, but to have all gone through and up to spec or better. I'm slow, but I'll get there.
  20. Thanks to both you and Boxx, I called and Linda at the little stereo store has put my name on the Dual. Looks like I'll be shopping for Vinyl.[] By the way, a Sameless plug for Thompsons Electronics in Eugene OR. They have treated me great over the years.
  21. I looked at a Sansui Direct drive with adjustment to set speed with strobe. Non Quartze lock, 45 & 33 rpm. He's asking $300. Its on consignment. Also a Dual CS5000 made in Germany? which has 33, 45, & 78, belt drive I believe. They are asking $250. Came down from $300. Exellent return policy for me from this business. Comments anyone? Have not had turntable since I was a kid. Just a phone call and either or can be mine.
  22. Looks like a Candidate for my "Martha Stewart Collection" of room treatment, as someone called it. It wouldn't take any more room.
  23. [^o)] SWMBO was after me about having too many speakers stored in a closet and wanted to know when I was going to get rid of some. I tried to tell her I was giving a pair away later this summer, but it didn't look good as I have some that won't fit in the closet that I'm also not using at present. I did not bring up the ones I have at my son's house in his closet, or that he is using in the living room. Later I asked what she would think of another pair of K Horns if I could put them in a water resistant cabinet out on the patio. I said we could crank them up where the gentleman on the hill above us (2-300 yards) might be able to listen to them. Well they are good people, and SWMBO said she thought that might be a good Idea. Dennis has said we needed something they could listen to on the hill. I suspect he wants revenge for the kids living between us that have the drums and motorcycles. Of course I would have to move them into waterproof, dry climate area for the winter. So I have 2 questions # 1. Would 2 K Horns in inclosures played at 100w reach 2-300 yards? # 2. Does anyone who is male understand women? Do women understand women? OK that was 3 questions, but I thought it only wise to seek all advise.
