  1. For us budget minded folks, how long is too long for unbalanced? Also, are there implications to very short speaker wire runs? I am looking seriously at the amp located at the speaker option.
  2. Ok, so which is better then? Long interconnects or long speaker wire?
  3. Everyone is entitled to their own ridiculous opinion. Even if it isn't that far fetched.
  4. Let me jump in here and give testimony. I also have the 2x4 in a box. It is quiet and so easy to use. Imagine sitting in your listening position and just tweaking to your ear using material you know. No pops or clicks when changes are processed, just an occasional moment of silence. Best money I have ever spent on audio gear, bar none. Purchase was painless and fast. Brad
  5. I have them crossed at 650hz using BW 6db/oct slops. Mid range sound intergration(if there is such a thing) is not as good as it should be, IMO. I would also like to tackle the problems down below 40hz to the extent that's possible. I have REW and a mic that came with my DBX driverack (not currently in use). There are calibration files available for the mic, but I understand the adjustments are generic and maybe not specific to the my mic. I agree that the HF using Daves horn and the Faital are indeed flat and wonderful. I tried them alone at low volume and was amazed at the sound.
  6. I am not an audio engineer and did not stay at a Holiday Inn Express. I need a how to for taking measurements using REW and taking those results and using them to EQ using the miniDSP. Thanks ahead.
  7. Did you get your polarity issue solved? I rewired my ForteIIs after replacing the diaphrams and the crossovers. It took several tries to sort things out, but I do not remember just what I learned except to pay attention. The wiring attach points are clearly labeled, I just got sloppy.
  8. Ah, but of course. No really, I mounted the casters so I could move them easier. But discovered that I liked the bin on the floor, so I turn them upside down. I can do that, can't I? [:^)]
  9. I am using the ElipTrac-400 with Faital HF-200 drivers. I am using an active crossover with a miniDSP. The results have been very pleasing. I like the two way approach.
  10. Not an affliction, a blessing. Sharing with our Fathers is always good times and great memories. Thanks for sharing with us.
  11. Sorry about the format of the post. Don't quite understand what the problem is, but ...
  12. I spoke with Dave Harris several months ago and decided to try his Eliptrac horns. Coupled with the Faital HF200 driver the result is very satisfying. I am using the MiniDSP and with some trial and error strictly by ear I now am hearing nuances in music I thought I knew very well. Just in case I was fooling myself I brought a good friend with thirty years experience in the high end audio business to listen and maybe suggest a teak or two that may improve the setup. He has always been highly critical of horns, but he loves the Eliptrac/Faital combo and voluntered that it was the first horn high end setup that he could listen to for extended periods. He was also impressed by the miniDSP's flexibility to change crossover settings, time delay and EQ on they fly while listening. When he realized what I spent to get this kind of result he just shook his head and commented that a lot of people that know music (here in Nashville) spend ten times as much and do not get as good an outcome. Thanks to Dave and Bob Crites for the help along the way. I just hope I resist the irresistible urge to make changes to the other parts of the system for a while. The system: Audio Research SP6 miniDSP Adcom 535 on the high end Eliptrac/Faital horns Phase Linear 400 on the Jubilee clone/Crites bass horns I do not own the PL amp, but have a chance to buy it for 350 dollars. I know the reputation is that they blow up and as a result a good many have been modded or otherwise are ruined. This one is a one owner that was sold by my above mentioned friend. Its been opened recently and its operating to specs. I have used it for a month or so with no issues.
  13. Thanks for the info. The right delay settings seem to make a difference. Brad
  14. What is the length of the sound path for Jubilee bass bins? Thanks ahead Brad
  15. For what its worth, I used Crites replacement tweeter domes and splurged on his replacement crossovers for my Forte ll and have been very happy. While the tweeters worked before, they are now cleaner sounding. I am constantly amazed at the sound of these speakers. As I have upgraded turntable, pre-amp and amplifier they just sound even better. Brad
  16. I heard someone talk about "vertical bi-amping" the other day and it sounded interesting so I gave it a try. So far so good as I have two Adcom 535 amps with one being the "L" model with the pads. But because I can no longer turn the gain down on the 535L that I used to use on the tweeter horn I have audible noise. Not being an audio engineer, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I am using a DBX driverack PA plus for an active crossover and the tweeter horns are JBL 2435 compression drivers.
  17. Did ya'll see this? http://itishifi.blogspot.com/2012/01/klipsch-console.html Don't ya just love retro? Brad
  18. I went through my country music CDs and most have been ruined by the mastering. If there was a vinyl version released then the CD is much better most of the time.
  19. Any quick opinions on this vintage amp? Supposibly its recently refurbished.
  20. I got onto Adcom 535 SS amps that date back a decade or I think. You can buy them on EBAY for around a hundred bucks and they have been a very cost effective way to drive good speakers. The review that got me onto these is here. http://www.stereophile.com/solidpoweramps/adcom_gfa-535_power_amplifier/index.html The 535L version has gain pads for each channel. I use two of these in a bi-amp configuration. For a set of Heresys I use a HH Scott 222c. Its a great heater and sounds good to boot.
  21. Just bought a model 21 decoder and played a very clean copy of Blood Sweat and Tears that I bought by accident. I thought it sounded terrific. With several others available nearby I am tempted to collect as many as possible. I am buying a classical DBX record next and need a jazz record recommendation to flesh out the possibilities. If anyone has titles they know of, please tell. Thanks
  22. Does anyone know where I can find a list of the records that were released using the dbx ecoding. Thanks Brad
  23. Room is 24 feet deep and 13 feet wide. Speakers are in the long end at the back wall. The ceiling is slanted for the first 4 feet. I have two listening positions that I am trying to decide on. One is at my desk 16 feet from the speaker wall and the other is a leather chair at 12 feet. I prefer the desk so I don't fall asleep.[|-)] The floors are oak, but I have a small area rug in front of the speakers. The following posts are the pictures.
  24. Well I moved them in from the corners and have been very happy. While the horns are not K402s the sound still is very dynamic and pleasing at low and high volumes. I believe I need bass traps. Where is the best place to get those?
